Japanese startup ispace Inc. attempted to land its Hakuto-R Mission 1 (M1) spacecraft on the moon on Tuesday, in what would be the world's first lunar landing by a private company.
Ultimately, the crew said communication with the craft was lost, and engineers are investigating the situation.
It's currently unknown if Hakuto-R Mission 1 landed.
The 2.3-metre-tall M1 began an hour-long landing phase from the moon's orbit, some 100 kilometres above the surface moving at nearly 6,000 km/h.
