In a recent incident, Taiwan's government issued an island-wide security alert, alleging that a Chinese satellite had flown over the southern airspace of Taiwan. The alert, labeled a "presidential alert," was sent to mobile phone users, describing the object initially as a "missile" in English and a "satellite" in Chinese. However, Taiwan's defense ministry later attributed the mistake to "negligence" and clarified that the object was a rocket that had passed at a high altitude over Taiwanese airspace.

The incident occurred just days before a crucial election, leading to concerns and reactions from various quarters. Taiwan's Foreign Minister, Joseph Wu, labeled the satellite launch as a provocation, akin to recent instances of Chinese balloons being spotted over the island. He characterized these activities as "grey-zone" tactics, emphasizing the ongoing threat of conflict between Taiwan and China.

Despite the alert and concerns raised by Taiwan, China's state media reported the launch of a new astronomical satellite, named the Einstein Probe, from Sichuan province. China did not provide prior details about the satellite launch, and the flight plan was not disclosed.

The main opposition party in Taiwan, Kuomintang, criticized the alert, accusing it of misleading the public. The incident adds to the existing tensions between Taiwan and China, with Taiwan consistently raising alarms about increased Chinese military actions, including fighter jets regularly flying over the strait as part of a "grey zone" strategy. The recent incidents involving balloons and the satellite launch contribute to the perception of China engaging in psychological warfare and threatening aviation safety in the region. Despite the tensions, the alert did not impact foreign exchange markets or cause fluctuations in the Taiwan dollar, according to traders.
