French Open: History Makers
We saw history being made all across the courts at Roland Garros this week. Obviously you know about Iga; now a four-time Slam champion, her third at Roland Garros — all in a day’s work for the Pole. Djokovic did his thing as always, but can we talk about Hsieh, Kato, Korneeva, Kraijek, Oda and De Groot. That’s where the real action is at! Tennis gatekeeping asides, it’s been a great two weeks and we round it all up.

The French Open has arrived! And it wouldn’t be the French Open without lots of booing, high profile loses and geopolitical issues. With Dev away in London, Simon is joined by Priyanka Dobson to unpack a mammoth week in tennis. All of that plus we find out exactly what Denis Shapovalov eats during the course of the week! Enjoy!

French Open: The New Big Three?
The French Open is here!

On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang discuss Rafael Nadal’s absence, the events in Rome that shook up the WTA and ask what is making Daniil Medvedev so good on clay? Then they get into the big questions at Roland Garros, including who can contend with Swiatek, Rybakina and Sabalenka, is it Djokovic and Alcaraz or bust and who will break through from the Men’s bottom half. In parting shots, Simona Halep faces more doping charges and Roger Fededer has a good time on Twitter.

Replay: The Hand Match
The French Open may happen at some point this year but it must be said, we’re missing the Parisian clay right now. This week we head back to 2003 and the classic semifinal between Serena Williams and Justine Henin. Serena was on a 33-match winning streak at the slams but it was not meant to be on this day in what was an extraordinary contest. You don’t get a moniker like ‘The Hand Match’ for nothing.

Rome: A Recipe For Disaster
To be honest, the cake tastes bad in Madrid anyway… Devang and Simon tackle a huge crop of news over the past fortnight including a titanic battle between the world’s top two. Carlos Alcaraz retained his Madrid Open title and went back to World Number 1. Will he play Djokovic (finally) in Rome? Will we ever see Rafael Nadal play again? All that plus a whole lot of sexism coming out of Madrid.

Madrid: Mirra!
Welcome to Madrid, where the days are long and the time between matches is even longer! While Simon and Devang do complain briefly about the lengthy events on the WTA and ATP, they actually do discuss tennis on this week’s Open Era. Teenager Mirra Andreeva is the talk of the town after ousting Haddad-Maia and Leylah Fernandez while Dominic Thiem and Stefanos Tsitsipas took match of the week honors home. The guys also recap Carlos Alcaraz’s latest triumph while tackling the topical question on everyone’s mind regarding Iga Swiatek. In parting shots, they say goodbye to human linespeople and try to explain what the Met Gala is. They tried their best.

This week we profile someone that never became world number one or captured a Grand Slam, but accomplished something no other player has . David Nalbandian defied explanation, until you saw what he could do on the court when everything was just ‘right.’ We saw that happen in 2007 at the Madrid Open when he became the first and only person to beat Nadal, Djokovic and Federer at the same tournament.

Monte Carlo: Andrey Rublev (2023)
Andrey Rublev is the champion of Monte Carlo.

On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang tackle a brilliant week in the French Riviera which concluded the way ‘most’ of us wanted. The guys discuss Rublev’s breakthrough and what makes him likable among other things.

Staying in Monaco, how did it go for Sinner, Medvedev, Djokovic, Rune and the lot? Mixed results but there’s plenty to talk about.

The Billie Jean King Cup qualifying round is over and Canada is through to the finals thanks to Leylah Fernandez and Gabby Dabrowski. How did they do and does Canada have a shot in November?

Finally, in Parting Shots the ongoing recovery of Rafael Nadal hits another snag and there’s plenty of Tennis in TIME’s most influential people of 2023.

Special: Wu Yibing - It’s About Making History
I feel like we all have our own personal stories as to why we pick up a racket. Some do it because of sibling rivalry, some because of the social aspect and a desire for connection. I reckon there's a decent percentage of us who do it for exercise purposes. And in Wu Yinbings case, the Chinese superstar only started playing because his mother wanted him to lose weight at just six years of age.

This week on Open Era. Simon takes a look at newly minted first time ATP Tour Title winner Wu Yibing, his story and what it means to have a Chinese male player win a title.

That combination created an incredible moment.

Replay: Just How Green Is Tennis?
In early November, the ATP became a signatory of the United Nations Sports for Climate Action. This announcement came off the back of the COP 26 summit which took place in Glasgow, wherein world leaders were challenged to accelerate sustainability and climate related actions on a global scale.
The ATP produced a document which outlined the commitments it had made along with the key commitments within the United Nations agreements. Herein the ATP adopted the framework which committed to two specific targets. Achieving a 50% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2030 and Net Zero emissions by 2040.
Realistically how achievable are these goals that are set out by the ATP? Can tennis continue to operate in its current globalised format against the backdrop of natural disasters and unfettered consumption? And can growth continue to exist in sports across the board?
To help answer those questions this week I was joined by Sam Bliss, a graduate fellow at the Gund Institute for the Environment at the University of Vermont.

Miami: Ash Barty’s Retirement Party
At 25, Ashleigh Barty is calling it a day.

On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang devote the majority of the show to this week’s bombshell news: Ash Barty stepping away from tennis as the World No. 1. We talk about her legacy on the court, the way she carries herself off of it and the path other players may follow.

Also this week, it’s Iga Swiatek’s world now, JJ Wolf hits the shot of the decade, and our parting shots, including the latest from the Miami Open.

Kinda, sorta joking but it was a remarkable week at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Devang and Simon head into the Open Era Bar to digest a few drinks along with some spicy opinions.

Lyon: No War Please!
Simon is joined by James Shank of Tick Tok Tennis to discuss another bumper week in the Tennis world.

As conflict rages on in the Ukraine, the ATP and WTA decide to suspend tournaments in Russia. Would they have done this without the threat of a strike? We’ll do our best to tackle that very dodgy question.

The WTA actually had tournaments! Praise the lord! We unpack a full schedule before looking at a high profile doping case.

Parting shots goes from a Maria Sakkari cover shoot to Holger Rune quotes. You won’t want to miss this one.

Acapulco: It All Falls Down
On this week’s Open Era, friend of the show Vivek Jacob joins Simon and Devang to cover a heavy week.

As players on the ATP and WTA react to Russia’s invasion in Ukraine, the guys consider what’s next while discussing the men’s decision to go to China later this year.

Alexander Zverev made headlines (once again) for the worst reasons, Daniil Medvedev reached #1, and Rafael Nadal made it 15-0. Meanwhile Iga Swiatek made a hell of a statement in Doha.

All that, plus our parting shots coming up in a jam packed Open Era. Hope you enjoy it.

Too much tennis.

On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang dive into the 800 tournaments that took place this week. Big wins for Andrey Rublev and Jelena Ostapenko lead the guys to zoom out a bit and see where the two players are heading in 2022.

Of course, there was the Novak Djokovic interview with the BBC as well. How bad was it and what did we learn?

Finally in Parting Shots, it’s the Jannik Sinner coachmegddon aftermath, some choice words for tax havens, and the curious case of Alex De Minaur.

On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang discuss FAA doing the damn thing in Rotterdam. Plus, a titanic final in St.Petersburg saw Anett Kontaveit outlast Maria Sakkari. Also, some Del Potro thoughts including Buenos Aires’ ranking among the best tournaments in the world.

Well, what have we learned so far in Melbourne?

On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang tackle broadcast issues in the U.S, John McEnroe and Cliff Drysdale yelling at clouds, and the first ‘Netflix moments’ of the year.

Then, they review the losses we’ve seen, rating the performances of Osaka, Zverev, Gauff, and Raducanu before casting an eye towards the final week.

To close, it’s parting shots, which feature Ash Barty in Vogue and our dismay at the fashion at the Australian Open. It stinks! But this week’s show does not.

What an incredibly stupid week that was.

Novak Djokovic may or may not be allowed to play in the Australian Open, and that somehow doesn’t feel like the biggest takeaway from a story that captured the attention of the wider world.

The Open Era Holiday Spectacular!
As we all sit here, bathed in the afterglow of the holiday spirit, I wonder how we’ll all remember 2021 in Tennis?
Yes we almost saw history on the ATP side with a certain world number 1 coming ever so close to tennis immortality. Yes, we saw an unheralded British teenager do something which had never been done in professional tennis and romp to a first Grand Slam title.
But lost between all of these grand narratives were to stories which stick with us on an individual level. Because sports, for all their flaws, are personal.
It’s the drawing of the blanket closer to you as you watch a favourite player try and serve out a match. It’s the flurry of messages on your favourite platform with friends when a story breaks, and it’s the elation and heartbreak of a result which leaves you numb in a way only sport can produce.
This week on Open Era, we revisit the 2021 season through those small moments. For every Grand Slam victory is one beer too many to commiserate a failed result.
To help me along that journey I reached out to a few guests and supporters of this show.

Replay: Juan Martin del Potro Digs Deep in Rio
Men’s tennis at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics was turned upside down by Juan Martin del Potro. The Tower of Tandil stunned world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the first round. Del Potro, recovering from a wrist injury, would meet Rafael Nadal in the semifinal and remind us why the lanky Argentinian was such a unique talent.

Just How Green Is Tennis?

Well that was quite a week. We thought that this time of year in the tennis calendar was supposed to be quiet. We weren’t quite ready and prepared for tennis to turn into the epicentre of a geo-political incident, which may have incredibly far-reaching impacts on relations between global superpowers.

US Open: Teenage Dreams
Was that the best Grand Slam tournament we’ve ever seen? Vivek Jacob joins Simon and Devang to examine an utterly batshit US Open. Among the topics: the all-teenager women’s final, what’s next for Leylah Fernandez and Emma Raducanu and Daniil Medvedev thwarting Novak Djokovic’s quest for tennis immortality. Also, our favourite matches, commentators and outfits, and some general words about how much this tournament made us love tennis again. It’s a good one.

US Open: Everybody Hates Stef
Week number 2 is upcoming at Flushing Meadows. Now that we’ve got the bathroom jokes out of our system we can get to the bottom of all the action which took place in week 1 at the US Open.

Sorry, before this gets too corny, let’s address the elephant in the room. Stefanos Tsitsipas takes a long long time in the bathroom. We talk about what he might be doing there before going rapid fire with 10 matches which caught our eye in 20 minutes.

US Open: You Need More People
As Kele Okereke once sang: So Here We Are. Main draw play begins Monday in New York City and the lads are...relatively excited. We’ll go with that. On today’s show, Simon and Devang examine the latest from the US Open, including an update on the Alexander Zverev assault allegations. There’s also a new Roger Federer book out, an excerpt of which appeared in the New York Times and piqued our interest. That plus the draws, Novak Djokovic’s quest for tennis immortality and of course, some excellent predictions. We end, as always, with our parting shots and section within a segment on another classic Open Era. (Content warning: 4:10-14:07 - intimate partner domestic violence and abuse is discussed).

French Open: High-Stefinition
We were treated to a stunning final week in Paris with possibly the greatest clay court match of all time included in the mix. Barbora Krejcikova decided to take a break from winning in Doubles (which she still won) to win the Singles title and a small kid who doesn’t know how to fight became a man, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the terminator that is Novak Djokovic. The end came so quickly. After spending the last year month in Australia, Naomi Osaka and Novak Djokovic departed Melbourne with the biggest trophies up for grabs. On this week’s Open Era, Simon and Devang break down both finals, and hit on what they loved and hated from this year’s Australian Open: Stefanos Tsitsipas, electronic line calling, injuries, Jennifer Brady, Aslan Karatsev, Serena Williams, FILA, fake crowds, real crowds plus plenty, plenty more. It’s Gone. It’s Done. Yes Mr. Frodo. 2020 is over now.

We head to Paris for the Rafael Nadal Open...I mean, the French Open as our look back at 2020 continues on Open Era.

We round out the year with a flurry of ATP Tournaments, a solitary WTA event (which is shocking in its own right), and shake the magic 8 ball to find out who will be this years ATP World Tour Final Winner.

The Story of 2020 in Tennis: Part 2 – The Pandemic
“I'm not loving you, the way I wanted to
What I had to do, had to run from you

So keep ya COVID lockdown”

That’s right, the tennis world was abruptly shutdown when the novel coronavirus hit the sporting world. Watching the tennis world wrestle with its “new normal” was a rather remarkable sequence of events. Do you remember the time when the Miami Open really thought it could stage a tournament in early April? Ah those were the days.

Strap yourself in for the Novak Djokovic Magical Mystery Ride. It has everything. Charlatans, Positive Energy Water, shifting of blame, and of course, everyone getting COVID.

David Nalbandian: Giant Slayer
This week we profile someone that never became world number one or captured a Grand Slam, but accomplished something no other player has . David Nalbandian defied explanation, until you saw what he could do on the court when everything was just ‘right.’ We saw that happen in 2007 at the Madrid Open when he became the first and only person to beat Nadal, Djokovic and Federer at the same tournament.

Federer, Safin & Houston
It’s not their most famous match, but when looking back on the Federer-Safin rivalry, this second set tiebreak must be chronicled. This week Open Era heads to 2004 and the Tennis Masters cup semifinal in Houston. Federer was finishing off a simply dominant season and Safin laid the groundwork for one more slam run. That combination created an incredible moment.

The Hand Match
The French Open may happen at some point this year but it must be said, we’re missing the Parisian clay right now. This week we head back to 2003 and the classic semifinal between Serena Williams and Justine Henin. Serena was on a 33-match winning streak at the slams but it was not meant to be on this day in what was an extraordinary contest. You don’t get a moniker like ‘The Hand Match’ for nothing.

A note from Simon and Devang: Black Lives Matter. Inhumane police brutality that is perpetuated by a culture of white supremacy must end. We fully support those protesting for change around the world.

Goran Wins ‘The People’s Final’
10,000 tennis fans packed Centre Court on a Monday to watch two men battle for a prize that had eluded them in the past. Patrick Rafter had come close in 2000, losing to Pete Sampras in the final. Goran Ivanišević’s date with destiny at Wimbledon was a long time coming. He had lost in the final three times prior to that July day in 2001, where a legion of rabid Aussie fans and Goran devotees gathered for an unforgettable afternoon.

Graf, Seles, and the ‘95 US Open Final
The actions of Gunter Parche changed the sport of tennis for ever on April 30, 1993. Monica Seles was on track to smash the record books until Parche, a Steffi Graf superfan, stabbed Seles during a changeover at the Hamburg tournament. Graf and Seles were lodged in a rivalry that was on track to redefine the sport. Seles remarkably came all the way back, meeting her great rival once again in the 1995 US Open Final.
