The day before Finn Askew hit the studio to record his latest track “Peach,” his optimism was peaking. The 19-year-old Brit singer texted his writing mate and assured him they were about to cut something great, and that because the song had “been in the bank for awhile,” he was “gassed” to finally share it. The Somerset lad with the massive pop skills knows when everything feels just right. His summery bop “Roses” is one of those songs your brain locks into after one spin. The Somerset lad has been focused on his craft for six years or so. As a kid, Finn tried out for a school musical, but didn’t get the part. Performing had piqued his interest however, and within a year he was writing daily, saving lyric ideas in his phone, and presenting the world his first real song, “Crazy Animals.” Later, arriving from the Wellington countryside on a mission, he hit London for solo gigs and shared cover songs on social media. Check the usual places to see fun takes on BTS’ “Dynamite” or Fetty Wap’s “Trap Queen.” Three years ago he copped a beat from YouTube, fired up Garageband, and gave us “Roses,” and was even clever enough to promote it with an image of lipstick-smooch lips just below his ear (“I play my guitar while she’s kissing my neck”). Since then, he’s worked with Whipped Cream and Lost Kings. Audience growth has followed, even on the other side of the world - KPop heroes NCT’s Taeyong and SuperM have recently given him shoutouts. If all goes right with pandemic mitigation in the next eight months, he’s scheduled to be part of the annual Barn on the Farm weekend in Gloucester next July. Alfie Templeman, Bow Anderson, Olivia Dean, Holly Humberstone and other young phenoms share the bill. Fans there should expect the kind of verve he brought to our Artists To Watch sessions for “Peach” and “Same Old Love” - this kid loves to play.
