Financing Future Cities: Urban energy

Cities make up approximately 78% of global energy demand, and they contribute 70% of global emissions. Cities are also at risk from the effects of rising global temperatures, which are caused by these emissions. Decarbonisation Cities for a Sustainable Future

Cities are critical drivers of commerce and innovation, and important focal points for community and culture. While they only cover about 3-4% of the world’s surface, they produce 75% of global GDP and contribute to over more than 70% of global carbon emissions. As we move to a net zero future, it’s clear that urban areas will have a crucial role to play in achieving this goal.

In this episode, Greg Clark, Group Advisor, Future Cities and New Industries, HSBC, discusses decarbonisation in cities, including strategies, policies and the shifts in behaviour that will facilitate the transition. This talk is from the FT Climate Capital: Developing Sustainable Future Cities event in November 2021.

The impact of Brexit on securities services (so far)

The transition period for the UK leaving the European Union (“Brexit”) ended on 31 December 2020. In the months before the transition period ended, the UK converted into law any existing EU regulations that had direct effect in the UK at the end of the transition period. During this “onshoring” process the UK in some cases made technical and other amendments to the legislation so that it would work in the UK after Brexit. EU Directives applying before 31 December 2020 already formed part of UK law, so did not need UK onshoring.
