BOOKIN' IT
BOOKIN’ IT is just four friends talking ‘bout books. So why should you listen? Well, for starters, we’re Christians. This brings another level to our discussions. Second, we’re classically educated homeschoolers. So join us as we discuss books, through our "young men" point of view, as Christians, homeschoolers, and as friends.
91. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

"There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." Thus begins the book of discussion today. What medieval planet did CS Lewis (maybe) base this book on? What's up with Aslan in this book? Is it weird that there's no villain? All this and more! Take a listen!

90. Prince Caspian

The gang is all in one room as they discuss everybody's favorite Narnia book when they're a kid: Prince Caspian. Is Lewis paganizing Aslan? Is Reepicheep the best side-character in literature? IS THE SINGLE BEST DESCRIPTION OF A DECAPIATION IN THIS BOOK???? All pressing questions, and the guys are on the case!

Join Cooper, Isaiah, and Tanner for as wide ranging a conversation as the journey from southern Calormen to Archenland on C.S. Lewis’ The Horse and His Boy. Are the Narnia books based on the seven planets from medieval cosmology? Was Lewis a universalist? (A precursor to The Last Battle conversation) Is this book effective at worldbuilding? 48. SSS 6: The Inexplicable Chicken

One of our patrons, the legendary Chris Hagedon, sent us a short story he had written and we read it on the podcast! It's a pretty great story. Listen to Matthew and Cooper discuss.

Email us questions here:
bookinitpod4@gmail.com

You can listen to Chris read this story on his podcast Like Lightning, or you can read the story in full here:

My family has a pet. But this isn't any ordinary pet—this is their pampered and adored chicken. It disgusts me. Why am I the only one who sees their pet as the revolting beast that it is? How could anyone love its fragile feathered body, creepy cluck, and beady black eyes?

I had had enough, so I did the rational thing. I sent the clucking creature to my friend Chris—by mail. One bliss-filled chicken-free day went by, then another, and then another. To my monumental dismay, I received the returned box on the fourth day with the chicken clucking inside with no explanation for the return.

Fine, I didn't like Chris anyway. My new plan was so simple! I picked up the box and tiptoed outside to the back gate, stuck the box over the gate, dumped the chicken out, and it floated down to the ground. I scampered back to the house jumping up and down with glee. I had finally done it!

That evening, as I was about to get into bed I thought I saw a little movement from within my closet—I knew it was nothing, as all was well with the world. Then, just as I peacefully fell asleep, my closet door slowly creaked open. If I had stayed awake any longer I would have heard it. I also would have heard the talons scraping the wooden floor coming nearer and nearer to my bed. But it was too late. I was asleep.

Then, in the middle of the night, I felt something weighing down on my chest—something warm and meaty. My heart began to beat rapidly. I awoke suddenly—opened my eyes—and saw—in the dark blanket of shadow—on my chest—the beast—the chicken staring down into my eyes!

27. To Kill a Mockingbird, Part 1

In their first episode on To Kill a Mockingbird, BOOKIN' IT gives baggage, and talks about why the book is being/has been banned in some schools in the US, as well as beginning to actually discuss the book. Tanner's new educational motto is born, Matthew and Isaiah give the plot summary/lessons the characters learn, and Cooper gives them arguably the weirdest Donor Shout-out schtick. YOU. DON'T. WANT. TO. MISS. OUT.

Of the one who made it all."

21. The Wingfeather Saga: The Warden and the Wolf King, Part 2

We walk you through the 2nd part through the beginning of the 3rd part. This is probably the more critical of the three episodes we're doing. Don't worry; we still had good things to say about this book. But what exactly do we criticize? Listen to find out.

18. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, Part 1

"Saturday morning was come, and all the summer world was bright and fresh, and brimming with life."

Do we covet what is difficult for us to attain? When does a talent become showing off? Did Tanner read and abridged version that "Appeared on his bookshelf" and didn't know it was abridged????? All of these are questions BOOKIN' IT asks and answers--besides the last one.

15. The Wingfeather Saga: North! Or Be Eaten, Part 2

This time, on the Cooper&Matthew Show... just kidding! All members were present and accounted for this time. Tanner hopped on this time and gave his baggage and thoughts on the WFS. As they talk through the rest of the book, they have a fun, friendly talk and discussion, discussing things like Podo, The Scale Raker, and The Fork Factory. Woe! (Editors note: that 'Woe' was describing the Fork Factory, not the episode.) (Editors note: P.S. The episode is good, just thought I'd let you know.)

This time on "The Cooper and Matthew Show", the boys talk through the first third or so of North! Or be Eaten - asking questions like, “Who’s your favorite character?” “Is Peet the Sock Man the same as Artham Wingfeather?” And of course, “Did you like that there were less footnotes??(!!!)”

13. The Pit and the Pendulum

Um, wow. What a... dark and depressing short story. Why in the (apparently dark and depressing) world did Poe want to write about an insane man in intense physical and psychological pain? Cooper and Matthew wrestle with this question throughout the course of the episode. Did they answer this dark and depressing question? You'll really have to listen to find out.

12. The Wingfeather Saga: On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness, Part 2

BOOKIN' IT, minus two, wraps up their discussion of On the Edge of the Dark Sea of Darkness. After an embarrassing performance of plot guessing last week, Matthew at last had things revealed to him he did not previously know. Both Cooper and Matthew realize that they've never followed their younger siblings into something dangerous, and thus cement themselves as bad older brothers. Did they redeem themselves?!?! Listen to find out.

6. The Call of the Wild, Part 1

After giving his most ferocious wolf howl (not very ferocious), Cooper gives an update on College Football and asks Matthew, Isaiah, and Tanner their baggage on the book of discussion. After each giving their respective baggage, the boys (or young men, rather,) engage in a discussion on the question, “Is having a moral nature a handicap in the Wild?” After maybe losing their credibility, they are saved the AFT. What exactly is the AFT? Listen to find out.

4. Sign of the Beaver, Part 1

For hopefully the last time, Cooper gets the name of the book wrong in the intro. Once he's corrected, they're off. First, they apologize again for last week, then they say to scrap almost everything else and give the real updates. Then they're into the book, discussing about how scared they'd have been if they had been in Matt's (the character) place. They talk about their emotional struggles with Latin, and much more! Also, sorry about Matthew's audio quality. He and his family just moved and he couldn't find his mic.

3. Number the Stars

In this episode Cooper, Tanner, Matthew, and Isaiah talk about how they first heard about Number the stars. They talk about whether Annmarie and her family should have lied to hide Ellen from the Nazi Soldiers. They also talk about whether Lois Lowery described World II well considering it’s a kids book.

2. The Hobbit, Part 2

In their second (and much longer) episode Cooper, Isaiah, Tanner, and Matthew talk about when and where they first experienced the Hobbit. They compare the movies to the book quite a bit (sorry 'bout that), and talk about what Tolkien would have said about the movies; namely the Elf-Dwarf love story. Then Cooper claims that the last 25% of the book is the weakest part and the others jump to the end's defense. Later on, they talk about why parents are more willing to let their kids read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings over Harry Potter even though the Bible condemns magic of all shapes and sizes. Did they make a good case as to why parents let their kids read Tolkien rather than Rowling? Listen to find out.

1. The Hobbit, Part 1

In which Cooper Cobbs, Tanner Lewis, Isaiah Raetchi, and Matthew Killingsworth discuss and debate The Hobbit. In their first episode, they discuss Tolkien's unmatched style of writing. Later, Cooper endeavors (although he shouldn't have had to) to convince the others that (a) Tolkien is the best fantasy writer ever, and (b) that Gandalf is the OG wizard and Dumbledore is a rip-off. Hopefully, after the heated arguments—er, discussions, aforementioned, they all became friends again. But, did they?? Listen to find out.
