I thought it’d be funny to interview them in order asking similar questions about the album, their feelings on resisting this record, the remixing of the album from J Robbins, and touring. Today on the podcast, we welcome M.C. Taylor of Hiss Golden Messenger and Ex-Ignota. They may have never crossed your path. That’s ok. Upon further inspection, a singer songwriter signed to Merge may bring more questions than answers. We met through a post I made on Instagram. I went, why does that name seem familiar. I reached out and after recognizing the name of his old band on Ebullition called Ex-Ignota, which were a hardcore band from the 90s in Goleta/Santa Barbara area. Fittingly, I took a drive up recently to see him perform in Santa Barbara and speak in person for the podcast. MC was insanely generous with his time and even shouted out the podcast to the crowd during the show. You’ll hear about how M.C. had house shows that would make anyone yearn for a time machine and a love for the early days of emo that was super deep and I learned a ton from him about his position in the scene and where he is today and how it shaped him. His past may be in hardcore and emo with his pedal full on a now full time career as a musician as Hiss Golden Messenger, which we talk about at length. Today on the podcast we welcome John Dugan from Chisel, which we talk extensively about and they’re about to do some reunion shows for Numero Group and reissues for some classic 90s that crossed over into many genres. One that I didn’t realize happened that I do a podcast about was emo. This band is really close to my heart too. I found this band through John’s younger brother Mike. I met Mike my freshman year on campus after someone on our hall said someone down the hall likes weird music too. The first record Mike played for me was Chisel. We became fast friends and ended up seeing Chisel in 1997 with Karate at a house show in Chapel Hill. Little did we know the band would dissolve soon after that show and that would be the end of it. Years later, I’ve spoken to John through his various musical endeavors or at family functions when I’d see the Dugans in Northern Virginia. Full circle moment and happy to have John on to talk about Chisel and his many musical band over the years. We touch on his experience with Revolution Summer, Amanda MacKaye recommending he buy an album that went on to change history, his time at the City Paper and the opportunities that Brough about and the post-Nirvana boom of labels trying to sign Chisel. Today we welcome Tim Kasher, again! He’s been on prior as a guest talking about his entire career and also was included in volume 2 of the Anthology of Emo book series, now we dive even deeper. This time we dive into the absolute classic “Domestica.” Released in June way back in 2000, this album released posthumously, really was an evolution of their last two records and started to almost restart the band out of chaos and unrest. The album, rumored to be about a divorce, as you will hear, is close but also far away as well. Tim was generous was his time to dive really deep into the album, cover, and every single track. Including some about Braces, a short lived band that was a 3 piece that you’ll hear on the reissue. Gared and I recently connected after he heard an earlier podcast, episode 110 to be exact, with writer Jason Heller about the impact of Planes Mistaken for Stars and the untimely death of band member Matt Bellinger. Gared hadn’t heard this episode until recently and reached out to me after he listened. We ended up talking a bit and he agreed to come on the podcast. This episode now takes on a little extra weight. The interview, done in May of this year was before Gared was diagnosed in late August with stage 3 Esophagus cancer. A legend in the punk scene and someone that I’ve been following since 1999 when I first heard Strike Anywhere and their brand of political punk from Richmond, VA. When Thomas from Strike Anywhere first jumped on the phone with me said he was shy and not really a good talker. Well, he was completely wrong and I just sat back for most of this interview and listened to the master who has been going to shows since the 80s. he talked about learning how to put on shows at a barn on the outskirts of Richmond Virginia, and spoke passionately about what first bands he saw that shaped his life and his previous band Inquisition. I did a lot of editing myself out, yes, even the giggles. It was funny thought listening back to this interview and going, “yea don’t need to hear me talk there.” I was absolutely honored to have someone like Thomas take time to chat about the history of the “scene” in quotes and what shapes the scene and yourself. We of course talk about emo, don’t worry, but as you know, my love of hardcore runs deep so to hear him talk about the Richmond, Virginia scene, his life now and the band Strike Anywhere is still around! Alex Dunham, singer and guitarist for the band and I connected in NYC right before the pandemic took hold in early March. When I look back on my life and what albums had an immediate impact on me from the 90s, one jumps out that I felt never got their due. The band was M.I.J and the singer of that band, Jeff Hanson. Jeff tragically died in 2009 and left a wealth of material from three solo albums on Kill Rock Stars to an album and EP on the legendary Caulfield Records. I wanted to find a couple of folks to talk about Jeff and his life, stories, and legacy. A few months ago, I asked a couple of prior podcast guests Brian Lowit from Lovitt Records and now Dischord Records and John Davis from Q and Not U, if they thought an in-person interview could happen. Through their help and a little timing of a personal wedding in DC set this plan in motion. As this podcast gets into its 8th year with no signs of slowing down, I thought it was time to have the person partly responsible for why I first got into straightedge, punk, hardcore, and the DIY ethos I continue to carry through during my day job in the music industry at large. A documentary was released a few years ago called "Don’t Break Down," about Jawbreaker. Fun fact: Dan Didier, drummer for the Promise Ring, Maritime and Vermont was the producer of the film! After seeing a screening of the film, I was fascinated at how much footage they had of Jawbreaker. I found out later from Dan that Adam was the one that has been saving everything. When I approached Adam to do the podcast a couple of years ago, Adam said we would need to wait as they were just about to announce all of the reunion shows. Recently in Brooklyn, Adam and I finally sat down to talk. We discuss where these archival/documentation thoughts started in his life and how the video store that he owned for years was feeding that same itch. We also discuss what it’s like being in Jawbreaker now and not being as neurotic about taking photos or saving the flyers. In the same light, Adam is fully realizing how important these things are later and the love for his band is how everyone should think about their own band’s legacy, big or small. Bonus, we talk about emo and how Adam didn’t hear them being called emo until after they broke up. First, when I moved to NYC, the Brooklyn thing was about to blow up and I was working at a label nearby a lot of these venues in the city where bands like the Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and others cut their teeth. Longwave were active around the same time as well and I loved them. Second, I was and still am, obsessed with shoe gaze. The similarities to the long droning emo songs that I also can’t stop emulating is directly related to my love of shoe gaze. I’d happily quit my job and join a shoe gaze band tomorrow. Hit me up. Third, I find out a half hour in that a past band Steve was in, Scout, toured with Sunny Day Real Estate! He waited 30 minutes to tell me that. Steve has a very funny story about Jeremy Enigk you’ll want to listen for. To be honest, this one is sorta for me. Over the years, Steve and I have crossed paths through friends and music here in NYC. Today welcome Erik Ratensperger from the legendary screamo band Jeromes Dream. Jeromes Dream were around for a very short time from 1997 to 2001 born out of the Connecticut hardcore scene. They had a unique way of playing by way of the singer Jeff Smith refusing to use a microphone for shows. Also, the band was known for playing very short sets, usually no longer than 10 minutes. Pretty unique. These guys are right along side Pg.99, Orchid, Saetia in the early screamo era. If you’re unaware, it’s well worth a dive into their career. The band is celebrating 20 years of The Moon My Saddle with a few select shows and it was time to get David on. This podcast episode is a lot about redemption and letting things go as times pass. One of those is an amazing quote on The Moon My Saddle when it first came out in Alternative Press. It says “David Moore on this record makes Huey Lewis sound like the king of the Delta Blues.” Then, 10 years later, Alternative Press does a big feature/interview on the band. Some things are ahead of their time. David’s father drove his motorcycle across the United States to Los Angeles, California to try and make it as an actor. It never materialized and he came back to Indiana to raise his family. David also made that same decision after Chamberlain broke up, deciding to hang up the music and stop chasing the dream and get on with his life. It wasn’t entirely that simple as you’ll hear. We talk about David’s approach to music, the initial response to “The Moon My Saddle,” the band’s downfall and what David did after that. Also how he’s looking at the upcoming 20 year anniversary shows from that album as an adult versus the boy that first toured those songs. “If this was just about nostalgia, we are self-aware enough to know that we wouldn’t want to do it.” Not a bad way to think about it. I met John Frazier in college when he was working at Tooth and Nail/Solid State Records. We’d nerd out about bands and stayed in touch over the years. Now, he runs an amazing label called Spartan Records. Go support, listen, buy something from the label if you get a chance. Great person and a great friend. Just a few weeks ago, he sends me this Mineral interview out of the blue. I am blown away by it. He told me in a subsequent email that it was a Mineral interview he did 20 years ago while they were on tour with Jimmy Eat World and Sense Field at Twisters in Richmond, Virginia on March 1st, 1997. John was street teaming for Crank! Records at the time and was program director for James Madison University’s radio station WXJM. He was doing the interview for a zine he made for the radio station. The street team participation John did led him to the job at Crank! which started him on his career. The interview is with Chris and Gabe in their van. While John was doing it, Jimmy Eat World was in the middle of their set. Fun things to note for timing, the band had released “The Power of Failing” as was at work on “EndSerending” with the producer Mark Trombino. It’s candid, so I left everything in there. At around 5:35 into the interview, they’re approached by a parking enforcement guy who claims they didn’t pay to park and they go back and forth over the $3 parking fee. Later on in the interview, they recount the whole story to someone else. If there’s any charm or insight into the BS of touring life, that’s it. I tend to protect the word emo online to a fault. A few months back a site called Polygraph run by Matthew Daniels released a data visualization of what punk bands were considered punk, post, screamo, etc. Based on Spotify playlists. The emo category consisted of mostly mid 00s era stuff with some alt rock, etc. Just way off. It went like this. I tweeted at him angrily. He wrote back nicely. I will never forget that the first thing Jon did when he picked up the phone for the podcast. He asked about my life and took the time to find out more about Washed Up Emo before the interview even started. I was blown away at how humble he was but also so proud of his life's work. It’s an honor to be able to present a small slice of Jon that many of his friends and family know so well. I count myself included. This podcast is supposed to be evergreen. You can listen in 5 years or in 10 years and know a good chunk of that band or era and some context to the scene and a way to look back but also look ahead. Jon was that last point to a T. He was so happy talking about the history but also his new music and what was next. Sadly, this was the last interview Jon did. I can only hope those close or those who have no idea who Jon Bunch was take and learn something from one of the most important voices in not only the independent scene but music in general. I am eternally grateful Jon took the time to talk with me about his life that will thankfully live on in aural form so someone can stumble upon Jon's music forever. Growing up a punk and metal fan in San Francisco doesn't seem like a fit for the podcast. Frank Turner couldn’t wait to talk as he bounded to the back of the tour bus before his New York City gig at Terminal 5 late last year. When settled, he proclaimed that he never gets to talk about emo in any interview. Good start to say the least. Recently, I got together with Mike Kinsella for the podcast who in these circles needs no introduction. After meeting Eric Richter from Christie Front Drive through a friend in the early 2000s, I got to ask all the questions I had pent up since high school about the early days of Christie Front Drive touring and connecting with the likes of Mineral, Boys Life and Jimmy Eat World. I was always intrigued about that connection with Jimmy Eat World and after interviewing Jim Adkins for the podcast, I couldn't wait to get them both in a room. Schedules aligned this year and almost instinctively I stepped out of the way on this one. No need for questions when two friends get in the room. In this episode, you will hear Eric and Jim discuss how they did their first 7" together, the Capitol Records years for Jimmy Eat World and plenty of stories from the road. Saves the Day, at it since 1997, has had their share of ups and downs but through it all they struck a chord with fans and still do to this day.
