Hello everyone,
Here's my arrangement of the legendary anime song - "A Cruel Angel's Thesis" from Neon Genesis Evangelion!
This time I tried to take a more creative route and wrote a piano arrangement that is different to the original song's structure. I also borrowed a lot of ideas from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerti Nos. 2 and 3. In the end, the arrangement is more expressive and personal.
Anyway, hope you enjoyed my cover of this legendary song :)
0:00 - Introduction - heavy and chordal
0:16 - Cadenza - it borrows from Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (PC2). It starts with the thunderous arpeggiated piano accompaniment of the first movement, but ends instead with the cadenza entry from the third movement.
0:27 - Verse A - at 49s I used an excerpt from the coda of the first movement of PC2.
1:04 - Pre-chorus A
1:19 - Chorus A
1:41 - Modulating bridge - borrows from the scherzando subject from PC3, third movement
2:02 - Interlude A - Tamashii no Refrain. Part of it borrows from the call-and-response played by the woodwinds and the piano of PC3, first movement. It ends with a modulation back to E♭ major using the chord progression from the start of PC2, third movement.
2:36 - Interlude B - the choral bridge from the original song
2:54 - Interlude C - borrows directly from the piano accompaniment from PC2, second movement. It releases all the tension and reinforces E♭ major as the home key.
3:17 - Verse B - repeat of Verse A but should be played softer
3:47 - Pre-chorus B - instead of ending in C minor, it instead takes a further step up to D minor.
4:04 - Chorus B - now in D minor
4:27 - Reprise
