The IRS just released a fresh list showing each trim of each model that may qualify for a tax credit in 2023. Each trim of model is listed with the MSRP cap associated with said model. Although this is great news to have an updated, official list, there is some bad news for Tesla Model Y reservation holders.
To start with, this list is compiled by the IRS from Manufacturers who have provided written direction on their intent to become a qualified manufacturer of an EV. These manufacturers must then list out each vehicle, and trim, and those details will be used to determine what vehicle class each is, and which MSRP cap is appropriate.
Previously, we had been looking at the EPA website for guidance on what vehicle classification would likely be. In some shakeups, the Ford Mach E now is listed as an SUV on EPA website, as is the Tesla Model Y and the VW Id.4. Unfortunately, the Secretary has given guidance that would eliminate nearly all of these from qualifying as an SUV, and reducing their respective MSRP caps from $80k down to $55K.
Most notably in this list is the changes we are now seeing in the Tesla Model Y. As it turns out, the Tesla Model Y will only qualify for the $80k MSRP if it is equipped with 7 passenger configuration. If it is a 5 passenger configuration, it will be limited to the $55k MSRP cap, meaning it will not qualify for any tax credits.
Interestingly enough, if you look over at the VW Id.4, 4 of the 6 configurations are limited to $55k MSRP. However, when you look at the 2 AWD configurations, they qualify for the $80k MSRP cap. All VW Id.4's only come with 5 seat configurations, and all Tesla Model Y's come with AWD, so it is impossible to figure out what exactly constitutes an SUV at this time.
It is extremely likely that this will be challenged very soon, and that changes will continue to happen to this list in the coming weeks and months. Keep an eye on the IRS website listed below for updates as they happen.
