#233 - Antarctica (Eric Richter, Glenn Maryansky)
Today on the podcast, we welcome Eric Richter and Glenn Maryansky from the band Antarctica. Eric was in Christie Front Drive and has been on the podcast before. Eric had this other band with an amazing group of musicians in the late 90s in NYC that went more toward the NYC electronic scene and more Underworld, New Order, The Cure, Ride, etc. At the time, it was largely forgotten. Solid Brass Records is getting this stuff online for everyone to enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#229 - Colin McCann (Don Martin Three, Vulture Feather, Wilderness)
Today on the podcast we welcome Colin McCann from Don Martin Three, Vulture Feather and Wilderness. Don Martin Three were from St Augustine Florida from the years 1993 to 1996. If you’re a fan of Moss Icon, Indian Summer and Policy Of 3. Screaming, quiet loud parts, and amazing guitar work, this is a band to listen to. We talk about that time and the bands from the 90s when the word didn’t mean much. We then get into Vulture Feather, a new album called Liminal Fields is out now and one of the best albums of the year. So search it out. We talk about the meaning behind the band and struggles Colin had before making music again. This was a beautiful conversation with someone I never expected to reach out and happy they did. #228 - J. Robbins (Musician, Producer, Engineer)
It's an honor to have J. Robbins on the podcast. As someone that I've enjoyed his music performances in bands like Jawbox and Burning Airlines, to being a part of some of the most influential albums in my life as a producer/engineer, it was hard to not geek out the entire time. He couldn't have been nicer to talk through his life, influences, and his impression on emo and music making today. Be sure and check out his website JRobbins.net to learn more about the projects he's been a part of and his own music that he's continuing to make. Learn more about your ad choices. #227 - Michael Malarkey (Burial Clouds, Shadyside)
Today on the podcast we welcome back Michael Malarkey. I had him on episode 197 and we’re back again to chat about his new music with the group Burial Clouds. Michael, especially on Instagram, is always first to comment on an an obscure screamo band from the 90s. We caught up about some of his fav bands from the 90s ear, what he has to do before every show or play he performs. We talk festivals for a bit and how he handed Jake Bannon from Converge his demo when he was 20 years old. Plus get stoked on Botch and how getting called for movie or tv gigs messes up his show plans. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#225 - Ben Green (Fairweather, Ivakota Recording Studio)
Today on the podcast we welcome Ben Green from Fairweather and Ivakota Recording Studios. Ben and I speak about his time growing up, being exposed to music, forming Fairweather, struggles in the mid 00s, and was really candid about not just the successes but the mistakes the band made. Fairweather has new music that you should check out and enjoy the many stories about Equal Vision Records and someone named Dan, who is the GM over there and a dear friend of Ben and I. Also we get into Ben’s 2nd life at his studio as a producer/engineer running Ivakota Recording Studio. A really fun way to end speaking about how he learned things from his band and helping today’s bands try not make the same ones. Lastly, we nerd out a bit on metal throughout the episode including a story at the end you won’t want to miss. And to celebrate the metal chat, we both made metal playlists on Spotify and those will be linked on Washed Up Emo dot com or below depending on your podcast player. #223 - Braid (25th Anniversary of "Frame & Canvas")
Today on the podcast are the members of Braid talking about their 25th Anniversary and tour for Frame & Canvas. I thought it’d be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. What’s amazing is everyone gave different answers and memories. Plus, the secret gem of the episode is worth listening through the whole thing I promise you. I had each person describe the other band members in one word. The answers they give are insightful, sweet, and hilarious. First up is Todd Bell, then Bob Nanna, Chris Broach, then finishing up with Damon Atkinson. What’s amazing listening back to these interviews is how different everyone is but how they need a vote of 4 to decide anything as Braid. They’re back, ready to rock again. Lastly, please stay for Damon’s stories which had me laughing and a great set closer to the episodes. We hadn’t spoken before for the pod, so we had a little extra time to chat. This was an absolute blast to do and put together. Thanks to Polyvinyl, Tito and the dudes for being game to have some fun. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Now The Sound of Animals Fighting has a new EP called “APESHIT” out on Born Losers Records. Rich and I discuss his career balancing music, collaboration and his day job. Old shows he saw growing up in LA, plus his amazing knack as a teacher in real life to provide some real knowledge about listening to your heart, your mind, and realities we face as creative people. #220 - Melody Caudill (Career Woman)
Today on the podcast we welcome Melody Caudill. She’s the name behind Career Woman, that’s currently partnering with the fabulous Lauren Records. You may recognize the last name. Melody is the daughter of Jeff Caudill from Gameface and a new band called Low Coast. All that to say, Melody recently released a song called “Patience (I Like You)” that blew me away. Jeff had been sending me her music since she began writing and I was always intrigued with how a rock star’s daughter could go down the same path when most often times they rebel and do something opposite. I threw out the idea to chat with them together. Melody and I kicked Jeff out after about 20 minutes or so and got talk directly about her musical journey, writing process, her wants and dreams. For those listening, Melody is a freshman in college and way the hell ahead of how I was at her age and it was an absolute joy to hear her perspective on things in life and music. She even played Gilman Street in SF recently. Can’t get any cooler than that. To learn more about Melody’s music search out Career Woman on all the socials or through Lauren Records. #219 - M.C. Taylor (Hiss Golden Messenger, Ex-Ignota)
Today on the podcast, we welcome M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger and Ex-Ignota. They may have never crossed your path. That’s ok. Upon further inspection, a singer songwriter signed to Merge may bring more questions than answers. We met through a post I made on Instagram. I went, why does that name seem familiar. I reached out and after recognizing the name of his old band on Ebullition called Ex-Ignota, which were a hardcore band from the 90s in Goleta/Santa Barbara area. Fittingly, I took a drive up recently to see him perform in Santa Barbara and speak in person for the podcast. MC was insanely generous with his time and even shouted out the podcast to the crowd during the show. You’ll hear about how M.C. had house shows that would make anyone yearn for a time machine and a love for the early days of emo that was super deep and I learned a ton from him about his position in the scene and where he is today and how it shaped him. His past may be in hardcore and emo with his pedal full on a now full time career as a musician as Hiss Golden Messenger, which we talk about at length. You can hear it in his songs, there’s a little hardcore in em and after this episode it’ll be even more clear. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#218 - Vanessa Downing (Samuel S.C.)
Today on the podcast we welcome Vanessa Downing from Samuel or as they known now as Samuel SC. SC is for State College in Pennsylvania where they got together. Samuel was around for 2 years from 1993-1995 and released a split 7” with Texas is the Reason and releases with Art Monk and others. They’re this great moment in that era after the alternative boom and hardcore/emo intermixed. What’s amazing is the band members reconnected further during the pandemic and are back with a new album, touring upcoming and a realization that people cared about their old band. Vanessa and I speak about her life and music endeavors that still burn bright today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#217 - David Knudson (Botch, Minus the Bear)
Today on the podcast we welcome David Knudson from Botch and Minus the Bear. I was so excited that David said yes to the podcast and we spoke recently after the first set of Botch reunion shows. We talk about being creative, Seattle in the 90s outside of grunge, and his battle with making better choices in life. Including a deep conversation on how alcohol can catch up with you and the lessons he learned from rehab but also his family. This new Botch tour and music wouldn’t have happened without love from his family and friends to see this other side. We’re the lucky recipients of that but now knowing the struggle and the strength David had during that time was truly inspirational. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#216 - Jake Brennan (Disgraceland, Cast Iron Hike)
Today on the podcast we welcome Jake Brennan. I’ve wanted Jake on the podcast for years! You may know him from his podcast Disgraceland or as a member of the band Cast Iron Hike. He also started Double Elvis, a podcast network that I’m a part of. So full disclosure, we’re partners but that being said, I’ve probably had Jake on my wishlist since I started the podcast. We get into a lot about intention and what drives creators like Jake and others. He is in such a great place doing something he loves and it came out of intent. We discuss Fugazi, storytelling, origins of why he tells the stories he does and what his favorite sport is. A truly great conversation with Jake on being a creator and you know it, we talked about when he heard the word emo and his thoughts around it. Learn more about your ad choices. #215 - Daniel Littleton (The Hated)
Today on the podcast we welcome Daniel Littleton from The Hated. Daniel has a whole other band called Ida and that’s a whole separate episode. Today, we just stick to The Hated, which has had their catalog meticulously handled by our friends at Numero Group and recently played some reunion shows. The Hated were an early emo band. Daniel goes to great lengths to explain his fascination and frustration with the word but in the end he weaves a tale that talks about his upbringing in a biracial family that shaped his life and also seeing bands like Bad Brains or women in music helped guide where he is today. A true legend and I invite you to sit back and listen, which I do for most of this, on a time and place before the word was even uttered. This one is an absolute trip to listen back to and I hope you enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Today we talk about his new projects, his favorite emo albums of all time, and we look back at the emo revival era with a critical eye. #213 - Ken Shipley (Numero Group, Tree Records)
Today on the podcast we welcome Ken Shipley from Numero Group and Tree Records. Many may know Numero Group for their fantastic reissues and they have a show coming up this weekend in LA celebrating 20 years called Numero 20. A very special show with bands we’ve featured on the podcast the last few weeks and more to come. What we’re going to touch on more for this episode is how he got to Numero and his first experiences figuring out the world of record making under the name Tree Records. A fantastic run of releases highlighted by a series called Post Marked Stamps that put many bands we love in the emo genre on the map. A true honor to spend an hour with a person that I look up to professionally. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#212 - Ted Leo (Chisel)
Today we welcome Ted Leo from Chisel. You may know Ted Leo or Ted Leo and the Pharmacists. Or you’re wondering what Ted is doing on the podcast. We’re deep in our Numero Group 20 Celebration and if you heard the last episode with John Dugan of Chisel, Ted has a great history in hardcore in the NYC area going to shows at ABC No Rio among others and we talk about those days, his thoughts on emo from DC, the early 2000s scene and how special this upcoming "Set You Free" reissue and shows with Numero Group means to him. Ted was an absolute blast to chat with and you’ll wonder where the time went as he weaves stories and moments together that at one point says he’s never said in any other interview. A true honor to have a DIY legend on the podcast and couldn’t have been happier to have it line up with Numero Group’s reissue of “Set You Free” and their upcoming shows. #211 - John Dugan (Chisel)
Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they’re about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn’t realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John’s younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I’ve spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I’d see the Dugans in Northern Virginia. Full circle moment and happy to have John on to talk about Chisel and his many musical band over the years. We touch on his experience with Revolution Summer, Amanda MacKaye recommending he buy an album that went on to change history, his time at the City Paper and the opportunities that Brough about and the post-Nirvana boom of labels trying to sign Chisel. We even talk Fall Out Boy and the renewed interest in Chisel. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#210 - Chris Sheppard (Everyone Asked About You)
Today on the podcast we welcome Chris Sheppard from Everyone Asked About You. If you’re not aware, this band was a late 90s gem of a band that I missed myself during this time. After finding out about them through some friends at Numero Group and talking to Chris, they intersected and overlapped with many of the bands of the time in their home of Little Rock Arkansas. Chris and I talk a lot about where he’s from, seeing early emo bands, being in a band with a woman around that time, connecting with Ken Shipley from Tree Records who now runs Numero Group and the subsequent reunion shows and music being available again for the world. Plus we preview the upcoming Numero 20 showcase they’re playing in LA next month. Finally, we talk to Chris about his career now that I guarantee you will not want to miss. I have to say, talking to bands I never knew then but connect with instantly continues to affirm my belief in this special time as a genre and as a music scene. This band I would have been obsessed with back in the day. Girl and guy vocals, super dissonant and great peaks and valleys. Heaven. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#209 - Erik Fisher (The Hated)
Today on the podcast, we welcome Erik Fisher from The Hated. The Hated were a 4 piece emo band from Annapolis Maryland who were active from 1985-1990. They are considered an early emo band and around the same time as many we know like Rites of Spring, Gray Matter, and Moss Icon. Thankfully, Numero Group has their music streaming and available. Go search it out. Now to the interview. For those that have been in college or had a really great teacher in high school perhaps. This is for you. That one class that you felt so engaged with someone and the flow back and forth on ideas kept on a path that enlightened both the student and the teacher. I let this one stay more open than usual because the flow of this with Erik, who is a professor by profession, is glorious to listen back on. If you haven’t had a class like this before, this is close to it. When the bell rings, you felt you could take on the world and a new appreciation for what you just learned. I learned so much talking to Erik about his perspective on emo, his band, and music and philosophy. My favorite part is when Erik talks about seeing Rites of Spring for the first time. Holy shit, fucking epic. I can’t wait for you to listen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#208 - Justin Pearson (Three One G, Swing Kids, The Locust)
Today we welcome Justin Pearson. If that name is unfamiliar, head to Three One G dot com right now. Justin was and is a musical force. He’s been in a lot of projects over the years and worth diving into his work now with Dead Cross, Deaf Club or where I found out about him when I was younger with Swing Kids and then The Locust. Justin was a little older than me and hearing about his history with punk, hardcore, and the word emo was again eye opening for me as someone that only knows so much. Justin was honest and open about how he felt about the scene and is an inspiration for myself and hopefully you after listening to this interview. Again, search out Three One G, we’ll have links on Washed Up Emo dot com and dive into him if you’ve never heard about him or ride alongside with the emo nerd and get schooled from a legend. #207 - Tim Kasher (Track by Track of Cursive's "Domestica")
Today we welcome Tim Kasher, again! He’s been on prior as a guest talking about his entire career and also was included in volume 2 of the Anthology of Emo book series, now we dive even deeper. This time we dive into the absolute classic “Domestica.” Released in June way back in 2000, this album released posthumously, really was an evolution of their last two records and started to almost restart the band out of chaos and unrest. The album, rumored to be about a divorce, as you will hear, is close but also far away as well. Tim was generous was his time to dive really deep into the album, cover, and every single track. Including some about Braces, a short lived band that was a 3 piece that you’ll hear on the reissue. Enough of me talking, this album is a shade over 30 minutes but we’ll spend the next hour to let Tim tell us all about “Domestica.” I hope you enjoy. Reissue is available via 15 Passenger. Think about it, you’re 18, living in Pennsylvania and some of the first bands you start booking are Hot Water Music, Elliott, and Jimmy Eat World. How’s that for a start? FATA Booking Company turned 25 in 2021 and still going strong today. Eva came up around a similar time and saw the emo boom first hand with booking and managing bands. #204 - Sonny Kay (Angel Hair, The VSS, GSL)

You may know Sonny from Angel Hair which put out records on Gravity Records or his own label Gold Standard Laboratories or maybe The VSS. If not, that is totally fine. You’ll learn about them all and other projects he was a part of over the next hour or so. Sonny is a pillar in the early days of emo/screamo/hardcore that shouldn’t be overlooked. He’s someone that even if you haven’t heard his bands, you’ve seen his work as an artist for The Mars Volta and many others. I can’t stress enough how much I implore you to search Sonny out, his music, his art and projects. Learn more about Sonny at SonnyKay dot com. Sit back and listen to one of the original legends. #203 - Cam DiNunzio (Lazycain, Denali)
Today we welcome Cam DiNunzio from Lazycain and Denali. Today, he makes his wares as a composer and music supervisor. We spoke about his early days in Virginia Beach, moving to Richmond, and his thoughts on music as he navigated and survived the emo label. Cam’s contribution to music, this genre, and further throughout the musical landscape is a reason for you to stick around if you haven’t heard of the bands or his name. If you have, you’re in for a treat. We dive into the Lazycain and Denali days. At the start as context, I mention Cam’s bandmate John, who we worked together when I first moved to NYC back in 2000. With that said, as comforting as when a 718 area code calls a 917, listening back this felt more like a conversation, not an interview. I hope you enjoy. Learn more about your ad choices. #202 - Josh English (Six Going On Seven)
Today we welcome Josh English from the band Six going On Seven. Josh was raised in Portland Oregon, seasoned in Boston and an influence on many bands you love today. He should be on the tip of your tongue in this scene. Maybe after this interview the band and Josh will be. Their influence personally has stayed with me for years from their days on Some Records in the late 90s to "American’t (or Won’t)" on Big Wheel Recreation released back in 2001. The band shortly broke up and their CDs and 7”s I had have been staring back at me since. I honestly always had Josh on a list to interview and as this podcast creeps past its 200th episode and 10th year, it was an honor to speak to Josh about his life and what’s he got up next in his career. If you haven’t heard any of those aforementioned bands, get on that and you’ll see why Ryan is right at home here on Washed Up Emo. His time in punk, years at Deep Elm Records, and the time I spent working Liars Academy is discussed at length. Ryan’s honest reflections on his time in music both good and bad showcase how this little genre pokes its head out even after you left it in the drawer for years and years. I’ve honestly wanted Ryan on since the day I started this podcast so on the even of 10 years of this podcast, no better friend could be had and I think you’ll agree. #200 - Adam Lazzara (Taking Back Sunday)
Today we welcome a very special guest and friend, Adam Lazzara from Taking Back Sunday. It’s fitting he’s number 200. I met him early on in my days at college when I’d see him at shows all the time. He was in high school at the time and it was something where no matter the show, Adam was there. During the podcast, we catch up on live and I bring up one of the worst shows he’s ever played at a band that coincidentally led to him moving up to Long Island. As someone who was a fan of him before the band, it was this magical thing. Someone from around here in North Carolina is going to live in NYC? Wow! As the years past and releases, we’d spare a minute or a quick hello as life runs by. It’s fitting for 200 because we’re coming up on 10 years of the podcast and 14 years of washed up emo. You tend to look back and remember who was there next to you at the beginning. Adam was that person. It feels good to know Adam is a part of this series and like emo, no matter if you showed up today or 20 years ago, it’s all here waiting for you. #198 - Walter Schreifels
Today on the podcast, we welcome Walter Schreifels. Walter has been in some of the most influential hardcore bands including Gorilla Biscuits, Youth of Today, Quicksand, Rival Schools and his label he ran, Some Records. We also touch on emo, post-hardcore and his life today. Walter couldn’t have been nicer during this interview. He’s still huge in the scene and continues to make music for the masses. Life pro tip. #197 - Michael Malarkey (Actor, Musician)
Today on the podcast, we welcome actor and musician Michael Malarkey. You may know Michael from his acting roles in the Vampire Diaries to Project Blue Book. His most recent album “Graveracer” was released in early 2020. Michael is a huge fan of emo, punk, hardcore, and screamo. My favorite quote was fitting to many that have a love of something not their job and hope they can do one to help the other. He said, “I’m a musician with an acting problem.” Both are great and it was an honor to have Michael be a part of this podcast. If you’re a fan of him or not, or know too much or not enough, you’ll enjoy this episode. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. #195 - Jim Ward (At the Drive-In, Sparta, Sleepercar)
Today we welcome musician Jim Ward. You may know him from At the Drive-In, Sparta, or Sleepercar. He has a new solo record called “Daggers” out June 11th. If you’re listening to this in the future, I’m sure it’s on whatever streaming service or implant we all have to enjoy our favorite tunes. Jim was an absolute blast to talk to and someone I’ve been wanting on the podcast since I started this back in 2011. We spoke a lot about his life weaving in music, touring, and what he’s learned over the years. Jim pulled zero punches and was hopeful in his words that resonated deeply with me listening back. If you’re a fan of him or not, you’ll dig this chat. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#194 - Johnathon Ford (Unwed Sailor, Roadside Monument)
Today, we welcome Johnathon Ford from Unwed Sailor and Roadside Monument. Johnathon and I have been trying to make this happen for years as we’d connect via mutual friends or at a show. Most recently in Brooklyn back before the pandemic we ended up talking for a long time after an Unwed Sailor show and it went places where you don’t expect a conversation to go and all the sudden you get a text or the bartender goes, “yea it’s closing time.” I wanted to do that again so I got Johnathon to come back on to talk about his music career from his early bands to Roadside Monument and his latest album “Truth or Consequences” that is out now on Spartan Records. As with any guests that got to take in the 80s, I was smitten with his stories of Seattle, Tulsa, and what laid the groundwork for his musical taste, ideals, but also where he is today. If you’ve never heard of either band, they are bedrocks for this scene and worth your time to dive into. If you have and looking to hear Johnathon speak at length about his life, you’re going to love this too. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #193 - Brian Fallon
Today we welcome singer/songwriter Brian Fallon. You may also know him from The Gaslight Anthem or The Horrible Crowes and many other bands. Brian and I caught up to chat about finding music, his love of emo and influences that many may not realize. From The Gloria Record, Planes Mistaken for Stars, Mineral, Sunny Day Real Estate, I Hate Myself… these all shaped his writing from his time in a band and solo career. It was an absolute pleasure to chat with Brian about his life in music so far and there’s plenty more ahead that will always include some influences from our scene both old and new. #192 - Brian Sokel (Franklin, AM/FM)
Today we welcome Brian Sokel from Franklin and AM/FM. Franklin were a Philly area band from 1992-2000 that had releases and played with many of your favorite bands during that time. Brian was the guitarist of Franklin and put out a bunch of great music that runs the gamut from post to dub to low-fi indie. With releases on Tree, Workshop, File 13, etc and then with Polyvinyl, for his days with the project AM/FM, Brian has spent time putting together photos and audio online for whoever may stumble upon this. It’s how we met today. We also get to spend time talking about his neighbor Atom from Atom and his Package fame. Let’s hear it for “E is for Enya.” Here’s how to learn more. #191 - Mario Rubalcaba (Clikatat Ikatowi, Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt)
Today, we welcome Mario Rubalcaba from Clikatat Ikatowi! Mario has been in many bands from Earthless, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, and Off!. As with the podcast, we spoke a lot about his time skating, the formation of Clikatat Ikatowi and the surrounding scene of San Diego that shaped him. A lot of great stories from Mario about his time in music. An absolute legendary drummer and so happy he took some time to chat about his time in music with me. #190 - Sara Lund (Unwound)
Today, we welcome Sara Lund from Unwound. Unwound were around from 1991 to 2002 and Sara joined soon after they started in 1992. Their influences on music and culture run vast from Botch, Garden Variety, Blonde Redhead, Modest Mouse, Pg. 99, and many more. In 2013, The Numero Group released the band’s entire studio output, so it’s out there for you to dive into. Jason Heller from the AV Club and past guest on the podcast was quoted saying “Unwound was the best band of the 90s.” Quite the compliment. Sara has been in many bands since and well worth your time to dig those out. She’s also a drum teacher which you can book an online drum lesson if you want. Today we welcome Brianna Collins from Tigers Jaw. The band just released a new album on Hopeless Records called "I Won’t Care How You Remember Me" and it is fantastic. I had Ben from the band on allll the way for episode 77 so it was time for another episode and why not time it around the new album. Brianna and I talk about the band’s evolution, the new record, and her thoughts on the scene from the revival up to today. #188 - Ryan Ferguson (No Knife)
Today, we welcome guitarist and singer from Ryan Ferguson from the band No Knife. I had Mitch Wilson (the other half of the guitar vocals of No Knife) on episode 153 and today, we welcome in Ryan. We talk a lot about his music both solo and No Knife, the scene, and I sorta didn’t realize but I read a super low Pitchfork review of one of his solo albums that Ryan never knew they reviewed or read it. So I read the review and you’ll hear how that turned out. If you haven’t heard No Knife or Ryan’s solo stuff, give it a try. An absolute unique sound and their records never sound old to me whenever they come on… No Knife were one of the best bands ever to come out of San Diego and I’m so happy Ryan spent some time to chat about it EDIT: 3/1/21: Not Ken Griffey, Jr. it was Barry Larkin. Today we have a special episode with Zach Lind from Jimmy Eat World. He and I spoke recently talking about each song off of their 2004 release "Futures" for WUER, Washed Up Emo Radio that’s on Spotify right now. During the track by track we got into more about the band’s relationship with the fans now during this epidemic and what it’s been like re-learning and playing songs from past albums. #182 - Steven's Untitled Rock Show (Steven Smith, Jonah Bayer)
Today’s guests Steven Smith and Jonah Bayer you may know if you owned a television and loved music in the mid 2000s. Around that time, there was one TV show dedicated to the scene so to speak and championed many bands you know and love today. The show was Steven’s Untitled Rock Show on Fuse TV. A show I had the pleasure of working with during my day job at Equal Vision Records. To have their videos played and even interviewed was a huge deal at the time. Host Steven Smith and one of the writers for the show, Jonah Bayer are amazing in their candor about the time and place of the rock show and what is keeping that spirit alive today. #180 - Mike Reed (Small Brown Bike)
Like two friends who haven’t spoken in a bit. Mike and I start talking about a show i saw of theirs at the beginning of the pod. Mike was absolutely a joy to speak with albeit with some audio issues thanks to cell phones and not being able to do this in person. Also you may hear some beeps, not sure if the NSA was listening but if they are, I hope they enjoyed the trip down memory lane with Mike about the band, his life and what music has meant to him. I also seem to have had a crazy cold but still did this interview so I sound a little stuffed up. Also, it’s worth noting, please check out Travis Dopp’s GoFundMe for his fight against cancer. #179 - Mike Parsell (Frail)
Today, we have someone on the podcast that changed my life. Mike Parsell, guitarist from the band Frail. Frail were from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and when they played a local teen center near me in high school, I was absolutely hooked. Only around from 1993-1996, they influenced countless bands we love today when the worlds of emo and hardcore collided without dollar signs. Mike was very nice at the beginning of this podcast, letting me nerd out a bit about the first time I saw them and was very open about the band, his thoughts now about the music, and what it means to him. #178 - Tonie Joy (Moss Icon)
Today we welcome Tonie Joy from Moss Icon. Moss Icon were around for only four years but impacted two genres and countless bands after their short time together. They are an icon in this scene and it was absolutely fascinating to hear Tonie’s perspective on DIY and the music scene from his vantage point of being in this band from 1987-1991. We talk about how he met Jonathan Vance, finding punk and hardcore in the suburbs of DC, and the first time he heard the word emo. We also go deep into his relationship with the word and what he thinks now. Tonie was honest and someone I wish I could listen to for hours. Lucky for us, we got an hour and a half of a legend speaking about a time and place where many of the bands we love today bore some lineage to the bands Tonie was in. If you have no idea who these guys are, take a listen online. If you do know, you’re going to hear some stories told only on this podcast. #177 - Conor Oberst
Today, we welcome a legend, Conor Mullen Oberst to the podcast. No, I didn’t just add my last name to his name, that’s his actual middle name and we talk about it and no, we discussed it. We are not related. Mr Oberst was very gracious with his time while having some work done on his house, which you’ll hear at times during the podcast. It was an honor to discuss such life changing events as seeing Fugazi when he was 11 and the first time he heard the word emo at 16. We also chat about his feelings on the word emo and his association with it when his sound was traveling the opposite way. What I loved most about this interview was Conor’s openness. He was willing to discuss at length his history and what he’s trying to pass on as not just as a musician but as a human. We then spent time on Bright Eye’s legacy as the band turns 25 this year and what he thinks about himself and what the future holds. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #176 - Gared O'Donnell (Planes Mistaken for Stars)
Today on the podcast is Gared O’Donnell from Planes Mistaken for Stars. Gared and I recently connected after he heard an earlier podcast, episode 110 to be exact, with writer Jason Heller about the impact of Planes Mistaken for Stars and the untimely death of band member Matt Bellinger. Gared hadn’t heard this episode until recently and reached out to me after he listened. We ended up talking a bit and he agreed to come on the podcast. This episode now takes on a little extra weight. The interview, done in May of this year was before Gared was diagnosed in late August with stage 3 Esophagus cancer. As a favor, it’d be great while you’re listening to Gared’s interview to check out the link to his GoFundMe on Washed Up Emo. They’re still researching the best options for care but any words of support or some donation will go a long way for a legend. If you don’t know much about Planes Mistaken for Stars or a super fan, this episode is for you. Gared pulls no punches talking the band’s association with emo saying, “I think we wanted to lean into the dark side of things because it made more sense to us.” On their rowdy days, he admits. “It was a circus act, it wasn’t a magic show.” He talks fondly on his time with bandmate Matt saying, “Matt walks on stage with me, every time I do.” Lastly, he’s one of the most aware of his faults and dreams I’ve ever interviewed saying, “Sometimes life is just crushing, just to walk outside the door… if one our tunes can get you to roll up your sleeves and brave through it, then that’s all I want. Then stating eloquently “I’m hoping that on my deathbed, I’ll just remember that, I did it my way.” Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. #175 - Thomas Barnett (Strike Anywhere, Inquisition)
Today on the podcast we welcome Thomas Barnett from Strike Anywhere. A legend in the punk scene and someone that I’ve been following since 1999 when I first heard Strike Anywhere and their brand of political punk from Richmond, VA. When Thomas from Strike Anywhere first jumped on the phone with me said he was shy and not really a good talker. Well, he was completely wrong and I just sat back for most of this interview and listened to the master who has been going to shows since the 80s. he talked about learning how to put on shows at a barn on the outskirts of Richmond Virginia, and spoke passionately about what first bands he saw that shaped his life and his previous band Inquisition. I did a lot of editing myself out, yes, even the giggles. It was funny thought listening back to this interview and going, “yea don’t need to hear me talk there.” I was absolutely honored to have someone like Thomas take time to chat about the history of the “scene” in quotes and what shapes the scene and yourself. We of course talk about emo, don’t worry, but as you know, my love of hardcore runs deep so to hear him talk about the Richmond, Virginia scene, his life now and the band Strike Anywhere is still around! Their most recent album is out on Pure Noise Records now called “Nightmares of the West.” Definitely go check that out and as we all know and you’ve heard me preach, emo has many tentacles and a long history. A big part of the history that isn’t talked about enough is hardcore and punk. Hardcore intersects with emo so much that having Thomas on to school me on the history was amazing to experience. Today we welcome Jon Marburger from I Hate Myself. I Hate Myself were a three piece emo band from Gainesville, Florida and were around for only a short time from 1997-1998 and then reunited in 2003 and 2005. Not the longest career but to me, a cornerstone and trailblazer for the music we all love that followed. If you have any interest in the history of this genre and I Hate Myself hasn’t come into your life yet, I ask you to stick around and hear Jon’s words. We talk about his thoughts on his history in the scene, I Hate Myself, emo, the music Jon created after I Hate Myself, and we nerd out about Coheed and Cambria. #173 - Alex Dunham (Hoover)
Alex Dunham, singer and guitarist for the band and I connected in NYC right before the pandemic took hold in early March. It's crazy to hear our conversation have zero of the weight of conversations happening with our friends and family today. A time capsule for what was before this insanity we’re all in now. It’s also the last time I did an interview in my apartment in NYC. I insanely miss doing interviews in person because there’s time to gauge an answer, a pause, the eye contact, and the laughs. I’m happy someone captured the moment of us at my shitty Ikea kitchen table. If there’s one thing to do during this podcast, its take a minute. I let Alex contemplate and take a breath a lot of the podcast. There’s so much to get to from Alex’s beginnings in Arizona, learning about punk, getting the fuck out of Arizona and heading to Washington DC, getting signed to Dischord, and a story about Fugazi staying at his grandmother’s house. We also talk about what he’s doing now with his custom furniture company Brokenpress Design. Hoover should be mentioned daily when talking about post hardcore and the early 90s. Absolute icons and I couldn’t be happier to have Alex on to tell his story. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. #172 - Chris Simpson (Mineral, The Gloria Record, and Mountain Time)
So great to have Chris Simpson back on the podcast. Since we last spoke all the back for episode 15 of this podcast, Mineral wasn’t even reunited yet. We had a lot to catch up on. We talked about the Mineral 25th anniversary and how it was different from the reunion in 2014, the two new songs they wrote for the 25th anniversary book, and The Gloria Record’s reissue of A Lull in Traffic. I also continue to grill Chris about the unheard Gloria Record album I want him to finish and discuss the amazing new Mountain Time album at length which is out now on Spartan Records. At the end, if you stick around, Chris tells an amazing Antioch Arrow story. Lastly, the next volume of the Anthology of Emo book series was announced. #171 - Danny Pound (Vitreous Humor, The Regrets)
Today, we welcome Danny Pound from Vitreous Humor and The Regrets. In this podcast, I’ve tried to go back and find the origin, the meaning, and the stories behind this genre. In this episode, we go back to the start with Danny Pound. Danny’s band Vitreous Humor in the late 80s was the first band signed to Crank! Records and also their first release in 1994. Along with Boys Life, they were some of the first bands from this label out of the gate for a time that was hugely influential to me. The band broke up before I had a chance to see them and along with The Regrets, bucked the trend of what was supposed to be emo, thoughts around it and one of the true pioneers in this scene. They aren’t talked about enough and the best part, Danny is still making music today. Learn more at DannyPound.Bandcamp.com Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #170 - A Tribute to Jeff Hanson (Singer, Songwriter, M.I.J)
When I look back on my life and what albums had an immediate impact on me from the 90s, one jumps out that I felt never got their due. The band was M.I.J and the singer of that band, Jeff Hanson. Jeff tragically died in 2009 and left a wealth of material from three solo albums on Kill Rock Stars to an album and EP on the legendary Caulfield Records. I wanted to find a couple of folks to talk about Jeff and his life, stories, and legacy. Speaking about Jeff in this episode is Bob Nanna from Braid, Hey Mercedes, and many other bands, plus Bernie McGinn who put out the full length, “The Radio Goodnight” and an EP. They speak eloquently about Jeff and you’ll find out more about music but also his humor. If this perks your interest, I’ve linked a bunch of articles and content on Washed Up Emo to continue your dive into Jeff’s music. You can also go to JeffHanson.net. #169 - Whitmer Thomas (Comedian, Musician, The Golden One HBO Special)
Today, we welcome Whitmer Thomas. You’re saying, who is Whitmer? Whitmer is a comedian that recently had a 1-hour comedy special on HBO called The Golden One. It’s also an album of music with the same name that you can listen to on our favorite DSP. Whit was a musician before a comedian and has quite the extensive knowledge of punk, hardcore, and emo from his days playing in emo and screamo bands. To that, Whitmer jokes throughout his HBO special about bands we all know and love. You should search it out, as there isn’t a more specific comedy special for our crowd. Whitmer was a joy to talk to and we had a blast talking about his inspirations, his late mom’s band, and being creative in both music and comedy. #168 - Guy Picciotto (Rites of Spring, Fugazi)
Today, we welcome a legend. Guy Picciotto from Rites of Spring and Fugazi. You may also know him from Happy Go Licky or One Last Wish. Insert another obscure band to tweet at me later. In my years of doing this podcast, I never expected to have such legends of the genre. I’m glad I waited because Guy speaks about his feelings about the word emo and how it’s changed over the years. Really eye opening and wasn’t expecting him to expound on that as much as he did. Definitely stick around for that. Rites of Spring were only around for a couple years but still are mentioned when referring to this genre. As the word morphs and changes, Rites of Spring are the big bang of emo worth mentioning to this day. Guy was so eloquent and thoughtful in his responses and since we did the interview at my day job, Atlantic Records. We start the podcast discussing Fugazi’s experience back in the day when they were being courted by Atlantic. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Today we welcome Matt Saincome, Bill Conway and Krissy Howard from The Hard Times! The world famous satirical site stopped by Washed Up Emo on their recent book tour to talk about how the site started, how they come up with all the funny headlines, some regrets they’ve had, and I challenge them to come up with some emo headlines on the spot. #166 - William Goldsmith (Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft, Foo Fighters, Assertion)
Today we welcome drummer, William Goldsmith from Sunny Day Real Estate. You may also know him from The Fire Theft, Foo Fighters or his new band called Assertion. William and I had an amazing discussion about how he got into music, meeting Jeremy Enigk, the formation of Sunny Day Real Estate, and the lasting impact of the band. We also talk about how he met his close friend and bandmate in Assertion, Justin Tamminga, who you’ll hear speak up at times during the podcast. William’s story is one of perseverance, admitting when you need to fix yourself and when everything is stacked against you, you keep picking yourself back up. #165 - Steve Pedersen (Criteria, The White Octave, Cursive)
Today we welcome Steve Pedersen from such bands as Cursive, The White Octave, Slowdown Virginia, and Criteria. The boys in Criteria, after 15 years, have a new album entitled “Years,” coming out on 15 Passenger Records next month and Steve was kind enough to spend some time with Washed Up to talk about it. If you’re listening to this in the future, it’s out now on streaming services. In this episode, we dive into how Steve met Tim and Matt from Cursive, what was the glue and luck behind the Omaha scene, and how that led to Saddle Creek Records starting up. We also discuss how he divides up work and play and how that was achieved while attending law school at Duke. We try and touch on every part of his career and most of all talk about the new Criteria record. Fun fact: It’s Steve’s first 3rd album as a musician. That’s reason enough to celebrate and you’ll learn why later on in the podcast. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. #164 - Jimmy LaValle (The Album Leaf)
Today we welcome Jimmy LaValle from The Album Leaf. Jimmy and I met up in Los Angeles to talk about his early days from the 90s in San Diego being exposed to DIY and screamo to touring with bands like The Get Up Kids, Piebald, and Jimmy Eat World. We also dive into The Album Leaf project, how he met Sigur Rós, the Sub Pop Records days, and how he’s now busy with film scoring. It all makes sense and how each one happened all started with putting yourself out there and being involved. Jimmy’s story is one of constant creativity and making connections. #163 - Matt Pryor (20th Anniversary of "Something to Write Home About")
We welcome again on the podcast for a 3rd time, Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids. In this episode we discuss at length, the 20th anniversary of their album "Something to Write Home About." Matt and I discuss the making of the record, we go track by track on stories and lyrics behind the songs and the release of the record on Vagrant. We also dive into the aftermath after it’s release and boom of emo that followed. We spend time reflecting the album’s lasting impact with fans and the band that continues to this day. When an album comes out during a time that connects, yet today, there are kids now that still reference it shows the staying power of this album. From that opening drum beat of 'Ten Minutes' to the guitar pick scrape on 'Holiday' it all floods back for you and someone out there feels the same hearing it for first today today. That’s pretty amazing. Here’s to 20 more The Get Up Kids and happy anniversary to an absolute classic, "Something to Write Home About." Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #162 - Scott Hobart (Giants Chair)
Today we welcome singer, guitarist and lyricist, Scott Hobart from Giants Chair. Giants Chair are a midwest band that in the early 90s influenced many in the scene we know today. Starting out on the legendary Caulfield Records, Giants Chair have been off and on over the years and continued to be talked about when this genre and era is mentioned. Now they’re about to release their new album “Prefabylon” out December 6th on Spartan Records. If this is the future, it’s out now on streaming services. I think I giggled or laughed more than most episodes as Scott and I talk about the band’s history, his kids, his day job, and “Prefabylon.” Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #161 - Tracy Wilson (Dahlia Seed, Positive No)
Today we welcome Tracy Wilson from Dahlia Seed. You may also know her from her other bands Souvenir, Ringfinger or Positive No. If it is a no, let me explain. Tracy is an icon in the emo scene because she made her own path and her own rules on how to make it in the scene. Tracy and I talk about her many bands, jobs and stories over the years that intertwine the icons of the scene and little known ones that deserve a second look. A free flowing interview done in my apartment in NYC that was really enjoyable to listen to back to. We need more Tracy Wilsons in the world. Today we welcome Casey James Prestwood from Hot Rod Circuit. Casey and I talk through the history of Hot Rod Circuit and his current endeavors with country music and his band The Burning Angels. Casey recently released a 7” out with fellow friend Josh Berwanger on Lost Broadcast Records that’s worth checking out. If you ever wanted to know the ins and outs of what went down in the early 2000s, Hot Rod Circuit was right there. Casey weaves such a beautiful story through the eras, labels, and both hits and misses. I mostly sit back in this episode and let the master storyteller weave his tale. #159 - Dan Didier (20th Anniversary of "Very Emergency")
We welcome back Dan Didier from The Promise Ring to talk about the album “Very Emergency.” Why do you ask? Because today, September 28th, 2019 is the 20th anniversary of this album’s release on Jade Tree Records! To that, I wanted to find a fun way to celebrate and talk about the album. So Dan and I connected earlier this week to discuss many things including the inspiration of the album artwork, the backlash at the time, the one video they did for the album, Kim Colleta’s honest opinion of the album and also her prowess for taping NBA games on VHS, and finally we read some reviews on the album from AV Club, MTV, and Pitchfork. If you haven’t, you should listen to this album now, get a feel for it and take an hour as Dan and I discuss, laugh, and then laugh some more about this album, time, and how many times we had to go to the internet to remember something. #157 - Jamie Stillman (EarthQuaker Devices, Harriet the Spy)
Today we welcome Jamie Stillman from EarthQuaker Devices, an effects pedal company out of Akron, Ohio. Jamie was also in bands you may have heard of like The Party of Helicopters, Fringe Candidate, Relaxer (his current band,) and my favorite, Harriet the Spy. Harriet the Spy was a band out of Kent, Ohio that was around from 1993-1998 and was an actual screamo band. They were one of the first screamo bands I ever heard when I started getting into all of this stuff. Also from 1993 to 2002, Jamie ran Donut Friends Records and put out a ton of punk, metal, and shoegaze acts. What’s even more fascinating than his band/label stories, or his time as a tour manager that you’ll hear about, is how Jamie started an effects pedal company. It’s a testament to pursuing what you love leads to your work. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#156 - Jade Lilitri (Oso Oso)
Jade and I connected early on during the first album, "Real Stories Of True People Who Looked Kind Of Like Monsters." I was a huge fan and supporter. Following that debut, it was great to see the mainstream press take a liking to him after the amazing follow-up, "The Yunahon Mixtape." Now the album coming out August 16th, "Basking in the Glow," should propel him to another level. It’s that good. On the podcast, Jade and I discuss his early music life getting heckled, the new album, and there’s a good portion about the NBA, which we’re both huge fans of. #155 - Chris Crisci (The Appleseed Cast)
Today, we welcome Chris Crisci from The Appleseed Cast. Chris has been on my list for the entire 8 years of this podcast’s existence. I am honored to finally have him on the podcast. I loved Chris’ appreciation for the scene, constantly challenging himself, and not resting while making the band work alongside his day job, family and life. The band’s discography is one of my favorites in all of my music and to finally hear some of the questions I’ve had over the years was a true treat. Last, to note, there is a new album by the band entitled “The Fleeting Light of Impermanence” out of Graveface Records that we discuss. You can start listening to this on Friday, or if you’re listening to this in the future, it’s on your favorite streaming service. #154 - Ian MacKaye
A few months ago, I asked a couple of prior podcast guests Brian Lowit from Lovitt Records and now Dischord Records and John Davis from Q and Not U, if they thought an in-person interview could happen. Through their help and a little timing of a personal wedding in DC set this plan in motion. As this podcast gets into its 8th year with no signs of slowing down, I thought it was time to have the person partly responsible for why I first got into straightedge, punk, hardcore, and the DIY ethos I continue to carry through during my day job in the music industry at large. Ian couldn’t have been more gracious and after some back and forth and a nice Delta airlines agent, I was there with enough time to do the interview and make the wedding later that day. I never expected to have the opportunity to talk to one of my heroes in this setting and for Ian to spent a couple of hours showing me around the Dischord house, the archives and then an interview will be remembered forever. Today we welcome Mitch Wilson from No Knife! Mitch and I have spoken to each other over the years and finally got some time to chat. We got deep into the San Diego scene, meeting Rocket from the Crypt and Drive like Jehu and early days of being on a label associated with a major. How No Knife met The Get Up Kids, their deep relationship with Lazycain and Jimmy Eat World. We find out that we both utilize a set of jokes that we use relentlessly to our friends and family. #152 - John Vanderslice (Tiny Telephone Recording)
Today we welcome John Vanderslice. I found out about John through his album in 2000 called, Mass Suicide Occult Figurines, on Barsuk Records. It stuck with me and I’ve followed him since. Last month, he released his latest album “The Cedars” on Native Cat Recordings. He’s on tour with Pedro the Lion and worth a listen if you’ve never dived into the mind of Vanderslice. We talk about how he started late in music, how creating music takes some narcissism to survive, about the loss of life, and the depression that he’s been dealing with, including how this album saved his life. Plus, we dive into a discussion about having fame and critical acclaim early on in your career and what that does to you during and after. This is probably one of the more emotional as John opened up about his struggles with dependency on drugs and the battle he has every day with life, creating art, and keeping his recording studios, Tiny Telephone, afloat. Many of your favorite albums have been recorded there like ones from Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater-Kinney, Deerhoof, The Mountain Goats, The Magnetic Fields, and Spoon. A man not afraid to say what he feels and talk it out, I think you’ll enjoy this discussion. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. #151 - Adam Pfahler (Jawbreaker)
A documentary was released a few years ago called "Don’t Break Down," about Jawbreaker. Fun fact: Dan Didier, drummer for the Promise Ring, Maritime and Vermont was the producer of the film! After seeing a screening of the film, I was fascinated at how much footage they had of Jawbreaker. I found out later from Dan that Adam was the one that has been saving everything. When I approached Adam to do the podcast a couple of years ago, Adam said we would need to wait as they were just about to announce all of the reunion shows. Recently in Brooklyn, Adam and I finally sat down to talk. We discuss where these archival/documentation thoughts started in his life and how the video store that he owned for years was feeding that same itch. We also discuss what it’s like being in Jawbreaker now and not being as neurotic about taking photos or saving the flyers. In the same light, Adam is fully realizing how important these things are later and the love for his band is how everyone should think about their own band’s legacy, big or small. Bonus, we talk about emo and how Adam didn’t hear them being called emo until after they broke up. Finally, a couple of rad Nirvana stories about Adam seeing them for the first time and knowing the first single was going to be “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #150 - Mike and Nate Kinsella (American Football)
Wow, we made it to 150 episodes. Crazy to think about all the folks that have come on to share their story with you and I. To that, a big part of this is agreeing to be open and talk about their music. American Football gets the gold star. Before the reunions, in January 2014, Mike was on the podcast for the first time chatting about his career. For LP2, I had everyone in American Football individually to discuss reuniting and what it was like to write together again. So for LP3 I wanted to do something different… This time, I got Mike and Nate together in a room in NYC to discuss every single song in detail on LP3. We go from beginning to end on the writing process, the disagreements, sequencing, and why they made certain decisions for every song. Mike also recommends some bands I’ve never heard before and Nate reads an email he sent to the band passionately discussing why he feels his track listing order is the way it should go. #149 - David Bazan (Pedro the Lion)
David Bazan has always been on my list to be on the podcast, it just took almost 8 years. I always sorta thought he’d want nothing to do with me or the podcast. As with this stuff, I got over it and just asked. It worked and fittingly, David has also resurrected Pedro the Lion, with the first album under that name in 15 years. The album “Phoenix” out on Polyvinyl Records, is an amazing return. David and I speak about his religious upbringing, lots of Fugazi and we talk a lot about what music does to us when we close our eyes. Specifically that journey that music takes us on and what story you end up telling in the end. I think you’ll enjoy and I was nervous for a lot of this. I don’t know why, just meant a lot I guess. The band, out of Cleveland was on Deep Elm and The Militia Group back in the day and they recently reissued some lost demos through Matt’s label Steadfast Records. #147 - Fredrik Brändström (Starmarket)
I first heard Starmarket on the 3rd Emo Diaries compilation in 1999 and soon after they released their third album “Four Hours Light.” I was instantly blown away with the post-hardcore sound and the next level indie rock/emo sensibility. I never met these guys back in the day and with some reunion shows recently in Japan and their home country of Sweden, I slide into the DMs on Instagram to see if they’d be up to chatting about their band. #146 - Steve Schiltz (Longwave)
Today we welcome Steve Schiltz from Longwave. Steve is also an accomplished music producer and composer for film, TV and advertising. If you’re wondering why Steve is on. I have three reasons. First, when I moved to NYC, the Brooklyn thing was about to blow up and I was working at a label nearby a lot of these venues in the city where bands like the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others cut their teeth. Longwave were active around the same time as well and I loved them. Second, I was and still am, obsessed with shoe gaze. The similarities to the long droning emo songs that I also can’t stop emulating is directly related to my love of shoe gaze. I’d happily quit my job and join a shoe gaze band tomorrow. Hit me up. Third, I find out a half hour in that a past band Steve was in, Scout, toured with Sunny Day Real Estate! He waited 30 minutes to tell me that. Steve has a very funny story about Jeremy Enigk you’ll want to listen for. To be honest, this one is sorta for me. Over the years, Steve and I have crossed paths through friends and music here in NYC. I knowwww… It’s not emo, it’s not hardcore but Steve’s music is fucking beautiful and Longwave’s shoe gaze is what I’d want to sound like if I ever picked up my guitar again. Why should you listen? Steve weaves a rad story about early NYC, the boom of 2000s Brooklyn and the lasting effects of that era that still resonates today. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #145 - Hutch Harris (The Thermals)
We’re back and stoked to have episode 145 of the podcast with Hutch Harris, most widely know from the band, The Thermals. Hutch and I have been conversing back and forth on Twitter for years. I’d always loved his take on music, especially the punk and hardcore references. As a fan of his band, The Thermals, I was bummed when not long ago they called it quits. In addition to Hutch being a songwriter, I had also enjoyed his writing he’s done with various outlets, especially a recent piece on Pete Shelley from the Buzzcocks. On top of all that, he recently released a solo album entitled “Only Water” that’s absolutely beautiful! So the stars aligned and we caught up late last year to talk music. #144 - Erik Ratensperger (Jeromes Dream)
Today welcome Erik Ratensperger from the legendary screamo band Jeromes Dream. Jeromes Dream were around for a very short time from 1997 to 2001 born out of the Connecticut hardcore scene. They had a unique way of playing by way of the singer Jeff Smith refusing to use a microphone for shows. Also, the band was known for playing very short sets, usually no longer than 10 minutes. Pretty unique. These guys are right along side Pg.99, Orchid, Saetia in the early screamo era. If you’re unaware, it’s well worth a dive into their career. Lauren and I connected a few years ago and I found out she listened to the podcast! The stars aligned and we finally caught up recently to chat. Lauren is a massive emo fan and we chat deeply about her early days playing drums in bands around Glasgow, Scotland that helped shape who she is today. She was in a couple killer bands before this including Boyfriend/Girlfriend and Blue Sky Archives. Both are mathy, epic and remind me of the mid 90s. Find those on Bandcamp. You should also know the other two members in CHVRCHES, Martin and Iain, were in a great post rock band called Aerogramme. Their first release, A Story in White, is epic and worth a listen. How he ended up with this title of Internet’s busiest music nerd, is quite a story. Recently, Anthony and I connected over the phone to discuss how he got into doing this for a living and what he enjoys most out of reviewing music. Don’t worry, we got nerdy on some real screamo too. He recently released his first solo album entitled “In The Drink” that we discuss extensively in this episode and what it took to make it happen. We also chat about his upbringing with friends and family that helped him get into music, his years in speech therapy and the label of pop punk and emo with the band. #139 - David Moore (Chamberlain/Split Lip)
The band is celebrating 20 years of The Moon My Saddle with a few select shows and it was time to get David on. This podcast episode is a lot about redemption and letting things go as times pass. One of those is an amazing quote on The Moon My Saddle when it first came out in Alternative Press. It says “David Moore on this record makes Huey Lewis sound like the king of the Delta Blues.” Then, 10 years later, Alternative Press does a big feature/interview on the band. Some things are ahead of their time. David’s father drove his motorcycle across the United States to Los Angeles, California to try and make it as an actor. It never materialized and he came back to Indiana to raise his family. David also made that same decision after Chamberlain broke up, deciding to hang up the music and stop chasing the dream and get on with his life. It wasn’t entirely that simple as you’ll hear. We talk about David’s approach to music, the initial response to “The Moon My Saddle,” the band’s downfall and what David did after that. Also how he’s looking at the upcoming 20 year anniversary shows from that album as an adult versus the boy that first toured those songs. “If this was just about nostalgia, we are self-aware enough to know that we wouldn’t want to do it.” Not a bad way to think about it. Ryan and I talked about the band’s changes, their high profile producers they’ve worked with, how they were a midwest band but never really toured in the Midwest and their life in Japan that kept them going. Today we welcome Chris Popadak from Hawthorne Heights. Chris has been drumming with the band as a touring and session member since 2014 and joined fully last year. We connected because we’ve definitely used Hawthorne Heights as an example of when emo goes wrong and Chris wanted to set the story straight…. When we spoke over email he mentioned that he was into a bunch of the older stuff, the band knew they weren’t emo and to let me know they are still a band! Plus they haven’t stopped being a band, releasing a bunch of music independently, since the emo boom in the mid-00s. Their latest is on Pure Noise Records. Chris or “Poppy” as many call him that know him well, was a great guest and spoke honestly about being a musician with a band with one big song and how far that can take you and what doors it can open. He’s living the dream. Coincidentally, he is from Ohio. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#134 - Nathan Hardy (Microwave)
Today we welcome Nathan Hardy from the band Microwave. Microwave just finished up a little run with Jimmy Eat World and The Hotelier and it was high time to get Nathan to chat. We talk a lot about being labeled emo, his struggle and acceptance of growing out of the mormon church, being homeless for a time and feeling like a big kid when everyone else moves on and “grows up.” I remind him that Microwave is a horrible band name for SEO and Nathan searches his band name on Google for the first time. He also goes in depth on what the next album will be about. The DIY spirit is alive and well with Nathan and Microwave. If you aren’t familiar, check em out then dive into this interview. #133 - Tony Weinbender (Fest)
Today we welcome Tony Weinbender from Fest! Tony has curated an amazing festival in Florida started in 2002 with 60 bands has grown into the premiere independent festival with this year having 400+ bands performing across 3 days this fall. It’s simple, make something awesome and stick at it, people will support. Tony like myself started in college radio and booked bands at MacRock, the festival put on by WXJM at James Madison University. He then went on to work at No Idea Records in Florida and toured with bands like Less Than Jake. Fest 17 is this October and if you want to be a part of a community and a festival that keeps its DIY roots, Fest is it. Tony was amazing to spend time talking about his life and what’s next for the festival. If you want to support the podcast, head over to patreon.com/washedupemo and if you do, I’ll be able to make more of these! Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #132 - Anthony Green (Circa Survive, Saosin, The Sound of Animals Fighting)
Today we welcome Anthony Green from Circa Survive, Saosin and the Sound of Animals Fighting. My history with Anthony goes back to the early days of Circa Survive and working alongside him at Equal Vision Records for the Juturna and On Letting Go album releases. As the years passed, we stayed in touch and would see each other as you do when a band rolls through town. Anthony was always super into what I was doing with Washed Up Emo and check in when I’d post something about The Promise Ring or Braid. Anthony came along at an amazing time for punk rock and rode the wave with Circa Survive to heights not afforded many and still can play anywhere in the world for his solo material or with Circa Survive. In the hour we chatted, we got to catch up in thoughts on emo, sneaking up on stage to ask Thursday, who he didn’t know, about joining a certain band. Plus, how I forced Circa Survive to do a Fuse TV event for a girl that really just wanted Panic! at the Disco and where he is now and what he would have said to himself 10 years ago. #131 - Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids)
Today we welcome back Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids. Matt and the boys have a new EP, Kicker, on Polyvinyl Records, out this week and it was time to get Matt back on to chat. We discuss how The Get Up Kids have stayed together all these years, their knack for writing EPs, I get caught saying I liked Jim’s songs better and you’ll hear why I owe Matt $25 for doing the podcast. Finally, we hear about more recordings happening and what that means about a full album. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. #130 - Dave Diem (Twelve Hour Turn, LAPêCHE)
Today we welcome Dave Diem from Twelve Hour Turn and LAPêCHE. Twelve Hour Turn were an amazing post-hardcore band from Florida from 1997-2002. You may know them from their LP with I Hate Myself or 7" with Engine Down. My personal favorite is their LP The Victory of Flight. Dave and I chat about his time in Twelve Hour Turn, how independent music shaped him, why the band broke up and what led to LAPêCHE and the feeling of making music after a 10 year absence. #129 - Henderson Cole (Entertainment lawyer and founder of The Alternative)
When Henderson read about bands getting screwed by Victory Records in the news, he thought he could do something about it. So he actually went to law school. In this episode you’ll learn about how Henderson got into law, where his DIY roots started, and why he founded The Alternative. This is also a crash course about what things bands should think about when it comes to a lawyer. I learned a ton on this episode and I think you will too. #128 - Susie Ulrey (Pohgoh)
Today we welcome Susie Ulrey from the band Pohgoh. I first heard about the band on the first volume of the Emo Diaries compilation. They were everything I wanted in a band when I was playing music back in the day. Susie and I met up in New York City recently to chat and we discussed her upbringing in Florida, getting into the scene, her crush on Brent with a bowl cut and why a community is so important. We also chat about her living with MS and the many challenges of daily life and trying to continue to make music. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. #127 - Scott Vogel (Terror, Buried Alive, Despair)
Today we welcome Scott Vogel from the band's Despair, Buried Alive and Terror. You’re probably confused right now, hear me out. Scott is a huge emo fan and professed his love for Texas is the Reason, Split Lip and Chris Higdon from Elliott multiple times including a dream scenario for Chris you need to hear in its entirety. Scott also mentions the time he kept singing the chorus of Jimmy Eat World’s "Sweetness" for a whole tour annoying his band. We talk at length about the hardcore scene and how time off from the band both saved the band and the members itself from imploding. I had a blast talking to him and hope you enjoy too. #123 - Buddy Nielsen (Senses Fail)
We talk about Senses Fail's new album "If There Is Light, It Will Find You" and how the band got their start, the crazy time in the mid-00s when everyone was getting signed. Buddy speaks candidly about what bands were thinking as the emo boom took hold in NJ and in other parts of the country and world. A fun chat and one where he didn’t hold back. She started working with Amy Fiddler of Fiddler Records in Florida and has done just about everything running a label of her own which she started with her dad in 2010. #120 - Charles Cardello (BiFocal Media)
If you were around in the 90s and had a live video of a band like Braid or Michigan Fest or picked up a VHS of Actuality of Thought, BiFocal were the ones that did it. Charles has gone on to do a lot of amazing things from those early days of filming some of the best bands in the mid to late 90s. I bought their VHS tape of Actuality of Thought, which was live songs from amazing bands like Braid, Sleepytime Trio, Jejune, The Get Up Kids, The Promise Ring to name a few. Look it up on YouTube if you want to understand what we’ll be talking about. We also talk about filming an entire Krazy Fest and how it may never see the light of day. In the early days, those that had cameras documented a lot of beautiful things that we take for granted with our smartphones. Charles and BiFocal Media did an amazing job of documenting a time period and understanding that this was something needed by bands and the scene. #119 - Arty Shepherd (Saint Vitus Bar, Errortype:11, Mind Over Matter)
Arty was in bands like Bad Trip, Mind Over Matter, World’s Fastest Car, Errortype: 11, Gay for Johnny Depp, Instruction, God Fires Man and Unwed. He’s been running a metal bar/venue called Saint Vitus, in Greenpoint Brooklyn that’s held some legendary shows since opening in 2011. He’s still playing music with a band called Primitive Weapons because obviously, he’s not giving up on the dream. Arty has seen a lot in music and with no punches pulled, tells it how it is. #118 - Unheard Mineral Interview from 1997
I met John Frazier in college when he was working at Tooth and Nail/Solid State Records. We’d nerd out about bands and stayed in touch over the years. Now, he runs an amazing label called Spartan Records. Go support, listen, buy something from the label if you get a chance. Great person and a great friend. Just a few weeks ago, he sends me this Mineral interview out of the blue. I am blown away by it. He told me in a subsequent email that it was a Mineral interview he did 20 years ago while they were on tour with Jimmy Eat World and Sense Field at Twisters in Richmond, Virginia on March 1st, 1997. John was street teaming for Crank! Records at the time and was program director for James Madison University’s radio station WXJM. He was doing the interview for a zine he made for the radio station. The street team participation John did led him to the job at Crank! which started him on his career. The interview is with Chris and Gabe in their van. While John was doing it, Jimmy Eat World was in the middle of their set. Fun things to note for timing, the band had released “The Power of Failing” as was at work on “EndSerending” with the producer Mark Trombino. It’s candid, so I left everything in there. At around 5:35 into the interview, they’re approached by a parking enforcement guy who claims they didn’t pay to park and they go back and forth over the $3 parking fee. Later on in the interview, they recount the whole story to someone else. If there’s any charm or insight into the BS of touring life, that’s it. Hope you enjoy this piece of history and thanks to John for sharing it with Washed Up Emo. Go check out Spartan Records and support John. Remember, this was 1997 so the sound quality, i’ve EQ’d a lot but also it’s 1997, so bear with it and enjoy the sounds of analog for 15 minutes. #110 - Jason Heller (Writer) - Remembering Matt Bellinger (Planes Mistaken for Stars)
Today we welcome Jason Heller, writer for NPR, The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Rolling Stone and Pitchfork. He’s also been a longtime Denver resident who was there at the beginning of the 90s emo era. Little known fact, he was a band called The Blue Ontario with members of Christie Front Drive around then too. He was also very good friends with Matt Bellinger, a member of Planes Mistaken for Stars who recently lost his life. Jason wrote a beautiful piece for the local paper Westword and I thought it would be great to have him on to talk about Denver in the 90s and his memories of Matt. Even if you didn’t know Matt, it’s worth hearing Jason talk about the time period. He speaks with great detail and I found the information so fascinating, I cut myself heavily from the episode. Dan Didier from The Promise Ring, Maritime, Vermont and currently Dramatic Lovers was a huge part of the recently released Jawbreaker documentary “Don’t Break Down.” To find out more about his experience helping make this film a reality and producing, we spoke on the phone while Dan was at the water park with his girls. Also, I recorded a portion of the Blake Schwarzenbach and Dan Didier’s Q&A at the end of a screening recently in Brooklyn. It’s a little hard to hear the questions but you can figure out by the answer what was asked. Apologies for my loud laughs or writing my question down on a piece of paper. #99 - Brett Detar (The Juliana Theory)
Today we welcome Brett Detar from The Juliana Theory. The band recently announced a reunion tour so it was time to get Brett to talk with us on the podcast. Little did I know but Brett and I were both at a Sunny Day Real Estate show NYC back in 2000 and he noticed my Washed Up Emo shirt at SDRE’s reunion in 2009 as well. After my mind was blown with those two facts, Brett and I talked about his past including obsession with Fugazi, his history with Zao and what happened at The Juliana Theory’s first practice. Along the way and more than most guests, Brett was brutally honest with what went wrong with their career. It was really refreshing to have someone just lay out all their cards like that. In the end, the band followed their own muse and caught a ton of heat for it and in my opinion, just a little bit ahead of their time. On episode 97 we welcome Tim Kasher from Cursive, The Good Life and a very successful solo career to boot with a just released album entitled “No Resolution” on 15 Passenger Records. Tim and I chat about his early bands, one that opened up for 311 in high school, his desperation to be on Caulfield Records, the influence of Fugazi on him and what he’d love to be doing in the future and at 70 years old. I couldn’t be happier to check Cursive off the list of bands for the podcast and after speaking with Tim, it was worth the wait. #96 - Cameron Boucher (Sorority Noise)
Sorority Noise, wrote to me, the album of the year. It’s called “You're Not As _____ As You Think” and it’s out March 17th on Triple Crown Records. If you’re listening to this in future, it’s out now. In this episode, lead singer and guitarist Cameron Boucher and I go through the new album track by track, what he can’t sleep without and discuss a band’s place in today’s political climate. Finally we chat about what he’s dreaming about next. #95 - Jay Adelberg (El 'N' Gee Club, Hot Topic)
Who is Jay Adelberg? Jay booked the El 'N' Gee club in Connecticut from 1991-2001 and was one of the first to jump on the emo boom by booking The Get Up Kids, Saves the Day early on and even Brand New’s first show in CT. Jay then transitioned to Hot Topic in 2001 as the music buyer. Simply, if you bought music in Hot Topic from 01 to 2012, he was responsible. Jay talks about the changes Hot Topic had to make over the years, how he learned from his own mistakes and when he knew it was time to leave the company. This episode is really about going with your passions wherever they take you right. #94 - A Tribute to Jon Bunch
Episode 94, A Tribute to Jon Bunch. To give some context, last year at this time, episode 57 of the podcast with Jon Bunch was to my knowledge the last interview Jon did. It was incredibly sad but also a place for people to learn about Jon forever. I was so honored to have spoken to him and be able to share his story. Last March there was a benefit show in Santa Ana California for Jon’s son Jack. It had an amazing line up of bands and people traveled from all over the world for the show. I had the pleasure of being in southern California for the event and saw first hand the community that came out for Jon. Seizing the moment, a friend of Washed Up Emo, Ed Curley, took it upon himself to interview people in the crowd. From fans, bands and those involved in the event, Ed took time to ask about Jon, the event and what it meant. You’ll hear many common themes and many kind words said about Jon. All walks of life and those that knew him for 30 years or none at all. It was truly a celebration of music, friends and family. #93 - Eric Tobin (Hopeless Records)
Today we welcome Eric Tobin from Hopeless Records. Tobin and I met during my days at Equal Vision and since crossed paths many times over the years. It was high time to have a chat. Recently on the roof of my work during lunch, Tobin and I talked about his history in the business. What was really great about this episode was that It touches on many things young and old bands ask about. A truly deep look into the thoughts and actions of an independent label that’s doing some big things. It’s our little version of This Could Be Your Life. #92 - Mark Trombino (Donut Friend, Producer, Musician)
Episode 92 is with producer, musician and Donut Friend owner Mark Trombino. Mark has had a huge impact on the independent scene not just drumming for Drive Like Jehu but for being a producer, mixer or engineer on some of the most important records of emo. From Boilermaker, Garden Variety, Knapsack, No Knife, Rocket from the Crypt, Mineral, The Jealous Sound, Finch, The Starting Line, Weston, Motion City Soundtrack, Pinback, All Time Low just to name a few… and of course can’t forget his work with Blink-182 and Jimmy Eat World. We discuss growing up in Orange County, CA, his time in college learning how to record plus insight into many of the albums he was a part of and how his talents had to evolve as emo hit the boom in the mid 2000s. I also ask extensively about working with Jimmy Eat World and learn why “Goodbye Sky Harbor” was sixteen minutes. Finally, we spend time talking about his most recent success, Donut Friend. Mark explains how he started the store, the donut puns and the time Ian from Fugazi came into the shop. #87 - Jason Diamond (Author, Rolling Stone Sports Editor)
Welcome to episode 87, today we welcome Rolling Stone sports editor Jason Diamond. His book Searching for John Hughes came out recently and you should read it. Why is he on you might say? Well Jason has some amazing punk/hardcore references in the book and he’s an old hardcore kid! Nuff said. We talk about his sports writing, musical beginnings, struggles in life with abuse, his parents divorce and how the book ties it together beautifully with John Hughes references. As you say, it’s in the family. Nate is also starting a family with his wife and we talk about what advice the other dads in American Football gave him, laundromat etiquette and if his baby is a boy or a girl. I’ve had a chance to listen to the full album it doesn’t sound like anything they’ve done and that’s a good thing. This is a giant leap for not only the band but the independent scene itself. #75 - John Gaviglio (Bear Vs Shark)
Welcome to Episode 75 of the Washed Up Emo podcast, today we welcome John Gaviglio from Bear Vs Shark. Bear Vs Shark are a very personal band to me. I was lucky enough to work with them at Equal Vision Records for their final album “Terrorhawk” in 2005. They were ahead of their time and thankfully as I’ve said countless times, good music will win out. Recently, the dudes in Bear Vs Shark reunited for some shows and to their surprise the response was overwhelming positive. If you know nothing about this band, you might be interested in them after this chat. Note: I did this in a public space so you might hear voices or people working. It shouldn’t be too bad. #63 - Matthew Daniels (poly-graph.co/The Pudding)
I tend to protect the word emo online to a fault. A few months back a site called Polygraph run by Matthew Daniels released a data visualization of what punk bands were considered punk, post, screamo, etc. Based on Spotify playlists. The emo category consisted of mostly mid 00s era stuff with some alt rock, etc. Just way off. It went like this. I tweeted at him angrily. He wrote back nicely. We talked on the phone, then he came to my apt to talk me off the ledge. While you’re listening check out Polygraph (poly-graph.co). This was an insanely interesting conversation about data. #57 - Jon Bunch (Sense Field, Further Seems Forever, Lucky Scars, War Generation, Reason to Believe)
I will never forget that the first thing Jon did when he picked up the phone for the podcast. He asked about my life and took the time to find out more about Washed Up Emo before the interview even started. I was blown away at how humble he was but also so proud of his life's work. It’s an honor to be able to present a small slice of Jon that many of his friends and family know so well. I count myself included. This podcast is supposed to be evergreen. You can listen in 5 years or in 10 years and know a good chunk of that band or era and some context to the scene and a way to look back but also look ahead. Jon was that last point to a T. He was so happy talking about the history but also his new music and what was next. Sadly, this was the last interview Jon did. I can only hope those close or those who have no idea who Jon Bunch was take and learn something from one of the most important voices in not only the independent scene but music in general. I am eternally grateful Jon took the time to talk with me about his life that will thankfully live on in aural form so someone can stumble upon Jon's music forever. #52 - Jonah Bayer (Writer, Musician)
Welcome to Episode 52 of the Washed Up Emo Podcast, this podcast is part of the Jabberjaw Media Podcast network. You can find out about all the shows on JabberjawMedia.com. This episode I talk to writer/musician Jonah Bayer. You’ve possibly read his work in Law of Inertia, most certainly his work at Alternative Press or quite possibly a joke said by Steven on Steven’s Untitled Rock Show. If not, his popular podcast Going Off Track or you've probably seen him in the band United Nations playing guitar… Now that I think of it, you can’t get away from him. That aside… If you’ve ever thought about writing about your favorite music and living to tell about it and keep your friends, well most of them, you’ll certainly enjoy this episode. #41 - Zach and Holly Lind (The Wretched Desert, Jimmy Eat World)
Jimmy Eat World are taking off the better part of a year. What does the drummer do with that down time after 20+ years on the road? Zach Lind spends as much time as he can with his wife Holly and in time, they started making music together. I talk to both of them about their side project The Wretched Desert, faith, thoughts on emo and how they kept in touch in those early days of Jimmy Eat World. #37 - Lars Gotrich (NPR Music)
Lars Gotrich from NPR Music has hands down written and supported some of the best up and coming bands from the independent scene today. A fan his writing already, his recommendations on music were always a required listen. Halfway through the recording of the podcast I realized, some of our musical upbringing overlapped. It became clear then why I connected so well to his writing. Lars is a true independent voice on music among a quickly crowded scene of clickbait opinions. #35 - CMJ Emo Revival Panel
What happens when you put five people in a room to discuss the emo revival? Lots and lots of laughs. Late last year, CMJ asked Washed Up Emo to moderate a panel to discuss the revival and we were up the task. For the panel we had a great group of young and old perspectives with Norman Brannon (Texas is the Reason, Collect Records), Kevin Duquette (Topshelf Records), Sean Moran (No Sleep Records) and Brian Pacris (The Syndicate, co-host of #EmoNightNYC). #34 - Chris Carrabba (Dashboard Confessional)
When you have a musical career as long as Chris Carrabba, there's bound to be some reflection. I sat down with Chris face to face in New York City to discuss his musical life. This was largely unedited with many pauses and air left between question and answer. #33 - Geoff Farina (Karate, Exit Verse)
Geoff Farina of Karate’s first response to my request to be on the podcast wasn’t the best. Truth be told, he’s not a fan of his music from the late 90s. Ha, what a place to start. Years ago I had done Karate’s first interview ever for my high school zine and had completely ridiculous questions then for a 16 year old so at 36 I’d hope to be a bit better. Geoff couldn’t have been more pleasant and comfortable with himself, his music and life. Maybe it’s age or wisdom or just something someone have in themselves but I felt each moment I was learning something from the discussion. Through Geoff’s days in DC, his thoughts on emo, conserving music for future generations with his uncle and his new band Exit Verse, it was a pleasure to chat with Geoff. #31 - Sergie Loobkoff (Samiam)
Growing up a punk and metal fan in San Francisco doesn't seem like a fit for the podcast. But Sergie cut a different line through music to be a part of Samiam, one of the most revered bands on the west coast. I caught up with Sergie after the Knapsack reunion tour where we spoke about the 80s thrash scene happening in LA, his time with Solea and touring with Texas is the Reason plus what it meant to tour with Knapsack to such great audiences. Sergie also reads the worst review ever for Knapsack that I couldn't stop laughing about, what he really wants to do other than music and what two wishes he would ask a genie. Hope you enjoy. Hey, we are now part of it. One of the most requested guests, Travis Shettel from Piebald, sat down with me a few months back to chat about the band's history. We spoke about the Boston scene, their first name Dork Knob and some of the reasons for Piebald's break up. We also get an update on Travis' latest music endeavor with the Past Haunts. Frank Turner couldn’t wait to talk as he bounded to the back of the tour bus before his New York City gig at Terminal 5 late last year. When settled, he proclaimed that he never gets to talk about emo in any interview. Good start to say the least. After a full tour and pushing his latest album “Tape Deck Heart,” he relaxed instantly and in turn we had a great conversation. We spoke about his time with Kneejerk and Million Dead, his upbringing in the UK and how he found out about emo and hardcore plus Mineral’s influence and his favorite emo band I Hate Myself. #28 - Mike Kinsella (Cap'n Jazz, American Football, Owen)
Recently, I got together with Mike Kinsella for the podcast who in these circles needs no introduction. Alas, for those unaware, he has been a part of some of the most revered bands in the scene from the last 90s through today. His work with Cap'n Jazz, American Football, Owls, Owen and Their / They're / There and Joan of Arc has influenced countless individuals and bands to pursue music. We talk about his upbringing, using maps while touring Europe, an upcoming American Football release, renaming "Never Meant" so it's funnier when someone yells it out at an Owen show and of course, the future. One thing is for sure, there is plenty of music left in Mr. Kinsella. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

#27 - Jim Adkins and Eric Richter (Jimmy Eat World, Christie Front Drive)
After meeting Eric Richter from Christie Front Drive through a friend in the early 2000s, I got to ask all the questions I had pent up since high school about the early days of Christie Front Drive touring and connecting with the likes of Mineral, Boys Life and Jimmy Eat World. I was always intrigued about that connection with Jimmy Eat World and after interviewing Jim Adkins for the podcast, I couldn't wait to get them both in a room. Schedules aligned this year and almost instinctively I stepped out of the way on this one. No need for questions when two friends get in the room. In this episode, you will hear Eric and Jim discuss how they did their first 7" together, the Capitol Records years for Jimmy Eat World and plenty of stories from the road. #26 - Colby Mancasola (Knapsack)
On this episode, I chat with Knapsack drummer Colby Mancasola about the origins of the band, working with Mark Trombino, never having a website and hearing the “next big thing” thrown around in a post-Nirvana world. Plus, find out what the famous record executive Jimmy Iovine said to Knapsack after a showcase in Los Angeles. It’s exactly what you think he would say. It was great to hear their story told and to learn how many bands that we know and love all intersected at one point on tour or in conversation with Knapsack. A true connector in the scene before social media and a 4 inch screen took over our lives. #25 - Chris Conley (Saves the Day)
Saves the Day, at it since 1997, has had their share of ups and downs but through it all they struck a chord with fans and still do to this day. I had the pleasure of having Saves the Day be my one and only band I ever booked. Sold out pizza restaurant in the middle of North Carolina after only booking one boysetsfire show. Take that Facebook Events. Also, vivid memories of worn out cassette tapes of "Can't Slow Down" and "Through Being Cool" that are still so near and dear to my heart. Chris was gracious enough to sit down with WashedUpEmo.com prior to their latest headlining tour in support of the new self-titled album. We spoke about Saves the Day's first show, the term "Emo Rock Stars," meanings behind the song "Shoulder to The Wheel," who designed one of their classic album covers and Chris' favorite Sean McGrath memory. #20 - Matt Pryor (The Get Up Kids)
It was an absolute honor to have Mr. Matt Pryor from The Get Up Kids be a part of the podcast. I just noticed after listening back to this episode that the only person left to interview from my opening musical montage is Jeremy Enigk. What a trip it's been. Matt was great to chat with and even had to scold his kids who you can hear at times during the interview. We dove into the first time Matt sang live in front of someone, Kansas City, Boy's Life, ripping off "Static Prevails" and why bands do 10 year anniversaries. Matt also mentioned his opinion on the word "emo" and throughout the podcast you can hear his voice ring with truth that also transcends to the bands he was in and his way of life. #15 - Chris Simpson (Mineral, The Gloria Record, Mountain Time)
The first day I started this podcast, a goal was to have Chris Simpson on. Through a great network of friends, it went down earlier this month and I couldn't have been happier. We had a few technical difficulties but we got to catch up on a bunch of things including the new crop of labels like Count Your Lucky Stars, The Gloria Record possibly reuniting and the amount of unreleased music that could see the light of day. Case in point, Chris has sent me exclusively three unreleased/unheard songs. One entitled "Conclusions" is featured within the podcast. Washed Up Emo is a partner of the Double Elvis podcast network.
