This program is part of New Music USA’s web magazine NewMusicBox “Guest Editor series”, which aims to celebrate a plurality of voices from across the nation and will feature exclusive content written, produced, or commissioned by a rotating artist or organization. The series kicks off with dublab. NewMusicBox, edited by Frank J. Oteri, amplifies creators and organizations who are building a vibrant future for new music in all its forms, and has provided a vital platform for creators to speak about issues relevant to them in their own words since 1999.
The dublab partnership features weekly content from at least 15 different voices through January 2023, presented in conversations, DJ mixes, articles, and live performances all exploring the current landscape of music composition.
The Guest Editor is the first such series in the magazine’s 23-year history and reflects New Music USA’s aim to deepen its impact across the many diverse music communities across the United States. This aim is also demonstrated by NewMusicBox’s ongoing “Different Cities, Different Voices” feature that spotlights music creation hubs across the nation.

Listen in and watch Silent Servant’s special DJ set – with visuals by Eva Aguila – created specially for dublab’s 21st anniversary celebration.
WATCH HERE
Silent Servant’s prolific output as a producer and artist has laid the groundwork for much of the most ambitious and forward thinking electronic music of today. As a member of the now defunct Sandwell District, he helped force the hand of change with uncompromising ability. And still, he continues to do so with even greater strength and success.
While insincerity remains the safety of many, Silent Servant’s own productions are brutally honest and resolute, rendering irrelevant those mongering for light. Deeply pensive and forward thinking, his sound is marked by a distinct blend of the disparate and divergent. An appreciation of warehouse techno, industrial noise and post-punk are evident, yet challenged and reworked to form a uniquely modern style – a vitality so controlled and concentrated that it captivates immediately.

“Dimensions of Voice” highlights 3 artists who use voice as a central instrument; as landscape, sound bath, conjuring device, and fluid transmission between worlds, binaries, time and space.
An extension of the Art of Performance Series, “Dimensions of Voice” is a broadcast of sets by Colin Self, Odeya Nini and Anna Oxygen, all who engage in composing practices that center voice tripping, voice improvisation, and voice as a cosmic force for community connection.
Anna Oxygen is an artist whose work spans performance, sound, technology and interactivity. As a solo musician she frequently performs a mix of improvised vocalizations and narrative electronic dance pieces. She is also a founding member of media performance collective Cloud Eye Control, creating interactive and time-based work that addresses speculative futures and the impact of technology on the human psyche. She frequently works collaboratively and has a special interest in connectivity across platforms and dimensions (3D to 2D to the astral place and back again) She has performed nationally and internationally at a number of venues including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, MOMA PS1, Festival A Mil, Chile and The New Museum (NYC) among others.

Micachu & the Shapes are one of the funnest bands to watch perform. We trust you’ll open up your imagination wide as you’re listening to this great band fly through some tunes full of quirkiness and punch. Think of the incredible gestures they made while making these sounds. Maybe they are beating drums, ukulele and keys in a jumpy stomping jam or maybe they’re floating far above the Earth dropping notes to the tops of trees below so that birds may form nests for their young to fly skyward and flap a wing hello back at Micachu. Or possibly these sounds are evoking images of a robotic roadrunner looping around a track as the audience stomps and mashes the floor with enthusiastic cheers of encouragement. Whatever your visions may involve we hope you enjoy this “sprout session” from one of our favorite bands.
Pregnant is the bottomless and humble musical interest and hobby of Daniel Trudeau. The project has existed for over a decade in all plausible slews and fashions from a solo incarnation on into a quintet and is always presented first and foremost as Electronic Pop, although that definition cannot and will not fully sum a conclusive aural understanding of the material. Trudeau invites his eclectic imagination, along with whatever available retinue of performers, to imbue his music with a contextually familiar sound and for the purpose of pulling in even the most bereft listeners; domesticating them, for lack of a better word, to go on a proper listening journey.
Get slimed by one of Philly’s finest! Kurt Vile is indeed a cat to slither to. His slinky slank sound is super soul for the generation on hold. Stop, don’t get up from that couch! Plop down and put on something nice like these “sprout session” sounds. Kurt cruised into dublab to play some fine sunny stoned songs. So please enjoy and when this cat is in your hood sway on over and say hello.

FROM THE VAULTS: J Rocc live at the Root Down
This live mix from J Rocc, Beat Junkies founder, DJ, and producer was recorded at the world famous Root Down party that happened every week in LA during the late ’90s and early ’00s. DJs like Loslito, Miles, Cut Chemist, DJ Dusk, Peanut Butter Wolf, and others could be heard spinning the best in hip-hop, funk, soul, roots, jazz and latin music. During its lifespan, the club drew indie hip-hop groups, funk bands, conscious MCs and athletic turn turntablists from around the state, and was an authentic piece of LAs local culture for nearly a decade.

FROM THE VAULTS: Low Res From The Plug Research DATs
Joins us for a live set of wild, nearly undefinable future jazz, hip-hop and experimental electronics by early Plug Research, Sublime Records and Mille Plateaux artist, Danny Zelonky aka Low Res. Likely recorded between ’98 and ’00, this set is a lost treasure created by an artist crucial to the 90s electronic music scene in Los Angeles. Low Res and other artists, such as Allen Avenessian, Joe Babylon, and Dimitri Fergadis aka Pthalocyanine, would all release music on Plug Research prior to second-generation artists like Daedelus and Flying Lotus (who came to define the label for some time).
