In this episode of the Music at a Rational Volume Podcast, Nate and Kyle (mostly Kyle) take you on a brief reminiscence into the life and career of one Neill Kirby McMillan Jr. (August 2, 1957 – February 7, 2024), who was professionally known as Mojo Nixon. Perhaps best described as the "dirty" Weird Al, Nixon's work was sarcastic and cutting but also witty and clever, all while never being shy to take on topics and people most people wouldn't touch. Full of cuss words, sexual innuendo, adult themes, and plenty of other not safe for work content, Nixon's work will stand out for years to come. So be warned all ye that enter the playlist, it's pretty offensive in there. You can't say we didn't tell you.

In this episode of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle disagree about one of the most recognizable, well regarded, and simultaneously controversial albums of the 80s, Paul Simon's Graceland. In the latest installment of the As Good As They Say? series, your humble hosts talk about this iconic album from 1986 which is most known for the radio hit "You Can Call Me Al" and its accompanying music video featuring Chevy Chase (who was at the height of his popularity at the time). Graceland has won Grammys and is heralded by all the usual music industry tastemakers, but also has a sizable list of detractors so listen in to see which side Nate and Kyle land on.

In this last episode of series 3 of Music at a Rational Volume, Nate and Kyle offer a response to the mildly successful Songs About a Girl playlist episode, Songs About Dudes. They talk about creating the list and in the same vein, the hosts discuss the differences between the two. Such as, why there are 80,000 million times more songs about girls than their male counterparts, and how come James by The Bangles wasn't a hit. It should have been huge. I know it, you know it, and those jerks at the label back in the day sure as hell knew it and they screwed that poor band out of further money and succes.... sorry... In this episode Nate and Kyle discuss our favorite late 80s early 90s much-maligned music genre mockingly called "Hair Metal." The hosts walk through the common misconceptions and try and tear down some of the more egregious arguments some use to take shots at what, in our opinion, was an era of talented musicians, making great rock and roll music. The main take-away is that big hair, tight pants, and lots of makeup isn't a genre, and we would fight you on it, but we need to find our eye liner.

In this episode Nate and Kyle once again visit, figuratively of course, one of the United States and try to figure out what, if any, good music comes from that state. This Week that state is Tennessee... I hear you saying, "That's a softball, surely there isn't an easier state what with Memphis and Nashville within the borders..." and I can hear myself saying right back at you, "it definitely wasn't that easy, and don't call me Shirley." There is some great music from this state and a lot of it isn't Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus, so listen as the hosts take you on a journey of musical discovery as they discover the lesser knowns, all of what's hiding under the popular and recognizable exports from the great state of Tennessee.

In this episode Nate and Kyle discuss the songs that aren't really Christmas songs, that is to say songs about or dealing with the actual holiday. Christmas songs are awesome, but there aren't that many good, traditional, and repeatable songs. So once you've heard Silent Night, Rudolph, and whatever combo of the other 15 standards, you're gonna start looking to fill out your playlist a bit. The problem is that most artists don't write original holiday songs, so we're left with the ones that seem "close enough" and the playlist for this episode is full of these.

The songs on this playlist are great in their own right, but all share some level of ick as well. So listen in as Nate and Kyle discuss why they chose the songs they did and just how creeped out you should be about some of the lyrics in popular music... looking at you Blondie, one way or another... hello HR? In this episode Nate and Kyle discuss a fast-paced, straight ahead, and in your face rock 'n' roll record from The Donnas called Spend The Night. More than just a girl version of The Ramones, The Donnas were known for their driving, almost punk-like, sound and this record exemplifies their brilliant musicianship, no-nonsense vocals and lyrics, and well crafted 3 minutes or less tunes. The hosts, unlike most weeks, pretty much stick to the record this week and shine a light on a band that should continue to be heard and celebrated.

In this episode Nate and Kyle discuss the greatness that is the debut album from The Outfield. The hosts discuss why it was so great, the success of "Your Love", the limitations to the success of other tracks, and also the reasons that it isn't listed among other "great" albums from their era in spite of its quality.
“You don’t have to analyze my lyrics to understand them. You enjoy these songs or you don’t. You can put these songs on while you’re driving. They make you feel good. What more can you ask?” -- John Spinks
