In today's interview, Jan sits down with Chris Troka, founder of Focused Biz and someone with an amazing vision of what it actually takes to "get shit done" as an entrepreneur.
Chris was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. From pizza cook to healthcare receptionist, car sales, and failed attempts at other business ventures, his mind kept focusing on financial freedom, and all of these jobs couldn't provide that. Something had to change.
Thanks to a mentor, he got the idea to become a DJ. With this, it brought opportunity, but he didn't know how to grow a business. Yet.
Which brings us to today. He now runs an award-winning Wedding DJ & Photo Booth business, with a team of DJ's, earned a Marketing Degree and countless certifications, and now he's here to show others what he's learned over the years.

In today's interview, Jan sits down with Dom Dundee, one of the original members of the JJD Thoughts blog. For those of you that are unaware of Apex Communications Network's history, the JJD Thoughts Blog was a blog dedicated to mental, physical, and spiritual health written by Jan Almasy, Dom Dundee, and Jacob Sowers.
Although the original blog crew broke up, all members have stayed close friends over the years, and have consistently provided inspiration to Jan as he built Apex. In this episode, Jan and Dom get the chance to catch up on life over the past three years.
From reminiscing on powerlifting together in college to Dom's cancer journey and Jan's trip to Uganda - this is an emotional and wisdom-packed episode you won't want to miss.

I’d be remissed if I didn’t name some specific people who really helped me in this journey. With this being first time I went real public with my full journey, I’d like to publically thank those people.
My parents: moved into my 2 bedroom apartment for a year and half to help with my treatment. My dad was with me through every single chemo treatment and was my rock on the hardest days. My mom was the example being a cancer survivor and also gave me a shoulder to cry on. Nothing I say will ever put into words how blessed I am for them.
Katie Gilinsky, Alex Gilinsky, Jane Zentko, Janet Liffko McLeod, Diane Pavlic Zentko, and rest of my Florida family: the care packages, prayers, and texts were constant. I can't see you all in few months and celebrate.
Rose Tupta and Laura Dwyer : my nurses and two of my closest friends. They talked me off more ledges than I can even count.

On Feb. 3, just before 9 p.m. ET, a Norfolk Southern train derailed near East Palestine, Ohio, a town of about 4,800 people near the border with Pennsylvania. Nobody was hurt in the accident, officials say.
Most of the train's 150 rail cars were carrying cargo that was not hazardous, officials say, such as cement and frozen vegetables, according to a manifest of the derailed cars provided to the Environmental Protection Agency.
But 20 cars contained hazardous materials, according to an update this week from the National Transportation Safety Board, which is investigating the derailment.
In order to avoid a catastrophic explosion, officials evacuated residents and intentionally burned off some of the chemicals, creating a massive cloud of toxic chemicals.
Toxic waste has also been reported leaking into the Ohio River and many other water sources in the area, to the point where locals are able to scrape the creek beds and see rainbowlike shimmers on the surface of the water.
Despite government claims of safety, many residents are uneasy as local animals (including foxes, chickens, fish, dogs and others) come down with unexplainable illness and even die.
We received over 20 dms this week requesting we cover this topic - RJ and I are by no means experts and between our busy schedules did NOT have adequate time to deep dive into research, so I've included some up to date articles for your reading.
Do your research. Advocate for yourself. Never believe anything from a singular news source. Use your critical thinking, and look at Fox, CNN, MSNBC, Twitter, Reddit, iFunny, Instagram, Facebook, Google, etc.

In this episode, Jan interviews Blake Faulkner. Blake is an entrepreneur that is currently a student at Miami University (in Ohio) and whose latest project is called Bloxsmith, a marketplace for game developers building virtual worlds in the metaverse.
Blake has participated in both scouting startups for investment through multiple students who ran venture funds as well as pitched for funding of his own for Bloxsmith. Recently, he attended Draper University and took home first place on the accelerator’s “Demo Day” which allowed the Bloxsmith team to pitch on Stonks - where they achieved 525% over their anticipated investor interest.

Kyle has always been the spitting image of what true health and wellness looks like inside and out. Growing up as a multi-sport athlete from 4 years old, it was always natural to live a health-conscious lifestyle.
After Kyle got a job at a local physical therapy clinic. His life would change forever. A patient of his introduced him to cryotherapy. Kyle was one of the first in the United States to access cryotherapy in 2012. As he dug deeper into the science, he realized he was onto something life-changing. After managing the cryotherapy division of the clinic for roughly three years, he decided to go out on his own and at only 24 years old, this young man took a leap of faith and pioneered an industry that was untouched, opening the first iCRYO location in his hometown of League City, Texas, in October of 2015.
iCRYO is now set on a strategic goal of opening 1000+ locations, and Kyle is as dedicated as ever to providing everyone that comes in contact with iCRYO (whether employee or customer) a positive experience.

Our guest today, David Kundtz, grew up in the suburbs of Cleveland, Ohio. He went out west in the 1960s, as a Catholic priest, and spent 20 years in the Diocese of Idaho as well as a couple of years in Cali, Colombia, South America. Shortly after returning to the United States, he left ministry, and attended the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California and began a private practice as a family Psychotherapist. Now that we have entered the third decade of the millennium and the volume of change and the subsequent disruption we are experiencing is truly unprecedented.
As we like to say, You are either being disrupted, or you are the disruptor.
Or in other words are you Blockbuster or are you Netflix?
With that said for nearly 2 years, all of us have been experiencing some form of disruption.
When Jan and I interviewed Garry Gullar in Episode 8 in February, we talked about 2020 throwing us the mother of all disruptive curve balls. We are now approaching the end of 2021 and we wanted to add a third component to The Disruptor theme:
- How are you dealing with disruption?
- What can you do to survive these waves of disruption that seem to be hitting us on various fronts?
David has written a plethora of books on mindfulness and mental health. The most recent, The Art of Stopping: How to Be Still When You Have to Keep Going is the subject of this show.

In this episode of The Apex Podcast Jan and John take the show’s standard mantra a little bit off track. We still focus on “ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things”, but we are adding a bit of a personal twist.
A few years ago, Jan and John discovered that their respective families have roots in two cities only 35 KM apart and as many listeners know Jan is Slovak and his family hails from the town of Košice and John grew up not exactly sure of the name of his ancestral village.
In order to help clear up this ethnic confusion Jan and John had the pleasure of interviewing David Kundtz, whose grandfather (and John’s great-grandfather), Theodor Kundtz, emigrated to the United States in the 1870’s and in his own right was an ordinary person who accomplished extraordinary things, but that’s for another show.

We are in a period of digital disruption, and, as we like to say, “You are either being disrupted, or you are the disruptor.” Normally during The Disruptor Segment of The Apex Podcast, we discuss experiences and stories from the field that will empower any burgeoning entrepreneurs to deepen their design thinking practice and any naysayers to give it a second look.
During this segment of The Disruptor, Jan and John diverge slightly and decided to “disrupt” our normal format and host a panel discussion of four Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) experts who explore how the Horses & Humans Research Foundation (HHRF) funded grants have supported research on the benefits of Horse – Human interaction with Veterans with PTSD and students who have experienced trauma.
We think trauma is an extreme example of disruption and many of us have experienced some form of trauma in 2020 and 2021. We start the show by exploring how and why equine therapy services help trauma patients. This is followed by a discussion on how grant requests from HHRF support the continued research.
The panel moderators consist of Pebbles Turbeville, the Executive Director of Horses & Humans Research Foundation, and Tara Mahone, the CEO & Founder of Equine Immersion Project, LLC. Together they facilitate an excellent discussion on the serious and tough subject of Disrupting and Preventing Suicide through Equine-Assisted Services (EAS) for PTSD and Trauma Patients with Debbi Fisher, the Operations and Training Director for Hope for Heroes Equine Therapy Consulting and Hope for Heroes Horsemanship Center and Martha McNiel, the Director of DreamPower Horsemanship.

In this episode, Jan sits down with Catherine Zack. A corporate lawyer turned meditation teacher, relaxation guide, mindfulness coach, and wellness consultant. Catherine began her career as a litigator at a top-tier law firm in Washington, DC, a classic Type-A, high-achieving go-getter who checked all the right boxes and built a “successful-on-paper” legal career. But after a few years of that fast-paced, high-stakes, sleep-when-you’re done, big-law life, she finally looked up and realized that a career path toward the partnership wasn’t for her. We are in a period of digital disruption, and, as we like to say, “You are either being disrupted, or you are the disruptor.” During this segment of The Disruptor podcast, we discuss experiences and stories from the field that will empower any burgeoning entrepreneurs to deepen their design thinking practice and any naysayers to give it a second look.
Jan and John interview Nicholas Jayanty, a Principal User Experience Researcher at Red Hat and former film maker. Jayanty’s human-centric focus began early on. As a kid, he was into writing and storytelling. Film and theater classes segued into deep dives into critical theory and gender and race studies. As a college student at the University of Texas majoring in communications, with a focus on radio, TV and film, he made a movie about identity called Young Mutt.
After moving to New York City in 2004 and working as a freelance production assistant by initially “cold-calling at least 600 people,” Jayanty says, laughing, he co-founded a production company in Austin called Reversal Films with another producer, Victor Moyers.
Jayanty was part of a major effort at IBM to boost IBM Design Thinking, a specialized approach to design thinking for large-scale organizations and businesses.
“I’m very sensitive to how people self-identify and socially identify. My own identity is really fluid. With interaction design, it’s all about finding the truth and shattering assumptions,” said Jayanty. “You talk to your users, and they either discredit or validate those assumptions. It’s not about designing an experience. It’s about designing for an experience.”

Followed by a discussion of the five-step process that Nicholas and John co-created to help build a trusting relationship with their buyers during the early stages of the sales process.

In this episode of The Disruptor, Jan Almasy and John Kundtz interview The Honorable Judge Ray Headen from Cuyahoga County, OH.
Ray grew up in Glenville when it was a hub of excellence and home to Black professionals and county leaders. Even then, however, waves of poverty, violence, and racism plagued the community.
Challenged by these inequities, Headen was inspired to community service through his contact with Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other Black community leaders.
Headen was appointed Judge on Cuyahoga County’s Eighth District Court of Appeals by Governor John Kasich in December 2018.
In his time on the bench, he has gained invaluable insight into judicial reform and is currently pushing an initiative that would bring data-backed insights to the judicial system in order to inform the public, reduce wild fluctuations in sentencing, and restore faith in our justice system.

In this interview, Gary paints a picture of his early childhood, selling enough mints to pay for summer camp (without talking), and the values his family instilled in him that still act as a moral compass for him today.

In this episode, Jan and RJ sit down and dive into the journey of Centivax senior scientist Jack Wang. Jack talks about his childhood, moving to the United States in 2008, and all of the cultural/language barriers that he encountered along the way.
Eventually, he saw an opportunity to work as an antibody engineer in the biotech field with a company called Distributed Bio. He soon realized this was the only way to connect the gap between basic science and clinical research in order to make a difference in other people's lives.
The rest is history in the making.

Serena Draper-Hendershot is the Director of Outreach at The Martin Center, a non-profit organization on the southeast side of Canton, OH dedicated to collaborating with as many community partners as possible to eternally change Canton for the better.

In this episode, Serena dives into her journey from high school to becoming the Director of The Martin Center. Along the way, she experienced a change in major, multiple deaths in her family, and an ex-boyfriend that was shot and killed all within the span of six months.
She experienced days where she wished that she wasn't here, but it all changed when she asked a 14yr old boy "What do you want to be when you grow up?" and he told her "I'm not even going to make it to 18, so why does it matter."

Out of all of the many great civilizations in the ancient world, what was it that made the Greeks so special? And why are we millennia later so radically linked to them? Well, those are some of the very important questions we will examine during the extent of this podcast. In the western world, we can’t possibly understand our society if we don’t understand its Greek origins and how it developed, as there’s a great deal of continuity from ancient Greece to the modern world. Greece was the cornerstone of western civilization. But the question is how did this come about?

In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Dr. Jean-Philippe Burckert. JP received his Master’s in Chemistry with a specialization in Life Sciences from the University of Kaiserslautern in 2012 and completed his Ph.D. studies at the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) in Bioinformatics and Computational Immunology.
His Ph.D. work was presented at over 20 international conferences. After academia, JP joined the Bioinformatics consulting firm BISC Global as Senior Bioinformatics Consultant, where he helped to establish the new department in Boston, MA.
Leveraging his rare skillset in deciphering immune repertoires, JP worked with over a dozen small and large pharma and biotech companies in the Cambridge and SF Bay area providing the specialized bioinformatics capacity for their immune-oncology, autoimmune disease, antibody discovery and vaccine design groups.
JP is now the head of the computational and informatics efforts at Centivax and leads an amazing team of scientists and informaticists.
In a statement on his episode:

In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Shahrad Daraeikia. Shahrad spends some time talking about his journey to becoming a scientist at the forefront of innovation in the biotech industry. This journey involved changing majors from Pre-Med to Pre-Pharmacy followed by the decision to go to graduate school for something completely different, on the other side of the country.

Instead, Shahrad opted to attend graduate school at the University of San Francisco in pursuit of a Masters in Science in Biotechnology. Shahrad then encountered Jake Glanville (CEO of Distributed Bio), became an intern at the company, and has since grown into a position that required him to directly impact the revolutionary techniques being utilized to discover and engineer powerful antibodies in the fight against a global pandemic.

Sarah Ives is an immune engineer. In 2015 she joined Distributed Bio as employee #6 as project lead for the Centivax universal influenza vaccine program as a Principal Scientist, where she leads the vivarium operations in Guatemala and the vaccine assays in California. In addition to the influenza vaccine studies, she directs all contract research programs for therapeutic antibody discovery and optimization with phage display libraries at Distributed Bio, including over 50 discovery campaigns for biotechnology companies and pharmaceutical companies across the globe.

In this episode Jan and RJ interview Airforce Veteran and President of Walsh University Dr. Tim Collins.
Dr. Collins spent the past 14 years at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, the nation’s oldest and largest university-affiliated research center based in Maryland. Collins also spent 23 years in the U.S. Air Force, including eight years as a senior officer responsible for operations in the United States and Asia.
In 1976 Dr. Collins graduated from high school at age 16 followed by a two-year journey through the Georgia Military College where he received his associate degree in engineering. He then enrolled in the U.S. Air Force Academy. In the episode we discuss just how intense the service academies are, and how they are considered liberal arts institutions.
The apex of this episode includes a conversation stemming from the events around a terrorist attack on Khobar Towers in 1996. Dr. Collins earned a purple heart after being wounded at Khobar Towers. The bomb wounded hundreds of troops and claimed the lives of 19 service members.
The conversation came to an end with Dr. Collins offering advice to emerging leaders, leaders that are actively trying to lead in a crisis, as well as how he manages stressful situations.

In this episode, Jan and RJ interview Ryan Coblentz. As An accomplished bodybuilder, a #DogDad and a great friend Ryan has accomplished a lot in his time here. Leading up to this podcast Jan put himself through a 12 week training regiment with RJ to mimick what Ryan was going through on his journey to the NPC “Think Pink” Mid-Atlantic Bodybuilding show in WV. Many times it was Jan and Ryan on the treadmills alone at 4am doing cardio to start the day.
Beyond that, Ryan has a lot to offer the listeners with lessons of perseverance through injury, and how he managed to pull himself out of an emotional abyss after life hit him with everything all at once.
