泮溪龍船故事：
相傳明萬曆年間的一場龍舟比賽中，鹽步龍舟和泮塘凸眼龍遙遙領先，眼看鹽步龍舟奪冠在即，不料泮塘凸眼龍上的年輕人飛身一躍奪得了錦旗，隨後領取了燒豬美酒等獎品。泮塘父老知道后認為應該是鹽步龍舟贏得了比賽，便將獎品送回鹽步，但鹽步父老又將燒豬送回了泮塘。雙方互相推讓，最後一位老人說，鹽步龍舟年老，有白須，泮塘凸眼龍後生，鹽部為“契爺”，泮塘為“契仔”，結契認親吧。雙方欣然答應，從此兩鄉建立了深厚的友誼。
龍船結契傳為佳話，慈禧太后知道后，便賜鹽步龍舟為“鹽步老龍”之稱，並賜12支“雉雞尾”、一面“百足旗”為標誌，賜泮塘九支“雉雞尾”和“孖金錢”為標誌。如今，在泮塘五約的泮塘展覽館中，還展示著九支“雉雞尾”和“孖金錢”的龍船標誌，還有泮塘凸眼龍的模型。
The Panxi Dragon Boat Story:
According to legend, during a dragon boat race in the Wanli era of the Ming Dynasty, the Yanbu dragon boat and the Pantang convex-eyed dragon were leading far ahead. As the Yanbu dragon boat seemed on the verge of winning the championship, a young man on the Pantang convex-eyed dragon leapt forward and seized the pennant, subsequently claiming the prizes of roast pork and fine wine. Upon learning of this, the elders of Pantang believed that the Yanbu dragon boat should have won the race, so they returned the prizes to Yanbu. However, the elders of Yanbu, in turn, sent the roast pork back to Pantang. The two sides were courteously declining the prizes to each other until an elderly person suggested that since the Yanbu dragon boat was older with white beards, and the Pantang convex-eyed dragon was younger, Yanbu should be considered the "godfather" ("Qi Ye") and Pantang the "godson" ("Qi Zai"), and they should form a kinship bond. Both sides happily agreed, and since then, the two villages have established a deep friendship.
The kinship formed through the dragon boat race became a delightful tale. When Empress Dowager Cixi heard of it, she bestowed upon the Yanbu dragon boat the title "Old Dragon of Yanbu" and granted it 12 "pheasant tails" and a "centipede flag" as symbols. She also granted the Pantang nine "pheasant tails" and a "double gold coin" as symbols. Today, in the Pantang Exhibition Hall in the fifth contract of Pantang, the nine "pheasant tails" and the "double gold coin" dragon boat symbols are still on display, along with a model of the Pantang convex-eyed dragon.
This story reflects the spirit of sportsmanship and camaraderie that is often associated with traditional Chinese dragon boat races. The symbols granted by the Empress Dowager Cixi are indicative of the recognition and honor bestowed upon the villages for their display of mutual respect and kinship. The continued display of these symbols and the model of the dragon boat serves as a testament to the enduring bond between the two villages.
