SoberNotMature - Episode 106 (Calm Snark When Dealing With Thorns)

*Just a heads up, we had a slight delay again with the recording*

This week it's Mike and Bill again.

Mike started off with his reading and it was all about service. Doing things for other people and our lives get better. Imagine that.

Then a brief conversation about atheism. There is a reading in the 24 Hour Book every year and we talked about it. Mike is an atheist and Bill is at best agnostic, so it was a good conversation.

And we received some bad news this week. A very close friend of ours killed himself. He was around us from day one in our sobriety and he was a huge influence on us. It sucks and it's tragic, but we talked through it.

We wrapped up with a couple of nonsensical things and that was that.

Enjoy the episode.

SoberNotMature - Episode 105 (Technology Is Our Friend, But It Won't Pick Us Up From The Airport)

This week we have Mike and Bill AND... The start of Season 5!

We had some technology issues, so when you hear the delay with us talking, oh well. It is what it is.

**Make sure to scan the QR Code!!**

Mike did his reading and it was about living in the moment. That is something that we talk about a lot and it's the back bone of our sobriety.

We talked about judging people, the first time people drank, the easier, softer way, being a prick on purpose, risky places and the worst day sober verses the best day drinking.

We also reflected a little bit on the past 2 years, since our 2 year Podcast Anniversary is coming up this week.

And we decided that we are going to stick around a bit longer.

Enjoy the episode.

SoberNotMature - Episode 104 (Shark Jumping)

This week we have Mike and Bill and the Season 4 finale! It's just us, but as always, we filled the time.

Mike did his reading and it was about how fragile we all were and how we now work together. We had some laughs, but it was a good conversation.

One of us has a birthday this weekend and we revisited what we think of birthdays. (It's probably what you expect)

Then we were all over the place. We talked about Lent, a radio gig, God ads, Fletch, the 10th Step, regrets, being afraid of our illness, journaling and sayings from years past.

Don't worry, there was some nonsense also.

SoberNotMature - Episode 103 (Some Are Sicker Than Others)

This week we have a split episode!

Carly from Episode 83 is back and she has a bunch of stuff that she is doing and we wanted to help her spread the word.

She is still working on Trust Your Message @trustyourmess_age, she is modeling and she wrote a book, that is in print and now available as an audio book on Amazon. The book is called Human: Behind the Mask and you can find more information on her other Instagram page @bycarlyannmariereed

We sent Carly on her way and Mike did his reading. It was about surrender, acceptance and life on life's terms. All things that we talk about a lot and we had a good conversation.

Then on to the acronym HALT, the good and bad when it comes to grief and a few other small items that we complained about. That's it.

SoberNotMature - Episode 102 (Verbally Spanking The Groundhog)

This week we have...

Well, you are stuck with Mike and Bill this week and we had some catching up to do.

Mike did his reading and it was about the need for a higher power. Having one, trusting it and believing that it works. It was a good conversation.

Then some vacation talk from Bill's trip to Myrtle Beach and a funeral that he went to this week for his ex-mother-in-law.

On to alcohol awareness, mistakes in early recovery, not being a victim, absolute honesty and staying a beginner.

We also talked about a few possible upcoming guests and of course our usual nonsense.

SoberNotMature - Episode 100 (Idle Hands And Other Playthings)

This is Episode 100! Woohooo!

It's just us this week and Mike started out with his reading.

It was about this new life we have versus the old life that we thankfully left behind. We have the gift of choice and the ability to live an authentic life these days.

Then we talked about a new job and the stress of the job search. It all works out and in it's own time.

We looked back briefly at some of our episodes and mainly just talked about the fact that we are still here, doing this thing every week and that in itself is pretty cool.

Then on to substance abuse disorder, remembering a sponsor, idle hands and of course some nonsense.

The full audio is still here, but if you want to check out the video, visit us on YouTube - sobernotmature (and let us know what you think!)

Mike did his reading and it was about the Serenity Pray. It's something that we used a lot in the beginning and still use at times and we had a good conversation.

We received a nice comment from a follower and he definitely gets us.

Then a mish mash of stuff. Dry January, taking versus receiving, stubbornness, it's an inside job, death, and stupid phrases.

Happy Freakin' New Year! Well, it's almost that time and it's your favorite fellas joining you this week.

Mike's reading was about the New Year and we talked about what it was like then and what it's like now. (sounds kinda familiar)

We talked about an annoying word and we gave an update on the number of "F" words from the last episode. It was a lot.

Then on to square pegs, round holes, seeking out people like us, proud moments, drinking thoughts and what the word "sober" really means to us.

We also shared some stories about a few meaningful words that we have received over the years from those that we care about.

What else? Listen and find out.

SoberNotMature - Episode 96 (Leave It On The Steps Ya Filthy Animals)

This week we have a gift for you. Yep, it's us. Just in time for Christmas.

Mike did his reading and it was about the gifts that we get these days. Interesting lives and a world that is wide open. No more boredom and lives that have no meaning.

Then we jumped into the 12th Step and talked about what it means to us and why it's so important.

We had a couple of announcements about our friend Christine (@sober.as.a.mother From Episode 35) and our friends Carly and Breeze (@trustyourmess_age From Episode 83) You have to listen to hear the announcements, but it's all positive!

Let's see, what else... Our audience, Matthew Perry, disclosures, Shakespeare (yeah, we talked about Shakespeare) and we wrapped up with comparing ourselves.

This week it's just us and Mike and his girlfriend are in Mexico!

We started off with Mike's reading and it talked about how we all do this sober thing the same way, but also just a little bit differently. The same path, with slight (and unique) variances.

Then some nice comments from a listener and a follower.

A short story about another podcast and proof that we don't always think before we speak.

Crazy Megan sent us some questions a few weeks ago and we finally had the chance to answer them. (You can send some too!)

We wrapped up with a little nonsense. Shocker.

This week we have Mara! @marajsankin

Another really, really good friend from Cleveland.

We had a lot of fun with this conversation, but recovery is serious business with Mara. This is not her first run at this and she told us what happened and how she came back to sobriety.

She also taught us a new word... "sodriety." (listen and you'll hear what it means.)

The most important part of the conversation was about what she is doing now and what her life is like today.

He started using at 14 and gave up family and everything else that meant something to him.

Then he found a solution. He doesn't follow the same path as we do, but we are all headed in the same direction and we talked about the similarities, rather than the differences.

Today, he is an entrepreneur, a coach, a speaker and as he put it, he has found joy and peace.

SoberNotMature - Episode 92 (Blowing Your Ass Out And Other Questionable Behaviors)

It's the Gratitude Episode, with your friends, Mike and Bill!

Mike did his reading and yep, it was about gratitude. The importance of saying thank you, being kind and being better than we used to be.

Then we did a recap of the sober retreat that we went to last weekend. It was fun, engaging and we highly recommend attending a retreat. It was wonderful. We did have a slight "run in" with a dude that was NOT part of our group and it's a fun story.

Bill finished the Matthew Perry audio book and did a recap on that. A few interesting observations and some possible insight into how he may have been "working" his program.

We wrapped up with a couple of things from the daily readings that we do about pride and acting sober. Was there more? Maybe.

SoberNotMature - Episode 91 (Record Setting Dribblers)

Yep, this week it's Mike and Bill and an early release, since we have a busy weekend ahead of us.

Mike did his reading and it was about how "we" see alcohol and drugs, how "we" become fools when we drink, what we lose when we drink and ultimately what we gain when we stick around.

Then we chatted for a few minutes about chaos. The life of chaos that we used to live and the peace and quiet that we get to enjoy now.

The Holidays are coming up, so Mike did his normal message about how to get through the Holidays sober and we had a question from a listener and a follower about time and why we only count continuous time.

And a little bit more about Matthew Perry. It was a conversation based on an article in The LA Times and for the most part, we did not agree with the mindset of the author.

There was probably more, but I guess you'll just have to listen.

This week we have Michael! Our really, really good friend from Cleveland and one of our sober friends for over 13 years.

Michael told us a little bit about how he got here, but more importantly, why he stays here.

We talked about The Keating Center and the 3/4 house that we were all at. Then about the woman that he met, who became his wife and the mother of his 2 beautiful daughters.

There were poker nights, charity events, good times and rough times and even a trip to the all you can eat buffet at the casino (hence the episode title).

Basically, it was just 3 sober guys that have been through it together for over 13 years, having a conversation.

SoberNotMature - Episode 89 (Memories, Meditation and Mammaries)

It's your friends, Mike and Bill this week! And we had some things to talk about.

Mike did his reading and it was about monsters and miracles. Pretty much a then and now when it comes to folks like us, and we had a nice conversation about it.

Then on to Step 11 (Since it's the 11th month) and it deals with prayer and meditation. We both work this step every day, but maybe differently than some? It's important though, and we talked about it.

We talked about our mom and shared some nice memories. It's been a year since she passed, and it's been a good year, all in all. She lives on in our hearts and that's what matters.

And we jumped on the Matthew Perry wagon for a few minutes. Not to talk about his fame and his TV show, but the fact that he was one of us.

SoberNotMature - Episode 88 (Metal God Nostalgia & Piles Of Manure)

Yay! Just Mike and Bill this week. Eh, it is what it is, right?

Mike did his reading and it was about responsibility. Certainly something that most of us lacked before we got sober, so it was a good conversation.

Then we inadvertently got into a conversation about sponsors and sponsees. The main thing is that "we" can't keep anyone sober, but we can offer guidance and experience.

We chatted about meetings and how we picked them early on, a podcast episode with "the metal god," nostalgia and we received some comments from followers and non followers. The good and the not so good.

And I think we got filthy at the end, which is nothing new.

Our good friend and "bestie" from Cleveland.

From not knowing how she would do anything without a substance, to a life that is full beyond her wildest dreams.

SoberNotMature - Episode 86 (Birthday Cakes and Blood Splatters)

Yeah... it's Mike and Bill again this week. We recorded on Thursday this week and it's Bill's son's birthday!

Mike did his reading and it was about instincts, impulses and the dreaded idea of growing up. We have "not mature" in the name of our podcast, but even we have grown up. A little bit. It did make for a good conversation though.

Then we talked briefly about "that person" that wants to rid the world of the word alcoholic. We didn't beat that up too much, but we still have strong opinions about it.

Next was the story of the day that Bill's son was born and where part of the episode title came from. It was a beautiful day, but yeah, things got a little messy. (In a funny way)

We rounded out the episode with talk of moderation, harm reduction, a nice quote and comparing ourselves, especially in early recovery. I think there was some nonsense too.

SoberNotMature - Episode 85 (Emissions From Hot Burning Balls Of Gas)

Well, it's just the two of us again and we actually had quite a bit to talk about.

Mike did his reading and it was about choices. They are lost while we are drinking, but when we get sober, we have a "sense' of choice again. It was a good reading and a good discussion.

It's October, the tenth month, so we dove into the 10th Step. Personally, we both feel like this step is a big one and we talked about when we started practicing it, how it has helped us and maybe even makes us better people.

We did a recap of Mike and Chris' time at Cinema Wasteland last weekend and some people approached Mike again about the podcast. And... we have now partnered with the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, to accept donations for them through our website. Check it out at www.sobernotmature.com

The last thing we touched on was placing reasons on why "we" drink and why "we" become alcoholics. We have some opinions and as always, they are just our opinions.

Yep, just Mike and Bill this week and we were a little punchy, but in a fun way...

Mike did his reading, and as always it was a good one, that turned into a great conversation. Faith, openness, higher powers and light switches. (it will make sense when you listen)

We talked about the trip that Bill took, some old feelings and a story from a meeting that he went to in the bible belt. Lot's of God, but a good meeting nonetheless.

There was music talk, action items from our readings and when we started to actually feel value again after we got sober.

A quick plug for our favorite doctor, Dr. Sarah (from Episode 72). She appeared on another podcast recently, Sobriety Checkpoint, and you should check it out! @sobrietycheckpoint.co

Just Mike and I this week, but we did have a lot to talk about. We had a whole sheet full of notes, but really only talked about a few things.

Mike's reading had to do with the concept of "progress not perfection," and we know about that all too well.

Then we jumped into Step 9, because it actually is September already! That was a great conversation and one that I think everyone can relate to, even if you don't follow a 12 Step program.

We have been doing this podcast for 18 months now and we talked about that briefly and then Mike gave his traditional Holiday weekend pep talk, since of course it's Labor Day weekend (hint - it's just another day and just another weekend)

First of all, with 2 "Mike's," I tried to set up a nickname for the resident Mike, but I couldn't seem to keep that straight. I tried though...

Mike from Sober Press has become what we consider an Instagram friend and we have had plenty of conversations and interactions with him on the socials but this was our first chance to talk to him.

He was a bit under the weather, but was able to give us the "CliffsNotes" version of how he got sober and most importantly, we talked about what he does now.

Mike had a great reading this week and then we jumped into Step 8 for a little bit. It turned into a good conversation and one that may be helpful to some people.

A very good friend of ours passed away recently, but he died sober. He "graduated."

We told some stories and recalled some fun times with him and expressed a lot of gratitude for who he was to us. He was a good dude and he was instrumental in our sobriety. He will be missed.

Then we talked about the pains we all have. Getting old has its challenges.

Mike did his reading and it had to do with acceptance. Coincidentally, G has been having some struggles with acceptance and we had a nice discussion about that.

SoberNotMature - Episode 76 (Alysse B - Curates Us Soberly... But Not Maturely)

This week we have Alysse, founder of The Sober Curator. @thesobercurator

You may have read some of our posts as far as how we became acquainted and if not, we do talk about it briefly.

Alysse is truly one of us and she has 17 years sober. She has had her ups and downs, successes and failures and she does a great job of walking us through her story.

We heard a lot of things that we have heard before, such as trying to control her drinking, meetings were not for her (in the beginning), feeling like she was unique and dealing with depression and feelings of uselessness.

But today, she has a lot going on and that is the fun stuff. She has a full time job, the website, service work and a great outlook on life. You'll be happy that you listened to this one.

SoberNotMature - Episode 75 (King Roach - Grateful To Be In The Room)

This week we have Alex "King Roach" Montañez @ImKingRoach

Alex approached us a few months ago to be on and after a few adjustments and date changes, we were able to have a great conversation with him. He gave us a brief background about what happened and why he got sober, and then we got right into the fun stuff... what he is up to now.

He started his company www.dominatetheglobe.com in 2020, had some ups and downs and then got sober on 3/01/22. Drinking had become a daily thing for him and it was part of his life and his music. He shares how getting sober has given him back his life, allowed him to accomplish things he always dreamed of and as the title says, he is now grateful to be in the room.

Alex has a lot of positive things going on these days and we go through all of them in this conversation.

SoberNotMature - Episode 74 (Planting Flowers In The Turds)

Yep, it's Mike and Bill again. Fresh off a weekend of bikers, Jetts, Foos and a bad "hotel" experience. But, it was a great weekend.

We started off with Mike's weekly reading and it was a good one. All about service and we got into a conversation about what we do for service. Is it enough? Will it ever be enough? Listen and find out.

Then we recapped the weekend and we have some stories, but the bottom line is that we had a great time, listened to some great rock 'n' roll and we did it all sober.

We talked about a few items from our weekly readings, maintenance drinking (or not), trouble sleeping (yes more on that) and we got a very nice email from a listener, who is also an upcoming guest. What else? Garbage and nonsense.

SoberNotMature - Episode 73 (Fighting Relapse, Darkness and Foo)

Just us two knuckleheads this week, both in Indiana and we are going to the 120th Harley Reunion in Milwaukee! Bikers, Joan Jett and the Foo Fighters!

First of all, the reading from Mike and it was about not regretting the past, facing people that we hurt and we had a pretty nice conversation. That led into another reading that we came across this week about facing walls in our lives.

Mike has his radio gig coming up again! We talked about that briefly, but stay tuned for all of the details.

We have a new friend that we will be collaborating with, we received a very nice message from a listener, we talked about favorite concerts, drunken concerts, feeling down, then feeling great (and grateful) and we revisited the topic of relapse. We have some fairly strong opinions about that subject, but they are also very simple.

And then some nonsense. Enjoy the episode.

SoberNotMature - Episode 72 (Dr. Sarah Co-signs Our Bullshit and Takes Us Out of CrazyTown)

This week we talked with Dr. Sarah Michaud (Author "Co - Crazy") Website www.DrSarahmichaud.com YouTube - Leaving CrazyTown

"Co - Crazy begins with a chronicle of growing up in a family with alcoholism that eventually led to a harrowing journey and downward spiral into drug and alcohol addiction. Her inspiring recovery is deeply authentic, and Michaud’s vivid descriptions are both heartbreaking and illuminating."

We talked about her book, about her YouTube channel and about her 40 years of sobriety and then we talked about everything else.

She was a wonderful guest, we had a great time, a very engaging conversation and we will have her back again. Seriously, you just need to listen.

SoberNotMature - Episode 71 (Precariously Practicing Our Perfection)

Well... we had some challenges with this episode, but we made it through. As always, you will hear the challenges!

Mike had a great reading this week and it talked about building character through good habits. It also talked about values, morals and ethics, which are all things that we DID NOT have before we got sober. And Mike had a story from this week to go along with that whole concept.

We received a nice message from a listener with a request and we also received an email from a guy that contacted us over a year ago. Remember the guy that said that 90% of all podcasts fail in the first year? It was him and Bill emailed him back. It was fun.

Then on to The Absolutes again, sleeping issues (or not), indulgences after we got sober, work conferences and perfectionism. And then we were just done.

SoberNotMature - Episode 70 (Setting Our Boundaries - Keeping Out The Bull)

Well... we had a couple of technical issues, but it's our "rule" not to edit out the failures (haha), so you get to hear them.

Mike started out with a reading and it talked about "acting as if," which we have talked about before. It also talked about hurting people and the shame that we all usually feel when we first get sober. It brought about a pretty good conversation between us.

Then we talked about the wrap up of Bill's job last week, opening up on social media and we did a recap of our trip to Founder's Day.

What is our purpose today, nice things people say about us since we have been sober and setting boundaries.

Oh yeah, and Mike got some new equipment. No, that's not a euphemism. He got some new podcast equipment and we got to test that out.

SoberNotMature - Episode 69 (Coach David G - Owning Our Behavior, Without A Mortgage)

This week it's Coach David! He's a business coach and has been a sober member of this thing we do, for over 14 years.

Instagram - @coachdjgreer Website - coachdjgreer.com

He started off with the fact that he's adopted (and that becomes part of his story later) but had a relatively normal childhood. A decent student, played sports and partied on the weekends. Same thing when he went on to college.

Then came the work stress and more drinking. Trying to quit at times, unsuccessfully. Finally the moment of clarity and his first meeting. Coach David has had many great experiences since he has been sober, runs a successful business and is still active in the original meeting that he attended.

He has a wonderful story and we had a great conversation. Enjoy the episode.

SoberNotMature - Episode 68 (Became Willing To Remove Our Piss Drawers)

Founders Day Weekend!

We started off with the reading for the week and it was about doing the next right thing, the "we" of the program and positive thinking.

Then on to Step 6, which also played into the reading, and we had a nice discussion around that. And a technical difficulty. Throbbing and buzzing.

Some employment announcements and we talked about treating people well. We wrapped up with solving problems and pissing in drawers. Yes, that's where the title came from.

SoberNotMature - Episode 67 (Sober Friends' Matt - Floating Our Boats & Avoiding The Floaters)

This week, Matt From Sober Friends Podcast joined us. ( Instagram - @soberfriendspod )

Matt has a fairly normal back story, where his family drank, he never wanted to be like that and he actually had a plan on how NOT to be an alcoholic. But we know how that goes.

That was maybe 15 minutes of the episode, and then we just shot the breeze for the rest of the time. We talked about the podcasts and why we do them, what recovery really means and what we do with our time. We talked about the path, different ways to stay sober, anonymity and other things that I can't even recall.

It was literally just 3 guys that have been doing this thing for a bit, having a candid conversation about sobriety. Enjoy the episode.

SoberNotMature - Episode 66 (Taking Our Time Machine For A Test Drive)

Mike and I again this week!

We started out with Mike's reading and it had to do with the "we" of the program and the fact that we can't do this alone. That led into a conversation about a funeral that Mike went to this week. It was a fairly deep conversation about why "we" need help and we can't do this by ourselves.

Then some messages from a couple of our followers. One in particular that sent us a clip for Mike to listen to. (it's a fun one)

What makes us special, I Love Lucy, hiding drinking, reversing the why (Mike told me I didn't make sense with this one), nighttime drinking and going back in time.

SoberNotMature - Episode 65 (Our Reptilian Brains - Or How Not To Act Like A Trouser Lizard)

Just Mike and I this week and at about the 51 minute mark, we had a technical difficulty... but we started up a new session and powered through!

We started off with Mike's reading and it was about new ideas and how our brains tend to reject those ideas. Change. Fear. We don't like those things.

It's the middle of the month, but we hadn't talked about the 5th Step yet, so we dove into that. Speaking of change and fear, it's a scary Step, but as you will hear, we came out on the other side a little lighter and with some direction.

On to the summer drinking season, what to do and how to handle it. We have some thoughts and some ideas. Then we talked about cravings, topping other people's stories and finally we talked about whether wounds heal or do we just learn to manage them?

And some other stuff. Enjoy the episode.

SoberNotMature - Episode 64 (Shay - Now With Positive Ripples)

This week it's all Shay! (Follow her on Instagram @shaysnotdrinking)

Born and raised in Utah, she talked a little bit about her childhood and some of the challenges that she faced. She also shared that she didn't even touch alcohol until she was 19 and married.

When alcohol entered her life, so did the problems. A failed marriage, the rehabs, hiding her drinking and winding up in a facility on a 72 hour hold.

Then she found sobriety. Now 3 years sober, she is happily married, a mom of 2 girls, she has a community on social media and a life that she is proud of. Most importantly though, she has the ability to help people and cause "positive ripples." (hence the episode title)

She talked about her childhood, about being spoiled and said words that many of us are familiar with... "It was all about me."

The party kicked off at 18, and slowly changed over the years. She met her future husband (Tony from Episode 49) and she walked us through their progression from weekend partying, to losing it all.

@healingwithasobergirlpodcast

The focus was on grief and gratitude, but we also got into a few other topics and had some laughs.

We talked about why we do our podcasts, what we do to stay active and "sane," how we find gratitude in the losses that we have had and we talked a little bit about our anniversaries.

Mike did his reading for the week and it talked about "acting as if," and "faking it, til you make it." We agree with both of those sayings, and we had a good conversation about it.

Listener message! Yep, we got a message from one of our listeners and it's a fun one.

We expressed a little bit of that good old fashioned gratitude for the past 13 years, talked about upcoming guests, "future wreckage," seeing booze everywhere, deep conversations with our parents and a random question about musicians.

As we have mentioned, she is a friend of ours from Cleveland, she's been sober for over 10 years and she has a hell of a story.

She took us through her normal childhood, talked about her normal friends and her normal life. And like many of us, things stayed normal; until they weren't.

One of the biggest things that she was taught was, "listen and do." She still does that to this day, along with many other things that she was taught in the beginning.

SoberNotMature - Episode 59 (Make Sure It Doesn't Get Kinked)

I think we set a new record with the "F" word. It was said 113 times in this episode.

We started out with Mike's reading and it talked about not being the center of attention, the fact that we can't have everything, and doing the next right thing.

Then an Action item from a reading this week about resentments, that turned into a decent conversation.

On to anxiety, depression, getting early morning texts, someone messing with the word sober and we even got off on a tangent about our mom.

And apparently this little thing we do is spreading around a bit. Mike was approached last weekend by some listeners, who seem to enjoy the podcast.

Finally, we wrapped up with a thing that Bill's dad used to say. We think it's worth the wait. Enjoy the episode

We started off with Mike's reading and it was a good one again. It was about giving this thing away to others and not laying our anger on others. That led into a "mood" that Bill has been in and he shared that.

Then we jumped into the 4th Step, since it's the beginning of the 4th month.

We mention this on the episode, but even if you aren't a 12 Step person, take the time to listen. We feel that we put these things in real life terms and whether you are a 12 stepper or not, we think you'll get something out of it.

On to a couple of Action items from recent readings, then a conversation about one of our favorite podcasters and a guest that he had on a few years ago. They talked about why they do things like this and how it may fill people's holes. And yes, the episode title was born.

Just Mike and I this week, since we had a guest that cancelled... But we did just fine on our own.

Mike started off with a great reading that talked about responsibility, facing things head on and being confident rather than arrogant. We also talked about one of the actions from a different reading and we both had a wonderful revelation.

Then we talked about the guest that cancelled and had some fun with that. Thanks Little Dickie. You helped us fill up a chunk of the episode and you weren't even there.

Last weekend was The Keating Center event and the grandson's birthday party, so we recapped both of those events. We also touched on dating apps, memories of drunken events of the past and coming across pictures from those times. (That's where the episode picture came from and yes. That's drunk Mike)

The St. Patrick's Day, weekend extravaganza episode! Not really an extravaganza, but we do talk about the day of green.

We started out with Mike's reading and a discussion about one of the actions that we read about. That led into the charity event that is going on this weekend for The Keating Center and events of the past.

Some stories were told about our shenanigans on St. Paddy's Day in the past, and we are both grateful that we are not doing that today.

We received a complaint on a meme that was posted and we have a surprise new follower, listener and coffee customer.

Then we dove into people disappearing, "continuous sobriety," and what we've learned about ourselves since we have been sober. What else? I guess you will just have to listen.

Well... we had a slight issue with a power outage.  But as always, we don't edit so you will hear it all.  Just as it was recorded.

Mike did his reading and it was about surrender.  We also dove into Step 3 (beginning of the 3rd month) and had a nice talk about that.  We talked about what we did and what we keep doing every day.

Then we talked about another power that is greater than us... Google.

We chatted about drinking dreams, drinking beyond the buzz, a recalled moment of spite, recovery literature, peeling back the onion, celebrating our successes, losing friends when we got sober and the term "balls deep" came up a few times.  Hence the episode title.

SoberNotMature - Episode 53 - Sonia K - Small Groups Meet Small Minds (We Mean Us)

** The audio may not be the best quality this week, since there was a glitch with our studio software.  The conversation is of great quality though! **

This week it is all Sonia!  We figured out pretty quickly that we have a lot in common with her and it helped to make a great conversation.

Visit her on Instagram @joineverblume

She talked a little about her childhood, when she started drinking and how it escalated to a daily activity.   A successful business woman, with a "work hard play hard" mentality, then actually had a cognizant thought that she should get sober and she did it.

Sonia is the founder of EverBlume, which provides small group recovery meetings where members are matched into groups based on what they are struggling with (i.e. The First 90 Days, Self-Esteem, Grief, Relationships). The goal is for members to find connection through conversation, and get meaningful support and feedback from each other.  She tells us how she started that and what she is doing with it today.

Megan has been a friend of ours for a long time, but we even heard some things in her story that were new to us.

She talked about her drinking and using days, "Jack Daniels from the rip," and the fact that she "liked chaos and drama."  Now she lives a life of gratitude, has 2 adorable children, a good job, a house and a husband who has been a friend of ours since we were 3 months sober.

Mike had a great reading from this week and it focused on freedom and responsibility.  That led into a conversation about how we felt when we first got some freedom after we got sober.

We talked about Step 2 (cuz it's the start of the second month of the year), and the insanity that we had to overcome.  We told some stories about our drinking and using at the end, the morning pick me up verses drinking until you drop.

Could it be that simple?  It's a repeated story, but it's important.  (Hint: The answer is "yes.")

New Year's Eve.  Just another day, but we offer some advice (again) about how to get through this "festive" time.  We even tell some stories about New Year's Eve's of the past.  Before and after we got sober.

One of us is feeling foggy and kind of overwhelmed lately.  We talk about that and it helps.

We chatted about his trip, our old neighbor, our mom's episode (Episode 37), the estate sale and the fact that we can be trusted these days.

The presence of people after they die, "you're too strong to relapse," gateway drugs, the physical damage we did to our bodies and influential people.

Finally we had a brief conversation about our followers vs. listeners (chicks vs. dudes) and we touched on the important "step" of righting our wrongs.

SoberNotMature - Episode 42 (The Results of Shoddy Workmanship Are Still Results - Keep That In Mind)

We start off with the tale of an unhappy follower.  It appears that "Do the f*cking work. Don't be lazy," doesn't sit well with everyone.

Then a happy story of one of our friends and his sober success.  Surprisingly from doing the f*cking work.  We talk about cleaning up shit.  Literally.

Then on to a relapse story.  Someone that did NOT do the f*cking work, and this one hits home for us.  It's someone that is very close to us.

Triggers again.  We still have our opinions about them and we do a recap of what we discussed back in Episode 7.

And we end by giving a list of the books that we read every morning, which is part of the f*cking work that we do every day.

Can you see that we are sort of making fun of the person that we pissed off?  Sort of... but we all need to do the work.  It's just that simple.

SoberNotMature - Episode 41 (Dwelling Is Bad - You'll Have To Move Along)

Holy hell, we had a lot to talk about.  We aren't sure if it made any sense, but we talked a lot.

We have a new podcast friend and it sounds like she will appear with us and vice versa in the not so distant future.

We both talked to normies this week, who said that this thing we do helps them. Who would have thought?

Then we brought up Pulp Fiction, slip vs relapse, higher powers and happiness. We even tried to pick our favorite Step.

What to do when you wake up in a pissy mood? Or hell, when you are in a good mood and you don't know why?

Mexican vacations, YouTube, dwelling.  Yep, we started to ramble.  Oh well...

SoberNotMature - Episode 40 (Gratitude - Yanking The Threads of The Tapestry of Life)

It's all about Gratitude.  The episode and the life that we need to live.

First of all, the podcast is almost 9 months old!  Still going strong?  Well... still going at least.  We also spent some time at our mom's house today.

What are we grateful for?  The people in our lives; family; sobriety; this podcast.  The list is endless and that is the point.

And we wrap up with a couple of life sayings.

SoberNotMature - Episode 39 (Have A Plan - So You Don't Get Carried Away)

We start off talking a little bit about the last week and a few things about our mom.

Then some Holiday talk.  What we do and what we have done for all these years to stay sober during the Holidays.  Like the title says... have a plan.

Goofy recovery sayings, some stories about the early days and of course some general banter.  And cursing.  Lots of cursing.

SoberNotMature - Episode 38 (Easing Back To Normal - Whatever The Hell That Is)

Once again, it's been a hell of a week, but as the title says, we are "easing back to normal."

We start off by talking about the time we spent with our family this past weekend, our mom's service and how grateful we are to have all of "those people" in our lives.

We talk about the support that all of us received, the kind words and what people say when they don't know what to say.

We reminisce a little about our time at the Keating Center, we touch on charity events and giving back.

And finally, we end the episode as we normally do.  Filthy and with laughter.

SoberNotMature - Episode 37 (To Our Mom - Parting Is Such Sweet Sorrow, And We're Grateful For Both)

This episode is all about our Mom.  She passed away this week (10/30/22) and it's been a hell of a week.

We dealt with shock, disbelief, some things that we have never had to deal with before and also a bad funeral home.

Then we got busy.

We have been taught a lot in sobriety and even though you can't be completely prepared for something like this, we have been given a road map.  And so far... we have made it through.

We love you Mom and we will miss you.

SoberNotMature - Episode 36 (Project Clean - Wash Your Ass And Make The World A Better Place)

This episode is all Rory and his "mission first" company, Project Clean.

@projectclean_suds

He celebrated a year of recovery in September and he tells us how he got here.  And then the fun began.

We had the chance to hear how he started Project Clean, why he refers to it as a "mission first" company and the kicker; 50% of the net profits support Addiction Recovery.

It's a cool mission, a worthy cause and it was a great conversation.

This episode is all Christine.  No Need for us to get cute or fancy with this title.  She is "Sober As A Mother."

@sober.as.a.mother

As we have said all week, she is a friend and we had a wonderful conversation with her.

She talks about how she got here, how she stayed sober and all of the work that she does now.  We had some laughs, but we also talked about some good old fashioned recovery.

This week it's all Travis.

His story is not "unique," and admittedly, neither is he.  He battled through alcohol and drug addiction, spent time in jail and emerged as a Best Selling Author, with a dog by his side.

We had a great conversation and it's one that you don't want to miss.

This week it is all Tim.  ( Instagram @tlodgen )

He has a hell of a story and we are not going to diminish it by trying to explain it here.  We will say that he has Military experience, was a combat fighter, battled mental health issues and has 19 months now on the other side.

One note - This appearance was the 68th podcast that he has done in 19 months.  Yep. The 68th...

SoberNotMature - Episode 32 (Sometimes You Just Have To Knock One Out - Then Dwell On The Past A Bit)

This week we talk for a bit and then rewind for a bit.  Not the best of, but some of... the past stuff that we have done.

We get into a brief conversation of who Mike reminded Bill of recently and we talk about a weird situation with a sponsor.

And the story of "Crazy Megan."

The past clips are from Episode 4, Episode 10 and Episode 13.  Our top episodes.  We aren't saying they are the best, they just have the most plays.

* There was a slight issue with Bill's audio, since he was testing out a new mic setup. It will be fixed next week *

SoberNotMature - Episode 31 (Gretchen - G Signs and Getting Our Egos Stroked)

This episode is all Gretchen!  Oh sorry... all "G."

We had a wonderful conversation with her and she walked us through what got her here, her early days in "The Cult," and what she does today.

We talked about the name that Mike uses when he logs in to Riverside (she got a case of the giggles over that), we talked music, a little bit about normies and she even said some nice things about us.

We think you should listen.  It's worth the hour or so.

Yep, just Mike and I this week and it appears we had some catching up to do.

Once again... we talk about the trend of people wanting to eliminate the word alcoholic.  We have some opinions on that.

We talk about the newcomer, emotional sobriety, working in the recovery field and a little bit about football.  (Side Note - As we started talking about football, Bill spilled an entire travel mug of coffee.  Can you tell when it happened?)

He has a background in AA, went through a hell of a lot to get to where he is today and he is the author of the book in the episode picture.

Welcome to Season 2!  And the 6 month anniversary of this little podcast.

This one is all Daphne, our good friend from Instagram (@nomo.wino.daph)

She is a trip and a whole lot of fun!  She told us her story... all of the things that brought her into sobriety.  And we all lost count of the number of times that the phrase "ya'll" was used.

She's a sweetheart and we are actually going to have her back, so that we can get into the sober part of her journey.

This is the final episode of Season 1 and we do a recap of how we got here with the podcast. How it started, where the name came from and what we like most about doing this.

We talk about our sponsor in Cleveland, a spider, gratitude and when we took our first drink.

SoberNotMature - Episode 25 (Sister Act)

This time, it's all Kathy.  (And the crinkling sound that you hear WILL be explained and it goes away...)

For those that don't know, she is our normie sister and a hell of a good sport for putting up with "these knuckleheads."

She has some great questions and we get into some deep conversations.  One of those has to do with how Bill was for the last 6 months that he was drinking. We also have some fun, but if this wasn't fun, we wouldn't do it.

Oh yeah. And she refers to Mike as a marshmallow.

SoberNotMature - Episode 24 (A Normie Walks Into A Circus and We Accept Her As One Of Us)

Chris, Chris and more Chris!

We have our first guest on to run a little test with the new recording software, and it's Mike's girlfriend, Chris.  To begin with, I don't know that we had planned to fill the entire episode with her, but man... we are glad that we did.

She's a normie, but has been around "us people" for years and has now been around Mike and our sober group for 6 years.  She was supposedly "unprepared," but she had a ton of questions and topics and we all had a great time and a great conversation.

** Just a heads up though; we get a little more raw in this episode and talk more about actual alcohol and drug use. We also tell a few jokes about celebrities that have passed from their alcohol or drug use.  If those things could affect you, we have 23 other episodes for you to enjoy.

As Mike says, "What's the title of this podcast?"  I think we live up to the name quite well this week.

Finally we talk about what our biggest misconceptions were about getting sober and the things we never expected. Enjoy the episode.

Based on a suggestion, we actually talk about medicinal weed.  The most monumental year or time in our sobriety and finding our identity with major changes or moves.

When you're feeling out of sorts, lost or squirrely, what do you do? And how we felt the first time we did certain things sober.

Handling death now vs. when we were drinking and forcing things vs. letting things just happen.  We wrap up with a very brief conversation about current events.  Enjoy the episode.
