The Cricket Slouch
A fun cricket podcast by a group of friends, who worship at the altar of the 22-yard strip bookended by 3 sticks. We love to talk cricket, have a laugh, include new people, express some polarising opinions (perhaps) and hope to help spread the word of the sport to far reaching corners. We try to keep it as kosher as we can, but there may be a few expletives every now and then. Huge thanks to Noman W and Umangi H for the brilliant podcast cover art. Tune composed using Garage Band and limited imagination.
The One where we preview the India-Australia series

A preview of the India-Australia series with Bhavin.

We talk about the likely team compositions, playing XIs, venues, pitches, missed selections and a likely outcome of the series. It appears that our curse has struck again and Hazlewood was pronounced injured soon after this podcast was recorded.. ouch..

The One on England's rise from the Ashes

Today I am joined by our regular collaborator James, and our esteemed guest Dan Weston.

In this episode we talk about England’s rise from (since) the Ashes in tests, and their superior performances in white ball cricket that has led them to hold two WC concurrently.

We also talk about the upcoming series against NZ, the Ashes obviously, and where does Eng cricket go from here, esp with the rise of their stock in various white ball leagues.

So sit back and relax and enjoy the conversation with your favourite English tea and scones.

Dan tweets from the handle @SAAdvantage and his substack is https://danweston.substack.com/

The one where Cricket Sucks !

In this episode, Sandeep, Shounak, Ajith and I talk about the aspects of the sport that frustrate and annoy us the most, about why cricket sucks as a sport, especially to someone new to it.

This one is about how cricket can become more standardised in its implementation of the laws and regulations and just do away with silly things like "fair play" codes.

We also touch up a bit on the recent international series and the u-19 womens T20 World Cup briefly, and coin a new word "Mankwin" !

FYI, Shounak is on @Shounak_WA and Ajith runs his own podcast named The Armchair Cricket Podcast, and he can be found at @ArmchairCricPod.

I am on @Cricketing_Conv as usual.

Acknowledgement to Noman and Umangi for their excellent artwork for the podcast cover art.

The One with the 2023 Expectations

Welcome to another episode of The Cricket Slouch and this is SP, your usual host.

Today I am joined by my recurring collaborators, Shounak and Sandeep, and we pay our respects to a few cricket personalities that left us last year and also look forward to what we most look forward to in 2023 from a cricketing perspective.

Similar to the last episode, we have a book mentioned today, and that is called -

The Unforgiven, Mercenaries or Missionaries – by Ashley Gray. It is available in hardcover and as an e-book on Amazon

https://www.amazon.com.au/Unforgiven-Ashley-Gray/dp/1785315323

We also highlight a small personal milestone for the podcast - of reaching 1000 unique downloads - and this would not have been possible without the support of all the listeners. Hopefully TCS can continue this year too with the sort of eclectic content that we have done so far and are open to suggestions by the listeners.

Thanks as usual to Noman and Umangi for their contribution to the podcast artwork.

The One with All the Upsets
For those following global cricket this year, you’d have noticed the number of “upsets” we have seen at the T20 World Cup and a few others outside the global tournaments. This led me to think about what some of these upsets would mean for the respective teams and the legacy they would lead to. So I got round to talking with Shounak and Sandeep about this and we went down nostalgia lane to recall some of the more memorable wins by unfancied teams in modern cricketing history and what mark they left on us personally and in cricket in general. And in doing so, we may end up upsetting a few people or re-open old wounds, but that is not our intention. Please have a support person with you if some of these memories causes distress. And ohh, we also talk about a potential new format for the World Cups so as to protect certain teams.Links to a book and YouTube video mentioned in the episode as below -Video link for Netherlands beating Australia in 1964.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hKzfnkXBuzkAnd the book mentioned is -Evita burned down our Pavilion : A Cricket Odyssey through Latin America by Timothy Abraham and James Coyne. It is available on Kindle and via Amazon at this stage. https://www.amazon.com.au/Evita-Burned-Down-Our-Pavilion-ebook/dp/B07TXNM2VS/ref=tmm_kin_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=1671358944&sr=8-1As usual, credit to Noman and Umangi for the cover art for the podcast.

The one with the Ten Commandments.
In this episode I sit with Nitesh of the Broken Cricket Dreams blog to discuss his Open Letter to BCCI and the Ten Commandments a few friends and I came up with in 2011. Although this is specifically targeted at the BCCI and Indian cricket in general, I suppose the template can fit any team as we have seen from England's example. The Ten Commandments are - 1) To get rid of partial, biased zonal selectors and impose limitations on tenure based on results.2) Personnel at the top, such as coaches, to be based on qualifications, and to consider different coaches for tests and ODIs. Also having at least one former cricketer on the Board.3) Preparing a diverse range of pitches and having at least two major national venues to assist pace, and at least one in every State.4) Improvement in resources for the domestic games, optimising facilities at NCA and collaborating with specialists such as MRF Pace academy.5) Selection of the team based on form rather than reputation, no automatic for seniors.6) Horses for courses policy in selecting the playing XI and to be flexible with this depending on venue.7) Regular matches overseas and home for the Colts and A sides.8) Transition pathway for emerging players to make it to the national side, and using series against weaker teams to test them out.9) Encouraging players to play in the county league, or similar, to gain valuable experience. 10) To plan for major tournaments and series about a year in advance and to breed a mentality of winning and team-comes-first attitude. Nitesh is found on Twitter @cricket_broken , and his blog is at brokencricketdeams.com I am on @cricketing_convPodcast artwork courtesy of Noman and Umangi.

If Bazball giveth, it also taketh
In this episode I chat with James Whitaker (once again) about the recent turnaround in England's test fortunes, their recent white ball performance failures in a post-Morgan era, predictions for Eng-SA test series and a general ranting and raving about something we arent happy about, which makes us a couple of old grumpy gits.
