盤福路，本是廣州西北面城牆。 1918年，市府拆牆基而建成。 據說，當時，拆城牆修建馬路至現在的人民北路段，政府資金不足。 美籍華僑伍籍磐夫人江福貞，資助興建東面一段路，路名就取夫妻二人各一字，為該路段命名為盤福路。
亦有一說法，是取名自清朝初的小巷「盤福里」。 禪宗六祖惠能，曾在廣州弘法，並種了菩提樹、起了戒壇。 從此，這一帶被視為佛門福地，此處的「盤福里」因此得名。 開馬路時，因該馬路位於盤福里的北側，故名「盤福北路」。 至1950年代初期，去掉「北」字，成盤福路。
中華人民共和國成立前，盤福路附近，曾經是「棺材一條街」。 當時這裡算是廣州的近郊。 當時的「方便醫院」（現廣州市第一人民醫院）、部隊醫院，和「月光公司」（廣州市最早的殯儀館），都在此。 因此，長生店及相關祭祀用品店非常興旺。 然而，此景況在今日已找不到一絲痕跡。

Panfu Road was originally the northwest city wall of Guangzhou. In 1918, the city government demolished the wall foundation and built it. It is said that at that time, the government did not have enough funds to demolish the city wall and build the road to the current Renmin North Road section. Panfu, an American overseas Chinese, and his wife, Jiang Fuzhen, funded the construction of a section of road on the east side. The road was named after the husband and wife, and the section was named Panfu Road.
There is also a saying that it was named after the alley "Panfuli" in the early Qing Dynasty. Huineng, the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, once preached Buddhism in Guangzhou, planted a bodhi tree and built a precept altar. From then on, this area was regarded as a blessed place for Buddhism, hence the name "Panfuli" here. When the road was opened, it was named "Panfu North Road" because it was located on the north side of Panfuli. By the early 1950s, the word "North" was removed and Panfu Road was formed.
Before the founding of the People's Republic of China, the area near Panfu Road used to be "Coffin Street". At that time, this was considered a suburb of Guangzhou. At that time, the "Convenient Hospital" (now the First People's Hospital of Guangzhou), the military hospital, and the "Moonlight Company" (the earliest funeral parlor in Guangzhou) were all located here. Therefore, longevity shops and related sacrificial supplies shops are very prosperous. However, there is no trace of this situation today.
