Do you know what my favourite supernatural creature is? It’s a werewolf! In European folklore; werewolves are humans who are able to turn a wolf at night and return to human form by day. Some change shape at will while some do not, and usually it is under the light of a full moon.

Just outside Indianapolis; Indiana in the United States is Fox Hollow Farm, that is said to be haunted by its brutal past. This location was once the home of Herb Baumeister and his young family during the early 1990s. By day, Herb was a successful businessman who operated a chain of thrift stores. By night, Herb would cruise the nightclubs of Indianapolis looking for his latest victims.

When word of human remains being found on Herb’s property got out; people started to also talk about the paranormal activity that was said to occur at Fox Hollow Farm. This activity is said to still occur regularly even today.

Kingston is a beautiful city in Ontario, Canada that is located on the north east end of Lake Ontario. This location has the name of the Limestone City, because of its countless heritage buildings that were constructed using local limestone. Kingston was the first capital of the United Province of Canada, and while it held this distinction for only a short time - it has remained a very important military installation. Today, it is the home of two major universities, three major hospitals, and is a well known tourist area.

There is a type of female killer that has become so infamous that they have their own nickname - the black widow. This name comes from the Black Widow spider that are found all over the world. They are considered to be the most venomous type of spiders found in the United States, so people are naturally not big fans of them even though people rarely die from their bites.

But it wasn’t due to their venom that these spiders are compared to deadly female killers. It is actually because of a a widely circulated myth that the females of the species eat their mates after sexual contact. While this actually does happen sometimes; this isn’t regular behaviour. This didn’t stop this falsehood persisting today, and now being attached to women who decide to murder their lovers.

These women are a lot more dangerous than their spider counterparts, and are known to act out their anger, sociopathic tendencies, or desire for financial gains by killing their husbands, boyfriends, or both. One of the most famous was a woman who immigrated to the United States in 1881. It is said she killed over forty people, but the murderess herself disappeared without a trace.

There are many types of of sweetener that a person can choose from. Some come in granular form like sugar, while others come in a syrup form like corn syrup. Another is molasses which is considered to be a liquid sugar that contains sucrose, and small amounts of fructose and glucose. It isn’t sweet like refined sugar, and is usually thicker and stickier than other liquid based sweeteners.

Molasses is the ingredient that makes brown sugar brown, and gives its flavour and moisture. It is also used to give moisture and consistency to many different bakery items like cookies, gingerbread, and pies. It gives thickness to baked beans, and sauces, and it is also used in distilling rum. It used to be the primary sweetener used until refined sugar pushed it towards the back of people’s cupboards. In the year 1919; molasses was everywhere.

But in Boston, Massachusetts in the United States; saying that molasses was everywhere is an understatement. It is because of molasses that twenty one individuals died, and an additional one hundred and fifty were injured in a disaster that is still spoken about today.

In 2009; a psychological horror film was released that changed this horror subgenera forever. The movie called “The Orphan” tells the tale of a couple who’s marriage became strained after the stillbirth of their third child. This loss was very hard on the family, and as a way to move forward the couple decided to adopt a nine year old Russian girl named Esther from a local orphanage. The couple’s oldest son Daniel resents the family’s new addition, while their five year old daughter Max embraces having a new sister.

This is where things start to get strange. Esther starts exhibiting hostile behaviour towards animals and school mates, and she seems to have knowledge of someone older than her. When Sister Abigail from the orphanage decides to come to the house to check in on Esther, this is when the couple finds out that tragic events and incidents always occur around her. One of these was the deaths of Esther’s previous adoptive parents.

After a whole lot of bad happens, the family learns that Esther is not a nine year old girl after all, but actually is a thirty three year old woman who suffers from proportional dwarfism. She had spent her life posing as a child, and she was actually a violent serial killer who has murdered at least seven people.

Now…I am not going to ruin the movie for those who did not see it, but this one is a definite must see. The plot was very different for its time, but what most people don’t know is that this terrifying tale is actually based on a true story.

The original movie “Scream” from the Scream horror movie series is considered to be a classic. It is a slasher film directed by Wes Craven that stars some big names like Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Drew Barrymore, Rose McGowan, and more. It is set in a small American town named Woodsboro, and the movie starts with our heroine, Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell. It is the anniversary of her mother’s murder, and it’s that day that Sidney and her friends become the targets of a masked serial killer known as Ghostface.

This movie is considered to be one of the best horror and slasher movies ever made, and it is credited for bringing back the horror genre when it started to decline in the 1990s. It made it acceptable for A list actors to take roles in horror films, which pushed these types of movies to the top of the box office today. But did you know that this movie was inspired by real life events?

Jean Laffite was a privateer and smuggler who is best known for taking a little break from pillaging, to fight for the United States in defence of New Orleans in the War of 1812. But Jean was a pirate at heart. Right after this he went back to his pirating ways, and he made quite a bit of money. Local lore tells that Jean did not put his treasure in a bank, or spend it all before he died. It is believed that Jean buried a large treasure trove somewhere in the Bayous of Louisiana, or along the United States Gulf Coast.

In the old section of Edinburgh, Scotland is a place now known as the Royal Mile. This is a succession of streets that form the main thoroughfare of the Old Town of the city. It runs between two important locations concerning the royal history of Scotland: Edinburgh Castle, and the Holyrood Palace. This used to be the original main street, and off this are small alleyways and courtyards to the north and south.

These alleyways are called a close, which is an old Scottish term for entry, court, or alleyway. A close is considered to be private property versus wind’s which are an open thoroughfare. Because of fear of English attacks from previous wars; the closes in Edinburgh had very dense housing. They are narrow with tall buildings on each side with the poorer living at the bottom, and the rich living up top.

Mary King Close is located underneath the Edinburgh City Chambers on the Royal Mile, and is currently is being used as a tourist attraction. This is due in part to its reputation for hauntings since at least the 17th century, and it is said to be quite the paranormal hot spot.

This system started in the United States, and is currently in multiple countries around the world. The goal of Amber Alerts are to quickly disseminate relevant information about a disappearance through a variety of sources including television, radio, and even personal cellphones to increase the chances of finding a missing child.

Studies show that in 76% of child abduction cases, the child is killed within three hours after their disappearance. This system is a way to have as many people aware of a situation as possible; in hopes that someone will see something to bring a missing child home safely. As of January 2, 2023; 1127 children were brought home through the United States Amber Alert system. But sadly; the little girl that this system was named after did not have this fate.

A few month’s ago my mom sent me an article over Facebook Messenger. It was from a group that I wasn’t part of, and because of that all I could see was the title of “Lizzie Halliday”. Winston Churchill was a man very well known in history. He was a British statesman, public speaker, and author who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, and from 1951 to 1955. He rallied his people during World War II, and helped lead his country to victory. But after he rose in political prominence before World War I; Winston gained the reputation of having erratic judgement at times. People started distancing themselves from him until his response to Adolf Hitler’s actions helped develop a coalition with the United States and Russia. But after that relationship broke down; Winston was the one who warned the western world of the expansionist threat of the Soviet Union. This changed the geopolitical landscape of the world forever.

Winston was considered to be an honourable, charming, but a stubborn man. He was known to be defiant, arrogant, and a bit conceded. He was never afraid to take a risk, but he also stood firm on his beliefs. That’s why many think that he became a supporter of a woman known as the last person in Britain convicted as a witch…Helen Duncan.

Telling ghost stories is a tradition during the month of October. Some do this by sitting in a circle on the floor with the lights off. Others venture to their local cemetery on a moonlit night. John Dee was a brilliant mathematician, astronomer, and alchemist who was an advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. He advocated for the creation of English colonies in the new world, which would help develop the British empire. He was considered to be a one man “think tank”, who was a visionary of the Elizabethan court.

But John was also heavily involved in astrology, magic, and the occult. He advised the queen based on this, and she believed that he was not just a trusted advisor - but also a powerful magician. Many people world wide believe in the existence of aliens. In recent polls; two thirds of both Americans and Canadians believe that there is intelligent life that exists on other planets. Scholars believe that public fascination with UFOs started in 1947 after a pilot flying in Washington state reported seeing disc-shaped objects in the sky with him. Both in the past and today; droughts cause massive problems. It can cause poor quality, or shortages of drinking water. It can impact air quality as dry conditions can result in dust in the air. It also can result in forest fires.

A lack of rain can also cause low crop yields, which impacts food prices and can create food shortages. It also can cause an increase of disease, such as the West Nile virus that is carried by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water. When there is a drought; many will go to extremes to try to find a way to make the rain fall. When California found itself in this situation 108 years ago; they were desperate, so they hired a rainmaker. The thing is that this may have worked! Was it one man’s gift, or an act of god?

The Battle of Gettysburg is one of the most famous battles of the American Civil War. It occurred from July 1 to July 3, 1863 in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and this battle had the largest number of casualties for this entire war.

This battle was the turning point of the Civil War after Union Major General George Meade’s soldiers defeated the Confederate army lead by General Robert E. Lee. This ended Lee’s attempt to invade the North, and afterwards he retreated with his army back to Virginia. But not everyone went home when this battle ended. It is estimated that between 46,000 and 51,000 soldiers from both sides had their lives end in this three day battle.

Soon after the battle ended; reports started to come in concerning paranormal activity throughout this area. From phantom cries of wounded soldiers to full body apparitions walking the battle grounds - Gettysburg is constantly reminded about their dark past.

Poorhouses, which were also known as almshouses or poor farms, were not a place that you wanted to end your days in. These places were tax supported residential institutions that took in those who could not support themselves. In these facilities; people were often given not enough food to eat, and what they were given were often unpalatable. They were forced into crowded and unsanitary conditions, where they had to do hard labour or domestic labour as a punishment created for those who suffered from poverty. The city of New Orleans in the US state of Louisiana is famous for being the birthplace of jazz music. When people think about witchcraft today; they think of the current Halloween stereotype of a witch…women in tall pointy hats with large noses stirring potions in a black cauldron while plotting their evil actions. But in the 17th century; witchcraft was a very real and serious crime for which a person could lose their life.

On April 10, 1912; the R.M.S Titanic left England on its very first journey. The number of military and civilian fatalities caused by World War II is estimated to be between 50 to 56 million people, with an additional 19 to 28 million deaths being caused by war related disease and famine. Out of all the areas that this war was fought, none were active as long as the area called the Pacific Theatre. The constant war in this area triggered a civil war and famine that is estimated to have killed more people that currently live in the countries of Canada and Australia combined.

There were countless atrocities that occurred during this time, and some of the worst were caused by the operations of Unit 731. This biological warfare unit dove to new depths in what was already a genocidal war. Before this Unit was ended in 1945, it committed some of the most atrocious human experiments in recorded history.

Slightly south west of Chicago sits a cemetery who’s first burial occurred around 1834. There is about eighty graves there and through the decades; the cemetery fell into disrepair due to the elements, poor upkeep, and vandalism. This helps create the creepy atmosphere of this cemetery, but it is completed by countless sightings of ghosts. In 1957, an alien named Commander Valiant Thor came to Earth demanding to speak with President Dwight D. Eisenhower. After meeting with the President, Vice President Richard Nixon, and the joint chiefs - he stayed on Earth for three years working with top scientists and government officials while living in the Pentagon.

If this sounds suspiciously like a plot of a TV show, you are correct. In American Horror Story Double Feature, Valiant Thor is an alien earthly representative, who is actual the mastermind behind an evil plot to replace the human race with alien/human hybrids. But the thing is my dear listeners, this is not just some sort of plot of a tv show. In fact, some believe that this really happened.

Serial killers are terrifying to most. This is because there are no blueprints for what makes a serial killer, nor is there a specific set of experiences that can occur to create one. This whole idea was summed up perfectly by serial killer Ted Bundy when he said…and I quote…”We serial killers are your sons. We are your husbands. We are everywhere. And there will be more of your children dead tomorrow.”

Christmas…the most festive time of the year. I have fond memories of decorating the tree, helping my mom with the lights or at least attempting to, hanging the stockings on the mantel, being with family, eating amazing food, and then on Christmas Day - seeing a bounty of presents under the tree with our home being filled with joy, love and laughter. Many people love playing video games. It is a way for people to escape from their regular lives, and allows a diversity of choice that the real world can’t provide. According to multiple studies, gaming can boost a persons mood, and help relieve stress. There is one place in northeastern Utah in the United States that is known world wide for its connection to the paranormal. This 512 acre or 207.2 hectare ranch that is said to be a hotspot for everything spooky like poltergeist phenomena, crop circles, UFO sightings, strange electromagnetic forces, floating fireballs, and cattle mutilations.

Beauty pageants have traditionally been contests that focus on ranking people by their physical attributes. In current times, pageants have evolved to include inner beauty, talent, and intelligence, but the reason that people enter these contests haven’t really changed. Some enter to build confidence, while some use it as a way to meet new people. More often, winning pageants gives the contestant opportunities in the worlds of modelling and entertainment. And then, there are all the cash prizes and possible scholarships that one can win…this makes entering pageants enticing to many.

Art is said to be subjective. It is based on the personal feelings and emotions that the artist felt at the time they created a work. It is a way for artists to express themselves through their work.

Not all artists become famous, while others enjoy great success throughout their lifetime. Others on the other hand never get to see their success, and this was the case when it came to Vincent Van Gogh. After his death, he became one of the most famous and influential artists in art history. But Vincent’s life was not a happy one. During his lifetime he was not commercially successful, and he struggled in poverty. This lead to depression, and mental health issues. Due to his struggles, Vincent died from suicide at the age of 37…or did he?

When people go to work, they expect to be safe. Sadly, that is not always the truth. Workplaces accidents happen, but sometimes employers ignore things that create risk. A great example of this was my uncle. He worked for a company driving and working with heavy equipment at a work site for many years. But what he didn’t know was that the buildings on his worksite were contaminated with exposed asbestos. He and many of his co-workers developed cancer, and passed away. His employer eventually recognized their fault, and settled with the victims families.

Now imagine for a moment that you were a female who worked in the early 20th century. Imagine your employer knew what they were doing all along when they decided to lie to you, and put you in a direct line towards death.

Through the years, the little tasks that we have to do evolves with time and technology. We don’t have to go to the grocery store any longer with grocery delivery or meal preparations services. We don’t have to vacuum our floors, since we can now get a robot vacuum that can do it. But the one thing I don’t miss is going to the bank.

For me, going to the bank is the worst. Standing in line for what seems to be hours versus using an app? In my mind there is no contest. Think of all the time we save by using banking apps. But as you know; sometimes you still have to go to the bank, and for a pizza delivery man from the United States - going to the PNC Bank resulted in his death.

In 1993, a movie staring Bill Murray was released called Groundhog Day. In this film, a bitter and cynical TV weatherman played by Murray goes to a small town to film a report about their annual Groundhog Day celebrations. Soon after arriving, he finds himself living the same day over and over again. Originally this situation makes him frustrated and angry, but soon he starts seeing how reliving events could be to his advantage.

Now this is just a Hollywood tale, but if you ask anyone if they had deja vu - they would likely say they have. But imagine for a minute if a feeling of deja vu went longer than just a moment. Imagine if it just kept going on and on.

One hundred and ten years ago, someone carrying an axe entered a home through an unlocked door late one night. They walked past one room which inside lay two sleeping young girls, and then snuck upstairs where they slipped past another room where four more young children were also asleep. To all of the parents out there - I salute you. Raising a child is extremely challenging, even in the best of times. Emotions and behaviours rapidly change as children grow, and learn about the world around them.

Children just like adults feel sad, anxious, upset, or even aggressive at times. But in most cases, this is typical in a child’s development. Sometimes though, it is not. Many mental disorders start in childhood. From anxiety disorders, ADHD, to depression and PTSD - many adults who reach out for mental health treatment realize that their issues started in childhood, and wish they had help sooner.

But there are times that a child develops issues, and they are not properly dealt with. There are also times that people do not see the signs early enough, and it results in disaster.

When I originally thought of telling you all about the real stories behind the Disney-fied versions of fairytales, I had no idea what you all would think. I am happy to say that you loved hearing the original versions, as much as I loved telling them to you.

The tales behind the Disney versions are full of darkness and death. They give us a view of the ideologies and biases of the times that they were written, but sometimes the bias is actually on Disney’s part.

Even though Disney wants us to think that all women are delicate, but strong princesses - that is not the truth. They want us to think that all men are valiant, but they are not. Good and evil are not as black and white as Disney makes things out to be. Not everyone lives happily ever after in a castle with their true loves.

I am quite often asked what I think the most haunted place is. Many guess it is a cemetery, but that’s not what I think. Ghosts are said to appear in a location due to emotion…they were happy there or perhaps they died there. The thing is that both of these do not always apply to a cemetery, but they do apply to hospitals.

In today’s news it seems that every day there is a new story about climate change. Global warming has been scientifically proven to be altering our planets weather patterns, which results in some terrifying weather events.

A great example of this happened in British Columbia in Canada in late 2021. They received a month’s worth of rain over two days leaving the area flooded. Thousands of people were stranded, and infrastructure was damaged. Entire communities were evacuated, and roads were washed out. The food supply chain was disrupted which affected several provinces. But just like others who have suffered from severe weather events, people always somehow find a way to continue on. But there are some weather events that can’t be explained by global warming. In fact, there are some that are thought to be more supernatural than environmental.

In a Monty Python skit, they mocked the idea of Trial by Ordeal. In this skit, a mob of medieval peasants bring an irritated looking woman who was wearing a false nose to a leader of a town. The townspeople ask the leader if they can burn her as a witch. The leader asks how do they know the woman is a witch, and the townsfolk look confused. They start offering reasons like she looks like she is a witch, and that she turned one of them (who looks like a person by the way) into a newt. After talking for a few minutes, they decide the best way to test if she is a witch is see if she weighs the same as a duck. If she does she is clearly a witch.

This type of bizarre reasoning is actually what the ideology of Trial by Ordeal is about. People had to go through some sort of ordeal to prove they were not what they were accused of being or doing. Most often, the test that the individual had to go through were arbitrary and torturous.

People love to gossip, but gossip differs from normal human tendency to talk about each other. Gossip tends to focus on negative information, and often is used to demean their subject. It typically centres on the negative aspects of a person, and often is used for revenge. People often like to gossip since they feel it gives them a sense of power, and they share gossip as a way to display their power.

With the invention of the internet; gossip now has a platform where it can cause even more harm than in the past, since it can reach millions in minutes. But some gossip historically went beyond hurtful behaviour, and it actually altered history.

For nearly 40 years, people would see a billboard on Route 16 near Fayetteville, West Virginia with grainy pictures of five children. Their eyes looked off this billboard, and into a person’s soul. Their story started on Christmas in 1945 when the family went to bed, and woke up in fiery blaze. The official story is that these children died in the blaze that day…but did they?

When I was 16 I met one of my sister’s male friends. We got along great, and I really looked forward to seeing him again. But when I did - his reaction was not what I expected. He was angry at me. He said that he saw me the week previous while I was working at a local coffee shop, but when he said hello I looked at him like he had three heads. He started to talk to me, but I ignored him completely. I was extremely rude…but the thing was…I wasn’t. I didn’t work at a coffee shop, and I didn’t even go to that area since the last time we met. I never ran into him at all. He didn’t believe me until my sister confirmed what I said. He was shocked. He apologized, and said the only explanation was that I had a doppelgänger. I laughed it off, but during the next few months more and more people approached me upset that I would not talk to them when they approached me. Each time they told me the situation, I had an alibi for the day that they supposedly ran into me. Then just as quickly as this started - it stopped. No more weird confrontations…my doppelgänger disappeared. You may think that this is unusual, but it actually is a lot more common that you think.

Identical twins share a bond like no other. They are the result of one fertilized egg that split in two which results in them having identical DNA. They have the same physical features, and often live through the same childhood experiences. But this doesn’t mean they are the same person.

Many twins grow to have different likes and dislikes, and live completely different lives than their sibling. But in the case of June and Jennifer Gibbons, they were not like other twins. In fact, it wasn’t until one twin met her untimely death that the other started to reclaim a sense of normalcy in her life.

Lighthouses carry a special place in history, and they still are very important today. These were manned by lighthouse keepers who’s main duty was to watch the light, which historically was a lantern that they had to make sure it burned bright and clean. They also had to ensure that the lights mechanisms stayed operational so it would flash in its own unique distance pattern. During foggy patches and stormy weather, multiple lighthouse keepers would work. One would operate the signals, while the other would operate the light.

Lighthouse keepers would work very long days and nights, because if they didn’t disaster could strike. It was because of these people that ships would be able to safely go in and out of harbours. These people were the ones who warned ships crew that there were rocky coasts or dangerous shallow waters. They were invaluable, but what if the job was even more dangerous than anyone could have known?

I was really excited to hear that ten years after the tv show Dexter ended, that producers decided to bring it back. In case you haven’t heard of it or watched it, the TV show Dexter is about a man who is an adorable but awkward blood splatter analyst for the Miami Police Department by day - and a serial killer at night. His adoptive father detected his son’s murderous ways very early, and using his skills from his job as a Miami Police Officer - he taught Dexter his “code”. So what was this code? Dexter could only target evil people, and specifically serial killers like himself.

As the series progresses, Dexter tries to hide his dark side while he struggles with the morality of his duel nature. As much as this show is great entertainment, for some it was an inspiration. And one of those people who was inspired - just happened to live in my very own neighbourhood.

When I was a young girl, I read all of the Laura Ingalls Wilder “Little House” books. I was enchanted by the tales of young Laura who’s family had great adventures, while protecting and supporting each other. I felt a kinship with this girl, since I grew up on a farm in the Canadian prairies. I knew from personal experience how physically hard farming could be, and I could only imagine how difficult it would be to grow up during those times.

I also saw my own father in the character of Charles Ingalls. He was a strong man, who loved his family. He would do anything to help protect those he loved. So imagine my surprise when I recently discovered that Pa Ingalls may have killed some people.

Whenever a bad storm is on its way, I feel it. It has always been that way…I start getting pain behind my eyes, and if I don’t take medication I end up with a bad migraine. My doctor told me that there are many people who are just like me, and we are considered to be human barometers. Many times all I need to do is take a single Tylenol or Advil, and the problem is solved.

But what if I took that pill, and it was tampered with. This is what happened in 1982 when several people took Tylenol without knowing that someone tampered with them. They were laced with potassium cyanide.

The word poltergeist is a German word that stands for noisy ghost or spirit. It is said to be responsible for physical disturbances and turmoil. Many claim that poltergeists are capable of physical abuse like hitting, pinching, or tripping people as well as moving objects, and making noises like knocking on doors. They traditionally are described as troublesome, and they haunt a person versus a location.

Even though the name of these entities have been tagged to Germany lore, some variations of poltergeist activities are found in many different cultures. Early claims of spirits attacking and harassing their victims date back to the 1st century, but the name of poltergeists only started to become more common in the early 17th century. Some believe that tales of poltergeists are only hoaxes, and some others think that it is just illusion, memory lapses, or wishful thinking. But for some, this is a very real and terrifying reality.

Humanity has always been fascinated with the ocean, and even today - we are not entirely positive what lives in the waters that cover more than 70% of the earth’s surface. So it should be no surprise that storytellers throughout history have populated these waters with all sort of monsters that are ready to wreck havoc on sailors at any time.

In the late 1880’s; London’s East End was the scene of a series of brutal murders, which remains unsolved to this day. The victims were women, and their deaths all took place relatively close to each other. All of these killings are believed to be committed by one man. Although his identity has baffled experts for over a century; today this man is known as one of the world’s most infamous serial killers - Jack the Ripper.

Most people today say they don’t believe in curses. But if you consider the prevalence of curses in today’s media; it suggests that this concept still has a hold on many peoples psyches, and that many still believe that this could happen to them.

From a scientific perspective, there is a rational explanation behind why people could believe they are cursed. For example, studies show that people who believe they are cursed come up with this idea due to their own thinking patterns, or from the desire to make sense of the world around them. Science also tells us that if a person does believe in curses that this belief is often reinforced by other psychological tendencies. There is no scientific evidence to support a supernatural base for curses, but the belief of a curse has powerful impact of people. And despite evidence to the contrary, many stories of curses are very compelling.

Today we are going to here some of these stories, and after hearing them you can decide…are curses actually real?

The power of play is very important in helping a child thrive. For one small town in Ohio, they learned this lesson the hard way when an unknown individual began mailing threatening and sexually explicit letters to residents. In 1893, a man named H.H. Holmes was the master of his domain. He lured victims to his macabre hotel that he outfitted with trap doors, gas chambers, and a basement crematorium. According to some claims, he killed up to 200 people inside his Murder Castle, and is considered to be one of America’s first serial killers.

What are the ingredients for the perfect modern day urban myth? Well…it needs to be something that a quick Google search will not give away its true origin. It also needs to be something that lingers and re-manifests...something that jostles memories of the first time it supposedly creeps out of the darkness, and makes itself known.

Today, the tale you will hear has these elements, and has been one of the most talked about of all modern based myths. The Mothman is a creature that was first documented in the late 1960s, and since then has been spotted countless times in the United States. Some claim it comes before cataclysmic events, and others claim it is connected to UFOs and the Men in Black. But others believe it is a hoax, or maybe a product of mass hysteria. Whatever the Mothman is, it continues to appear in both real life and pop culture, and is now deeply embedded into modern American folklore.

A little while ago, we did a show about fairytales, and how Disney has a talent of retelling these ancient tales that were passed from generation to generation. They take these stories and Disney-fy them for kids. These stories were not made for kids though...they were dark, full of deception and death.

These stories are often more complex than folk lore, and have a lesson for us to learn. Disney makes all the women and their true loves heroes. The women are delicate but strong, and the men are valiant and brave. They somehow make it through insurmountable odds to save the world against evil. They defeat the bad guys, take their thrones, and live happily ever after in castles with their woodland friends. The lessons that the Disney versions tell us are still there, but some have changed from the original version.

So gather around friends...its time for another story.

Haiti is located on the island of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean Sea. It is east of Cuba and Jamaica, and south of the Bahamas, and it has a very interesting history. It was originally inhabited by an indigenous population that migrated from South America before the first Europeans arrived on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus. The island was claimed by Spain, who ceded to France in 1687.

During the French Revolution of 1789 to 1799, slaves and free people of colour launched the Haitian Revolution which changed the countries trajectory forever. After years of conflict, France was defeated and Haiti declared their sovereignty on January 1, 1804 becoming the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean. It was the second republic in the Americas, was the first country to abolish slavery, and the only state in history established by a successful slave revolt.

With all this dramatic history it would make for many dark and haunting tales.

I remember one day my mom brought up that she was thinking of donating her body to science when she dies. She said to me that she wasn’t going to use it anyway, so why not? Why not help someone? I told her that I would support whatever she chooses, and ultimately she told me that she decided to be an organ donor and not donate her whole body to science.

People who decide to donate their organs to others are heroes. People who decide to donate their bodies to science are helping people learn and help with studies that save lives. But sometimes when people decide to do this selfless act, it doesn’t work out like they planned.

Today, I am presenting an episode that I wanted to put out to all of you since the very beginning of this podcast. The thing is…I avoided it until now. The reason is that the subject matter is a sensitive one, and close to my heart. I honestly started to try to develop this episode multiple times over the past year, and walked away since it affected me so deeply. But I feel that it is vitally important to speak out about our subject matter today…child abuse.

Child abuse is physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and/or neglect. It can include both physical and mental injuries that last a lifetime. It involves an abuse of power and a breach of trust, and even one event no matter how small can destroy lives. But the stories that you are going to hear today are not small. They are in fact some of the worst case scenarios, and I feel that it is important that they are remembered. It is important that these children are remembered.

Today we will be talking about abuse so severe that it resulted in what is called a feral child. A feral child is a human child who has lived isolated away from other human contact from a very young age. They have little to no experience with human care, behaviours, or even language. These children at times were victims of severe abuse, or trauma before running away or being abandoned. They are sometimes are the subjects of folklore or legend, and are often portrayed as having been raised by animals.

So if you haven’t guessed it by now…we are going to be talking about some dark stuff today…listener discretion is advised.

About 61 years ago, something happened in the Ural Mountains that has resulted in a conspiracy theory that just wont go away. A band of skiers trekked through this mountains stashing food, and extra skis in a valley to pick up on their way back from their trip. Later that same night, these nine experienced skiers and hikers burst out of their tents half dressed fleeing into the night and into a blizzard.

They were later found dead - some with their bones broken, and one was even missing her tongue. For decades, few people beyond the victims family and friends were even aware that this happened. It was only after a retired official’s account of what he saw came out to the public in 1990 that the world’s curiosity was peaked.

A lonely hearts killer, which is otherwise known as a want-ad killer, is someone who finds their victims historically through classified or personal ads, or match making organizations. With the evolution of the internet, this has evolved to include dating apps, and looking for love chat rooms.

The motivation of these type of killers vary with some planning to rob their victims, or some wanting to satisfy a pathological impulsive. But some on the other hand, are serial killers who use this method to target their victims.

In Episode 10, we discuss famous hauntings in two plantations. Lore developed around these plantations for several reasons. One of these was to help bring in tourists, but the other was that historically lore that surrounds plantations is many times altered to emphasize the horrors of slavery.

In the story you will hear today, these don’t apply. The case you will hear actually happened the way it is presented.
