Jeffrey Biegel is a respected pianist of traditional repertoire, starting life nearly deaf. He studied with Adele Marcus and has built a career of old and new music. He created the first classical livestreams in 1997 and most recently, the first 50 state project free to orchestras celebrating America with Peter Boyer's "Rhapsody in Red, White & Blue". Mr. Biegel also recorded the critical edition of "Rhapsody in Blue", and composed "Three Reflections" of JFK, RBG and MLK. He has created over two dozen commissioning projects while simultaneously playing in the grand tradition of the piano, most notably reflective of Josef Lhevinne.

Lullabies For Piano And Cello is a collection of instrumental works inspired by Icelandic folk songs. Accompanied by cellist Steiney Sigurðardóttir, the duo tracked the album in Reykjavik’s Eldborg Concert Hall. Following the implementation of choir, orchestra, and cinematic heft on 2022’s Solon Islandus, Gabríel made a conscious decision to strip the sound down to just these two instruments. As opposed to electronics, multi-tracking provided expansive flourishes. Together, Gabríel and Steiney unlocked a striking sound reliant on their quiet chemistry and a rich connection.
The 10-track album traces its origin to a famous collection of Icelandic melodies entitled Icelandic Folk Songs, which was unearthed by Gabríel at an antique bookshop in his home city of Reykjavik. Originally published in 1906, this out-of-print tome collated various folk numbers and lullabies with rare sheet music. Gabríel decided to not only reimagine five of the book’s tunes but to also pen five of his own lullabies as an homage to tradition.
“I have faith in the power of melody, and lullabies encapsulate both history and nostalgia,” says Gabríel. “When I’m writing music, nostalgia is my favorite feeling to capture. It’s a complex emotion because it evokes both sadness and happiness at the same time. Lullabies are core musical memories for all of us, and with Lullabies for Piano and Cello I hope to unlock them for you.”
At just 24 years old, Gabríel responds to ancient Viking folk songs with the perspective of a postmodern Gen Z composer. By challenging himself to compose contemporary lullabies, he has explored his own fantasy world – a fantasy for his generation. And like all the best fantasy worlds, it is rooted in the history and mythology of his people, the Icelanders. After generating over 100 million streams for his original instrumental compositions and earning widespread international acclaim, Gabríel summons the spirit of timeless Icelandic lullabies with a twist of his own magic.
I loved talking with Gabriel because I learned A LOT. A lot about Icelandic history and linguistics. A lot about creating a brand new work with a sense of nostalgia. A lot about self-promotion and how having a record deal doesn't mean that all of your problems are over. This was a fascinating conversation and I know you will enjoy it!

Composer and educator Dr. Joseph Sowa writes music that revels in vivid colors and rich textures. The Michigan City Chamber Music Festival (MCCMF) had its inaugural season in August of 2002. It was founded by husband/wife team Nicolas Orbovich and Sunny Gardner-Orbovich. The MCCMF operates under several guiding principals. The first priority is always artistic quality. The MCCMF attains this through the presence of world class musicians. Each of them has formidable performance skills and impressive credentials. Another is to forge and strengthen the threefold artistic relationship between great chamber music, the audience and the performer. This is accomplished through interactive presentations by the Festival Musicians. The MCCMF performers believe that oral presentation regarding the history, complexities and any other interesting aspects of the piece to be performed is vital for the audience’s enjoyment.
Nic Orbovich, co-founder, is a concert violinist with over 20 years professional experience. He has concertized and competed all over the world. It became apparent to him that his craft, classical music, was indeed dying in the United States. The reasons are perhaps too numerous to mention here, but the solution was simple: instill a passion for great music back into the average member of society. Simple, yes, but very difficult to accomplish...
I loved this conversation with Nic because he's so real about the difficulties and rewards of LEADERSHIP. You have to have a vision, you have to be pragmatic about your actual resources. You have to know what you want, and you have to lean on the people who are more expert than you at getting it. You have to be Honest, Open-minded, and Willing, to use Nic's framework.
And I really enjoy talking to the creators of organizations that LAST. After the excitement of the start-up phase, how do you keep going?

Many young musicians dream of making a comfortable living as a solo artist playing recitals, appearing with orchestras, selling CDs. Frederick Moyer has been doing that for 40 years, making a living entirely on performances and record sales. The last teaching job he had was in 1983. What makes Fred particularly interesting to speak to on the subject of solo careers is that you probably have never heard of him! It is one thing to build a career out of a huge splashy success that puts you on the map. Fred has done it without ever having a major New York manager, or a recording on a major label.
Since 1994, when he started keeping track, he has played over 7000 concerts. He has sold over 50,000 classical and jazz CDs, has played in 44 countries, and in such far-flung venues as Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Sydney Opera House, Windsor Castle, Carnegie Recital Hall, Tanglewood, and the Kennedy Center, and has appeared as piano soloist with most of the major orchestras of the United States as well as many orchestras of Europe, Asia, South America, Africa and Australia.
An avid computer programmer, he often incorporates technology into his concerts and owns patents for music-related inventions including the MoyerCam which allows everyone in the audience to see the pianist's hands during a concert. He performs note-for-note transcriptions of such jazz pianists as Oscar Peterson, Bill Evans and Erroll Garner, bringing this great American music onto classical music stages. In 2009, he and Dr. Paul Green unveiled two unknown piano works by Robert Schumann. Many composers have written for Moyer, including David Ott whose Second Piano Concerto Moyer recorded with the London Symphony. Other composers include Pulitzer Prize winners George Walker and Ned Rorem.

Today on the podcast, you’ll hear violinist Kerstin Tenney talk about her upcoming debut album, LIGHT. We spent a lot of time talking about the long arc of her project - and if you have a project, a concept, an album in your heart that is not yet in the world, you will love this conversation.
Kerstin Tenney is a professional violinist based in Salt Lake City, Utah. As an active freelance musician, Kerstin works frequently on recording projects, does solo work, and performs regularly with the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. She has toured with the Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra on stages across the world, including Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Philharmonie and the Vienna Musikverein. Kerstin was the featured violin soloist on the soundtrack for the award-winning documentary, Bears of Durango, currently playing on PBS.
LIGHT is Kerstin's debut album, for which she commissioned 4 new works and 8 new arrangements. The album was produced by award-winning classical producer and sound engineer, Simon Kiln, and British Award winning composer, Donald Fraser.
I really loved talking to Kerstin and hearing how much her heart and her vision led the way throughout the ten year process of bringing this album into the world. She was patient with the project, she let new ideas in to guide her as it developed, and she took the actions to make it happen.

Peg Luke has been Emmy and Grammy nominated, and is an 11 time Carnegie Hall solo artist. She’s the creator of "Psalm Space". She currently has over 200 thousand Spotify streams, and has professional distribution, radio promotion,has professional producers around the country and is professionally media managed and sync licensed. Peg Is a Christian Meditative Classical Pioneer who battles a rare autoimmune disease and has not been able to perform or present in person since the start of the pandemic because of this. She does everything from in house.
When her publicist first reached out to me, I looked at her website and listened to some of her work, and thought, oh, this is not for me. And it isn’t! A meditative christian music video is 100% not my jam! But my next thought was, WOW, this is obviously for someone. And whenever I see a classically trained musician doing something that clearly lights THEM up, and having found THEIR audience, and oh let’s see, having over 200K Spotify streams and professional distribution and a really PUT TOGETHER website and media kit, I get interested.
The amazing thing about a creative career is that you don’t have to appeal to everyone, you just have to find your people and create what they need and want. And clearly Peg is doing that, and with such joy in her work and her social media, and all of this makes her an amazing fit for this podcast. Listen for the moment where I just about fall over in discovering that this is her THIRD ACt - something she started surprisingly late in life, too. She’s an inspiration and I know you will love this conversation.

Ariel Rebecca (Rivka) Grossman is a native New Yorker, who trained at LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and the Performing Arts and Joffrey Ballet School. In 2008, she founded an all-female contemporary company, Ariel Rivka Dance. Most recently, Ariel received a 2023 Fellowship from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
Ariel's work has been presented worldwide, including BAM Fisher, NJPAC, Bryant Park, NYLA, Baruch Performing Arts Center, Martha Graham Studio Theater, NYU Tisch, Rutgers University, Roxbury Performing Arts Center, and in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Houston, Cleveland, Florida, Oklahoma, Detroit, Memphis, Istanbul, Turkey, and in 2023, Perigord, France and Bari, Italy.
She has been commissioned by Dance Lab NY, Konverjdans, Ballet Vero Beach, and Skidmore College. Collaborations include Rioult Dance NY, Taylor 2, Heidi Latsky, Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company, and Sean Curran. Ariel is a past recipient of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (New) Moves Fellowship, Monira Performance Residency, and a Nimbus Arts Center artist residency. ARD is an awardee of Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation, the Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Charles & Joan Gross Family Foundation, the O’Donnell-Green Music & Dance Foundation, Jersey City Council of the Arts, and New Jersey State Council on the Arts and more.
Ariel draws inspiration from the struggles and joys of the human experience, particularly through being a woman and mother of two. Through collaboration, Ariel encourages her artists to bring themselves to the work—molding pieces that are striking, evocative, and multi-layered.
This conversation was fascinating. Firstly, because I loved hearing Ariel talk about her art in a way that was both brand new to me and also completely relatable. The connections are so clear and it’s amazing to think about movement, interpretation, and leadership in a totally different field than my own. Secondly, because I loved hearing her take real ownership of her own strengths - I don’t hear this nearly often enough from people, even the amazingly accomplished people I’m interviewing right here, and ESPECIALLY from working musicians.

Julian Loida is a Boston-based composer percussionist, composer, educator, and producer. His range of sound and genre exploration is largely a product of his synesthesia - music is a literal full-body experience for him, with sounds often invoking involuntary sensations of color, texture, or even taste. For Julian, music is a visual art. In all of his work, his goal is to break down artistic barriers and use music as a tool for healing. He regularly collaborates with dancers to compose scores for their performances, and partners with visual artists, songwriters/composers, and other musicians of all stripes.
His new LP, "Giverny", will be released on May 19 via Gratitude Sound. The video for the title track, which we talked about on the podcast, is HERE.

Christine Smith is co-founder and co-owner of Frosted Lens Entertainment, an entertainment and informational content development company. Prior to her work at Frosted Lens, she held the position of Music & Sound Director/Composer-in-Residence for RPR Studios for 10 years. Her work has been heard in award-winning films, commercials, and promotional videos. She is currently the host and editor of the podcast "Musicians vs the World" where she explores the many aspects of Musician life.
A classically trained pianist, Christine studied with concert pianists Adelina Krivoshena and Asya Markova in her youth. She continued her studies in Piano Performance at Brigham Young University studying with Dr. Jeffrey Shumway and Dr. Scott Holden.
Since then Christine has enjoyed performing in solo recitals and in collaboration with various musicians, bands, and ensembles across the country. Though her first love is classical music, she has had the pleasure of working and learning from great musicians of all genres. She has performed as soloist, collaborator, and conductor. And because she loves teaching almost as much as she loves performing, she coaches a few favorite piano students in her home-town studio.
What I loved about this interview was Christine’s openness to sharing all of the vulnerable details of her story, her pivot from full-time performing due to a chronic illness, AND the effortless-seeming way she used her strengths and her skills to step into a whole new way of working.
What I also really noticed was the idea that you can only do what you can do! Even if you aren’t battling a chronic illness, you only get so many spoons per day, and maybe the key to a fulfilling life in music is to look for the intersection of what you are great at, what people will pay you for, AND what you can sustainably do in a day, a week, a month. It’s worth being conscious of your energy, not just because you can break yourself with overwork - I’m looking at you, 29 year old Jennet - but also because you can do your BEST work when you are taking the BEST care of yourself. Quality over quantity, because YOUR ARTISTRY MATTERS.

I found myself musing today about timeframes and focus and how PRODUCTIVITY interacts with CREATIVITY. There are ways to PUSH your projects forward, but perhaps there are also benefits to letting them EVOLVE and allowing yourself to be the whole rich being that you are.

Today on the podcast, I talk with Alecia Lawyer, Founder, Artistic Director, Principal oboist of ROCO. She’s got the most exciting ideas about orchestral possibilities in the 21st century, and I wish more people were as innovative as she.
Named by Musical America as one of classical music’s Top 30 Influencers for 2015 and a Lorée oboe artist in 2019, Texas native, Alecia Lawyer, is the Founder, Artistic Director, and Principal Oboist of ROCO, a professional music ensemble that flexes from 1 to 40 musicians from around the US and Canada, including guest conductors from around the world. Expanding the repertoire, ROCO has commissioned and world premiered over 100 works from living composers. The group performs dozens of concerts annually in multiple venues throughout Houston, many of which are broadcast nationally and livestreamed to the world. Known as “The Most Fun You Can Have with Serious Music!” ROCO has been called a trailblazer and arts disrupter and is leading the sector in innovation.
Calling her business model “Wildcatting in the Arts”, Ms. Lawyer was named a finalist for Texas Musician of the Year (along with Willie Nelson) and was listed as one of Houston’s Top 50 Most Influential Women. She is a proud senior fellow of American Leadership Forum, a trustee for Episcopal High School, and a member of the Institute for Composer Diversity. She has received numerous awards, including the Gutsy Gal Award from Houston Woman Magazine and Sigma Alpha Iota Musician of the Year. She regularly presents her entrepreneurial model and dynamic ideas to conservatories, universities, and music festivals around the US, such as Juilliard, Yale, SMU, Round Top, and the Texas Music Festival, using ROCO as a case study for community-specific orchestra building. Business and social groups in the Greater Houston Area engage her to speak on numerous topics related to the creation, innovation, marketing, and development of the arts.
After receiving her Masters from Juilliard and Bachelors from SMU, both in oboe, Alecia’s career has ranged from recording for John Cage and soloing with Rostropovich, to a contemporary chamber music recital at Carnegie Hall, live radio broadcasts in New York, and disc jockeying for KRTS-92.1FM, Houston, TX. Enjoying a year residency in France, she recorded with the Sorbonne Orchestra, performed recitals in Paris, and concertized with various orchestras and chamber groups in France and Germany. Alecia and her husband Larry have two fantastic sons, Jacob and Zachary. Alecia is an F. Lorée artist.

Canadian violinist Mary-Elizabeth Brown enjoys parallel careers as a performer, pedagogue, entrepreneur and researcher. In recent seasons, she has appeared as an invited soloist with orchestra more than forty times in Europe, Asia, North and South America, as well as numerous chamber music festivals. Her recording of the last 3 Mozart Violin Concerti for Mozart Effect recordings released worldwide in 2017.
In addition to a rich career as a soloist and concertmaster, she is a sought-after teacher, clinician, adjudicator and speaker in Canada and abroad. Since founding the AVIVA Virtual Young Artist Program (the first web-based pre-college music program in the world) she has touched lives around the world, teaching thousands of lessons to students on five continents via webcam, piloting projects aimed at accessibility, and training hundreds of teachers and creative entrepreneurs.
Mary-Elizabeth is widely recognized as a pioneer in the world of innovation in classical music and technology. She recently made international news from The Hong Kong Economic Times to NPR's Science Friday with her design for low-cost stringed instruments using 3D printers and plastic polymers.
I was wild about this conversation. I really appreciated Mary-Elizabeth’s wise take on the portfolio career, on keeping all of your various pots and streams managed, on how to cope with the messy middle parts of projects, and on how to keep growing as an artist and a human as you help others!

Ashley Killam (she/her) has built a multifaceted career as a passionate entrepreneur, non-profit director, freelancer, trumpet player, advocate, and researcher. Killam is the founder of AK Artist Management and is on a lifelong mission to create a more inclusive artistic space.
A champion for creating change within musical programming, Killam launched the first-ever open-source resource for trumpet and brass music by marginalized composers. Since the fall of 2019, she has presented in-person and virtually over 130 times, on topics ranging from building a library of inclusive repertoire to starting a non-profit, commissioning music, and creating a non-traditional career path.
Having found a love in all things organization, Killam created AK Artist Management as a way to use these outreach and marketing skills to build and promote the professional careers of musicians. Killam has worked with powerhouse soloists like trumpeter Mary Elizabeth Bowden, driven educators like hornist Amanda Collins, and groundbreaking chamber groups like Seraph Brass and Calypsus Brass, understanding the goals and needs of every individual and group. Her expertise ranges from booking performances and leading consortiums to website creation, building a brand, and PR work - Killam can do it all.
What inspired me so much about this conversation is Ashley’s can-do attitude, and her obvious love of the work she’s doing. She’s found a way she likes to work, things she likes doing, and has created a way to get paid doing them! This is the very essence of the portfolio career, right? It’s not giving up on music and defeatedly crawling into an arts admin space, it’s ADDING something she loves to something else she loves and making a career out of it. I really loved hearing her energy around both the DOING of her job and the LEARNING of her job. Being willing to not know but to try anyway, being able to trust yourself and your smart organized brain to figure it out - this is brilliant stuff and I know you will love this episode.

Today you’ll hear my interview with JooWan Kim, Composer/Artistic Director of Ensemble Mik Nawooj. You’re going to want to check this ensemble out at their website - I can’t tear myself away from their songs and videos.
Led by composer/pianist, JooWan Kim, Hip Hop Orchestra Ensemble Mik Nawooj (EMN) creates Metamusic by sampling principles of Hip-Hop and Classical. Executed with resident MCs, a lyric soprano, woodwinds, French horn, strings, piano, and drums, the music is rigorous, nuanced, accessible, and free from the dogmas of Western European concert music aesthetic. The result is seamless tête-à-tête with "textures swimming through the sound...like the world's fastest ping-pong game" (Pitchfork) and is considered the "cutting edge of hip-hop" (Huffington Post).
After a successful performance of a novelty piece which featured an MC and chamber ensemble while JooWan Kim was completing his master’s degree at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the MC at the time suggested they make an album together. Six months later and writing about an hour of music, Kim had a profound shift in the direction of his writing. He felt that he found a way out of the stifling contemporary concert music aesthetic in this new way of composition. JooWan crystallized his ideas into Method Sampling, a principle of borrowing or sampling of rationales from related as well as unrelated fields, then reframing them into one's own system.
In 2010, JooWan Kim recruited his best friend from college, Christopher Nicholas, to push the project forward in a serious way. Since then, EMN attracted some of the most excellent classical musicians and MCs in the SF Bay Area while gaining national attention from outlets such as ESPN, Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, NPR, Pitchfork, Upworthy, NowThis, and more.

Adrian Gordon is an internationally performed composer and seasoned music educator. He is the author of the book Note to Self; A Music Director’s Guide for Transitioning to a New School and Building a Thriving Music Program. Adrian wrote Note to Self because though his undergraduate and graduate programs were musically and pedagogically extensive, he never felt as though they touched on those hard-to-navigate areas of transitioning between jobs. Note to Self was written as a bridge for music educators who find themselves in similar situations.
Adrian currently serves as the Director of Orchestras at Providence Day School in Charlotte, NC. He believes in the power of music education in a child’s life and understands the necessity of having passionate, confident, and supported music teachers at the helm, promoting great musical experiences for students.
In addition to teaching, Mr. Gordon is an in-demand conductor and clinician. He is also a composer with Alfred Music as well as the founder of Leap Year Music Publishing, which publishes string music for elementary, middle, and high school ensembles. His compositions appear on the Florida, Texas, Maryland, and Georgia Orchestra Association Music Performance Assessment Lists. His compositions are distributed through JW Pepper and have been performed throughout the world. He takes pride in creating music that is fun and pedagogically sound at all levels.
Adrian received his B.A. in music from the University of Miami, and his master’s degree in music education at Florida International University. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, he currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina with his wife Kelly and their two sons.

Her current season includes no fewer than four world premiere concertos, including Clarice Assad’s new Concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, Jennifer Jolley's Concerto for Brass Quintet with Seraph Brass and the U.S. Army "Pershing's Own", Reena Esmail's Rosa de Sal for Trumpet and Orchestra with the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra, and Tyson Davis's Veiled Light with the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle, which will be performed alongside her husband, trumpeter David Dash. She is the founder and performer in multiple chamber groups, including Seraph Brass, Dash Duo, and Chrysalis Chamber Players.
In today’s interview, we talked about her recent projects, and the importance of expanding and building representation in trumpet and brass repertoire. Mary built her career from scratch, and I know I was inspired by her path to success, her honesty about the behind the scenes work of it, and her journey of increased confidence in her playing and her career. David Krauss is the prodigious host of Speaking Soundly, Co-Founder of ANM (Artful Narratives Media), and Principal Trumpet of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. As a soloist, he has performed with the All-Star Orchestra on their Emmy Award-winning PBS broadcast and was praised by the American Record Guide for his "singing tone, which is luxurious and inviting." He has performed as guest Principal Trumpet with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra, and New York Philharmonic, as well as recorded for film and television, and played on several Broadway shows. David is a highly sought-after instructor at the Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music, Aspen Music Festival and School, and other top conservatories and music festivals throughout the United States.
In this conversation, we started early in David’s story and explored the realities of life for a freelance musician - the ways the work comes and goes, the risks and the magic. We talked about the complicated and fulfilling life of a parent playing in a major opera orchestra.
And we talked about how podcasting - for both of us! - has been a portal into conversations with other artists. How David’’s fascination with the CRAFT of other high-level musicians and creatives is leading to inspiration for him and for his audience. My conversation with Eunbi Kim was absolutely fascinating.
We talked about mentorship and motherhood and artistry, all of which things feel so closely related.
There’s a myth out there about the self-centeredness of artists, about a certain kind of creator who reserves all of their best energy for their MUSIC, letting personal relationships fall by the wayside. I look at a work like Sunday in the Park - the Sondheim musical - which is all about an artist so selfish he ruins the chance of happiness for himself and for the people around him.
But in my conversation with Eunbi, we looked at what it means to have ACCEPTED mentoring and help, and to GIVE BACK by mentoring others. We considered the sacrifices our own mothers have made and what we have done and continue to do for our children. We looked at how it’s possible to be artists AND nurturing, loving humans.
"Creating performances expressing dreamlike “liquid elegance," pianist Eunbi Kim curates programs compelling audiences to meditate on the parts of themselves that are deeply buried. Her intimate performances draw from collaborations with composers, filmmakers, and theater directors to create experiences beyond the boundaries of the piano recital format.
Guided by personal experiences, her recently released album “It Feels Like” (which debuted at #2 on Billboard's Traditional Classical Charts) confronts the multiplicity of truths behind memories, language, and identity and includes world premiere recordings of new works by Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR), Pauchi Sasaki, Angélica Negrón, and Sophia Jani. Last spring, she was an Artist-in-Residence at WNYC’s The Greene Space to work on a 4-night series inspired by the album that explores rituals of healing and disparate identities through music, performance, conversations, and food.
Kim holds a Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music, where she also held a fellowship in the institution’s Center for Music Entrepreneurship. On today’s episode you’ll hear my interview with my brother, singer songwriter James Hearne, who recently sold his house and left his job and moved across the country to go all in on his music career as an adult. This interview is full of gems for the working musician.

I want to admit here that James is not in a classical music niche, nor is he doing innovative entrepreneurial work that pushes the boundaries of what creatives can be in the world. BUT I share this conversation with you because I feel like there’s value in hearing about the hustle, and about the business side of creating the artistic life you want to lead.
You know from my book that I’m not interested in pushing musicians to make their living exclusively through their art. But I AM strongly on the side of creative people choosing the way they want to live and finding ways to make that happen for themselves, and that’s why I find James’s story so inspiring and I hope you will too.

Award winning pianist Donna Weng Friedman enjoys a varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, curator, producer and app developer. Her album Heritage and Harmony: Silver Linings, featuring exclusively AAPI/BIPOC artists, aims to promote understanding and tolerance and combat racism, with all proceeds donated to an organization that supports the AAPI community and fights against racism. Recorded and released during the pandemic, the album was presented with two Silver Medals at the 2022 Global Music Awards.
In collaboration with WQXR, Donna created and produced Heritage and Harmony, a virtual concert series in celebration of Asian Pacific Heritage Month. As an American of Chinese descent, her work with Friends of Thirteen on Asian Americans of New York & New Jersey | WLIW21 - expanding the story-sharing website, highlighting first-person stories about the Asian American experience in our region- was not only meaningful to her, but to her family, friends and community as well.
She is the co-creator and co-host of HER/MUSIC;HER/STORY, a mini-series on WQXR as well as a concert series that shines a light on women composers, past and present. Donna was awarded a New York Women Composers grant for 2022. She was the guest speaker on TEDx Santa Barbara’s series Making Waves: Conversations with Influencers and Disruptors. Donna is the Artistic Advisor of Ariel Rivka Dance, an all-female dance company. Together they will share stories of heritage and harmony through music and dance.
In January and April 2021, Donna was the featured guest artist on the National Women’s History Museum’s series NWHM Presents: Sundays@Home, honoring women whose activism and talents serve to inspire others. On March 8th, 2022, she launched a new education program in collaboration with the National Women’s History Museum called Heritage and Harmony: Her Art, Her Voice, featuring leading female BIPOC role models in the arts who share their stories of heritage, their challenges and their triumphs, as they seek to inspire and empower future generations of groundbreaking young women.
Donna has performed in concert halls worldwide, and appeared as soloist with major symphony orchestras, including the Atlanta, Philadelphia and Shanghai Symphony Orchestras.
The curator of the Donna Weng Friedman '80 Master Class Series at Princeton University, she is also a member of Princeton University Music Department’s Advisory Council. Donna received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Princeton University where she was a University Scholar and a Master of Music Degree from the Juilliard School. She had the honor of studying with the great pedagogue Nadia Boulanger, as well as the incomparable pianist Radu Lupu.
She was the music supervisor and recording artist for the award-winning film documentary “Frames of Life” as well as for the documentaries “Living Liberty” and “Morris Engle: The Independent”. Ms. Weng Friedman created “The Music Bee Club” interactive classical music app series for children ages 2-8 featuring world class musicians, such as principal cellist of the NY Philharmonic Carter Brey and flutist Elizabeth Mann, produced by twentyone-time Grammy Award winner David Frost.
I really admire in her story the instinct to take action, the willingness to use her strengths to create change in the world. How can you imagine doing something similar?

Deb has had a career in music for 35 years. She has seen all sides of the music profession - from orchestra to Broadway shows and even playing with rock bands! She teaches at the high school and college level and contracts musicians for concerts. “I love to play the oboe, but even more than that - I love to create work for music and visual artists - and to make connections between these people and their audiences.”

Daisy Press was raised on the buses, planes, hotels, and stages of a large-scale international rock ’n’ roll tour, on which both her parents performed for over 40 years. Since then, she has become a ferocious and ardent interpreter and creator of experimental classical (and non-classical) music in the United States and Europe.
In the modern classical genre, Daisy regularly performs as a soloist with Vienna-based ensembles Klangforum Wien and Phace, and with them has sung the work of composers Bernard Lang, Martin Smolka, Rebecca Saunders, and Fausto Romitelli at the Wiener Konzerthaus and the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.
In the world of nightlife and pop music, for several years Daisy served as the lead backing singer/dancer for the band Chromeo. On Broadway, she originated the Horned Goddess role in The Devouring, where she sang her feminine-vibes arrangement of Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer” every night. At Brooklyn’s noted and notorious House of Yes, Daisy has served as singer-in-residence, and regularly collaborates with its truly astounding in-house aerialists, dancers, and circus performers, composing, improvising, and performing works which embody virtuosity, ecstasy, holiness, humor, and necessary stings of irreverence.
On her own, over the last 20 years, Daisy has become a specialist in the music of 12th-century mystic and polymath Hildegard of Bingen. Not a traditionalist, Press incorporates elements of North Indian (Hindustani) ragas into her unusual and extraordinary interpretations of the original Medieval chants.
In our conversation, we looked at the path of Daisy's creativity - from discovering Hildegard to releasing this stunning new album of her works. The non-linearity of the path stands out, as does Daisy's insistence on leaning into what feels good, what she WANTS to work on in the moment. What would it be like for YOU to make your creative and artistic choices in this way?

Asher began classical violin training at the tender age of 2 and had already performed with the Buffalo philharmonic by age 13.
Asher’s expertise in improvisation across multiple genres has led him to a career as a soloist in demand, performing at venues such as Madison Square Garden, Hammerstein Hall, Lincoln Center, the Carnegie Hall and across four continents. Asher has also been featured on PBS, and has made headlines on CNN, WABC, NBC, and the New York Post among many other major news sources. He has been booked to perform at special events for Google, Nickelodeon, TNT, National Geographic, Citigroup and a list of notables including George W. Bush, Ivana Trump and many others.
In 2014 Asher lived a musician’s nightmare when he lost the strength to play his violin for a number of years. Refusing to accept conventional advice he found a way to heal, building his strength to an unprecedented level. He used this experience as fuel to reinvent his live concerts as a high-energy contemporary violinist. In only a few months, Asher learned to merge popular tunes and breakdancing choreography into his performances.
Asher also uniquely performs as a DJ violinist bringing his experience as a live performer and technical prowess as an audio editing and mixing guru to countless clubs and stages.
Asher has been privileged to teach children and adolescents from under resourced neighborhoods in the Bronx for almost 4 years. This has fostered his drive to make a positive impact on others.
With a growing fan base, Asher is working to influence societal norms and conventional thinking about musical performance, helping to break down social and physical barriers for his fans and beyond.
If you are a classical musician who maybe leans a little bit more pop or electronic than your colleagues? If you are someone who is never quite satisfied JUST playing in the middle of the orchestra, but who also wants to CREATE your own sounds, your own compositions, your own stye of audience interaction?? I want you to listen to the way Asher has made a career around figuring out what people want, and how to give it to them in a way that is his very own. The money is all well and good, but he’s found ways to show up with his skills and talents and make music and sound and art that fits within his own artistic integrity and still SELLS. That’s really what we’re all looking for, right?
Ashley Ertz is an oboist and arts administrator in the Chicago metropolitan area. Ertz is the Artistic Director and Founder of 5th Wave Collective and the Program Manager with the International Music Foundation. She also recently won the position of English Horn with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and is on the Board of Directors for the Musicians Club of Women in addition to a healthy freelance career.
In March of 2018 Ashley saw a lack of performance space for womxn composers and thus started 5th Wave Collective, a Chicago based ensemble dedicated to the performance and promotion of music by womxn and gender non-conforming composers. They are now finishing off their fourth season with Ertz as Artistic Director, having had over 200 musicians perform with them and presenting over 100 womxn and gender non-conforming composers.
This is so sorely needed. In the orchestral world our attempts to feature female composers look like a tone poem here, a concerto there - but rarely a symphony, never a full concert. Big orchestras are stuck playing the classics that they assume the audience wants, and they don’t have the time or the social capital to research and program a wider diversity of works. Or so they would have you believe. But Ashley's research and advocacy are pointing the way forward. Look at her website, where HUNDREDS of works by women are documented. Look at the performances she’s created. She’s not stopping. Nor should she. I know you will love hearing from this brilliant and energetic woman.

Carolyn Nussbaum owns The Carolyn Nussbaum Music Company. Founded in Dallas, Texas in 1996 as a one-woman repair shop, today, her internationally-established retail, repair, and distribution center supplies flutists with nearly everything they'll need in their musical life - whether it be instruments, music, direction, or knowledge.
These two women are passionate about collaboration, about working together for the good of the MUSICAL COMMUNITY, and about training band directors and local teachers in the basics of instrument repair so that woodwind players at LOCAL levels can be supported and thriving.

In today’s podcast you’ll hear my interview with James Daly: Pianist, Composer, Teacher, Business Owner. He’s created the San Ramon Academy of Music and the Powerful Piano brand. James is so charming and passionate, and you can just feel his love for the music he makes and the students he teaches. He’s overcome a lot of obstacles to get where he is now, owning a successful teaching business and continuing to perform, compose, and create content with energy and love. Let’s just say it: Classical music is elitist. The people on our orchestra stages tend to look a certain way, the composers who get played tend to be demographically similar, and our diversity/equity/inclusion efforts often get a surprising amount of internal and external pushback. As a white woman, It makes me really uncomfortable to talk about these issues, but these are conversations that need to be had.
The bio my guest James Daly shared with me addresses this head-on, and starts: James is not what people think of when they picture a 'classical pianist'. Being an African American man with full sleeve tattoos and a visible athletic background he is mistaken for a personal trainer more than anything else. But definitely never an artist. How can a meathead be a Chopin aficionado??
James has been a lifelong musician, but his circumstances and background put him in a position similar to many other youths. Before turning 17 he was a high school dropout, working full time, and living on his own. Yet, it was a dedication to music that inspired him to pursue higher education to fulfill his potential. Despite the odds, he achieved a full scholarship to UC Berkeley where he specialized in piano performance and composition. From there he graduated with honors in 2012 and has been teaching the last decade. His unique approach to instruction gained him such success he opened San Ramon Academy of Music in 2018, focusing on online music education and group classes. He started the Powerful Piano brand in 2021 to grow his educational platform and provide access to music education to anyone, not just those who can afford private instruction.
I loved this conversation with James. He’s so charming and passionate that it’s obvious why he’s been successful - and at the same time it’s inspiring that he’s overcome so many obstacles and is now trying to clear the way for others to do the same.

This week on the podcast, you’ll hear Kirin McElwain, cellist, performer, and coordination enthusiast. You'll hear the story of a musician who has the courage to try new things, over and over, and the courage to STOP the things that aren’t working for her.
Kirin McElwain is a performer-composer on cello and voice and—more recently— laptop and modular synthesizer. Equally at home in concert halls, recording studios, and in DIY venues, Kirin has contributed sounds to numerous film and television scores, contemporary dance performances, mixed media installations, and traditional classical and contemporary classical performances.
In her own sound practice, she explores the tension between form and chaos, western classical harmony and noise, and ideas of “goodness” and “correctness” in musical style.
Currently she is an Alexander Technique practitioner who works with musicians both one on one and through her digital membership, Feel Better Sound Better.
What I admire so much about Kirin is the RELENTLESSNESS with which she approaches her creative and business life. She's not afraid to look at what is and isn't working, she's not afraid to ask herself what she needs and what she wants, and she's not afraid to make it happen. We could all take inspiration from this!
My takeaways from Kirin's conversation:
- When you find something that works for you, lean into it
- Be flexible in how people want to work with you. If you can make it easy, they'll come!
- Always be aware of what you want to do and what you don't want to do
- The scarcity mentality of just being grateful for what you have is NOT moving you forward
- Maintain your standards for yourself
- Imagine the best possible outcome - and figure out how to handle all of that success in advance
- Trust yourself to know what you need and figure out how to get it

- Having a portfolio career gives you stability and abundance
- You are more than your instrument. You have value!
- The thing that is easy for you is hard for someone else.
- Create structure - make time to create the plan and then run the plan
- Get help. Find someone qualified, and get help. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel!
- Just start. Action begets action

Why does this matter to classical musicians? Well for one, when you work for a nonprofit (which is nearly every orchestra), how they're doing financially directly affects your income. So it matters a lot. Here are some key points from the chat:
- How to know if the orchestra you're working for (or want to work for) is at risk financially - which could lead to strikes and lockouts as the worse case scenario (or pay cuts and pay freezes in the meantime) - The one question every orchestra should be asking themselves in order to get to the root of the problems, financial or otherwise - How to know if an orchestra's management is failing (and what to do about it) - The significance of an orchestra's mission statement and why should it matter to you - How to declare yourself a catalyst for change in your own orchestra if it really matters to you. On today's episode I interviewed Jessie Montgomery, violinist of the Catalyst Quartet and composer. We talked about her unique career as a composer, member of a string quartet, and all that she has done to design her unique career as a chamber musician and composer in New York City. It was fascinating to hear about her early influences- a child of artists, she was bound to have a career that was outside the box. It is interesting to hear about her influences and the teaching she was exposed to throughout her education that helped mold and shape the career she has created now. On today's Fireside Chat we discussed inner workings of the orchestra. After a discussion with Eileen about how I really didn't know much about how an orchestra business is run (yeah, it's still a business!) and admitting that what I know NOW is vastly more than I knew going into this business, we discussed what it means to take responsibility for what it is and what it isn't, and what musicians can DO if there are things they see that they don't like in the day to day orchestra business doings. I'd say from a musician perspective, the overarching attitude is *shrug* "there's not a lot I can do!"... a sort of "I just work here" attitude. Which can feel frustrating for musicians at times. So what CAN musicians do? This is what we talked about today.
Everyone knows that classical musicians can have trouble from time to time with money... on today's episode I talked with Jeremiah Johnson, who on his own path to becoming a professional musician ran into money problems and student loan debt. At a certain point he decided to step up and learn how to get it fixed... and simultaneously discovered a real need for money talk among his fellow musicians. This ended up becoming a big part of his career. It was a great talk money with Jeremiah and it's high time all musicians start paying attention to this all-important issue that everyone has to face!

I've heard of musicians switching their careers to something else pretty often but it's not too common to hear about someone who becomes a comedian. It takes a special talent and skill to be able to be funny on the spot in front of people sitting there waiting to laugh! On this episode Mary tells lots of funny stories about her Klezmer band gigs and what it was like to be on the Conan O'Brien show. Mary mistakenly thought that I spend a lot of time editing- which I don't. These are "real, raw interviews" which means what is said goes on the show! So that led to some hysterical moments. Do you ever wonder how musicians feel when they leave their assumed path to an orchestra job? Sometimes you might think that this could be a bittersweet decision. After all, mostly a classically trained musician will be thinking of a job in an orchestra as the IT thing to do. I asked Peter Seymour about this, bassist and co-founder of the cool, hip group Project Trio, made up of flute, bass, and cello, and I just loved his answer! These three friends who met at music school decided to create their OWN impact on the music world, and boy have they EVER. Josephine Lee has had an extraordinary career. The job that she got conducting a small children's choir nearly 20 years ago in Chicago has become her life's work and passion. She is now the President and Artistic Director of the group that has grown enormously under her guidance. This was a really fun interview for me, getting back in touch with an old friend, and finding out just how much the choir has grown in the last decade with numerous international tours and collaborations with amazing artists. In this interview I talked to Bernhard Scully, horn player of Canadian Brass. We dove into his unique career as the horn player of the renowned group, as well as his orchestral experiences and most recently, his new position as professor of horn at University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. As the conversation unfolded, it was fascinating to see how Bernhard's intentional choices in his career and education led him down the path to his unique and unconventional career.
