Mark Margolis, a veteran actor who had hundreds of credits dating back to the 1970s and was arguably best known for his role of cartel don Hector "Tio" Salamanca on the television shows Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, passed away on Thursday at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City after a brief illness. Margolis's performance on those shows earned him an Emmy nomination. He had 83 years.
His son, Morgan Margolis, who is the CEO of Knitting Factory Entertainment, made the announcement of his passing. According to Morgan Margolis, both he and Mark's wife Jacqueline were present at the moment that Mark passed away in bed.Margolis was born on November 26, 1939 in Philadelphia, and she attended Temple University for a short period of time before traveling to New York City to pursue acting. Her initial training was from Stella Adler at the Actors Studio, and her following training came from Lee Strasberg and Barbara Loden. Margolis was born on November 26, 1939.
Margolis, who credited Adler as a "larger than life" influence on his work, began his career on stage, including a production of Infidel Caesar in 1962 on Broadway, which was a Broadway show based on Shakespeare's Julius Caesar. Margolis credited Adler as being a "larger than life" impact on his work. Margolis immediately launched Blue Dome, a touring theatrical company that produced avant-garde performances including Antonin Artaud's The Conquest of Mexico at colleges and universities around the United States. The play closed during previews, and Margolis shortly founded Blue Dome.
After moving back to New York, Margolis performed in more than 50 off-Broadway plays, some of which were titled Uncle Sam and The Golem. Later in his career, he focused on television and film, but he never lost his devotion to the stage. In 2010, he portrayed Bernie Madoff in a regional production of Imagining Madoff, and in 2014, he appeared in Tony Kushner's The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide to Capitalism and Socialism with a Key to the Scriptures at the Berkeley Repertory Theater. Five years later, he gave a performance in A Bright Room Called Day, written by Kushner, at The Public Theater in New York.
In addition to Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, Margolis has worked on the television shows The Equalizer, Oz, and Kings, as well as the American Horror Story: Asylum episode on FX. He has appeared as a guest on a number of different television shows, including Crossing Jordan, Californication, Person of Interest, Gotham, and Showtime's The Affair. The most recent time we saw Margolis was on Season 2 of the Showtime series Your Honor, where he played the role of Mafia kingpin Carmine Conti.In 2012, Margolis was nominated for the award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Tio in the television series Breaking Bad.In the world of cinema, Margolis is most likely most remembered for his role as Alberto "The Shadow" in Scarface and for his performances in a number of films directed by Darren Aronofsky, such as Noah, Black Swan, The Wrestler, and Pi, among others.
The most recent film to feature Margolis was Broken Soldier, which was directed by Matthew Coppola and starred Sophie Turner, Ray Liotta, and Ivana Milicevic.
His wife Jacqueline Margolis, his son Morgan Margolis and his wife Heide Margolis, their grandchildren Ben, Aidan, and Henry Margolis, as well as his brother Jerome and his wife Ann Margolis, all survive him.
The memorial service and funeral are going to be held privately by the family.
