明嘉靖四十四年（1565年），廣州構築外城。 今一德路為「新城」南城牆所在地，新城八城門中，今一德路地段有五仙門、靖海門，城門外則為珠江。 清朝兩廣總督署就設在該地段（今石室）。 咸豐六年（1865年），英法軍艦炮轟總督署，府衙夷為平地，其後法教會在府衙廢址建起天主教聖心堂、學校及慈善堂。

It is one of the cathedrals of the Catholic Archdiocese of Guangzhou. The church was built in 1863 and completed in 1888, which took 25 years. Since all the walls and pillars of the church are made of granite, it is also called the Stone Chamber or the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in the Stone Chamber and the Stone Chamber Catholic Church. In 1996, it was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit.
The foundation of the church was started on June 28, 1861, the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and completed in 1863. A grand foundation-laying ceremony was held on December 8 of the same year, the Day of the Immaculate Conception. The surrounding streets were decorated and attracted a large number of people. A stone from Jerusalem and a kilogram of soil from Rome were placed under the two foundation stones to show that Christianity was founded in Jerusalem in the east and rose in Rome in the west. The words "Jerusalem" were engraved on the two foundation stones. 1863" and "Roma 1863".
