A little history leading up to CPI February 2023:

The CPI is a measure of the average change in prices over time in a market basket of consumer goods and services. It is calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) of the United States government and is widely used as an indicator of inflation. The CPI March 2023 contains updated weights that possibly affected the past 5 years of inflation values.

From 1947 to present, the values of the CPI have increased steadily, reflecting the overall increase in prices over time. However, there have been periods of higher and lower inflation, as well as times of inflationary spikes. The CPI for December 2022 was the first deflationary report until the updated seasonal revisions were applied. CPI March 2023 is not nearly as shocking of a report given the weight revision.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, for example, the rate of inflation in the US was quite high, reaching a peak of over 14% in 1980. This period was characterized by a combination of factors, including an increase in energy prices due to the oil crisis, a rise in commodity prices, and increased government spending.

On the other hand, the late 1990s and early 2000s were characterized by a period of low inflation, with the CPI hovering around 2% or less. This was due to a combination of factors, including a strong economy, low unemployment, and an increase in productivity.

In recent years, the rate of inflation has been relatively low, with the CPI fluctuating around 2% or less. However, there have been occasional spikes in inflation, such as in 2011 and early 2021, when prices increased rapidly due to supply chain disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It's important to note that while typical values of the CPI are around 2%, it's not uncommon for the rate of inflation to deviate from this value in the short term, as it can be influenced by a number of factors, including changes in the economy, energy prices, and government policy.
