In 2023, the IMSA GTP class introduced new cars built to the LMDh formula, featuring a hybrid energy management system as manufacturers were keen to show more relevance to the passenger car industry. The competition in the GTP class was intense, with six driver pairings from four manufacturers (Acura, BMW, Cadillac, and Porsche) entering the final race, the Motul Petit Le Mans at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, in contention for the championship. The top three entries were only separated by five points. Ultimately the Cadillac of Britain's Alexander Sims and Pipo Derani was victorious. Despite winning only once during the season (at the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring), their consistent performances and strategy paid off. This victory marked Derani's second IMSA championship and the first for Sims. The Aston Martin Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year Award is motorsport's most prestigious accolade aimed at recognizing and supporting young talent. Established in 1989, the award was created by Autosport Magazine and the British Racing Drivers' Club (BRDC). Its purpose is to identify and assist promising British racing drivers in their progression up the motorsport ladder. Each year young competitors are selected based on their performance in lower-tier racing series. The selection process involves a combination of on-track driving tests and off-track assessments, including fitness and professional skills. Winners of the award have gone on to achieve considerable success in motorsport, including Formula 1. Notable winners include F1 stars such as David Coulthard, Jenson Button, Lando Norris, Paul di Resta and George Russell. Whilst the likes of Anthony Davidson and Jake Dennis have become champions in other series. Max Verstappen secured pole position at the Belgian Grand Prix qualifying session, despite facing a five-place grid penalty for the GP due to the fitting of a fifth gearbox of the season. This penalty, however, does not affect his starting spot for Saturday’s sprint race. Verstappen had a tense exchange with his engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, over Red Bull's run plan, which saw him barely make it through in 10th in Q2 following the switch from wet to dry tyres in that session. In the final runs of Q3, Charles Leclerc initially took the top spot with a time of 1m46.988s. However, Verstappen, running deep in the Q3 pack, secured the fastest time with a 1m46.168s, pushing Leclerc to second place before Verstappen's grid penalty was applied. They begin by discussing potential disruptions due to severe weather conditions. The Department of Civil Protection has issued a red alert weather warning for the Emilia-Romagna region, citing risks of high winds, heavy rain, thunderstorms, and potential landslides. With an estimated rainfall accumulation of around 150mm expected by tomorrow night, concerns about flooding have prompted local authorities to recommend the closure of schools and certain roads. How will this affect the Grand Prix? Roberto Chinchero explains how it will likely go ahead, but the track action will favour teams such as Red Bull, with their higher levels of downforce paying off in slippery conditions. Organisers have implemented contingency plans for wet weather, and the race will see the introduction of a new Pirelli rain tyre that doesn't require preheating. The team also discuss changes to the tyre regulations, which will force drivers to use hard, medium, and soft compounds in the qualifying sessions. The move could lead to more exciting races and reintroduce two-stop strategies. Jonathan Noble explains how the trial aims to balance excitement with practicality. The trial will also reduce tyre allocation from 13 to 11 sets, with a more even split between compounds. This could lead to more aggressive tyre choices and potentially more entertaining races. British racing fans were accustomed to seeing competitive Jaguar Mk2s triumph frequently in British Saloon Car racing in the early 1960s. But on this day sixty years ago, May 11th 1963, the Ford Galaxie arrived to end the British reign at the top. When Jack Sears drove a Galaxie 500 to victory in the 1963 British Saloon Car Championship, it came as a shock to the established order. Protests and arguments ensued as American muscle destroyed the previously dominant Jags. Racing veterans Graham Hill and Sir Jack Brabham also tried their hand at driving these enormous beasts, which would struggle to slow thanks the insufficient brakes, and which were quickly upgraded before the year was out. But the point of these cars wasn't the twisty stuff, it was the enormous about of power from the 7.0 engines and seemingly endless torque. The Lotus Cortinas proved to be too quick for the big Ford V8's as the decade went on, but not before the Galaxie had cemented its place in racing history. In today's Formula 1 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix qualifying at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, it was a Red Bull on Pole Position but not the world champion. One year on from his first pole position came the second pole for Sergio Perez. The Mexican driver posted a stunning lap time of 1:28.265, narrowly edging out Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, who will start 12th because of a 10 place grid drop. Third was Fernando Alonso, 0.4 seconds behind Perez, but he moves up to start second, for an Aston Martin on the front row. Max Verstappen suffered a dramatic Q2 exit due to a driveshaft issue and will race from a disappointing 15th position. Aston Martin’s Fernando Alonso emerged as the fastest driver in the second practice session for the 2023 season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. The session saw the top 13 drivers finish within one second of each other, with Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in fourth place. Haas driver Nico Hulkenberg produced an impressive effort to come fifth. Temperatures were down to 22C in the evening running under lights, prompting several teams to immediately head out on the soft tyres. Alpine's Esteban Ocon used the softs to take first place, followed by Lance Stroll of Aston Martin, who had set the first-place benchmark on the mediums a few moments earlier. The first round of performance runs saw Leclerc surge ahead of his teammate Carlos Sainz and take the lead, which lasted for 20 minutes. Perez then shot into first place before Alonso took over the lead with a time of 1m30.907s, which remained unbeaten for the rest of the session. The drivers then completed the typical late-FP2 long-run data-gathering exercises. The stewards will investigate a pitlane incident where Nyck de Vries's AlphaTauri was released into Lando Norris's path. Alonso’s time followed his impressive performance in the first practice session where he split the two Red Bulls. Despite attempts by Alonso and Aston Martin to downplay their impressive pace from testing, they continue to be strong contenders. Aston Martin had two cars in the top six, with Lance Stroll finishing sixth in his second session back in the car. However, there were some concerns about Stroll's mobility, as he replied "I can't" when asked to compromise his line for Turn 1 later on in the session. The FIA, Formula 1's governing body, has handed Red Bull Racing a $7 million fine and an aerodynamic testing reduction after striking an agreement over its breach of Formula 1's $145m budget cap in 2021. The FIA revealed after the Japanese Grand Prix that both Red Bull and Aston Martin were in breach of F1’s financial regulations for 2021, putting them at risk of sanctions. Red Bull fiercely denied it had broken the budget cap, but entered talks with the FIA over an Accepted Breach Agreement to reach a settlement. Extreme weather is nothing new to Formula 1. But it seems more recently, it is becoming an issue for the cars. Kevin Turner and Stefan Mackley join Martyn Lee for the final part of our current series of "Top 10..." drivers. We're ending with Tyrrell. Already a successful entrant of other people’s cars, Ken Tyrrell became a Formula 1 constructor at the end of 1970. By the time his team closed its doors at the end of 1998, after being bought by British American Tobacco, Tyrrell had racked up 23 world championship grand prix victories, two drivers’ titles and a constructors’ crown. While much of that success came in the team’s early days, the well-organised squad was highly respected throughout its three decades and ran some great drivers, including up-and-coming talents. Despite its financial problems in the second half of its life, Tyrrell is 10th on the all-time world championship wins list, behind Benetton and ahead of BRM. For this top 10, we considered the amount of success the drivers scored with Tyrrell, the impact they had on the team and the circumstances of their time there. Daniel Ricciardo and McLaren have agreed to part ways at the end of the current Formula 1 season, bringing a premature end to his tenure at the Woking-based squad. In the wake of the Australian’s ongoing difficulties to get on terms with team-mate Lando Norris during their two years alongside each other, McLaren began a process several weeks ago to agree a separation. With McLaren hoping to sign Oscar Piastri for 2023, who is currently in a contract dispute with the Alpine squad where he is its reserve driver, it began discussions with Ricciardo about a termination of his current deal so it could open a slot for the youngster. Those talks have now reached a conclusion with McLaren and Ricciardo agreeing that this will be his final season with the team. The news was announced first by the Australian driver on Wednesday, ahead of this weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix. 20Mechanics are an integral part of motorsport regardless of discipline and those that work in the World Rally Championship mechanics are regarded among elite. These unsung heroes are expected to perform miracles against the clock to prepare and repair WRC cars during events. Unlike other forms of motorsport, rallying’s version of the circuit racing pitstop is known as a service and these occur after a series or loop of special stages held on closed roads. Drivers and co-drivers will return to the service park, where teams deploy a group of mechanics to repair any damage or change items on the cars in an allotted time period before the next set of stages. Once again there is an inflated sense of antagonism between some of the rivalries which does not please those looking for a ‘pure’ telling of the story. The largest omission is the lack of Max Verstappen, the Formula 1 World Champion, who finally provided Drive To Survive a title fight. Max has said he doesn't like the way some rivalries, such as the Norris vs Sainz in a previous series, are painted as more contentious than they really are. Without his direct involvement it's left to Christian Horner to talk about the Red Bull perspective on the title fight. The elephant in the room is the inclusion of Nikita Mazepin and discussions around Uralkali funding of the Haas team, given the recent Russian invasion of Ukraine and international sanctions against the Mazepin family. Mercedes put in some quick laps to top morning and afternoon sessions, with drivers running two by two, and both Red Bulls not far behind. For anyone hoping the new regulations might mean the competitive order was thrown up in the air will be disappointed. But for followers of Formula 1, you won't be surpirsed that the status quo is a good place to start when decoding the timesheets from testing. Maybe it's a sign that many of the teams are talking up Ferrari, or are they trying some smoke-and-mirrors to divert attention off their own cars. Formula 1 says it will not hold the Russian Grand Prix scheduled for 25 September "in the current circumstances" following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine: “On Thursday evening Formula 1, the FIA, and the teams discussed the position of our sport, and the conclusion is, including the view of all relevant stakeholders, that it is impossible to hold the Russian Grand Prix in the current circumstances.” The promoter of the Russian Grand Prix confirmed the contract to hold the race had been suspended, but also asl fans not to seek refunds for tickets as "it is still possible that the round will take place and will be held as previously scheduled". It's one month until Formula 1 reconvenes in Barcelona to run new cars for the first time, and we’re reconvening on the Autosport podcast to start our F1 technical coverage for the new season. After a short winter break, attention has turned from a controversial title-decider to how teams will have interpreted a new rule book. Autosport’s Top 50 drivers of the year is our traditional list picking out the great and the good from the motorsport season just gone. The UK's junior single-seater landscape is set to change for 2022, with new cars being introduced and even a new series launching next year. The GB3 Championship – which was previously known as British F3 until a mid-season name change enforced by the FIA – has bridged the gap between British F4 and FIA F3 for several years. It will introduce a new machine for its upcoming campaign, the Tatuus MSV-022, which will offer more power and downforce as well as the inclusion of a halo head-protection device. MotorSport Vision which runs the series has also announced a new championship for 2022 – the GB4 Championship – has been created as an entry-level into single-seaters and is open 15-year-olds. Former Formula 1 team boss Sir Frank Williams, whose squad became one of the most successful in grand prix racing’s history, has passed away. He was 79. A short statement from the Williams team said he had been admitted to hospital on Friday and passed away peacefully on Sunday morning surrounded by his family. The Williams team earned 114 F1 victories, along with seven drivers’ titles and nine constructors’ crowns, to became one of the best-known teams on the grid. Frank Williams had originally founded Williams Grand Prix Engineering in 1977, having previously run cars in Formula 2 and Formula 3. Today we speak with two people who knew Frank well and worked with him in different capacities. First we hear from motorsport writer and broadcaster Maurice Hamilton.
