Brandon expounds on the important role of silica when dealing with extreme heat, and also emphasizes that having adequate silica available helps deal with both extremely hot AND extremely cold temperatures. World renowned cannabis IPM expert Matthew Gates is back on the show to do an in depth exploration of all things RUSSET MITES. These worm-like little creatures wreak havoc on your grow and can cause total crop loss if not handled correctly. Matthew gates talks about mites in general and how they behave, as well as the differences between the two most common cannabis oriented microscopic mites- broad mites and russet mites. This turns the conversation towards insect identification, and Matthew shares exactly how to identify the worm shaped russet mite under a scope, as well as the fatter, football shaped broad mite. Actual plant symptoms are also discussed, with the first infected plants to exhibit the worst leaf clawing, warping and twisting - followed by the telltale "rust" that accompanies the russet mite (sometimes also called the rust mite). Synchangel also extrapolates on how these microscopic mites breed, highlighting the importance of understanding the reproductive cycle of the pest you're trying to combat. Dormancy and hibernation is a threat as well, with the russet mite producing a particular type of female when environmental factors are reached that allow the population to overwinter. Matthew wraps the show by talking about environmental factors such as heat influencing how fast the pests in your tent reproduce- and how fast they decimate your precious flowers...

OK Calyx is back for part two of his interview, perfect for Plant Health July! OK Calyx discusses some of his favorite natural farming techniques to employ when growing cannabis and other plants. He starts by talking about composting, and how learning to compost really led him down the road of microbiology forward, closed loop farming. OKC gives us some great composting tips, differentiating between static piles and turned piles. He also talks about some minimal turning experiments he is doing, to see how much he can speed up his compost pile with just a few turns a year. Steve shares how he brought many modern poly-hybridized strains down to Colombia, and how some adapt to the local climate much better and more quickly than others. First time guest and old school Oklahoma grower OK Calyx joins the podcast for an awesome episode about the history of cannabis in Oklahoma, and how it shifted from a harsh black market state to the current cannabis epicenter. OK Calyx talks about the days of growing underground, how hard the police were on cannabis, and how limited the genetic availability was to cultivators. He also talks about how he had to live in secret with his own medicinal use of cannabis, having transitioned from harmful pharmaceuticals and alcohol to medical cannabis usage. Nik talks about his extensive background in a variety industries in the fields of chemistry and science, and what led him to eventually study agriculture and microbiology full time. He talks about carbon forward nutrition, and the difference between loading the atmosphere with C02 versus loading the root zone with supplemented carbon.
