Newsletters have become an essential tool for news outlets to share their stories and engage readers. But coming up with a successful newsletter strategy can be difficult. Recently, Songer and Randi Stevenson, the Express News' executive producer, wrote a report for the Better News initiative about how the Express News streamlined its newsletter process and found a way to funnel more people to its digital site. Reader-supported, hyper-local newsletter thrives in downtown Albuquerque
Way back when, it wasn’t uncommon for small towns to have their own newspapers, filled with the stories and goings-on that mattered to people who lived there. Peter Rice has recreated that concept for the digital age and thinks this is the way more news outlets should operate. “Local news should be like a friend you enjoy catching up with occasionally. It should not be a helicopter parent that won’t leave you alone, which is unfortunately the model ad-supported media have to use,” says Rice, editor of the Downtown Albuquerque News. “Newsletters are a kinder, gentler way to satisfy customers and make money.” Rice started his publication, affectionately called DAN, in the summer of 2019 after being “infuriated or angered at some point” in the early 2000s about the decline of newspapers and “the almost self-immolation of the news business. I couldn’t escape the suspicion that the business was not as hard as the industry was making it look. It was very clear it had to change.” While newspapers went online, keeping their content free and hoping advertisers would come with them, Rice thought there had to be a better way, especially because “the overhead of the news business was about to go way down. Distributing digital media is about 3 percent of the cost of the old model, which literally involved loggers and truckers.” Why not just give people their local news, ask them to pay for it, and kick advertisers to the curb? “If these papers could convert even a third or a half of their subscriber base, which was already in the habit of paying for news, if they could just get them to continue paying for news in a different format, in retrospect we could’ve avoided a lot of the carnage we’ve seen in American newsrooms and all these news deserts that have been so depressing and threatening of self-government in general,” he says. And that’s how DAN started. ‘It’s. ‘It’s basically just a dead-simple business model that I thought they should’ve been using all along. It is the old-fashioned business model, it’s just very low overhead, because the technology takes out the printing and the ink and the distribution cost for the most part. What do you have when you have the old newspaper model with no advertising and no overhead? You’ve got readers paying money for news.” Keep up with the latest news about the It's All Journalism podcast, sign up for our weekly email newsletter. Better News: This pitch to switch to digital even includes softball
The Oklahoman built a reputation as the state's newspaper of record by covering the Oklahoma City community for more than 100 years. However, with several changes in ownership in recent years leading to staff cuts and a decline in print readership, the paper's fortunes have reversed. Better News recently published a report written by The Oklahoman's business editor, David Dishman, on how the legacy newspaper has transformed itself from within and successfully shifted its focus away from print and toward growing its digital audience. Read the Report. Dishman talks to Better News podcast host Michael O'Connell about some of the strategies the paper employed to help a staff steeped in print traditions adopt a digital-first approach. One strategy even included playing softball and kickball to bring reporters together as a team. Better News: Arizona Daily Star flips the narrative with solutions journalism beat
Media critics often fault the news industry for only covering bad news. While William Randolph Hearst may have coined the concept “If it bleeds, it leads,” that sentiment is not shared by those journalists working hard to make the community they’re covering a better place for their audience to live. Case in point, the Arizona Daily Star recently flipped the narrative and added solutions-oriented reporting to its coverage. Rather than reporting on the problems of the community, the Daily Star's solutions reporter Caitlin Schmidt is writing about how people are trying to fix those problems. Caitlin and Editor Jill Jorden Spitz recently wrote a case study for Better News about the Star’s solutions-oriented reporting. Caitlin joins Better News host Michael O’Connell to share the details. Better News: Killing Zombies On Your Subscription List
The Arizona Republic had a zombie problem. We're not talking about the brain-eating variety of zombies. Instead, the Republic had too many digital subscribers that weren't actively engaged with the newspaper's content. These "zombies" were also most likely to cancel their subscriptions, creating a retention problem. In 2019-20, the Republic launched a campaign to turn those zombies into loyalists by creating content with which they would be interested in engaging. John Adams, the Arizona Republic's senior director of storytelling and innovation, and Alia Rau, the paper's former local politics and issues reporter, tell Better News host Michael O'Connell about the Republic's successful efforts in rooting out zombies. Adams and Rau also wrote a report about the effort for the Better News Initiative. The Better News podcast is a partnership between It’s All Journalism and the American Press Institute to a) showcase innovative/experimental ideas that emerge from the Knight-Lenfest Local News Transformation Fund and b) share replicable strategies and tactics that benefit the news industry as a whole. Better News: Is it time to rethink your arts coverage?
KCUR.org, the website for Kansas City's public media station, made a concerted effort from 2014-18 to expand its arts coverage. It even had two-full-time reporters on the arts beat. When one of these reporters switched to another beat, freelancers filled in to make up the gap. Despite all of these efforts, web traffic suggested KCUR readers were not all that interested in the website's arts coverage. Something had to change. The editorial team developed a new strategy that grew audiences and even helped "soccer dads" care about Kansas City's arts scene. Digital editor CJ Janovy wrote about KCUR's new approach to its arts coverage for the American Press Institute's Better News initiative. She also shares her insights on the Better News podcast. Better News: Iconic southern newspaper undergoes digital-first transformation
The News Reporter of Whiteville, North Carolina is one of those iconic southern newspapers. Founded in 1896, the paper has a long history of serving rural Columbus County, including winning a Pulitzer Prize for Meritorious Public Service for its coverage of the Ku Klux Klan in 1953. Les High is the third-generation owner of The News Reporter. His grandfather, Leslie S. Thompson, bought the paper in 1938, and his father took over from him in 1959. Les took over from his father in 1994. Despite The News Reporter's multigenerational family ownership and long history of serving Columbus County, the paper was not immune to the economic forces that have impacted the media industry in recent years. Readership and advertising revenue were in decline. In April 2016, The News Reporter's staff decided it was time to make a significant change. With help of the University of North Carolina's Hussman School of Journalism and Media, they began to transform the twice-weekly print publication into a digital-first newsroom. Marketing Director Jenny Clore wrote about the transformation and the challenges The News Reporter's staff had to face for API's Better News initiative. The Better News podcast is a partnership between It’s All Journalism and the American Press Institute to a) showcase innovative/experimental ideas that emerge from the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative and b) to share replicable strategies and tactics that benefit the news industry as a whole. Better News: Post & Courier uncovers new revenue with mini-publisher model
The Post & Courier of Charleston, South Carolina was in dire straights. Its traditional revenue streams — print advertising and circulation — were in decline and the newspaper needed to find a way to reverse that trend — and fast. The Post & Courier's solution, according to Executive Editor Mitch Pugh, was to take a mini-publisher approach, which mobilized the editorial and sales teams into creating new content products in areas like food, politics and real estate. Over two years, the initiative generated almost $900,000 in new product revenue and increased digital subscriptions by 250 percent. In April, Pugh wrote a report for the American Press Institute's Better News Initiative to share some of the lessons The Post & Courier's staff learned by adopting its mini-publisher model. Read the full report here. The Better News podcast is a partnership between It’s All Journalism and the American Press Institute to a) showcase innovative/experimental ideas that emerge from the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative and b) to share replicable strategies and tactics that benefit the news industry as a whole.
