Le Parisien reports that English singer, actor, and Francophile Jane Birkin passed away on July 16 at the age of 76. Birkin was revered for her edgy Sixties fashion. This comes less than two years after Birkin suffered a mild stroke, and after she was forced to cancel a handful of gigs in May owing to health concerns. She left behind two little daughters.

In 2001, Birkin was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her services to acting and Anglo-French cultural ties, and her later body of work featured politically charged songs. Her stardom skyrocketed, however, after a nude appearance in the cult classic Blow-Up by Michelangelo Antonioni in 1966. A major turning point in her six-decade-long singing career was when she sang provocatively on the Serge Gainsbourg duet "Je t'aime... moi non plus" in 1969.Birkin's erotic breathing in lyric intended for Brigitte Bardot caused the BBC to reject the song, and the Vatican criticised it. In 2018, Birkin said to Vogue France, "We never thought for a moment that the song would become such a symbol of freedom—all over the world." In private, people from Spain to Argentina listened to it. Up to his death in 1991, Birkin and Gainsbourg worked together frequently.

Birkin, who spent the majority of her life in France, was awarded the French Ordre National du Mérite in 2004 and again in 2015. She has appeared in 65 films, including La Piscine (1969) and Death on the Nile (1978). In 1973, she published her debut album, Di Doo Dah, and in 2017, at the age of 71, she released Birkin/Gainsbourg: Le Symphonique, a collection of Gainsbourg covers performed by Nobuyuki Nakajima and his orchestra. She took the music all the way from Calais to New York's Carnegie Hall.Birkin's androgynous style initially captivated the fashion world from Chelsea to Cannes, and it has since endured as an unrivalled classic. There were bell bottoms and braces, as well as gilded minidresses and shirts for men. She told Vogue France in 2018 that she found images of herself from 1968 "horrible," because she looked like she had doll eyes with her heavy eyeliner and an exaggerated lips and fringe. When I was 40, I went through a very exciting time in my life. I started wearing singlets made of Scottish cotton, men's shirts by Agnès B layered over pants that were three sizes too big, a thin red leather belt, and laceless sneakers. Her eponymous Hermès bag, which was inspired by a chance meeting in the stratosphere, debuted that same year.

"I was on an aeroplane when a plastic bag holding all my things broke and everything fell out—my date book, papers, everything," she said to T: The New York Times Style Magazine in 2010. "As I was wishing aloud that Hermès would produce a bag large enough to hold all my belongings, the man next to me revealed himself to be the company's head designer, Jean-Louis Dumas! He started making the Birkin bag because they already had the Kelly bag (named after Grace Kelly).
