148 The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit

When St. Joan of Arc was confronted with a tribunal made up of the best theologians in France, she didn’t stand a chance. However, her answers were so profound and clear, that she baffled all those who were trying to prove her wrong. Her answers were examples of the gifts of the Holy Spirit—particularly that of Wisdom—put into action.

In this episode we speak about the Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit, which are given to us in Baptism. They are “habits” infused by God in Baptism that enable us to be receive and be docile to the actual graces given by the Holy Spirit. Listen in to get a glimpse of these amazing gifts and be inspired by the examples of the Shepherds of Fatima, and St. Joan of Arc!

- The topics discussed can be found in the Catechism, numbers 1830-1832.

What do Habakkuk, Job and the Good Thief (who was crucified with Christ) have in common? They are all amazing examples of the supernatural virtue of Hope. Today we look at the Theological Virtues, and the virtue of Faith in particular, how it is a theological virtue infused by God in baptism, that enables us to believe in God, and believe in everything that God has said and revealed to us through Jesus Christ, which the Holy Church presents to us and taught by God. 142 God works through the hands of a Priest

Today I share a simple experience that reminded me how God can work at any time and unexpectedly through the hands of a Priest. Some weeks ago I attended SEEK, a conference with some 20,000 college students in attendance, and some 450 priests helping with confessions. I hope this story is an occasion to reinvigorate the appreciation of the Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ, to pray more fervently for all priests, that our Lord may give us the grace to persevere always in a virtuous and holy way of life… Let us pray as well that our Lord may continue to call young men to the priesthood and that he may give them the courage and the strength to say NO to the attractions of the world and be willing to sacrifice it all for Jesus Christ and for the salvation of souls.

141 Not just doing…, but BEING good

After considering the virtuous example of how St. Francis de Sales was able to overcome his bad temper with much effort and patience (scratch marks were found under his desk!), we look at what are some key principles to living a virtuous life. What is VIRTUE and why is it important? In particular, that we should have as a goal not just “doing good things that can be seen by others” but above all “being good and virtuous”, in a word, to “become like God” (St. Gregory of Nyssa).

140 A New Year under the protection of the Mother of God

The Christmas season is in full swing, and the New Year is here! As we begin 2024, on January 1st, we celebrate the Solemnity of the Virgin Mary, Mother of God. She is our protection and our strength as we begin anew. The Christian Tradition teaches us a beautiful Marian Antiphon, very proper to this time of the year, called the Sub Tuum Praesidium, in English, “We fly to your protection”. Today I reflect about the historical, theological, and spiritual value of this prayer, which is the most ancient Marian prayer of which we have an original written record. Listen as the Miles Christi seminarians sing this beautiful Gregorian Chant piece!

133 Understanding the moral value of our human actions

In this episode we look into the “sources” of the morality of our human actions, specifically, what is the “moral object” what are the “intentions” and what are the “circumstances” of a human act. We address why “the end doesn’t justify the means” and why some actions are always morally illicit, like the case of abortion, blasphemy and perjury.

132 “Saul was consenting to Stephen’s execution.” (Acts 8:1)

Freedom is not a burden—it is a great GIFT from God that enables us to love Him and love our neighbor. However, it comes with a great responsibility. Soon after the coming of the Holy Spirit in Pentecost, St. Paul—actually called “Saul” at the time—consented to St. Stephen’s execution (Acts 8:1). While others threw the stones, he held their cloaks—giving his internal consent. In this episode we address the responsibility and imputability of deliberately chosen acts, even the interior ones, and the value of human freedom. We also talk about how Christ’s grace can free us from slavery to sin. I share some great biblical examples and also a story about my personal experience.

131 “For Freedom Christ Has Set Us Free”—St. Paul (Life of Bl. Franz Jägerstätter.)

One of the fundamental pillars of the Christian moral life is our human freedom. Freedom is a gift of God given to us in order to choose freely what is good, what is according to the will of God. That gives us our dignity and our responsibility. 126 The Beatitudes – The New Law of the Gospel

The Beatitudes of the Gospel are eight statements that our Lord taught within the context of the Sermon of the Mount (chapters 5-7 of St. Matthew). They are attitudes, ideals we have to aim for if we want to be true disciples of Christ. They portray, in some way, an image of Jesus Christ, they describe the heart of the Gospel. Those who live them out are “blessed”, they are favored by God, and will receive eternal happiness, the reward of Heaven.

125 Jesus Christ, the Point of Reference of our Moral Life

Jesus Christ is the foundation and the center of all the moral teaching of the Catholic Church. Our Lord became man to redeem us, but also to teach us the way to Heaven, the way to our fulfillment, the way to complete joy. So, the moral teachings of the Church, with all its precepts and “rules”, is like a help, like a road map that shows us the way to salvation. Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

120 Married Couples are the Bulwark of Society

Married couples are the bulwark of society. Without married couples, society would fall apart and the Catholic Church would be in a serious crisis. Sacramental Marriage has certain God-given characteristics, or “goods”, and some responsibilities. In this episode we speak about how marriage is one and indissoluble, a life-long commitment that requires mutual fidelity of the spouses, openness to life (which includes the education and Christian formation of the children), and a concern of each spouse for the physical, emotional and, above all, spiritual well-being both of the other spouse and of their children.

Today I talk about the effects of the sacrament of Matrimony, particularly, the marriage bond and the graces it gives to fulfill the responsibilities of the spouses. 113 The Sacrament of Marriage, a Treasure in the Church

Louis and Zelie Martin, the parents of St. Therese of Lisieux, are a model of Christian marriage. Today we look at their example and seek their inspiration, as we delve into the great treasure of the Sacrament of Marriage, how, according to the nature God gave it, it is between one man and one woman, for their entire lifespan, for the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of children. When the spouses are baptized, this reality of marriage is a sacrament, which—when validly celebrated and consummated—no human being can break apart. May we have many holy and stable marriages in the Church!

108 Fr. Walter Ciszek – “The Mass Gave Us Strength”

Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J., (1904-1984) was born in Shenandoah, PA. He entered the Society of Jesus, and soon after he volunteered to be—after his ordination—a missionary to Russia. Ordained in 1937, he was assigned to a Parish in Albertyn, Poland. After the Russian invasion of Poland, he went with another priest toward Russia, in search for work. But the conditions were miserable, and the prospect very dark. Fr. Ciszek was faced with a terribly disappointing situation. In the midst of that desolation, the only strength was the occasional celebration of the holy Mass, in secret and in the woods… His priesthood, and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist helped Fr. Ciszek persevere through terrible hardships. What is there in the Mass, what is there in the Priesthood of Jesus Christ that can give us such interior strength and endurance?

- Fr. Walter Ciszek’s LIFE story can be read in the book: Walter Ciszek, With God in Russia, Ignatius Press, San Francisco, 1997.

- Fr. Walter Ciszek’s spiritual commentary to his story (and the quote I read in the episode) can be found in: Walter Ciszek, He Leadeth Me, Image, New York, 1973.

105 The Priesthood, A Gift of the Heart of Jesus

“The Priest is a gift from the Heart of Christ” said Pope Benedict XVI in June 2010, quoting St. John Vianney, the Curé of Ars (France). There is no Eucharist without the Priesthood. The priest is chosen from among the people to serve the people in the things that refer to God. Only the priest can consecrate the Body and Blood of Christ, and only the priest can absolve sins in sacramental Confession. Today I talk about the priesthood, and why it is such a gift from Jesus to the Church and to all humanity.

104 Healing Miracles through Our Lady of Lourdes

The Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette Soubirous 18 times, between February 11, 1858, and July 16, 1858, in a grotto within a massive granite formation called Massabielle. This is near the mountain town of Lourdes, on the French Pyrenees. Among other messages, Our Lady encouraged everyone to pray the Rosary and do penance for sinners. When asked what her name was, the ‘Lady of the Grotto’ answered “I am the Immaculate Conception.” The site has been—for more than 165 years—a pilgrimage destination, and a place where many (thousands) of miracles of spiritual and physical healing occurred. In this episode I welcome Emma Shea and discuss with her some of her experiences when visiting the shrine, and some of the history and spirituality of the apparitions. We also talk about the Spiritual Testament of St. Bernadette Soubirous.

99 Why Does the Church Offer Indulgences

One of the most important criticisms that Luther had against the Church was that some priests were selling indulgences. While “selling” them was an abuse, their proper use is of greatest importance. In today’s episode, we speak about one of the greatest ways you have to help those who have passed away—a treasure of the Catholic Church called “indulgences”. They are simple actions of devotion that, by the merits of Christ and the saints, can be very helpful to us and to the souls in Purgatory.

98 St. John Nepomucene and the Seal of Confession

Today I welcome Colton and Ben to speak about the Sacrament of Confession. St. John Nepomucene’s life and martyrdom is a reminder of the obligation that priests have of not sharing any sins that have been said during a sacramental confession. The king at that time wanted St. John to say whether the queen had confessed anything regarding a possible sin, but St. John refused. Listen in to know what happened next!

I explain the difference between “perfect contrition” and “attrition” or “imperfect contrition”, and how the sacrament of confession changes our attrition to contrition. 82 How Can Daily Mass Benefit You?

The Eucharist is like a Furnace of Love. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is there, offering Himself for our salvation, worshipping God the Father, praying for us, and giving thanks for so many blessings we receive. When we receive Jesus—this Furnace of Love—in communion, our love is increased, and we receive all the graces necessary to become holy. Today we talk about why it will benefit you to attend mass and receive Communion frequently!

81 You Can Visit Mount Calvary Every Week!

Wouldn’t it be great to be able to go to Mount Calvary, in Jerusalem, where our Lord was crucified, and there pray and bring to God all our intentions and concerns? Don’t people pay lots of money to go there? Well, we can do that without going so far. Whenever we attend the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we are as it were, at the foot of the Cross, being present at the very same sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, although offered in an unbloody manner.

Today I’m joined by Brendan Dewan, a recent graduate from Grand Valley State University in Michigan, and currently a FOCUS missionary in Ball State University, Indiana. He recently did a pilgrimage to England. He visited the sites connected to many English Martyrs of the Catholic Church, who were persecuted, tortured and executed by the English government after Henry VIII separated from the Catholic Church and established the Church of England. He shares his reflections and the things he learned in those most holy places, and we talk about St. Thomas More and St. Edmund Campion who were martyrs, and we share some thoughts about St. John Henry Newman.

The North American Martyrs are some of the most amazing men in history. They are 8 Jesuits who gave their lives to bring eternal life to the Hurons and other Native Americans. While they all have incredible stories, Fr. Charles Garnier (1606-1649) is known to have died because he stayed behind with a group of Petuns who were surely going to be massacred. The way he died highlights the importance of baptism and eternal salvation. Listen in to know the details of his life and heroic death!

72 The Sacraments, Wellsprings of Divine Grace

Today I present a general review of what are the Sacraments, and how they are the spiritual link to our Lord Jesus Christ. They are the connection to the source of all graces, which is the mystery of the Cross of our Lord. From the Cross come all the graces we receive, and they reach us through the seven sacraments. These concepts may seem basic, but they’re a key foundation to understanding all the sacramental life of the Church. Listen in to understand why these sacraments are necessary for your salvation!

69 You Are Standing on Holy Ground

Why was the ground Moses was standing on “holy ground”? (Exodus 3:5). Why did Jesus expel the money-changers and people who sold animals from the Temple of Jerusalem? (John 2:13). It’s because “sacred” things, places, times and people are meant to be treated in a different way than things that we have for daily (or “profane”) use. Today we’ll speak about why some things are sacred, and what makes them different!

More info on these sacred signs can be found in the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (note: this is a summary of the “Catechism”), numbers 92, 236-237, 240, 244-246, 254. You can find the Compendium of the Catechism online here: [Link]

68 Sacramentals and Relics – How to Use Them?

Many miracles have happened thanks to touching or praying before the relics of the saints. Powerful signs have taken place by means of a miraculous medal or the Scapular of our Lady of Mount Carmel. 61 Your Name is Written on the Palm of God’s Hands

Why do we say "AMEN" at the end of our prayers? What repercussions does it have for our life? “Amen” expresses both God’s faithfulness and man’s trust in God’s promises. To say “amen” implies believing and trusting in God's fidelity—an attitude that is not commonly found in the world today.

59 Frodo, Gollum and Mount Doom

In today’s episode, starting from a scene taken from the Lord of the Rings, I discuss the Private Judgment which will happen at the end of our lives, eternal salvation, Heaven and Hell. These are truths that Jesus Christ revealed both through parables and through His interactions with different people. Two of the clearest expressions of these truths are the parable of The Rich Man and Lazarus (Lk 16:19-31) and the words of Jesus to the Good Thief while hanging from the Cross (Lk 23:43). Above all, you should always TRUST in the infinite MERCY of God, that, while you’re in this life, He will always forgive all your sins, if you come to Him asking forgiveness with a contrite heart!

58 In Christ We Can Live for Ever – Memento Mori

In today’s episode I talk about the finitude of our temporal life, and the eternity of life in Heaven. “Memento mori” is a phrase that has become a bit of a fad in certain environments today, but it has been around in Christian culture for many centuries. While the secular world sees death in a negative and sometimes pessimistic way, the death and resurrection of Christ has given it a whole new and positive meaning. At the end, I share a simple experience that happened some weeks ago. “In all you do, remember the end of your life, and then you will never sin.” (Sirach 7:36)

57 Jesus Heals Every One of Your Wounds

In today’s episode I talk about how thanks to Jesus Christ and His death on the Cross, we have been reconciled with God. By the action of the Holy Spirit, the Church is given the power to forgive sins (2 Cor 5:18-19). It is through Baptism and the Sacrament of Penance, that our sins are forgiven, and our relationship with God restored. God is willing to forgive any amount of sins, and as grave as they may be, provided we have true repentance. Don’t let sin control your life, instead, let the grace of Christ make you truly free!

- Scriptural quotes on the power to forgive sins given to the Catholic Church: Mk 16:15-16; Jn 20:22-23; 2 Cor 5:18.

- The topics we discussed can be found mostly in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, numbers 976-987, particularly, number 982.

54 Catholics don’t Worship Mary, but we Love and Venerate Her!

In today’s episode I talk about the preeminent member of the Body of Christ, that is the Virgin Mary. She is the Mother of Jesus, and therefore, the “Mother of God”, as confirmed by the Council of Ephesus (A.D. 431). She is always interceding for us, just as she did in the Wedding at Cana (Jn 2:1-12). In Heaven, Jesus continues to love her as He did in this earth, and grants her everything she asks for us, as long as it is for our spiritual good. The Virgin Mary loves us truly as a mother loves her children. Jesus himself, while hanging on the Cross, entrusted her with the task of being a Mother for us (Jn 19::26). As the Vatican Council II says (Lumen Gentium 62): after her ascension into Heaven, she “continues to bring us the gifts of eternal salvation... Therefore, the Blessed Virgin is invoked in the Church under the titles of Advocate, Helper, Benefactress, and Mediatrix [of all graces].” (LG 62)

53 In the Catholic Church, You Are Never Alone

In today’s episode we talk about how the Church Christ is the Mystical Body of Christ, and as members of it, we are all members of Christ and members of one another. There is a communion of goods and a communion of people. There are three stages in the one Catholic Church: those that are in Heaven, those that are in Purgatory, and those that are still on this earth. We consider the example of St. Thomas More, who was strengthened in his last moments by the thought of the saints and angels in Heaven, contemplating his fidelity and cheering him on. We also consider how St. Therese of Lisieux said “I want to spend my heaven in doing good on earth”, reminding us that the saints continue to help us while being in the presence of God.

49 The Church Will Help You Reach Heaven

In today’s episode we talk about the Catholic Church. How it was founded by Jesus Christ and enlivened by the Holy Spirit. We speak about how it has a human element and a divine element. We talk about what IS the Catholic Church; some of the names given it in the New Testament; and some of the symbols used to describe it. We look at the example of St. Edmund Campion, S.J., an English martyr, as a model of fidelity to the Church of Christ in spite of terrible persecution.

48 “In five hours I will see Jesus” - The Story of Jacques Fesch

In today’s episode we talk about how the Holy Spirit worked in the life of a French young man called Jacques Fesch, who lived in France from 1930 to 1957. He was convicted for killing a policeman, and condemned to death at the guillotine. His conversion and spiritual growth in prison were miraculous. The last entry in his journal, before going to his death read “In five hours, I will see Jesus”. I welcome a guest, Fr. John of God, who is a priest of Miles Christi, to discuss the personal experiences of Jacques Fesch, and his relationship with God, the Faith and his immediate family.

Fr. John of God joined Miles Christi in 2006, and was ordained a priest on April 9, 2016. He has been in our community of Michigan as the director of the formation of our students to the priesthood for several years now.

47 The Unsung Hero – The Holy Spirit

In today’s episode we speak about the Holy Spirit, and how He works silently and unnoticeably to vivify the Catholic Church, and to sanctify our souls. He is the unsung hero of our salvation. The Holy Spirit builds, animates and sanctifies the Church. So, as some ancient writers have said, the Holy Spirit is like the soul of the Catholic Church. Besides the Holy Spirit sanctifies the individual soul, first moving it to believe, to embrace the faith, and then, little by little, to grow in Faith, Hope and Love, leading it to bear fruits of holiness. The Holy Spirit is the master of prayer, because He teaches us to pray as we ought (Romans 8:26).

Some Bible texts that we quote in this episode: The Mystery of the Annunciation (Lk 3:22). The Baptism of Jesus (Lk 3:22). The Holy Spirit similar to the force that makes the crop grow in the field (Mark 4:26-33). The wind blows where it wills (John 3:8). At the last Supper (John 14:16-17). How Jesus promised to send the H.S. (Jn 14:26). Baptize in the Name of the Trinity (Mt 28:19). The coming of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit teaches us how to pray and aids us in our weakness (Romans 8:26).

Numbers from the Catechism: #731-747

Here is a great prayer to the Holy Spirit:

“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Let us pray: O God, who instructed the hearts of Thy faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us by that same Spirit, to be truly wise, and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

46 How can I become a SAINT - The Holy Spirit at work

In today’s episode we speak about the Holy Spirit, the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, and how it is thanks to Him that we can be saints! We discuss how He was revealed in the Scriptures, the Names by which He is referred to, the symbols used to express His different qualities, and finally we will briefly talk about how He works in the Church and in the individual soul. I will talk about the life of Bl. Carlo Acutis and St. Francis Xavier, as examples of how the Holy Spirit can work miracles of conversion in people that were just as human as you and me.

Some of the texts we quote in this episode: How the Holy Spirit [H.S.] was present in the story of the Creation (Genesis 1:1). The Theophany of Mamre (Genesis 18:1-15). How the H.S. worked through king Saul (1 Sam 10:10). The Mystery of the Annunciation (Lk 3:22). The Baptism of Jesus (Lk 3:22). How Jesus promised to send the H.S. (Jn 14:26). The coming of the H.S. on Pentecost (Acts 1:8). The H.S. teaches us how to pray (Romans 8:26).

Here is the prayer I shared during the episode:

“Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and enkindle in them the fire of Thy love. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O God, who instructed the hearts of Thy faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant us by that same Spirit, to be truly wise, and ever to rejoice in His consolation. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

43 Q & A – Three Reasons Why to Be Catholic

In today’s episode I answer a question of one of our listeners. Rian, a freshman in college, from Chicago asks me which three reasons he could argue in favor of the Catholic Church being the true Church of Christ. In summary, the reasons are these: (1) the Church of Christ must be one, in the sense of not being “many”, and also one, in the sense that it must not be clearly divided in doctrinal sections or factions. (2) the Church of Christ today must be a continuation of the Church of Christ from Apostolic times. This is guaranteed by the Apostolic Succession, and the uninterrupted line of successors of St. Peter up until today. That is, there is an uninterrupted succession of Bishops of Rome (the Pope), until Pope Francis. (3) The Church of Christ today must have essentially the same teachings of the Church of Christ in Apostolic Times, and thus be the maintain and teach the same teachings from Christ. All these reasons point toward the Catholic Church, under the Successor of St. Peter, Pope Francis, as the true Church of Christ.

I add some useful recommendations for when you speak to non-Catholics with the hope of bringing them closer to Jesus Christ and His True Church.

42 Trust God as the New Year Approaches

In today’s episode I welcome Fr. Matthew Maxwell to speak about the end of the year 2021, and the beginning of a New Year! We discuss the importance of being aware of how time passes by. In fact, Human History is a process that progresses in a lineal way, from the Creation of the World, the creation of Adam and Eve, until the Second Coming of the Lord and the Final Judgment of the Nations, as we read in Matthew chapter 25. We talk about how important it is to have good solid resolutions to carry out in the upcoming year, that will help us to grow in holiness. We discuss how important it is to be patient with ourselves, while trusting in the maternal intercession of the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, whose feast day the Church places on January 1st.

We reference the oldest known prayer in honor to our Lady, the “Sub Tuum Praesidium” (“We fly to thy patronage”), which we described more in detail in our Episode 24. In that episode, as well, I placed a recording of the Gregorian chant version of that prayer, sung by our Miles Christi seminarians. 41 Christmas - Jesus Shows God‘s Infinite Love For Us

In today’s episode I welcome Fr. Matthew Maxwell to speak about the celebration of Christmas. The liturgical Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord helps us center our life in Jesus Christ, and the fact that God becomes man to save us. The Catholic Church wants to remind us that the WORD of God became Man and was born from the Virgin Mary, in order to die for us on the Cross, save us from death and sin, and give us the opportunity to enter Heaven and share in the divine nature (2 Peter 1:4).

As St. Paul clearly states it in his letter to the Galatians 4:4-5, “When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to ransom those under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.”

We discuss the importance and value of the Christmas Season, and some practical ways to benefit spiritually of this important feast.

40 The Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano

In today’s episode, after speaking a little about the importance of the season of Advent, and some helpful Advent practices, we’ll speak about the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano. Only around 41% of Catholics believe that the Eucharist is truly the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ. After the Consecration at Mass, there is no longer bread or wine, but the Being of Jesus Christ himself, true God and true man. To confirm and strengthen our faith in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar, God has given the Church several Eucharistic Miracles. These are miraculous events in which the reality of the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ is made physically evident. One of the most amazing eucharistic miracles is the one that happened in the 8th century, in the town of Lanciano, Italy. I will be welcoming a college student who will share with us some insights and some of his experiences about the Eucharistic Miracle of Lanciano. Coley is a junior in college, studying in Kansas. He’s had the awesome opportunity to study abroad for a semester, in Florence, Italy. Among other places, he visited Lanciano, which is a small town on the Adriatic coast of Italy, due east from Rome. Don’t miss his amazing story!

39 St. Aloysius Gonzaga and The Final Judgment

In today’s episode we’ll speak about the Second Coming of the Lord and the Final Judgment, drawing an example from the life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga.

Before Ascending into Heaven, the Lord promised his Apostles (and us through them) two things: First, that He would not leave them alone; and second, that He would return one day with power, in a glorious way. He fulfilled the first promise by remaining with us in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar (where he stays “substantially” present), and by sending the Holy Spirit on the whole Church in Pentecost. He will fulfill the second promise at the end of times, at the end of the world.

At His Second Coming, the dead will rise, and Jesus will judge all humanity (Mt 25: 31-46). The Final Judgment will be a ratification of the particular judgment (which will happen at the end of our life), and it will take place at the sight of the whole world.

After these considerations, I discuss some spiritual attitudes that we should have when thinking about these things. I also look at a great example in the life of St. Aloysius Gonzaga, who lived from 1568 to 1591, and died as a result of a plague. May St. Aloysius Gonzaga be an example for all of us when facing the end of our own personal life!

38 Q & A – Dryness in Prayer

In today’s episode I answer a question of one of our listeners, about experiencing dryness in prayer, difficulty to pay attention, and a wandering mind. I share the example of St. Teresa of Avila, who also suffered something similar. I give some foundations to understand the spiritual realities of consolation and desolation, using the principles of St. Ignatius of Loyola in his Rules for Discernment of Spirits. I also give some simple recommendations on what to do in desolation. Among other things, I recommend examining one’s conscience and revisiting the way how to do a time of prayer or meditation (see the article in the show notes below).

36 Jesus Christ is Truly Alive!

In today’s episode, after sharing the amazing example of the martyrdom of the seven Maccabee brothers, we will talk about the Resurrection of Christ, about the importance and meaning it has in our Faith, what it means in itself, how it was a real, historical event—and not just an illusion of some pious people—, and some of the characteristics of Christ’s risen body.

- Here are some of the quotes we referenced during this episode: the story of the Jewish mother and the martyrdom of her seven sons (2 Maccabees 7); Job’s faith on the Resurrection (Job 19:25-27); Jesus rises the son of a widow (Lk 7:11-17); Lazarus is risen from the tomb (John 11:38-44); St. Paul about the centrality of the Resurrection in the Christian Faith (1 Cor 15:3-4; 1 Cor 15:14, 17); Apparitions of Jesus (Jn 20:11-18; Jn 20:19-23); Jesus with a body of flesh and blood (Lk 24:39).

35 Interview - Chiara Corbella Petrillo’s Story

Today we are joined by Anne, a student at the University of Michigan. She’s a junior, and has a part-time job as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).

We share the story of Chiara Petrillo, who was born in Rome, in 1984, and died on June 13, 2012, at the age of 28.

After marrying Enrico, she had three children—Maria, Davide and Francesco—, two of which died shortly after they were born. The third one, Francesco, lived, but Chiara had been diagnosed with cancer and died one year after his birth. During that last year of her life, she was able to meet Pope Benedict XVI and tell him her story.

Chiara is not yet a canonized saint, but she is in the process of being considered for canonization. She’s an amazing example of a holy woman, and a great inspiration to many in the world.

We talk about her faith in God, her trust in Divine Providence, her love for the life of a child in the womb, and her absolute denial to perform an abortion on her three children. We also speak about one of her spiritual legacy, especially through a phrase she used as an inspiration, “piccoli passi possibili”, which means “small possible steps.” In our language we could say “baby steps!”, or “one step at a time.”

Below you will find a prayer to ask for graces through her intercession.

PRAYER to ask for graces through Chiara’s intercession:

God, you are infinitely good

and have, in your great mercy,

chosen Chiara as your beloved daughter.

With wisdom you have guided her

on the path marked out by the Gospel,

and taught her, through Mary,

to treasure Your Son with a

passionate love in her heart

and to follow Him as bride and mother

with unshakeable trust in the way of the cross.

May the light of the Gospel of Christ,

which shines in Chiara,

rekindle the confidence of eternal life

in the hearts of our brothers and sisters.

Through her intercession grant us the grace

that we are asking You and, if it is Your will,

let Chiara be proclaimed blessed,

for our good and for the glory of Your Name.

Through Christ our Lord.

Amen. (With ecclesiastical approval)

34 Jesus Never Did Me Any Wrong - And He Died For Me

In today’s episode we’ll speak about how the death of Christ was a sacrifice which our Lord offered for you and for your salvation, so you could enter Heaven and spend the rest of eternity with God. The Holy Mass is the very same Sacrifice of the Cross, but offered in an unbloody manner. We consider the ultimate purpose (the four “ends”) of the Sacrifice of the Cross and the Sacrifice of the Mass. Finally, we look at some ways to benefit spiritually from the Passion and Death of our Lord, and how to unite our sufferings with His. We’ll consider the amazing witness of St. Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, that led to his martyrdom.

- Link to the Acts of the Martyrdom of St. Polycarp: https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/0102.htm

- The Sacrifice of the Mass and the Sacrifice of the Cross are the SAME sacrifice, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (numbers 1362 through 1367). Here is n. 1366-1367:

“1366 The Eucharist is thus a sacrifice because it re-presents (makes present) the sacrifice of the cross, because it is its memorial and because it applies its fruit.”

“1367 The sacrifice of Christ and the sacrifice of the Eucharist are one single sacrifice: "The victim is one and the same: the same now offers through the ministry of priests, who then offered himself on the cross; only the manner of offering is different." "And since in this divine sacrifice which is celebrated in the Mass, the same Christ who offered himself once in a bloody manner on the altar of the cross is contained and offered in an unbloody manner... this sacrifice is truly propitiatory.” [Council of Trent (1562 A.D.), Doctrina de SS. 33 Jesus Loves You to Death – It’s a FACT

In today’s episode we’ll speak about how the life of Christ was crowned by his Passion and Death on the Cross. This was a real, historical event, which can be proven not only by the witness of many early Christian writers, but by other non-Christian historians (like Flavius Josephus [Jewish historian born 37 A.D.] and Tacitus [Roman historian and politician born c. 56 A.D.]) as well. We’ll consider a step in the conversion of St Teresa of Avila.

30 Jesus Christ, A Man on a Mission

In today’s episode we’ll speak about some general aspects and mysteries of the Life of Christ as it is presented by the Gospels. I share the story of my visit to the Holy Land, how I celebrated Mass in the place of the Crucifixion and in the place of the Resurrection of our Lord. In speaking about the main general aspects of the Life of Christ, I will highlight how Jesus had a clear mission given by God the Father, how He came to save us all from sin, how He established the Catholic Church, how He taught us all the truths that are necessary for us to obtain our eternal salvation, and how He calls YOU to continue His mission on this earth.

29 Jesus Christ is My Hero

In this episode we talk about how we are naturally inclined to look up to certain people, and have them as our role models. We also consider how God, in taking our human nature, intended to become in Christ our most perfect role model, our ideal man, our hero. He lived like us, he suffered like us, and even more than us. He wanted to be close to us, and share our life, so we could look up to Him and see in Him everything we should aim for.

26 The Virgin Mary, Mother of God and our Mother

In this episode I talk about how the fact that the Virgin Mary is indeed the Mother of God, is at the center of our Marian devotion. We also speak about the three other Marian dogmas, all of which form like the four columns of the theological doctrine related to the Virgin Mary.

Mary carried in her womb the Word made Flesh, Jesus Christ. And just as we say that our mother is “our mother” and not just “the mother of our body, but not of our soul”, even though our soul comes directly from God, in a similar way, although the Divinity existed before the Virgin Mary, because she carried Jesus in her womb, because she provided the living cells from which his body was made, we say that she is the Mother of Jesus, and therefore, the Mother of God.

The Catechism explains (#485): “The mission of the Holy Spirit is always conjoined and ordered to that of the Son. The Holy Spirit, (…) is sent to sanctify the womb of the Virgin Mary and divinely fecundate it, causing her to conceive the eternal Son of the Father in a humanity drawn from her own.”

That Mary is the Mother of God was always believed by the Church from the time of the Apostles. However, it was defined, that is stated irrevocably as a truth revealed by God, at the Council of Ephesus on the year 431 A.D.

We speak about the other privileges that God granted to the one who would become His Mother. God gave her the grace to be conceived without Original Sin in the womb of her mother St. Anne (the dogma of the “Immaculate Conception”, defined in 1854 by Pope Blessed Pius IX). God gave her the grace to be Ever Virgin, that is, she remained a virgin before, during and ever after the birth of Jesus Christ. And finally, after completing the course of her life in this world, she was assumed, by the power of God, body and soul into the Glory of Heaven (the dogma of the “Assumption of Mary”, defined in 1950, by Pope Pius XII).

The theological tradition of the Church has also called her the Mediatrix of all Graces (because God grants all the graces through the hands of the Virgin Mary), and Co-Redemptrix with Christ (because she, being only a human being, participated and cooperated as no one else in the Redemption of man performed by Jesus Christ).

- All the things we discussed in this episode can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #484 through #511.

- About the archaeological discovery of the inscription “Ave Maria” on a wall from before the V Century, in the archaeological site of the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. It shows that the devotion to the Virgin Mary existed in that specific location in Nazareth, and is dated from before the Council of Ephesus (431 A.D.): https://www.terrasanctamuseum.org/en/%CF%87%CE%B1%CE%AF%CF%81%CE%B5-%CE%BC%CE%B1%CF%81%CE%AF%CE%B1-ave-maria-the-origins-of-the-marian-cult/

- The “Sub Tuum Praesidium” is the oldest Marian prayer of which we have a written record. An Egyptian papyrus was found in 1917 that was dated back to 250-280 A.D. https://www.newliturgicalmovement.org/2011/02/sub-tuum-praesidium.html#.YTVrbp1Kg2w

25 Jesus, in the Sacred Heart, Loves You With a Human Love

In this episode I talk about How our Lord Jesus Christ, because He has a truly and complete Human nature, has TWO natures (one Divine and one Human) and therefore has TWO intellects and TWO wills. This is how you can explain certain expressions from the Gospels that otherwise would be confusing (like: Luke 2:52 [Jesus advanced [in] wisdom and age and favor before God and man.]; John 11:35 [deeply moved and troubled, and “Jesus wept”]; Mark 15:34 [“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.”], and many others). As a result, He loves us with a real, emotional love.

This is why you should also return His human, emotional love, with a sincere, personal love as well. He’s expecting that from you, and He’s waiting for you in the Blessed Sacrament!

All the topics we spoke about today can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, #461-483

Here are some of the words of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, in the apparitions that took place from the year 1673 to 1675

“My Divine Heart is so inflamed with love for men, and for you in particular that, being unable any longer to contain within Itself the flames of Its burning Charity, it must needs spread them abroad by your means, and manifest Itself to them (mankind) in order to enrich them with the precious graces of sanctification and salvation necessary to withdraw them from the abyss of perdition.” (…)

On one occasion, while the Blessed Sacrament was exposed, (…) Jesus Christ, my sweet Master, presented Himself to me (…). Flames issued from every part of His Sacred Humanity, especially from (…) His most loving and most amiable Heart, which was the living source of these flames. (…) He showed me to what an excess He had loved men, from whom He received only ingratitude and contempt. "I feel this more than all that I suffered during My Passion. If only they would make Me some return for My Love, I should think but little of all I have done for them and would wish, were it possible, to suffer still more. But the sole return they make (…) is to reject Me and treat Me with coldness. Do you at least console Me by supplying for their ingratitude..."

"Behold the Heart which has so loved men that it has spared nothing, even to exhausting and consuming Itself, in order to testify Its love; and in return, I receive from the greater part only ingratitude, by their irreverence and sacrilege, and by the coldness and contempt they have for Me in this Sacrament of Love. But what I feel most keenly is that it is hearts which are consecrated to Me, that treat Me thus. Therefore, I ask of you that the Friday after the Octave of Corpus Christi be set apart for a special Feast to honor My Heart, by communicating on that day, and making reparation to It by a solemn act, in order to make amends for the indignities which It has received during the time It has been exposed on the altars. I promise you that My Heart shall expand Itself to shed in abundance the influence of Its Divine Love upon those who shall thus honor It, and cause It to be honored."

24 Jesus Christ is True God and True Man

In this episode I talk about how Jesus Christ is true God and true Man. That is, two natures, one Divine and one human, united in the One Divine Person of the Son. This is what is called the “hypostatic union”. The Divine nature is perfect and complete, and in that sense, Jesus Christ is perfect God. On the other hand, the human nature is perfect and complete, and in that sense, Jesus Christ is perfect man. However, both natures are united on one only Divine Person, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, the Son. There is NO HUMAN PERSON in Jesus Christ. I speak about the heresies of Gnostic Docetism, Arianism and Nestorianism. Finally, I explain how the Virgin Mary is properly called the Mother of God, and this was defined by the council of Ephesus in the year 431 A.D. I end the episode considering the most ancient recorded prayer to the Virgin Mary, the “Sub Tuum Praesidium” or “We fly to thy protection”. And at the end, I play a recording of this Marian Hymn sung by our Miles Christi seminarians.

All these concepts can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, numbers 461-478.

Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer text in English (We fly to Thy Patronage):

We fly to thy protection, O holy Mother of God. Despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer in Latin:

Sub tuum praesidium confugimus, Sancta Dei Genetrix. Nostras deprecationes ne despicias in necessitatibus, sed a periculis cunctis libera nos semper, Virgo gloriosa et benedicta.

23 Consecrating One’s Life to God is Awesome - Interview

In this episode I invite Jenny Stofka to speak about Consecrated Life in Miles Christi. She shares her experience in college, and how she felt called to consecrate her life to Jesus Christ through the vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience.

I also welcome Kristina, who recently graduated from Florida International University and is now a nurse in Tampa, Florida. She asks some interesting questions about discernment and Religious Life—questions I’m sure you’ll be interested in knowing the answer to.

I share how the Catechism says, in #944 that Consecrated Life "is characterized by the public profession of the evangelical counsels of Poverty, Chastity, and Obedience, in a stable state of life recognized by the Church". So, while through BAPTISM all the Christian faithful are called to holiness and—in a sense—consecrated to Jesus Christ, through the Religious Vows, we add a special commitment, a PUBLIC commitment to seek out the perfection of those promises made in Baptism. Those who consecrate their lives commit to live out the “Evangelical Counsels” of Christ in their life, becoming a WITNESS to the Gospel in the world.

The Church says that Religious and Consecrated Life is "a stable form of living by which the faithful, following Christ more closely (…), are totally dedicated to God who is loved most of all, so that, having been dedicated [themselves] by a new and special title to his honor, to the building up of the Church, and to the salvation of the world, they strive for the perfection of charity [that is, holiness]." 22 Would you give your life for someone else?

In this episode we talk about how God, in His infinite Mercy, came to save us and open the path to Heaven for us. JESUS gave His LIFE for you and me. I share why He had to offer a sacrifice of infinite value for our sins. He also wanted us to know God’s love for us, become a role model of holiness for everyone, make us partakers of the Divine nature, and teach us the truth about God, man, and the true and only path to salvation.

All this can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, numbers 456 through 460.

I also share a little bit about the retreat we will be doing as a Community with the Priests and Brothers in Michigan, and also about the days of vacation we will be taking in Northern Michigan! And this cannot be found in the Catechism! :D

21 The Spiritual Exercises – A Great Retreat for College Students

This week our Miles Christi religious community in Michigan will be doing its week-long annual retreat in an atmosphere of silence. We do it according to the Spiritual Exercises written by St. Ignatius of Loyola.

My good friend Matthew, who graduated from UCLA and is now in his third year as a FOCUS missionary, discusses with me his experience in doing the Spiritual Exercises right out of college, and he says why every college student who wants to grow spiritually should do them!

St. Ignatius lived from 1491 to 1556, and is the Founder of the Society of Jesus. His feast day is July 31. In Miles Christi, we consider him our “master of the spiritual life”, which means that we use his writings and principles as inspiration for our spirituality.

The book of the Spiritual Exercises is a guide to do a retreat. The retreat can be from a three-day-weekend long, to thirty days. The book has spiritual notes and recommendations, methods of prayer, ways to examine one’s conscience, outlines to meditate on the mysteries of the life of Christ, and above all, A STRUCTURE for a RETREAT divided in four periods of time (which St. Ignatius calls “weeks”), with suggested meditations for each day.

The Spiritual Exercises will help you deepen the knowledge of the purpose of your life, help you eradicate sin from your life, get to know Jesus better, and by knowing Him, love Him and follow Him!

Here are some of the documents we speak about in our conversation:

- Encyclical “MENS NOSTRA” of Pope Pius XI, endorsing the Spiritual Exercises and encouraging people to practice them. https://www.vatican.va/content/pius-xi/en/encyclicals/documents/hf_p-xi_enc_19291220_mens-nostra.html

20 “Not for a million dollars” – At the Name of Jesus every knee must bend

In this episode we talk about how, from her own words we learn that Mother Teresa of Calcutta would not have done what she did for many poor people even if they had given her a million dollars. However, she did it for Jesus Christ, the Son of God made man. In John 1:1-3 we read “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Word is the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, God, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit. This Word took flesh, a human nature, in the most pure womb of the Virgin Mary.

We address how the heresy of Arianism threatened to change the faith of the Catholic Church, but thanks to St. Athanasius and many others who suffered greatly to defend the Divinity of Jesus, the true faith was preserved.

This is why “at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord.” (Phil 2:10-11)

19 Adam Sinned and Brought Death into the World

In this episode I talk about how God created the world to be a place where Adam and Eve and their descendants could live in peace and harmony, with God, with each other, and with the world around them. However, through Original Sin, Adam disregarded the law of God, and rebelled against Him. This Original Sin separated man from God, and brought disorder into creation. The book of Genesis in its first chapters, presents historical truths, using a symbolic language.

All the ideas discussed in this Episode can be found described more in depth in the Catechism of the Catholic Church #390, 396-412.

The Catechism in #390 says: “The account of the fall in Genesis 3 uses figurative language, but affirms a primeval event, a deed that took place at the beginning of the history of man. Revelation gives us the certainty of faith that the whole of human history is marked by the original fault freely committed by our first parents.”

In Adam, we all sinned. “Therefore, just as through one person sin entered the world, and through sin, death, and thus death came to all, inasmuch as all sinned.” (Rom 5:12)

This is why we are all conceived in the state of sin, without the grace of God: “Behold, I was born in guilt, in sin my mother conceived me.” (Psalm 51:7)

it is necessary to recognize that we are inclined to evil from conception. That we are separated from God from the first moment of our existence.

This is why it is necessary to baptize children soon after they are born, to allow them the gift of being united to God and in his grace, which opens for them the gates of Heaven.

We look at the different consequences of that sin.

And finally, we will look into the promise that God made of sending a Redeemer to save us from that state: “if by that one person’s transgression the many died, how much more did the grace of God and the gracious gift of the one Person, Jesus Christ, overflow for the many.” (Rom 5:15)

Thanks to the Death of Jesus Christ on the Cross, we are all redeemed, and granted the possibility of being cleansed from sin and entering Heaven. Of course, we still have to apply the merits of His death on us through baptism, and live according to the Gospel to be saved.

“The Son of God was revealed to destroy the works of the devil.” (1 Jn 3:8)

Thanks be to Jesus Christ, the evil of sin does not, will not have the FINAL WORD. Jesus Christ is victorious over Satan, sin and death.

18 God Creator of the World, Man, Angels and Demons

In this episode I talk about the fact that God is the ultimate cause for the existence of the entire world, man and all the spiritual beings, which we commonly call Angels. He also created those angels that would eventually fall from their state of grace through sin, and separate themselves from God—the demons. I mention how the first eleven chapters of the Book of Genesis are not supposed to be interpreted literally, especially the fact that the world was created in seven days. So, while the Catholic Church teaches that God created the world, this does not mean that she opposes any verified, proven scientific explanation for the manner in which God created the world, or the manner the world came into being.

I also share how God creates each individual soul, giving each human being its unique dignity and sacredness. Quoting Genesis 1:27, I share how God created mankind in his image; in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Finally, I talk about the nature of the Angels and the existence of the devil and his followers.

I quote the following sections of the Bible: 2 Kings 6:10-25; Col 1:16; Daniel 10:13; Rev 12:7; Luke 1 (St. Gabriel announcing the Births of John the Baptist and Jesus); Genesis 19 (angels defending Lot against the inhabitants of Sodom); Genesis 22:12 (the sacrifice of Isaac); Luke 2:14 (Angels and the Shepherds); Mt 4:1 (temptations in the desert), etc. I finally speak about the Guardian Angel (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 336).

I speak about St. John Bosco (Don Bosco) and “Grigio”, the hound that protected him from his enemies. I also share about the dream (told in “The Story of a Soul”) that St. Therese of Lisieux had about two little demons who were afraid of her even if she was a child, because she was in the Grace of God.

The devotion to Jesus in the Eucharist, devotion to the Virgin Mary (particularly, the Holy Rosary), and the devotion to St. Michael the Archangel are most powerful ways to defend ourselves against Satan.

Pray the prayer to St. Michael frequently!

“St Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.”

16 There is Only One God

In this episode I discuss how as Catholics, our faith centers around the belief in the existence of ONLY ONE GOD. We will address some of His characteristics. We could know some of these characteristics through reason alone, but they were also positively revealed by Him: for example, that he IS, that He is Infinite, all-powerful and creator of all things. We will also look at the consequences of this belief, particularly, how we owe him WORSHIP and obedience, and we should depend completely on His Divine Providence.

“Since creatures have received everything they are and have from God, only God in himself is the fullness of being and of every perfection. God is “He who is” without origin and without end.” [CCCC #39]

God is the creator of every reality outside of Himself, both material and spiritual. He has created by a free choice of his will, neither out of necessity, nor out of a kind of “natural” overflowing of His Being. Finally, this world did not come to be by a blind “chance”.

When God created everything, He used neither any “pre-existing matter” nor “anything at all” from which He made everything—not even a part of Himself. On the contrary, He created everything out of nothing (“ex nihilo”). “We believe that God needs no pre-existent thing or any help in order to create, nor is creation any sort of necessary emanation from the divine substance. God creates freely “out of nothing”.” (Catechism 296) See 2 Macabees 7:21-28.

Moreover, God continues to maintain the world in its being, He is holding us in the palm of his hand (see Isaiah 49:16).

We speak about the consequences of these truths for our lives:

(1) We should recognize his infinite GREATNESS and our “nothingness”. (2) We should learn to ADORE God and obey Him. (3) We should live with an attitude of THANKSGIVING for everything we have and for everything He does for us. (4) We should also learn to value and defend the intrinsic DIGNITY OF ALL MEN, created in the image and likeness of God. (5) We should make good use of all created things, using them for the glory of God and our Salvation. (6) We should depend entirely on his DIVINE PROVIDENCE, entrusting ourselves to Him like a child in the arms of his mother, even in adversity.

Spanish version of St. Teresa’s Poem: “Nada te turbe, nada te espante todo se pasa, Dios no se muda, la paciencia todo lo alcanza, quien a Dios tiene nada le falta solo Dios basta.” (Poemas, 30)

Toward the end, I quote Psalm 91:1-5.

15 Catholic Symbols of Faith

In this episode I will begin the presentation of the Catholic Creed, that is, a summary of the Truths of Faith that we profess as Catholics. This particular episode was recorded away from home, in Chicago, IL…! I am joined by Fr. Matthew Maxwell, to discuss some of the main “professions of faith” that were put forth through the centuries. We will look at the purpose of these written professions or summaries of our Faith, and then we will look at some of the most important ones that have been handed down to us from the very beginnings. We will mention some of the “professions” that appear in the Old and New Testament (Deut 26:5-9; Mt 28:19; 1 Co 15:3-5; 1 Tim 3:15-16; Philippians 2:6-11). After that, we will mention the “Regula Fidei” and the “Old Roman Creed”, the structure of which could be traced to the times of the Apostles themselves. Then we will look at the forms of the Creed that have been kept and used by the Catholic Church from very early centuries until today, particularly, the Apostles’ Creed, and the Nicene Creed (also called Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed).

Here is the approximate text of the “Old Roman Creed”. This text is taken from the Catholic Encyclopedia. There are other ‘forms’ of the text, that include some additions, and that were found in different parts of the Church in later years. You can read the whole article about the Old Roman Creed here: https://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01629a.htm

Old Roman Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; Who was born of (Latin: “de”) the Holy Spirit, and of (Latin: “ex”) the Virgin Mary; crucified under Pontius Pilate and buried; The third day he rose again from the dead, He ascended into heaven, sits on the right hand of the Father, From thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. And in the Holy Spirit, The holy Church, the Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body.

This Old Roman Creed is one of the earliest written versions that are extant, and, because in the first centuries of Christianity this Creed was not meant to be put into writing but only recited, it is very reasonable to think that its origin—at least in the main points and ideas—can be traced back to the Apostles Peter and Paul, who lived and died in Rome.

From this Old Roman Creed later came the “Apostles’ Creed”. And eventually, this one was used as a basis for the Nicene Creed.

The Apostles’ Creed can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/rosaries/prayers-of-the-rosary

The Nicene Creed can be found here: https://www.usccb.org/beliefs-and-teachings/what-we-believe

14 Pier Giorgio Frassati and Kevin Becker’s Cure

In this episode I invite a guest, Kevin Becker, who shares how he got to know about Pier Giorgio Frassati. He tells the story of how, in 2011, he severely injured his head (multiple fractures in his skull and severe brain inflammation) falling from the roof of his house while a junior in college. He remained several days in a coma, and the doctors started to fear the worst. During that time, his family started praying through the intercession of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati for his cure. Soon after he started to recover. His recovery was so fast, that the following semester he was cleared to play sports in college. He later related how during his coma, he repeatedly dreamed about seeing a young man who introduced himself as Giorgio—the name Frassati commonly used.

This amazing cure is being investigated in the Vatican to see if it can be considered a miracle obtained through the intercession of Bl. Pier Giorgio Frassati.

13 Faith Impact – Pier Giorgio Frassati

In this episode we discuss the impact faith can have in a person’s life, and in the life of the whole Church. I invite a guest, Matthew Zahn, to talk about the life of Pier Giorgio Frassati, his virtues and some aspects of his spiritual life.

Born in Turin, Italy on April 6, 1901, Pier Giorgio had a great faith from his youth. Two main pillars of his spiritual life were a great devotion to the Holy Eucharist, and a great love and veneration for the Blessed Virgin Mary. He wanted to devote his life to bring Christ to those around him, particularly the poor. While he came from a wealthy family, Pier Giorgio lived a simple life, with great detachment (spiritual poverty) and whatever he could, he gave it to the poor.

He loved the outdoors, particularly, mountain climbing, and would invite his friends first to go on outings, and then to pray in church.

At the age of 24, just before his planned graduation from college, he contracted poliomyelitis, and died soon after, on July 4, 1925.

We also talk about two miracles performed through his intercession.

12 The Catholic Meaning of Faith (2) – Some Characteristics

Some characteristics of our Catholic Faith: In this episode we address some consequences that are derived from a correct, Catholic understanding of what FAITH is. Faith is an act of our intelligence, moved by our will and by the Grace of God, by which we accept all the truths that God has revealed and the Church teaches as revealed by God (see St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologica II-II, 2, 9; and 1st Vatican Council, Dei Filius 3). The main reason why we accept these truths is because we accept the witness and authority of God, who cannot be deceived nor deceive us.

As a consequence, it is clear that our faith is a gift of God; besides, the act of faith should be freely made; it should be “certain”; it should be complete—or integral—, without “picking and choosing” some truths and leaving out others. If both are correctly understood there shouldn’t be an opposition between faith and science, or between faith and reason. Faith is universal, in other words, it is for all men, and it should be embraced by all men. It is all-encompassing, in the sense that there should be no area of our life that is not affected by our faith.

All the concepts discussed can be found in the Catechism, #142-184.

At the end, we discuss what to do to persevere in your faith, and we look at the amazing story of John Henry Newman’s conversion to Catholicism. He is a canonized saint who converted from Anglicanism.

St. John Newman said, “This I am sure of, that nothing but a simple, direct call of duty is a warrant for any one leaving our [Anglican] Church… The simple question is: Can I (it is personal, not whether “another”, but can I) be saved in the English Church? Am I in safety, were I to die tonight? Is it a mortal sin in me, not joining another communion? (Apologia, 208)

LEAD, KINDLY LIGHT (poem)

Lead, Kindly Light, amidst th’encircling gloom, Lead Thou me on! The night is dark, and I am far from home, Lead Thou me on! Keep Thou my feet; I do not ask to see The distant scene; one step enough for me.

I was not ever thus, nor prayed that Thou Shouldst lead me on; I loved to choose and see my path; but now Lead Thou me on! I loved the garish day, and, spite of fears, Pride ruled my will. Remember not past years!

So long Thy power hath blest me, sure it still Will lead me on. O’er moor and fen, o’er crag and torrent, till The night is gone, And with the morn those angel faces smile, Which I have loved long since, and lost awhile!

Meantime, along the narrow, rugged path, Thyself hast trod, Lead, Saviour, lead me home in childlike faith, Home to my God. To rest forever after earthly strife In the calm light of everlasting life.

Poem by St. John Henry Newman (1801-1890)

11 The Catholic meaning of “Faith” (1)

What does it mean to have Faith? What is the Catholic meaning of Faith? There are so many ways in which the word “faith” is used that it can almost mean anything you want!

The Catholic meaning of faith can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church #150.

“Faith is the supernatural virtue which is necessary for salvation. It is a free gift of God and is accessible to all who humbly seek it. The act of faith is a human act, that is, an act of the intellect of a person - prompted by the will moved by God - who freely assents to divine truth.” (Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church #28).

As St. Thomas Aquinas says it in his Summa Theologica: “Believing is an act of the intellect assenting to the divine truth by command of the will moved by God through grace.” (S.Th. II-II, 2, 9. You can also see the Vatican Council I, Dei Filius #3.)

All the concepts discussed can be found in the Catechism, #142-184.

The main reason why we believe: we believe in the truths revealed by God through Jesus Christ, because Jesus Christ is God. (Catechism #156).

Because of this, it is reasonable to look for signs that indicate that indeed, it is God that has spoken through Jesus Christ. We call these signs “motives of credibility” or “reasons to believe”. (fulfillment of prophecies of the Old and New Testament; the miracles performed by Christ and the saints, the holiness of the teachings of Christ and the Church; the growth of the Catholic Church throughout the world; the permanence of the Catholic Church throughout the centuries (in spite of persecutions and interior heresies); and the holiness of a multitude of saints.

We discuss the life and the heroic martyrdom of St. Polycarp, in the year 155, who was the Bishop of Smyrna and direct disciple of St. John the Evangelist, and how his perseverance in the face of such terrible torments was a witness to his heroic faith in Jesus Christ, whom he received through the witness of St. John the Evangelist.

10 Conversion, Dating and Marriage Interview: Tim and Peri Rose Force

Join our conversation with Tim and Peri Rose Force, who have dedicated the last four years to serve the Catholic student community at “The Grotto” (that is, the Catholic Newman Center at Hillsdale, MI, part of the local St. Anthony Parish).

We talk about Peri Rose’s conversion from the Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS, a.k.a., Mormons) to Catholicism, how they met and decided to get married.

We discuss the unity and indissolubility of marriage as established by God between a man and a woman, and elevated by Christ to the dignity of a Sacrament. This sacrament provide God’s graces and help, and it is like a safeguard of the family, society, the husband-and-wife relationship, and the well-being of the children. These are all benefits are unavailable when there is simple cohabitation or “living as a couple”. We address the benefits of a sacramental union in God versus the hook-up culture model.

You can read more about the sacrament of Marriage in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, numbers 1601 through 1666

Tim and Peri Rose have been ministering to college students at “The Grotto” in a unique way for the past four years, and share their experience of God’s grace, vulnerability and community life.

Finally, we ask them some questions so that they can share their wisdom about marriage and college life with our young adult audience, especially those still in college.

Recorded on site, with a “mobile studio” in the Force’s kitchen!

09 Scripture, Tradition and The Magisterium (2) – Fr. Maxwell, MC

In this episode we welcome Fr. Matthew Maxwell. We will discuss in detail the meaning of the Sacred Tradition of the Church, the Sacred Scriptures, and the role of the Magisterium of the Church.

Apostolic Tradition: Jesus Christ did not write a “text book” to transmit the revealed truths to all men, but instead established His Church on St. Peter and the Apostles, and entrusted to them the responsibility of passing on all those truths (the “Deposit of Faith”) to all generations through history, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit. Sacred Tradition is the transmission of the Deposit of Faith by the Apostles to their successors “by the spoken word of their preaching, by the example they gave, by the institutions they established, what they themselves had received.” (Dei Verbum 7)

Sacred Scripture: Some of the Apostles, and their immediate disciples put into writing—under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit—what they gathered from the life and teaching of Jesus Christ and the Apostles. Sacred Scripture contains and transmits infallibly everything that God wanted to communicate to men about the truths necessary for salvation. The Canon of Scripture is the entire list of books recognized by the Church as “inspired” by God. (Dei Verbum 11)

The Magisterium of the Church is the “teaching authority” given by Christ to St. Peter, the Apostles and their successors. The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone. Its authority in this matter is exercised in the name of Jesus Christ" (DV 10). The Church puts forth the teachings of Christ through dogmas, symbols of Faith, Encyclicals, Documents of Councils of Bishops (like the Council of Trent, or the Second Vatican Council) and Catechisms.

After discussing these points, Fr. Matthew will give us the story of how he discerned his call to be a Priest in Miles Christi, and some other fun facts!

All these topics can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, numbers 74 to 141.

Besides, one of the Church Fathers, Tertullian, witnesses clearly to the truth of the Apostolic Tradition as a source of revelation, in one of his writings, which you can find in the Second Reading of the Office of Readings for the Feast of Sts. Philip and James (May 3). The quote is from his “Treatise On the Prescription of Heretics” (Cap. 20:1-9:21,3; 22,8-10: CCL 1, 201-204). 08 Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium of the Church

In this episode we discuss how the Fullness of God’s Public Revelation came through Jesus Christ, true God and true Man. (Second Vatican Council, Dei Verbum, 2)

He passed on the "Deposit of Faith" to the Apostles. This was transmitted in the Church, to future generations in two ways, through Tradition and The Sacred Scriptures. God granted the Holy Spirit to assist the Church in faithfully preserving intact that Deposit of Faith, and in correctly interpreting the Scriptures and Tradition through her Magisterium.

All this can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 74 through 79 (link).

The fact that all Catholics must firmly believe that Jesus Christ established only one Catholic Church as the only means of salvation is clearly stated in the document “Dominus Jesus”, number 16. All Catholics must firmly believe that the Lord Jesus will never abandon His Church.

All Catholics must also believe that there is a continuity between the Church founded by Christ and the Catholic Church.

07 The Problem of Evil - Fr. Walter Ciszek's Example

In this episode we discuss first how God created the world from nothing, and how he continues to maintain the world in its being. This action of God implies that He provides the means for each being to obtain its purpose in this world.

However, the reality of EVIL is a stumbling block for many to accept that a good God could have created this world. With our guest, John Dejak, we look at the life and writings of a great priest, Fr. Walter Ciszek, S.J., to understand a bit more how to accept the reality of evil in our world, while using it to give greater glory to God and bring about good in the world.

John speaks about the life of Fr. Ciszek, and gives us some insights into his spiritual life, in the midst of the terrible sufferings he endured while a prisoner in the Soviet Union, and even after that, while he lived in America during turbulent times.

Apart from “With God in America”, Fr. Ciszek is the author of “With God in Russia” and “He Leadeth Me”, which we highly recommend you to read, if you want to have some profound insights as to how endure sufferings in a saintly way.

All the principles discussed here, about creation, Diving Providence and evil, can be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, numbers 299 through 314.

John Dejak helped edit and compile one of Fr. Ciszek’s book, “With God in America”, which you can find here: https://www.amazon.com/God-America-Spiritual-Legacy-Unlikely/dp/0829444548

06 God Revealed Himself through Jesus Christ

In this episode we discuss how God has chosen to reveal Himself to man. He did so first of all at the beginning of time, to Adam and Eve.

However, after the fall, He also revealed Himself to Abraham, and his descendants. He did so gradually, little by little throughout the centuries. This revelation reached its culmination in Jesus Christ. Jesus established the Catholic Church, giving her the mission to protect that “deposit of Faith”, and transmit it faithfully to the different cultures and societies throughout history.

The fact that Jesus Christ (the Word of God made flesh) is the only mediator between God and Man, the only Revealer of the Father, and that He established only one Church—the Catholic Church—is stated in the document “Dominus Jesus”, signed by Card. Ratzinger, the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This is a document worth reading!

The complete document “Dominus Jesus” can be found here: Library : Dominus Iesus (On the Unicity and Salvific Universality of Jesus Christ and the Church) | Catholic Culture

We also discuss what are “private revelations” and their roll in the history of the Church.

05 - Does God exist - How to prove it

In this episode we discuss the existence of God, what obstacles one could find in accepting His existence, and what rational ways we have of showing that God exists.

We welcome a guest, Fr. Paul De Soza, who is a priest of Miles Christi living in San Diego.

After addressing the different reasons why many Catholic young people tend to doubt—and sometimes deny—the existence of God, we take a bird's-eye view of the different ways of demonstrating (not in the sense of natural sciences) the existence of God, using as starting points the world and the human person.

You may want to read the section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church which talks about this (numbers 31-38).

Regarding the proof of God’s existence starting from the world around us, if you like a more philosophical explanation, you can read the section of a book by Etienne Gilson, The Christian Philosophy of St. Thomas Aquinas, Part 1, Chapter 3; Notre Dame Press, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1956. There he addresses the “Five Ways” of demonstrating the existence of God of St. Thomas Aquinas.

St. Thomas addresses the first of these “ways” to prove God’s existence in the Summa Contra Gentiles 1,13. You can find it here: https://isidore.co/aquinas/english/ContraGentiles1.htm#13 . There is his own summarized version of all the five ways in the Summa Theologica, 1PstP Part, q.2, a.3.

Fr. Paul then shares some of his life experiences and how he was able to discern that God was calling him to the Priesthood in Miles Christi.

04 We Are Created By God And For God

In this episode I discuss how every human being is created by God with an inherent capacity to know and love God. This gives all men their GREATEST DIGNITY. Our Creator instilled in us that capacity and a desire to know and love Him, which cannot be fulfilled by any other created being except by God. This is why, as St. Augustine said in his Confessions (book 1, chapter 1) that “You have created us, oh God, for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in You.”

And while we can know and love God, and therefore think and speak about God, we should always remember that He is infinitely greater than any thought, concept or image that we can form in our minds about Him. What we know about Him is much less than what we do not know about Him.

St. Thomas says that “concerning God, we cannot grasp what he is, but only what he is not, and how other beings stand in relation to him.” (Summa Contra Gentiles Bk.I, ch.30. You can find more online here: Thomas Aquinas: Contra Gentiles: English (isidore.co))

In this episode I share a vision of God that St. Thomas Aquinas had toward the end of his life, after which he could not continue writing. (Source: Santiago Ramirez, Introducción a Tomás de Aquino, Biblioteca de Autores Cristianos, Madrid, 1975.)

As St. Paul says: “eye has not seen, and ear has not heard (…) what God has prepared for those who love him.” (1 Cor 2:9-10).

03 Faith Impact - Blessed Carlo Acutis Example

In this episode we are joined by my good friend, Colton Duncan, who is a college student. We talk about the impact that knowing about you faith will have in your life. Colton shares with us the example of the life of Blessed Carlo Acutis, a young man who died at 15 years of age, and was beatified by Pope Francis.

Born in England, he lived between 1991 and 2006. He lived most of his life in Italy. He was quite tech-savvy, and set up a website to promote the different Eucharistic Miracles that occurred in the history of the Church throughout the world. You can see that website at www.miracolieucaristici.org

He had a great devotion to the Holy Eucharist, had a great heart to help those in need, especially the poor. He was diagnosed with leukemia, and died soon afterward. He embraced his death with great peace and hope in eternal life and in God’s help.

You can read more about the Eucharist, the Holy Mass and the blessed Sacrament, in numbers 271, 273, 280, 282 through 286. You can find it online here: https://www.vatican.va/archive/compendium_ccc/documents/archive_2005_compendium-ccc_en.html

If you Google “Carlo Acutis” you will see many pictures of him!

02 Why learn about your Faith - Purpose in life

In this episode we discuss the importance of knowing your Catholic Faith, and understanding the purpose of your life.

The knowledge that St. Joseph received from the angel (Mt 1:18), about God’s plan over the Child to be born (Jesus), the virgin Mary and himself made him CHANGE THE COURSE OF HIS LIFE entirely.

There is no doubt that understanding why you were created by God, that is, the PURPOSE why you were created, will make a huge difference in your life.

During the episode I discuss a great example of the life of St. Philip Neri, called the "apostle of Rome", who lived between 1551 and 1595. The source is: Mauricio Rufino, Vademecum de ejemplos predicables, Barcelona 1962, 1870.)

Most of us, at some point our lives ask the most fundamental questions about our existence. Why are we here? What is our purpose in life?

I discuss point #1 of the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (What is the plan of God for man?), which you can find here: https://www.vatican.va/archive/compendium_ccc/documents/archive_2005_compendium-ccc_en.html
