Kelvin Kiptum, the hugely talented Kenyan distance runner who set a stunning world record for the marathon last year, has died in a car accident. He was 24.

In October, Kiptum eclipsed the great Eliud Kipchoge when he crossed the line in Chicago in 2hr 0min 35sec, improving his compatriot’s best by 34 seconds and setting up what promised to be a thrilling duel between the two Kenyans at the Olympic Games in Paris this summer.

But, according to reports in Kenya, Kiptum and his coach, Gervais Hakizimana, were killed in an accident on the Eldoret-Kaptagat road in the southwest of the country. One report said Kiptum had been driving the car, which left the road and hit a tree.
