Magnitude 6.3 Earthquake Strikes Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan; No Injuries Reported
On Friday at 2:42 p.m., a strong 6 magnitude earthquake struck Ishikawa Prefecture in Japan, measuring a 6 on the shindo (intensity) scale. The quake occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers on the northern tip of the Noto Peninsula on the Sea of Japan coast, approximately 300 kilometers northwest of Tokyo.
Although there was no threat of a tsunami, the Meteorological Agency cautioned that sea level changes of less than 20 cm were possible. NHK reported that authorities were investigating reports of damaged buildings, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.
The Hokuriku Shinkansen train line between Nagano and Kanazawa stations was among the lines that were temporarily suspended due to the quake. Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings reported no damage at the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant in Niigata Prefecture.
