She Runs Ultras is about (yup, you guessed it) running ultras. Lots of other running podcasts out there are full of gear & race reviews and interviews with the experts telling unrelatable stories about their record breaking times and super human feats. Now…don’t get me wrong, I’ve learned some great stuff from those podcasts...But what about those of us that aren’t getting paid to do this?Those of us that are mid to back of the pack runners?And those of us that have never won a damn thing? What was out there for us? Yeah, I couldn’t find it - so I decided to make it! And it just so happens that I’m getting geared up to start training for some races in 2021.     Ep. 192 - This Is My Fatal Flaw When Choosing Races

    One of my fatal flaws is that when I'm considering a race, I tend to evaluate whether other not I can do it based on my fitness right then in that moment.

    I think: "Could I do this race right now?"

    99% of the time, the answer is NO (obviously!) because I'm usually picking races when it's my off season or when I'm taking a break so while I might be fit, I'm certainly not race ready!

    I'm asking myself the wrong question when trying to decide if I should do a race or not.

    So today I want to share some better questions that you can use to help keep you from following suit and adopting my fatal flaw!

    Here they are:

  • Do I have enough lead time (to train)?
  • Does it challenge me in a new, different, or exciting way?
  • Is it a stretch or a strain?
  • What aspect of my training will I need to focus on in order to feel more confident in my ability to complete this race?

    Ep. 184 - "Anyone else lost without a training plan?"

    Allison from the Run Your First 50k Facebook group posted this a couple weeks ago:

    "Anyone else feeling lost without a training plan?

    As some of you might remember, I ran my first 50K at the end of April. And then I did a trail Ragnar and another race or two that didn’t necessarily require specific training.

    But what I’ve found is that I kind of feel lost without a training plan. I trained solo and did the requisite Zone 2 for my 50K, and now I am too slow for most social running. And life has been busy enough (kid going to college, another kid going to college, an ongoing house maintenance issue, etc) that, without the commitment of a training plan, I don’t prioritize my running.

    I’m dipping my toe back in by pre-scheduling some runs, but it feels lackluster without a training plan.

    Back when I first started doing ultras, I had no clue about either one…

    I mean, I had heard of heart rate zones but I was thoroughly confused about how to integrate them into my training, so I didn’t!

    Back when I was training for road marathons, I used to come home at the end of my long weekend runs, collapse on my couch, and sleep for hours.

    Physically exhausted, my body would ache all over for days, and I was convinced that there was no way I would make it the full 26.2 on race day.

    This is exactly what happened to me this past weekend. My goal was to go 16 miles in 4 hours, but when I had only covered 3-ish in the first hour....well I knew the math wasn't going to add up.

    She Runs Ultras

    She Runs Ultras is about (yup, you guessed it) running ultras.

    Lots of other running podcasts out there are full of gear & race reviews and interviews with the experts telling unrelatable stories about their record breaking times and super human feats.

    Now…don’t get me wrong, I’ve learned some great stuff from those podcasts...

    But what about those of us that aren’t getting paid to do this?
    Those of us that are mid to back of the pack runners?
    And those of us that have never won a damn thing?

    What was out there for us? Yeah, I couldn’t find it - so I decided to make it!

    And it just so happens that I’m getting geared up to start training for some races in 2021.

    So throughout this series, I’ll share what really happens when a typical, non-professional runner takes on the challenge of running an ultra.
