According to information obtained by USA TODAY, Steve Harwell, a former lead vocalist for the rock band Smash Mouth, is currently receiving hospice care.

The longtime manager of Harwell and the band, Robert Hayes, revealed on Sunday to USA TODAY that the singer, who is 56 years old, is "resting at home" and "being cared for by his fiancée and hospice care." Hayes made the announcement. In addition, the representative mentions that the family has requested "privacy during this difficult time."

According to TMZ, which was the first media outlet to break the news, Harwell had "reached the final stage of liver failure" as a result of his lifetime of alcohol consumption. This caused his liver to stop functioning properly.

After a disastrous performance at a beer and wine festival in October 2021, Harwell made the decision to leave the band and officially announced his departure from it. A video showed Harwell slurring his speech, shouting at the audience, and making a motion that resembled a Nazi salute was captured while he was performing with the band at The Big Sip in New York City. This video has now gone viral. After the performance, his representatives at the time issued a statement in a press release claiming that the video had "been taken out of context" in order to mislead the artist. The representatives for Harwell then disclosed in a statement that was given to USA TODAY that the frontman had been struggling with health concerns for the previous eight years as a direct result of his diagnosis with cardiomyopathy. Harwell experienced "serious medical setbacks" as a result of his heart illness. These setbacks included heart failure and acute Wernicke encephalopathy. The latter condition impacted both his memory and his ability to communicate verbally. During his performance in 2021, Harwell allegedly "suffered from numerous symptoms" brought on by his medical condition, as stated by his representative. "I've tried so hard to power through my physical and mental health issues and to play in front of you one last time, but I just wasn't able to," Harwell stated in the news release. "I'm sorry that I let you down."

"Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of being a rock star, performing in front of sold-out arenas, and I have been so fortunate to live out that dream," Harwell stated. "To my bandmates, it's been an honor performing with you all these years, and I can't think of anyone else I would have rather gone on this wild journey with. I appreciate everything you've done for me." I am looking forward to being able to identify myself as one of the band's newest followers and I cannot wait to find out what other achievements Smash Mouth has in store for us."The band Smash Mouth made their debut on a big label in the late 1990s with the publication of the single "Fush Yu Mang," which went on to become their most successful single to date, selling two million copies. The subsequent album, titled "Astro Lounge," was responsible for the Billboard Hot 100 hit "All Star." Additionally, the band was involved in the creation of the soundtrack for the 2001 animated picture "Shrek."
