Interpreter's Workshop with Tim Curry

This unique (sometimes funny, sometimes serious) podcast focuses on supporting signed language interpreters in the European countries by creating a place with advice, tips, ideas, feelings and people to come together. Interpreter's Workshop with Tim Curry deals with the fact that many countries do not have education for sign language interpreters. Here we talk to sign language interpreters, teachers, and researchers, to look at the real issues and share ideas for improvement from many countries. Signed language interpreters usually work alone or in small teams. This can create a feeling of uncertainty about our work, our skills and our roles. Here is the place to connect and find certainty. IW 86: InterpreTips: Are We Boxed In?

"Boxing Day" is over. Time to step out and look around!

We are a practice profession. We are supposed to be developing our skills, knowledge, and overall work habits continually. However, we sometimes create our own personal and professional barriers to our own growth.

In this InterpreTips, I discuss how we build our own walls, boxing in our thoughts, our perspectives, our talents, our decisions, and our interpretations. Let's think through this to achieve more for ourselves, our profession, and the communities we serve as sign language interpreters.

Enjoy!

IW 85: InterpreTips: Who, Whom, Whatchamacallit?

What's his face! uh... Who you gonna call?!

The InterpreTips today are all about name signs. What are they? How are they used? What do we do with them in our interpretation?

Name signs can be one of those hard concepts to interpret in a nice way. We'll discuss the awkwardness of it and figure out ways to improve.

Oddly enough this is one of the many elements of interpreting that Marty Taylor discusses in her "Blue books", Interpreting Skills: ASL to English.

"Young Whipper-snappers! Get off my lawn!"

Yes, each generation complains about the younger generations in some way. However, our guest, Dr Marty Taylor points out how we as sign language interpreters have adapted to the changes over the generations in our field.

In this episode, Marty shares her thoughts on how to create an interpreter training program today, how language deprivation experienced by the deaf community affects our work, how interpreting decades ago was vastly different than today, and much more.

Your Voice is Too Loud! You should let others speak.

In this part 3 of my series with Robyn K Dean, we look at how to improve our professional development on our own. That means, reflect on our practice, speak out about what we do and analyze it. But why is that so hard to do when we have so many workshops?

Robyn breaks it down for us. We discuss some interesting ideas of the dynamics involved with the workshop mentality that many sign language interpreters have.

Wait, it's about you, not me! I get it.

In this episode, Dr Dean shares how Demand Control Schema applied to the signed language interpreting profession ...got out of control quickly. Yet, over time, it has coalesced into a textbook and a filter with which to look at the dynamics of our work.

This has lead her to the new focus of looking at signed language interpreting as a Practice Profession, which she touches on in this episode and the upcoming ones. Stay tuned!

The Best DEMANDING Job Ever! Yes, with CONTROLS!
(See what I did there?)

Dr Robyn K Dean opens the curtain for us to see how her journey in our signed language interpreting profession had familiar steps of development that we all have. She went from frustration, almost boredom to looking deep into what we do, which lead to the study and research that we know today, Demand Control Schema as a part of our professional practice.

When the Inner Voice becomes the Outer Voice

After last week, we've learned from our inner-humorous voice that we must take charge of some parts of the online platform in order to do our job well.

I share my online interpreting experience and solutions to the common obstacles we face when facilitating communication for our clients. I look at preparation, pre-assignment communication with the organizers, practical ways to use the technology, and how to avoid the problems that the technology still has.

Are interpreters vegetarians?!

Perhaps, that's not the meaning of "Meat nor Fish", but in today's episode Marco Nardi helps us see his perspective as an expat interpreter living in-between the worlds of Italy, UK, hearing and Deaf.

He gives advice to the beginning interpreter to prevent burnout and one good tip for interpreters who also use English as a non-native speaker.

Let's put our feet firmly... in-between these worlds in this episode.

IW 59: Interview Marco Nardi Part 3: Interpreting Takes 25 Years to Prepare

"What do you trade to be the Jack of All Trades?"

Marco and I touch on various related topics. How do you fit into this discussion?

  • Why do some experienced interpreters become complacent?
  • Should interpreters be general practitioners or specialists in different domains of interpreting?
  • How do we change interpreting training to match these goals?
  • Should we change on-going education/training?

Listen carefully, there just might be a quiz! ;)

How much baggage am I allowed?! How much can I handle?

He also encourages us to rethink how we train interpreters. Is the "assault-training" method working?

Today I share four concepts that I remind myself of when situations get a bit complicated. It also helps me to remember these four perspectives when I become "used to", complacent, or big-headed about my work. When I think it's easy or it's no big deal. I must remember these four topics.

I continue the conversation with Dr Jonathan Downie from Scotland as he gives us more thoughts about the field of spoken and signed language interpreting.

We laugh... at our own jokes.
We try to be profound when our words won't come out.
We give our opinions of what interpreters should think about.
We even look at possible interpreting trends for the future.

IW 33: Interview Dr J Downie Part 1: Accent on Interpreting

My guest Dr Jonathan Downie from Scotland tells his journey in the profession of interpreting. He is an author and podcast host.

Being a researcher and a practicing interpreter gives him a unique perspective on our work.

Spoken language interpreting vs Signed language interpreting

Interpreting is interpreting. We use different modes of language, but essentially the process is the same.

What are the differences? Similarities? Today Jonathan begins the discussion on these topics and more giving us all more to think about.

InterpreTips: Advice from my experience, research I've read, workshops I've attended.

This InterpreTip deals with that panic attack when our mouths and our brains disconnect. We are trying to interpret into the spoken language, but something happened and we forgot something or we created a sentence that has no ending.

How do we fix this? How do we prevent this?

Find out my answers in this episode.

IW 29: Interview Brett Best Part 2: We Have the Power

Power, seen and unseen, we must use it wisely.

Today, Brett speaks to the fact that much of what we do as interpreters transfers to all situations, even to different countries. Our interpreting process takes into account cultures, norms and of course language use. This applies even across borders.
We also learn of horizontal violence, online and verbal attacks within our profession. Her research can help us start improving our communication with colleagues to enrich each other rather than to tear us down.

Next week we conclude the interview with Brett Best with a look into her life in the UK and more.

Keep on interpreting.

IW 28: Interview Brett Best Part 1: US vs UK WorldChat

English is English, right? Which English?

Since language and culture are so intertwined, English can bring different meanings from different countries.

I speak with interpreter Brett Best who moved from the US to the UK. Her experiences give us insight into our profession by comparing the two journeys she took to be a working interpreter in each of these English-speaking countries.

In the next episodes she will give us an in-depth look at these journeys and the situation as it is now. As the chat continues, we'll get a peek at her research and how we can benefit in the field.

IW 27: InterpreTips: Attention-terpreter. Spotlight Please!

"Mr. DeMille! I'm ready for my closeup!"

Attention seeker, attention getter, are we? Do we seek attention?

In this episode I discuss the finer points of why some interpreters say yes to doing interviews for TV or radio to talk about the Deaf community. Why do some feel it is OK to speak for others? When is it acceptable to answer questions about the clients we serve? Who decides?

So, pay attention to the attention seekers. Listen... closely.

IW 26: InterpComedy: Making Waves
  • Who am I?
  • Who do you think you are?
  • Who indeed.

Clients call us by many different names and say illogical statements and questions. Why do people still misunderstand our profession? I'm sure it has to do with awareness and amount of experience they have using an interpreter. However, I'll let the researchers found that answer.
Today, let's just have some fun with the "name-calling" and laugh at ourselves while chatting about the odd sayings of "those non-interpreters" out there in the wilderness.

Drama! Drama! Drama! Be calm and interpret.

We are a young profession...still. Society knows about us, but individuals tend to misunderstand what we do and who we are. This societal perspective can make us become defensive. We have a list of reasons, arguments and explanations ready to counter any barriers that we encounter in our work.

This attitude can affect our ethical, moral, and practical decisions. In this episode, I detail this look at how we can make our decisions and create less stress for us and for the clients.

IW 11: Interview Sharon N-Solow Part 4: For Lou and VL

Part 4, the last in our interview series with Sharon Neumann Solow, an American pioneer interpreter from the U.S.A. Sharon is a teacher, consultant, researcher, actor and genuine gift to all.

This episode touches the heart a bit deeper and a sensitive court case topic is mentioned. Be warned that tears may drop. Also, Virginia Hughes passed away only a few days after this entire interview was made.

Sharon leaves us with coping strategies she uses to stay healthy, mentally and physically when tasked with difficult interpreting situations. Her final thoughts are to pass to us the words of wisdom and observations of the early mentors in her life.

So, the final words in this interview are:

  • healthy coping strategies,
  • legacy advice and comfort,
  • and more.

Have a great rest of the summer! See you next week!!

IW 07: InterpreTips: I am He as You are He...Actor or Interpreter?

Acting is not everyone's cup of tea. I would say interpreters must at least sip a little from that cup or lose some of our fluency in interpreting.

Bruce and Siegrid gave me some thoughts about how to put into words my view of interpreting. Using some acting skills helps us create a better interpretation and allows us to be a part of the context in a more comfortable way.

IW 04: InterpreTips: Decisions - What we take is equal to what we make.

I made a decision to discuss decisions.

This is a short episode for those of you who like quick thoughts on one subject. The one continuous discussion in the sign language profession is focused on how we make decisions, practical, professional, ethical and moral.

  • Why do we always have questions about our decisions?
  • What makes it so hard for us to accept our decisions?
  • Why do we doubt ourselves so much??

This is a wonderful discussion in the second half of my interview with Scottish, CODA interpreter, Bruce Cameron. He explains more about the system of training for sign language interpreters in Scotland and we dig deeper into his approaches to decision-making, team interpreting and more. His perspective of interpreting comes from growing up in the natural language and cultural environment of Deaf parents.

IW 02: Interview Bruce Cameron Part 1: CODA, DJ, Bull, Interpreter

When did you decide to be an interpreter? How did you become an interpreter? Listen to one interpreter's path to the profession and how his life journey influences his work. His experiences can be lessons for us all.

In this episode of the Interpreter's Workshop, we visit with a BSL/English interpreter from Scotland. Bruce Cameron is a CODA who became an interpreter later in life through a unique government funded program. We hear about his life as a child of Deaf parents, his work from a DJ to interpreter, and such details as how he is paid for interpreting.

In Part 2, we go deeper into his approach to interpreting decisions and the system of the profession in the UK.

IW 01: Mom, REALLY, it's OK.

Why do we take ourselves so seriously? Chill. Stay cool. Be calm and interpret.

In this episode of the Interpreter's Workshop, I tell two stories from the beginning of my two careers. I relate them to interpreting, the profession and selfcare.

Story 1: Ego...much?
Story 2: Don't look at me...it was him!

Also, thoughts on the phrase that interpreters use often, "I'm just the interpreter."

Enjoy. Please let me know what you want to talk about and more at interpretersworkshop.com.
