From John To Justin
Join me as I look at the politics of Canada, from the time of Sir John A. Macdonald to Justin Trudeau. I look at every prime minister, every election, every opposition leader, every governor general and every premier. See why some made their marks, why some are terrible, and learn all the crazy stories of our political history.
Amor De Cosmos
The second premier of British Columbia is also one of the most famous premiers the province ever had. Calling himself Lover of the Universe, Amor De Cosmos was a major reason that British Columbia joined Confederation. He pushed for responsible government & free enterprise but today is remembered for his racist attitudes and later mental breakdown. John Foster McCreight
John Foster McCreight was born in Ireland, lived in Australia and eventually found his way to Victoria. Happy with his law books, he was suddenly chosen to become the first premier of British Columbia. He was never comfortable, nor popular, in the job. As a result, his time in the big seat was short. We have reached the fifth premier of Nova Scotia in our series. He was actually the sixth premier, but as Sir John Sparrow David Thompson was already covered on the podcast, I skipped him. Today, I look at the man they called "Dief The Chief", John Diefenbaker. Our 13th prime minister from 1957-1963, he took his party to an unprecedented high but within a decade, was out as leader. A fascinating man, who changed Canada. Louis St. Laurent
Today, I look at Canada's 12th PM, Louis St. Laurent. Reluctant into politics at the age of 59, he would become prime minister in 1948 and serve until 1957. During that time, he changed the face of Canada immensely. R.B. Bennett
Today, I look at arguably the richest man to ever be Prime Minister, who served during the first half of The Great Depression, R.B. Bennett. While he was unable to stem the tide of The Depression, he would bring in institutions we have to this day, and is more than just a rich man during a poor time. William Lyon Mackenzie King
He served as prime minister for almost 22 years, more than anyone else in our history. He guided Canada through the last part of The Great Depression and through the Second World War. Despite all that, William Lyon Mackenzie King continues to be a reclusive, often overlooked person from our history. Today, I explore his life and career. Arthur Meighen
While Arthur Meighen served as prime minister twice, in two very short terms, his impact on Canada came as a Parliamentarian. With a deep hatred of William L.M. King, and a distrust of foreigners and unions, he is one of Canada's more unique leaders. Today, I look at our ninth prime minister, Arthur Meighen. Sir Robert Borden
Despite guiding Canada through the First World War, and gaining further independence from the British Empire, Sir Robert Borden is often lost in the shuffle of our early prime ministers. Today, I look at the life of Canada's eighth prime minister. Sir Wilfrid Laurier
When a list of Canada's greatest prime ministers is compiled, Sir Wilfrid Laurier is usually near the top. While he did much for our country, he also put in place discriminatory immigration policies and may have had a son with the wife of his law partner. Today, I look at this interesting man. Sir Charles Tupper
His 69 days as Prime Minister is the shortest term in our history, but this last surviving Father of Confederation was instrumental in the formation of our country and the intercontinental railroad. Mackenzie Bowell
Our fifth Prime Minister had a 50 year career as a Parliamentarian but many only remember him as the man whose cabinet pushed him out of power over the Manitoba Schools Question. Today, I look at the interesting life of the prime minister with a great beard, Mackenzie Bowell. Sir John Sparrow David Thompson
He is considered the greatest prime minister Canada never had. A promising career began when he took over from Sir John Abbott, but ended too soon with a heart attack while at lunch in England. Today, I look at our fourth prime minister. Sir John Abbott
The man who said he hated politics would find himself as Canada's third PM after the death of Sir John A. Macdonald. While his time as PM was short, he was a very interesting man who had a large impact on Canada's early history. Alexander Mackenzie
Our second Prime Minister started as a stonemason with little money and eventually found himself as an unexpected prime minister. During his five years in power, he would change Canada immensely, and bring out many things we still have to this day. Today, I look at the man who refused knighthoods, Alexander Mackenzie.
