David Blaine is known around the world and a magician and illusionist. However, he has also had a parallel life doing endurance stunts, apparently for real without illusion (though some believe otherwise).
This episode deals with my personal favourite of these stunts, when he tested the limits of human endurance, both physical and psychological, living in a plexiglass box for 44 days in London in 2003 with only water to sustain him.
One of the ironic things about this stunt is that he was both alone in isolation but was also surrounded by a daily throng of visitors who kept him going as he grew weaker, and kept him entertained as he watched the world go by…

We complete the reading of Antony's longform essay with the dramatic sinking and its aftermath. Ordinary humans of all levels of means and status fight for their lives against the slow, inevitable creep of death, and after the disaster there's equal measures of genuine humanity and ugly scapegoating
The story of R.M.S. Titanic and its unfortunate fate seems to have everything, both good and bad, in terms of how society views itself, its apparently superior relationship to nature and people’s relationships to their fellow man. This is a historical event but it’s also a story full of drama and human interest, and one that has been subject to constant revision in the 110 years since the ship sank.

In an edited version of what was originally a video podcast (link below), Antony and Luke Thompson dissect the seminal Canadian documentary written by law professor Joel Bakan and directed by Mark Achbar and Jennifer Abbott.
Although often run by people with decent intentions, the modern corporation, complete with its legally-determined 'rights of a person', has become a monster that seeks to devour all that stands in its own way while polluting the environment and often ruining lives. You may be shocked to hear the documentary's diagnosis of this legal monster, which we outline during the talk.
Some of the talking heads (including critics of the entity, corporation CEOs and everything in between) include Noam Chomsky, Michael Moore and Naomi Klein.

Nicnac Marsh has a podcast that delves into his psyche and the challenges of the complex business of existence in an ever-changing and increasingly confusing world. I was delighted to make 2 appearances on his show around this time last year so this latest offering is a compilation of the two.
Our talk goes to many different places but there is particular emphasis on creativity and also discussions on how the world might actually work beyond the propaganda and some discussion of John Lennon, which was Nicnac’s original entry point to my work.
There are audio clips included to complement the conversation and also musical contributions from Nicnac, myself and others

The BBC, once considered the bastion of fairness in journalism, has in recent times begun to wear its propaganda on its sleeve. Yes Minister, which later became Yes Prime Minister, was a BBC sitcom that ran from the late 1970s to the late 80s. On one level it was an extremely well-scripted and funny comedy, but it also offered a very profound and only slightly exaggerated look at the very interesting but also rather dark and slightly insane way in which we and our lives are governed by those at the top of the power game.
Indeed, it seems to get more and more relevant as time goes on, and this podcast explores the various levels of the show and the way in which its message seems to have been somewhat lost in the comedy aspect of it.
This is mostly a solo effort from Antony but there is a coda included which includes 'spiritual brother' of this podcast Julian Charles of 'The Mind Renewed'

We talk about some of our own experiences and then look at this thorny topic from the perspectives of creativity, diet, sleep, technology/social media, music, comedy and the importance of perspective itself. We also give book & other recommendations and discuss various coping mechanisms. 'Five Leaves Left' reviewed on the 'Love That Album' podcast https://lovethatalbumpodcast.blogspot...
In this final part of our look at the highly-recommended 1998 book, Antony reads extracts related to bringing about change in a realistic way, dealing with anger & anxiety, building self-esteem, mindfulness/meditation, and the basic spiritual values that can lead to a truly spiritual life (with no necessity to move to Tibet and become a monk!)
East meets West as Tensin Gyatso, better known as 'The Dalai Lama' (in fact the 14th Dalai Lama), and American psychiatrist Howard Culter exchange ideas on what constitutes happiness and how we can train our minds and alter the human outlook that shapes our perceptions of events and the world itself.
Both the book and this podcast series are full of impactful and easy-to-use ideas to enrich our life experience and indeed that of others, and Antony adds comments on the text and some of his own insights based on his life experiences

Nick Drake was an English singer-songwriter whose work was only fully recognised long after his tragic, untimely death in 1974 at the age of 26. This podcast is a 2-part reading of an essay about Nick written by your humble host, and between the two parts Antony talks to master guitarist Kester Jones about Nick Drake's music and guitar technique, with Kester also providing demonstrations of songs using the legendary alternate tunings. As the title suggests, today's episode looks at the methods of (often very subtle) suggestion used fairly openly by the powers-that-be to 'nudge' the public towards following certain policies in this most surreal of eras, which has been dominated by an unseen enemy and much public discussion about how to cope with it. There is some initial discussion of what propaganda actually means, as it has different strands and slightly differing definitions, depending on who you ask. Julian Charles and Antony navigate these choppy waters with a myriad of references, observations and ideas.

At the same time there are plenty of wild theories that have no basis in fact. This episode is a reading of the short but powerful 1935 book 'War Is A Racket', written not by a conspiracy theorist living in his parents' basement (admittedly, they didn't really exist in 1935!) but by a highly-decorated Marine Corps Major General. I intersperse it with a few comments of my own and the reading is followed by Mark Twain's 'The War Prayer' and Antony's song 'Lessons of War'

I hope that the combination of the songs and our commentary will be an interesting and enlightening journey

Douglas Valentine is an author, investigator, journalist and poet and also a perfect L.A.L.O. (Life And Life Only) guest since his work and life are a combination of seeking the truth about potentially dark areas of life while promoting self-development and a spiritual centre through his poetry. In this information-packed conversation, we mostly focus on Vietnam and the C.I.A, the latter being the subject of Doug's latest book, but there is a wider discussion about propaganda methods used and honed through the ages and up to the present day. The conversation is top-and-tailed with clips from two comedy legends with insights on how the world really works. A link to Doug's website can be found below

The conclusion of a discussion hosted by Antony about the famous '10 Rillington Place' murder case of the 1940s and 1950s and the shocking events in what was then the run-down area of Notting Hill in West London.
We end this part of the discussion with our considered opinions on the responsibility or otherwise of John Christie and Timothy Evans for the tragic and much-debated deaths of Beryl and Geraldine Evans.
Lending their expertise and insights are Jonathan Oates, the author of 'John Christie: Biography of a Serial Killer', True Crime historian Lindsay Siviter and John Curnow, writer of ‘The Murders, Myths and Reality of 10 Rillington Place’, details of which are on his website https://www.10-rillington-place.co.uk.

In a sinister change of pace for the podcast, Antony hosts a discussion of the famous '10 Rillington Place' murder case, which includes critiques of the various books and film and television representations of the shocking events in this tiny house in a run-down area of West London in the 1940s and 1950s, as well as speculation on who really was responsible for the tragic and much-debated deaths of Beryl and Geraldine Evans Lending their expertise and insights are Jonathan Oates, the author of 'John Christie: Biography of a Serial Killer', True Crime historian Lindsay Siviter and John Curnow, writer of ‘The Murders, Myths and Reality of 10 Rillington Place’, details of which are on his website https://www.10-rillington-place.co.uk.

Antony reads an essay of his about the power of this phrase to shut down debate and avoid difficult questions. It was originally written in 2014 but the main points hold true and there are intermittent comments that bring things up to date

James Corbett of the Corbett Report joins me to discuss a number of topics around the theme of alternative information and how to combat the propaganda, both intentional and in some cases unintentional, that is all around us. We discuss how we came to have non-mainstream worldviews, how a global conspiracy can and provably has happened, our experiences in Asia and how we can all change the world in our own way every day. After all that, we end the talk with a few minutes of talk about a band we're both rather fond of!
