Kinmen or Quemoy is about an hour away by plane from Taipei's Songshan Airport and located (at its closest point) only 2 km (1.2 mi) away from Mainland China's Fujian Province, near the city of Xiamen.
Kinmen sits precariously between Mainland China and Taiwan and was the site of many battles between Communist and Nationalist parties. Nowadays, it relies mainly on tourism, export of its famous Kaoliang Liquor and for specialties such as peanut candy and delicious snacks.
During COVID-19, visitors from Mainland China are not allowed to visit the island, so we were able to see a few boats with the Chinese flag zipping around the waters but unable to disembark. Taiwan's government (as of 7/17/2020) is not allowing foreign visitors outside of Alien Resident Certificate holders and Taiwanese citizens to enter Taiwan, so the island of Quemoy is quieter than usual.
