Once upon a time a little girl named Lily didn’t know how to recycle.
She threw everything in the trash can. 
One day her mom taught her how to do recycle, but the next day, 
Lily forgot what her mom taught her and kept throwing recycle things in the trash can. 

Her mom was very upset because Lily was not listening to her.
Suddenly, an idea came to mommy’s mind. 

She took a plastic bottle and called Lily to come over.
She was going to show Lily how to turn the plastic bottle into useful things. 
She was going to turn the bottle into some crafts.
She was going to make a doll!

First, mommy asked Lily to draw eyes, a nose and a mouth with crayons on the bottle. 
Next, mommy got a piece of paper. 
She told Lily to cut the paper into some long and thin stripes very carefully, and color them black. 
Then, she wanted Lily to glue the stripes onto the bottle and make clothes, legs and shoes for the doll.
They made a cute girl doll! All done!

Lily finally knew that she should recycle materials that can be turned into some other useful things. They should not be thrown in the trash cans.

Since then, when Lily drank water with plastic bottles, she would remember to throw them in the recycle bin! The end

The knights worried most when Jacqueline walked by the beanstalk.

“Helloooo, Mr. Giant!” she called.
“Shhhh！He might hear,” said a knight.
“He’s nasty,” said another.
“My tummy hurts just thinking about him.”

“But you’ve never climbed up to meet him,” said Jacqueline.
“What if he’s nice?”
“Nuh uh! He’s different, and different means danger.”
“We’ll never know if we don’t go,” the princess insisted.
“Hark, no! We won’t go!”
“Suit yourselves,” said the princess.
Later, when midnight chimed, the princess climbed.
And at the top…

“Ahhhh! Human! Different! Danger!”
“Me? Dangerous? I’m the size of your toenail!”
“True,” said the giant, “but your kingdom is dangerous!”
“You’ve never climbed down to meet us.
We’re actually quite nice,” said the princess.
“You’ll never know if you don’t go!”

“My tummy hurts just thinking about it,” said the giant.
“But it does get lonely up here.”
“Then take a deep breath,” said the princess.
“We’ll climb down together.”

And so they did – one step at a time.
“Helloooo, royal knights,” Jacqueline called as the kingdom came closer.

“Shields up! Protect the princess! Wait! Where is the princess?”
“I’m up here, and there’s nothing to fear!”
But at the bottom…

“Ahhhh! Knights! Swords! Poking!”
“Ahhhh! Giant! Stepping! Squashing!”

“Wait!” said the princess.
“No one’s going to poke or squash anyone!”
“Maybe you’re right…” said the knights.
“Shields down.”
“I guess…” said the giant.
“Feet down.”

Feeling less worried took some time, but then the whole kingdom started to climb!
Soon everyone learned that different wasn’t dangerous. 
It was delightful!

And forever after, the princess never missed a thing.
In fact, she had the best view of all!

Amy knew that many of her classmates’ families were from different countries around the world.
They had many special traditions, spoke many different languages and ate many different types of foods.

Amy had a brilliant idea for a fundraiser!
She suggested that every student could bring in their favorite dish and hold an ethnic dinner night.
She knew parents and members of the community would be glad to pay money in order to try foods from all over the world!

“That’s a great idea,” Amy’s teacher said.

“Let’s call it ‘Dinner around the World’.”

Amy brought in her favorite meal, chicken with mashed potatoes.
Her friend Amina was from Ethiopia, an African country.
She brought in stewed meat with spices over rice pilaf with Ethiopian bread.
Ibrahim, from Morocco, brought a dish of spiced grilled lamb over white rice with fried eggplant and hummus with pita bread.

The fundraiser was a great success.
Everyone enjoyed seeing smelling and tasting foods from so many different cultures.

We live in a world that prizes education.
But most people think of education only in terms of formal classes.
On a personal level, learning can be fun.

It can deepen your conversations by giving you something to talk about.
And it’s good for your brain.

Hobbies that require thought can help you keep your mental abilities as you age.

Just as exercise makes your muscles stronger, your mind becomes sharper when you use it.

So how do you become a lifelong learner?
It starts with making a choice to do so.
You need to be determined to keep making the effort to lean when it isn’t easy.

Try finding time to learn throughout your day.
Carry a book with you, and read when you have to wait.
Audiobooks and podcasts are also helpful resources.

You can listen to them while traveling or doing chores.
Finding ways to use what you learn can help you remember things.
If you’re learning a language, find someone who speaks that language and talk to them.

Maybe you can help that person be a lifelong learner, too!
Remember, never stop discovering new things about the world around you.

Do you know that doing nothing is hard?
We always hear people say stuff like, 
“Ah.. I wish I could just go home and do nothing all day long.” 

But, have you actually considered how difficult doing nothing could be?
Okay, let me tell you what doing nothing from my perspective means.
I would wake up in the morning open my eyes, I would remember that today I couldn’t do nothing. 

So instead of getting up and eating breakfast, I just lay there in my bed and think about food.
I can’t eat breakfast because eating breakfast is doing something.
So, I just lay there trying to forget about food.  
It’s so hard though.

I could see my candy bag on my table.
It is filled with delicious candy.
But I need to stop.
I can’t think, remember?
I can’t do anything today.
Ah..

And that coca cola bottle in the fridge is calling me.
I could hear it say, “Ellie… I’m here waiting for you.”
I just can’t.
It’s so hard just sit there and do nothing.

It’s okay.
I don’t need to go to school or do my homework.
But food?
I need food.

Gingerbread Man – read by Ellie

Last December, my class had heard stories about runaway gingerbread men for a whole week. I didn’t believe a word of it.

I said, “They can’t run for real.”
I hope you’re right, my teacher said.
We were going to bake our cookies that day.

That afternoon, my friends and I poured in the flour, sugar, and some dark sticky stuff called molasses and mixed it all together until we made dough even though my arms got tired.

I rolled it flat and cut it in the shape of a gingerbread man.
I gave him raisins for eyes, a cinnamon drop for a mouth, and chocolate chips for buttons.

Then I put the gingerbread man in the oven to bake.
When I opened the oven door, the gingerbread man jumped up and ran out the door shouting, “Don’t eat me!” 

I chased him through the school, down passed the 7-11, and through Linkou outlets mall until I cornered him. It began to rain.
Heavy typhoon like rain.

A bird chirped over to the gingerbread man and said, “jump on my tail, I’ll cover you in my nest.”
So the gingerbread mand jumped on.

Halfway up to the nest, the bird chirped, “You are too heavy for my tail, jump on my back.”
So the gingerbread man jumped on the bird’s back.

Soon, the bird said, “You’re too heavy for my back, jump onto my beak.”
So, the gingerbread man jumped on the bird’s beak.

But as soon as they reached the nest, the bird flipped the gingerbread man into the air, snapped his mouth shut, and ate the gingerbread man.
And that was the end of the gingerbread man.
Maybe he shouldn’t have run out of my oven.

Once upon a time a girl named Goldilocks lived in a house at the edge of the woods. In those days curls of hair were called "locks." She was "Goldilocks" because golden hair ran down her head and shoulders.  
One morning Goldilocks was out for a walk when she came across a beautiful bird. She followed that bird right into the woods, where her mother had said many times she must never go. But Goldilocks didn’t think of that.
Deeper and deeper into the woods she went. But where was the bird? It was nowhere to be seen. Goldilocks looked around. That's when she knew she was lost.  
But a house was not far away. “I wonder who lives there,” she thought, "so deep into the woods." She went up and knocked on the door. No answer. She knocked again. Still no answer. Goldilocks knocked a third time and the door opened. But no one was behind the door.  
“Well, the door is already open,” said the girl. “So I may as well go in.”


Goldilocks smelled a wonderful smell, and soon knew why. On the table were three steaming bowls of oatmeal. All of a sudden she realized how very hungry she was.


What Goldilocks did not know, however, is that three bears lived in this house. In fact, that very morning the three bears had sat down to their bowls of oatmeal but the cereal was too hot. So they had decided to take a short walk. They said to each other, "By the time we return home our oatmeal will be perfect."


Gazing at the steaming bowls of oatmeal, Goldilocks thought, “I'm sure whoever lives here won’t mind if I take just one sip.” She sat at the first chair and took a sip. “Ah!” she said, “it is too hot.”
She moved to the next bowl and took a sip. “Ah!” she said, “it is too cold.”


She moved to the third bowl and took a sip. “It is just right!” And before she knew it, the oatmeal was all gone.  
Goldilocks rubbed her tummy. “I'm full! I must find somewhere to sit that's more comfortable.”  
She went to the living room. Three chairs were lined up in a row – one big chair, one medium-sized chair, and a wee little chair.


“I'm sure whoever lives here will not mind if I sit on just one chair,” said Goldilocks. She sat on the big chair, but it was too hard. 
“The next chair looks good,” said Goldilocks. She moved to the medium-sized chair, but it was too soft.
“The wee little chair looks better,” said the girl. She sat on the little chair and it was just right! But when Goldilocks leaned back a bit, the chair broke into a dozen pieces. She plopped right on the floor.
“Oh, no!” Goldilocks wailed. Then she yawned. There must be somewhere she could lie down for a short nap.

The girl saw a ladder and climbed it to an attic. In a row, three beds were lined up – one big bed, one medium-sized bed, and a wee little bed.  
“I'm sure whoever lives here won’t mind if I lay down for just a short nap,” she said. She laid down on the big bed but it was too hard. She laid down on the medium-sized bed but it was too soft. The girl laid down on the wee little bed, and it was just right! As her head hit the pillow, Goldilocks was fast asleep.
Just then, the three bears came home from their walk. "Oh, my!" said Mama Bear. “Did either of you leave the front door open?” 


“Not I,” said Papa Bear. 
"Not I," said Little Bear.
Slowly the three bears stepped inside and looked around.   
“Most odd!” said Papa Bear, seeing his spoon in his bowl. “Someone has been eating my oatmeal!”
“Most odd indeed!” said Mama Bear, also seeing her spoon in her bowl. “Someone has been eating my oatmeal!”
“This is the most odd of all!” said Little Bear. “Someone has been eating my oatmeal and they ate it all up!”


The three bears were very surprised, as you can imagine. With care, they stepped into their living room.
“Do you think someone was sitting in my chair?” said Papa Bear.


“I know someone was sitting in my chair,” said Mama Bear, “because I can see the seat cushion is pushed down.”
“And I know someone was sitting in my chair!” said Little Bear. “Because it’s all broken!”


The three bears were even more surprised at that! They climbed the ladder to their attic.  
“Someone has been sleeping on my bed,” said Papa Bear, who could see that his blankets were moved.
“Someone has been sleeping on my bed, too,” said Mama Bear, who could also see that her blankets were moved.
“Someone has been sleeping on my bed,” said Little Bear. “And look - she is still there!”
Goldilocks bolted awake. Three bears were looming over her, and they did not look happy.


“Oh my!” said Goldilocks, jumping out of bed. As quick as she could, she climbed down the ladder and ran out the front door.
Little Bear chased after her. "Wait, please!"
Goldilocks stopped and turned around. 
"Tell me," said Little Bear, “Why did you come inside our house?”



“I guess I didn’t think–,“ said Goldilocks. 
“And why did you eat my oatmeal?” said Little Bear.
“Well I guess I didn’t think–,“ said Goldilocks.
“And why did you break my chair and sleep in my bed?” said Little Bear.
“Well I guess I didn’t think about that, either,” said Goldilocks.
They were silent.
Goldilocks said, “I suppose I could have waited outside your door.”
“We were coming right home,” said Mama Bear. "We might have invited you in if we knew you were hungry."



“I’m sorry about the chair,” said Goldilocks. “I guess you saw it broke.”
"Yep," said Mama Bear with a frown.
“I’m good at fixing things,” said Goldilocks, “If you have glue.”
“Of course we have glue!” said Papa Bear. “What kind of bears do you think we are?”


“I will make it up to you!” said Goldilocks. 
“Come on in then, dear,” said Mama Bear. 
“We'll start over,” said Papa Bear with a nod.
“Come in, come in!” said Little Bear, jumping up and down.  
With smiles, they skipped together inside the Bear’s house.

Boys and girls, do you think Goldilocks has made a mistake?
Remember what she did?
She forgot what her mom told her not to get into the forest.
She went into the house that there was nobody inside.
She ate the oatmeal, she broke the chair, and she slept in the bed.
But, the bears are so kind. They forgive Goldilocks so easily.

And this is Jack, the daddy, who likes to eat raw honey and comb with slices of tart, green apple. Delicious!
This is the beeswax, made into candles, that are scented with honey that is collected from the hive that stands in the yard.
And this is the mommy, who lights the candles, then says a prayer of thanks.
This is the cough syrup, made with golden honey,
that comes from the hive in a box that stands in the yard.
And this is Jack, the daddy, who spoons the medicine,
so his child will sleep better.
This is the yogurt, mixed with honey, that comes from the bee box that stands in the yard.
And this is the grandma, who offers her grandchildren sweet honey yogurt for breakfast.
Here is the whole family, thankful to the bees, for the candles… 
for the golden honey…
for the cough syrup…
for the beeswax…
and for the pollinating the flowers!

Rabbit works.

Young Mikey Yam danced to his front door.
“Mom, do you know I’m about to turn FOUR?”
“All of my friends will come over and play, then come over and play, then piles of presents will fill our driveway.”
“We’ll have a huge cake and buddies will say, ‘Your party was perfect. Hip, hip, hooray!’”
Mikey’s mom smiled as he finished his speech.
“Your plan is fantastic, my sweet little peach, but no celebration is ever complete, until you’ve decided what you want to EAT!!”
Her statement stopped him dead in his tracks.
“Food! Of course! Every party needs snacks.”
“Well, pizza is something that everyone loves, but tacos fit in your hand like a glove.
Burgers and hot dogs are easy to eat, but port and fried rice is such a nice treat.”
He needed a guru – a trusted grub guide.
“Maybe my grannies can help me decide!”
“What food did you have for your birthday, Bahboo?”
“In Hong Kong, Chinese food is all that we knew.”
“Nonna, do you know what food you would choose?”
“My roots are Italian, so pasta can’t lose!”
Chinese or Italian? Both are delicious.
He remembered his cousins’ birthday dishes.
For the twins, rice and spice on their special day,
While Joe had lasagna.
He ate a whole tray!
Mikey was stuck – not sure what to do.
He couldn’t decide between the two.
Ravioli or Dumplings?
Linguine or Lo Mein?
All of these options were hurting his brain.
Facaccia, burrata, caprese, risotto.
Dim sum or wontons or noodles and shrimp roe.

His mind was a jumble of possible choices.
He heard both sides of his family’s voices.
He rushed to the park to get out of his head.
His best friend, Sophia, found him and said, 
“Are you ok, Mikey? Why so much sorrow?”
“I can’t pick a dish and my party’s tomorrow.”
“Your mom is Italian, your dad is Chinese – you’re free to choose food as unique as you please. Why not have both? Is that too outrageous? A Chinese-Italian mash-up for the ages!”
“Sophia, that’s it! I don’t have to choose one!”
He bolted straight home. There was lots to get done!
Mickey burst in the kitchen.
“I’m ready to pick! I’ve made my decision – this isn’t a trick.
I want Friend Rice And Marinara sauce!”
“That’ll be different but hey, you’re the boss!”

He awoke the next day in a jittery mood.
Friends were arriving.
“Will they like the food?”
Mikey’s mom fried up a wok-full of rice; In went the veggies, two eggs and some spice.
His friends helped give the tomatoes a squish.
They drizzled the sauce to complete the new dish.
Mikey tensed up as his friends a taste, but the fusion of flavors lit up every face!
Despite any doubts, the meal couldn’t be beat.
The fried rice was savory, the marinara sweet.
It tasted more scrumptious than they thought it could.
The whole party shouted out,
“Different is good!”

At recess, I got yelled at for kicking the fence.
At lunch, they ran out of my favorite pizza, so I didn’t eat.
And on the bus home, the driver missed my stop,
So I had to walk all the way back in the rain.
Now I’m hungry, cold, and wet. Grrrrrrrrrr!

“Shhhhhh,” says Mama as soon as I opened the door.
“Benji’s playing in his box.”
When Benji’s in his box, it’s because he’s had a bad day at preschool.
When Benji’s had a bad day, we tiptoe and speak softly.
When I’ve had a bad day, no one tiptoes or speaks softly.
Benji, Mama, and I made that box last summer.
Mama cut the window flaps, and Benji and I splashed on the paint.
Inside, it’s cozy and safe, but only big enough for Benji and his blue blanket.
I sure wish I had a box for days like this.
Benji wiggles his fingers at me.
“Hi, Benji,” I say softly.
Benji’s face appears.
“Wet Sammy,” Benji says.

“Samuel!” Says Mama.
“There’s water all over the floor! Take your shoes off this instant.”
It’s not my fault I had to walk all that way in the rain.
Benji’s block city is spread all around.
Watch your step!”Mama says.
Benji’s been working hard on that.”
“I know. I helped!” I start to say- but Mama’s phone rings. And she turns away.
I stick my tongue out at the box.
I do my best karate kick high in the air, above Benji’s block city.
“Ka-Cha!”
I’ve always wanted to learn karate.
Mama says I can’t right now because the classes are on Tuesdays, and that’s when we have to visit the Super-Happy Lady at Benji’s clinic downtown.

“Let’s bounce the ball!”
Super-Happy Lady likes to say. But Benji never does.
“Let’s play a game!” But Benji never plays.
Meanwhile, I’m told to sit in the waiting room and not bother anyone.

On Super-Happy Lady days, we always get back home tired.
So Mama will make berry smoothies to help us feel better.
The she’ll wrap Benji tight in his big blue blanket, just how he likes, and tell him,
“You’re my little burrito!”
But today there are no berry smoothies and no burritos.
Today Mama is busy and Benji is hiding.
This day is just plain old rotten.

Thump! goes the box.
It’s Benji, kicking around in there.
“Hey!” I say. 
“Come out and I’ll teach you karate!” But he doesn’t.
So I go to the kitchen and pour some cereal.
But when I add the milk, too much gushes out.
I am grumpy, hungry, and cold, and now there is milk everywhere!
I have had it with this fence-kicking, rain-dripping, milk-splling day.
I cry mad-sad shivery tears.
No one notices.
Ka-thunk! Benji’s coming out!
He holds his blanket up high and tiptoes through the block city.
Benji spreads his blanket flat on the floor.
What’s he doing?
He pulls me down on the fuzzy blueness and makes me lie straight and still.
Then he rolls me over and over.
He works hard to wrap me up tight.
Benji leans over me.
His forehead clunks my forehead.
His eyes look right in my eyes.
“You’re my little burrito,” he says.

I open the blanket and let Benji in.
“You’re my little brother!” I day.
And that’s how Mama finds us.
“Can I come in too?” she askes.
Whenever the day is good or bad, Benji and I will be okay.
That’s because the two of us are brothers.
Side by side is where we are, and how we’ll always be!

I fill the watering can with water.
“It is too heavy to carry,” I said.
“Dad will be home soon. You can ask him for help,” said Mom.
“There’s a hole in the watering can! I am getting wet!” I shouted.
“We can use the hose instead,” said Mom.
“Do you need some help” asked Dad.
“dad, you came just in time!” I said.
“Let’s plant the seeds together,” said Dad.

小朋友，你知道端午節的由來嗎？戰國時代楚國有一個愛國詩人屈原，他跟楚國國王說，秦國很強大，會來攻打楚國，當時很多大臣嫉妒屈原，在楚王面前說屈原的壞話，楚王開始不相信屈原，而且把屈原放逐邊疆。後來，秦國真的攻打楚國，楚王被關在秦國的地牢，三年後死在秦國地牢中。屈原聽到消息感到很傷心，並投江自殺。人們為了打撈屈原的身體，丟了很多食物進江中，希望魚蝦不要吃屈原的身體。後來演變成，端午節的時候，人們會包粽子、划龍舟了。

Do you know how did the Dragon Boat Festival came about? Let me tell you more about the legend.
Long long time ago, there was a great poet named Qu Yuan. 
He was born in a ruling family in Kingdom Chu. 
Qu Yuan became the number one councilor and minister of the kingdom.
During the warring States, Qu Yuan warned King Chu about the threats from Kingdom Qin.
However, King Chu ignored Qu Yuan and some of the officials were jealous.
They took the opportunity to dismiss and exile Qu Yuan.
Qu Yuan helplessly watched his motherland decline in the hands of corrupted statesmen.
Soon enough, Kingdom Chu was defeated by Kingdom Qin.
King Chu was caught and sent into dungeon by King Qin.
Three years later, King Chu passed away in the kingdom of Qin.
Upon hearing Kingdom Chu’s defeat and King Chu’s death, Qu Yuan was driven to great despair.
On the fifth day of the fifth month, he committed suicide in the Miluo River.
The locals rushed out to the river in boats to find Qu Yuan’s body.
They threw stuffed rice in bamboo stems and eggs into the river to prevent the “Dragon” in the river and other fishes from eating Qu Yuan’s body.
A Chinese doctor poured realgar wine into the river to poison the dragon.
Eventually, a drugged dragon floated on the surface of the river.
Remains of Qu Yuan’s clothes could be seen on the dragon.
The locals eventually captured and killed the dragon.
Ever since, a tradition is formed.
Locals will race their boats , eat rice dumplings and drink realgar wine on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month in commemoration of the great poet, Qu Yuan.

Do you know why we wrap Zongzi (rice dumpling)? It’s to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
Do you know why we eat Zongzi for the Dragon Boat Festival? There are lots of stories and legends about it. Today, I’ll tell you the most famous one.

Long long time ago, there was a famous patriotic poet Qu Yuan.
He was born into the nobility of Chu State during the Warring States Period.
Qu Yuan dedicated his whole life to assisting the King to make the Chu stronger, so he became the number one minister of Chu at that time.
One of his key ideas was to unite the equally powerful Qi State to resist the most powerful Qin qt the time. 
However, as a group of nobles were very jealous of Qu Yuan, they often spoke ill of him in front of the King.
Finally, Qu Yuan was driven out of the capital of exiled to remote areas.
During his exile, he wrote a lot of poems to show his love towards his country.
Some of which are still very famous in China.
In 278 B.C., the capital of Chu was broken through by the Qin army.
After hearing it, Qu Yuan was very sad and angry.
On the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, he threw himself into the Miluo River and died for his country.
After hearing the sad news, the people of Chu mourned and went to the Miluo River.
Fishermen rowed their boats and tried to salveage his body from the river.
They threw rice balls, eggs, and other food into the river, hoping that the fish, shrimps, and crabs would eat the food and wouldn’t bite Qu Yuan’s body.
An old physician poured a jar of realgar wine into the river to stun the dragon.
But unfortunately, people did not find Qu Yuan’s body.
To send their condolences, people swung their boats above the river.
Later, it developed into dragon boat racing.
People came up with the idea of wrapping rice with bamboo leaves and tying them up with colored tread, which later developed into zongzi.
On the fifth day of the fifth the lunar month of each year, there is the custom of dragon boat racing, eating zongzi and drinking realgar wine.
People do these activities to commemorate the patriotic poet Qu Yuan.

As the season turned, the forest was dressed in new colors of rich amber, burned orange, and chestnut brown.
Little Red the fox was happy, because now it would be much easier to hide.
A fox would be hard to spy among the dried brown leaves, burgundy bushes, and coppery grasses.
Only in the open meadow would Hazel the dormouse be able to catch sight of Little Red.
Little Red and Hazel spent hours and hours playing hide-and-seek together.
The two friends loved jumping and rolling in the crisp dried leaves.
They loved the rustling sound.
“The leaves are laughing with us,” said Hazel joyfully.
During these moments of happiness, the cold air hinted of the coming winter.
Little Red felt a tinge of sadness.
For Red, the smell of winter meant one thing: loneliness.
Soon, Little Red’s very best friend in the world would settle down in a warm burrow to hibernate.
“Hazel, perhaps this season, you will sleep less,” said Little Red hopefully, trying to sound cheerful.
“Little Red, I am no fox, I am a dormouse. I’d like to stay awake and keep you company, but you know, in the end, I must always sleep.”
So, Little Red started to think of ways to keep Hazel from falling asleep.
What if I could make the sun stay high?
Then winter would not be so cold?
What if I could ask the forest to hold its fruit?
Then there would be food all winter long.
What if I tickled Hazel to stay awake?
Then we could play and play.
The dormouse started to yawn.
“Hazel, I want us to stay together forever,” pleaded the friend.
“Little Red, I promise, when the winter gives way to spring, I will be here for you, and we will play again.”
“I know, Hazel, but before you sleep, may I tell you a story?”
“Why…yes, ahh… as long as it is short,” replied Hazel sleepily, with head nodding and eyes closing.
So Little Red curled up on the forest floor and Hazel nestled into the soft warm tail to listen.
But, before a word of the story was spoken… 
The two friends had fallen fast asleep, together.

It is the perfect day for my yellow umbrella.

My yellow umbrella is big and bright and covers me in hope and warmth.
It is a bubble aloft, finding its true shape.
I step inside my yellow umbrella and float away, like a daydream drifting down a windy river.
Then I soar high above the clouds with my yellow umbrella, my feet never touching the ground. 
My yellow umbrella is the perfect color.
It’s not too big like the big blue sky.
Or too prickly like a thorny red rose.
It’s not too furry like a big, brown bear.
Or too itchy like the green, green grass.
It is the color of a crayon so bright, it fills my mind with daffodils and canaries.
As the perfect day for my yellow umbrella comes to an end, I tuck it in and put it to bed for the night.
I sleep, sleep, sleep.
I dream of all of life’s possibilities.
Laughter awakens me.
It’s morning.
I open my heart. 
I open my mind.

< Picky Eater >
“Tuna salad? Yuck!”
“Lucas, you’re a picky eater,” Dad laughs.
He makes my lunch for school.
But I don’t always like what he puts in my lunch box.

Today we’re going to the supermarket.
I’ll pick out food for tomorrow’s lunch.
“Choose anything, as long as it’s healthful,” Dad says.

Food is made of nutrients.
Our bodies use nutrients to stay healthy.
Vitamins and minerals are nutrients.
So are proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.

Dad says eating well keeps us healthy.
Good food gives our bodies energy.
Energy is the power to move or grow.
It helps us learn and play.

Your body needs water too.
It keeps your muscles and mind working right.
Did you know you can get water from food?
Just bite into a juicy fruit or vegetable.

< Five Food Groups >
“We’ll look for the five food groups,” Dad says.
I pick turkey from the protein group.
This group helps build strong bones and muscles.
The dairy group keeps bones strong too.
Cheese, please!

Each group includes many foods. 
Meat, beans, eggs, and nuts are all part of the protein group.
Milk and yogurt are in the dairy group.

Popcorn is my favorite snack.
It’s part of the grain group.
Some grains make oatmeal and pasta.
Other grains go into breads and breakfast cereals.

Dad gets spinach from the vegetable group.
Peas, carrots, and tomatoes are also vegetables.
So are kale and celery.

A grain is the seed of a plant.
Whole grain foods use all the seed.
They can help keep our hearts healthy.

Now for something sweet. Cookies!
“Sugar foods taste good,” Dad says.
“But eating them takes our energy away.
Raisins make a healthier treat.
They’re from the fruit group. 
And they’re full of energy.”

The fruit group has lots of sweet treats.
Have berries or a melon.
Eat an apple or an orange.

< Energy Lunch >
“I need a snack,” I tell Dad.
I’m so hungry, I could even eat tuna salad!

“First, let’s make your school lunch,” Dad says.
He washes the spinach.
I get slices of turkey and cheese.
We roll up everything in a whole grain tortilla.

The US government has tips for planning healthy meals.
The plan is called MyPlate.
Protein and grains make up half the meal.
Fruit and vegetables make up the other half.
A cup of low-fat milk goes on the side.

For dessert, we make a crunchy treat.
I put popcorn and raisins in a bag.
Dad adds almonds for extra crunch.

Breakfast is also a big-deal meal.
It wakes up your mind and body.
Energy from breakfast food helps you learn better.
It gives you playing power too.

There’s some popcorn left over.
But not for long!

Do you choose good food?
Peel an orange. 
Munch on carrots.
And eat healthy!

Boys and girls, do you know what five food groups are?
They are dairy, fruit, protein, grain, and vegetable.

Can you make an energy lunch?
You’ll need ingredients from the five food groups.
1. Choose something from the protein group.
The protein group includes beans, meat, nuts, and more.
2. Choose something from the dairy group.
The dairy group includes milk, cheese, and more.
3. Choose something from the grain group.
The grain group includes bread, crackers, rice, and more.
4. Choose something from the vegetable group.
The vegetable group includes avocados, carrots, broccoli, and more.
5. Choose something from the fruit group.
The fruit group includes apples, bananas, oranges, and more.
6. Start making your lunch.
You can mix the ingredients into soup or chili.
Or add them to a sandwich.
Don’t forget dessert!
Blended fruit makes a sweet smoothie.

It was morning and the big trucks were ready to work.
“Let’s hoist,” said Crane.
“Let’s push,” said Dozer.
“Let’s dig,” said Digger.
Together they built tall buildings for working.
They built roads for driving and bridges for crossing.
They built and built until the loud whistle blew.
“I’m beat,” said Crane.
“Me too,” said Dozer.
The other big trucks took a break.
But Digger did not.
He had found something in the rubble.
“Hello there,” he said.
The flower was tiny, but it was beautiful.
Every day, while the other big trucks built, Digger visited the flower.
He watered it when its leaves looked dry.
He shielded it on windy days.
And just before he switched off for the night, Digger sang the flower a bedtime song.
The flower grew. But the city grew, too.
Soon, every space had been filled.
Every space but one.
“We need to put a building here,” said Crane.
Dozer started his engine.
Before Digger could stop him…
Dozer blew a big puff of smoke and cut the flower down.
Then the other big trucks went back to work.
But Digger did not.
When the smoke cleared, Digger saw something in the rubble.
“Little seeds,” he said.
He scooped them up and drove.
He drove past the tall buildings.
Past the farthest house on the farthest street.
He drove to a place no big truck had ever been.
There, Digger stopped.
He dug and scooped and tucked the seeds into the warm earth.
Every day, Digger cared for the seeds.
He watered them when their leaves looked dry.
He shielded them on windy days.
And just before he switched off for the night, Digger sang the flowers a bedtime song.

My name is Sam.
This is Bob.
Bob is my dog.
He’s my BFF (Best Furry Friend).

Bob has his own bed, but he prefers mine.
You need a lot of room to roll over when you have a sticky-out tail.
Sometimes Bob likes breakfast in bed.
Sneaking his bowl upstairs can be tricky!

Bob loves to ride the bus to school with me.
I prefer the front seats, but he likes to sit right at the back, which is probably best because… our driver is NOT a dog lover. Aachooo!

My teacher Miss Davies is not crazy about dogs either.
She didn’t like it on “Bring Your Pet to School Day” when Bob… joined in circle time…
…painted up a storm… …or dug in the sandbox. (We almost went to Australia.)

Lots of other people love Bob though.
My friend Nell thinks Bob is much more interesting than her goldfish.
(Nigel just hides behind his pretend cave all day and does really long poops.)

And my baby sister stops crying whenever Bob chases his tail.
Mr. Miller next door says Bob has cute ears and always saves him a bit of sausage.

Bob has lots of other talents too.
He can fetch the paper.
He can find something that has been missing for a really long time…
… and he’s a great ball catcher.
(Unless there’s a squirrel nearby!)

Bob’s favorite time of the day is lunchtime.
Mom says eating vegetables is making me big and strong, but I HATE carrot sticks!
Luckily, Bob is not a fussy eater.

Whenever Mom calls for dinner, Bob is always first to the table.
Dad says that’s because “Four paws are faster than two feet – and there might be cake!”

Bob goes EVERYWHERE with me.
Sometimes we trek deep into the jungle to discover new wildlife.
Bob is good at discovering creatures, but not so good at picking them up.

Sometimes we hide out in our super spy lair. 
Except for Bob’s tail, we are completely undercover.

Sometimes we shoot into outer space.
I’m the rocket pilot.
Bob is the hairy navigator.

Whenever it rains, Bob finds the best muddy puddles!
But that’s okay because he always takes a bath before bed.
He likes to make bubble hats and leave wet paw trails.
We need a lot of towels.

Bob always chooses the same book for our bedtime story.
It’s about a boy and a dog who are brave and daring and have lots of adventures.
It’s the best!
(Although it always seems to be my turn to do the reading, while Bob mostly likes looking at the pictures.)

Nighttime can be tricky. I know I snore, but the drooly patch on the pillow… 
That’s definitely because of Bob.
I should make Bob sleep in his own bed, but he sometimes gets scared of the dark.
It’s fine if my two night-lights, flashlight, and dinosaur lamp are on.

Because of this and the needing-more-room-for-the-tail, he always stays right here.
Goodnight, Bob. Sleep tight.

A little while later, Olga’s friends Rosina, Rosetta, and the big gray Dormitilla arrive.
The clouds are happy to stay together.
I love the fall!
The cloud friends make lots of rain together and have a lot of fun.
Too much rain.
Unfortunately, that’s the way fall is.
