臺南市，通稱臺南（俗字寫作台南；排灣語：Tailam；臺灣話：Tâi-lâm；客家話：Thòi-nàm），簡稱「南」，為中華民國直轄市，臺灣六都之一，位於臺灣西南部，其西面臨臺灣海峽、東面臨阿里山山脈、北面與嘉義縣鄰接 、南面與高雄市鄰接。面積2,191.65平方公里，為台灣各縣市中，平原區比例最大、地形最平緩的城市，農耕地面積全臺灣第一。阡陌交錯，公路道路為全臺最多，全市文化古蹟遍佈，多元文化並存。全市設籍人口約185萬人，其政府所在地分別位於安平區及新營區，採雙市政中心模式，人口最多的轄區為永康區。臺南為南臺灣，乃至於整個中南部文化、學術、教育、科技中心之一，除校本部在臺南的國立成功大學、國立臺南大學外，包含國家圖書館、中央研究院、工業技術研究院、科學園區、國立陽明交通大學南部分址均設在臺南。依據平面媒體民調，台灣縣市競爭力排名，臺南市連續4年高居六都第二名，減債能力也排名第二。現以傳統小吃、古蹟文化、夜市商圈、旅遊度假、山川田園、溫泉戲水吸引觀光人潮，並以宜居樂活城市著稱。幸福城市競爭力為六都第二名。臺南在全球化及世界城市研究網絡（GaWC）發表的2020年世界級城市名冊中被定義和歸屬於 Sufficiency（自給自足）等級的國際城市。
