One World, One Love, One Healing

Dr Jim & Rafael are back!

The band is back. Dr. Jim & Rafael are back together agin exploring healing on a global level. Rafael shares his thoughtful impressions of Georgia (not the peach state, but the country) where he did a recent training on Compassion, Addiction, and Trauma. Rafael also has gone to where the action is - - doing (virtual) trainings for professionals in the Ukraine and Russia. As almost everyone knows the Ukraine and Russia are currently the epicenter of war and trauma. Rafael plans to sojourn to that part of the world soon to impart his wisdom, to teach professionals in this war torn region his compassionate approach to healing trauma. In applying his craft across geopolitical lines, Rafael has had to be the Magellan of intra-psychic and inter-psychic terrain. In so doing, he has noticed the oneness we all share, particularly when it comes to trauma and how to heal it. As healers we are a formulary of medicine and wisdom. The elixir combines compassion, wisdom, humility, love, kindness, resiliency, and the thoughtful application of Gestalt therapy.

In this interview Dr. Jim also discusses his book project, which is still stalled out. He runs some of the themes by Rafael and feels inspired again to write. Dr. Jim also finds inspiration in the Detroit Lions who had their first winning season since 2017 under their extraordinary coach, Dan Campbell. Dr. Jim wants to channel his internal Coach Campbell to finish his book.

Chris Huitfeldt: Interventionist to Celebrities, Stars, and Regular Folks

Chris Huitfeldt (pronounced Wheatfelt) owns a company called, Terra Firma, which means solid ground. It provides intervention services for celebrities, professional athletes, and common folks. He even does pro bono work to help the economically disadvantaged. His philosophy is that “every good foundation starts on solid ground.” Terra Firma usually provides interventions for individuals with addiction and dual diagnosis disorders. His group also offers recovery coaching, consultation, and case management work.

Chris believes that interventions are not designed to surprise, jolt, shame, or corner someone into getting help. Instead it is a thoughtful, caring, and loving process that can lead to miraculous changes. He believes that interventions —when done correctly — can have a very positive ripple effect. Successful interventions can provide healing to individuals, families, and communities.

Chris’s philosophy is that interventions work best when they are predicated on love, kindness, and compassion. He is also realistic that the work often starts after someone lands in a facility. Yet, getting someone into a facility is a success story in and of itself.

Chris bears a striking resemblance to the erudite punk rocker, Henry Rollins, from the band, Black Flag, in his younger days. (Chris took this comparison as a compliment during the interview. Phew.) Interestingly, Rollins and Chris share some of the same philosophy. Rollins once said that “someone, somewhere is thinking about you,” and “scar tissue is stronger than regular tissue.” Interventions work because someone is thinking about you (and loving you) enough to help you, especially when you least want help but most need it. And the recovery process can help become stronger in the broken places that adhere beneath the scar tissue.

Running with Ray Horwitz: Evolutionary Psychiatry

Dr. James Bramson interviews Dr. Ray Horwitz

Drs. Jim and Ray were undergraduate classmates and roommates. As college kids, they bonded over music, psychology, humor, and working out. And now, as seasoned professionals, they both subscribe to the philosophy that good self-care is good client-care.

Dr. Ray is a an accomplished psychiatrist and a man of many talents. He is a skilled musician, a triathlete, and a sought-after teacher. He’s taught classes in medicine at Emory University and in pharmacology for physicians across the country. His clientele ranges from struggling moms to Olympic athletes.

And he’s a mensch to boot.

Dr. Ray agreed to be interviewed, not for self promotion, but to support other medical professionals and therapists who might stumble or may make avoidable mistakes. Plus he wants to make sure patients are better consumers of psychiatry. He talks about how he will go above and beyond to serve his patients in ways other docs may not. Dr. Ray also kvetches about the challenges of prescribing controlled substances and how it hamstrings physicians.

His natural humor and wisdom shine through when he discusses the evolution of psychiatry, and how it must address a new epidemic: loneliness. We learn that loneliness is as lethal as smoking 15-cigarettes a day. Dr. Ray is concerned that telemedicine may perpetuate a client’s sense of isolation and loneliness. Not sure if it leads to more or less smoking? You decide.

To get on the same wave length as Dr. Ray. I suggest you listen to this Podcast while working out, running, biking, lifting weights, etc. (The only way I got him to this was to go on a run with him!) However, he would not recommend that you listen while swimming, doing handstands in yoga, helicopter skiing, or rock climbing…. but whatever works.

Vann Duke: Trainer for the Stars and Sojourners in the Second Half of Life

Vann Duke is a celebrated fitness trainer, life coach, and commercial actor (check out his latest Jeep commercial). He trains and coaches people in the "Second Half of Life." Once voted “top trainer in the Bay Area” by the Guardian, Vann’s committed to his clients looking and feeling their best —whether that’s Oscar-winning superstars, like Viola Davis, or the less famous but equally hardworking second half’ers.

Vann splits his time between France and Calistoga, California. This juxtaposition of cultures has informed his view on everything. Vann has led international workshops (even a few with Dr. Jim) that have been described as transformative and life changing. He is currently offering a special program called “Jump Start” that involves a fitness assessment, customized training, coaching, and tools for “ageless aging” (a salient termed coined by Maddy Dychtwald).

Though at first blush Vann and Dr. Jim may appear at odds— with Vann focused on getting people off the couch and Dr. Jim inviting them back on — they both strive to maximize their clients’ true potential, and share some insider tips on how to make that happen.

Mindful Parenting: An Interview with Lyn Benson from the Land Down Under.

Dr. James H. Bramson Interviews Psychologist, Family Therapist, and Parenting Educator, Lyn Benson

Lyn Benson has sold out seminars on the subject of Mindful Parenting in Australia. She has also trained internationally in the area of mindfulness. Lyn Benson and Dr. Bramson met back in 2006 and have taught workshops together around the world - including Turkey, Peru, New Zealand, Australia, and Bali. Dr. Bramson has been threatening to pull her out of “retirement” to get the band back on the road again, or at least teach a mindful parenting seminar on-line (due to popular demand).

Lyn was strongly influenced by the work of internationally recognized Australian psychologist, Moshe Lang. Moshe Lang is one of the pioneers of family therapy in Australia and has had a huge influence on Lyn’s work. Over time Lyn’s interests have evolved as she has dedicated herself to teaching parents how to be more mindful. In this podcast, Lyn passionately discusses her own take on gender fluidity, the “coming out” process for non-binary kids, and what every parent should know.

Lyn is funny, intelligent, and heart centered. She has dedicated her career to making sure children grow up learning how to love and accept themselves. Lyn believes that parents (who are truly mindful) can help their children optimize their own self-worth. She emphasizes teaching children to love themselves unconditionally. Lyn extols the importance of parents loving their children for who they are …. and who they are becoming … whether gender fluid, non-binary, gay, straight, or somewhere in between. Lyn also made some pithy comments on the differences between the United States and Australia when it comes to paying for therapy, practicing psychology, the freedom of choice, and the impact of politics on the human condition.

Psychedelics, Virginia Satir, and Fritz Pearls, from The Expansive Mind of Dr. Gerald Smith.

Dr. Gerald Smith has led workshops at the storied Esalen Institute for over 50 years. He is friends with one of its originals co-founders, Michael Murphy, whom he interviewed on an earlier podcast. Jerry attended the University of Pennsylvania and Stanford University, earning an M.B.A and Doctoral degree in Educational Psychology. Jerry is still a practicing clinical psychologist at the age of 92. And he is as sharp and quick-witted as ever. He has written two books, hosted a T.V. show, and loves leading workshops for couples. Jerry participated in some of the pioneering psychedelic research experiments (in the 1950’s) when it was legal and quite provocative. He reported positive results using psychedelics and discusses some of his own experiences, along with the tremendous benefits and pitfalls of plant and lab-based medicine. Jerry believes psychedelics can expand our perceptual field. He stresses that psychedelics can potentially benefit people suffering from depression, anxiety, and trauma, but that caution is warranted.

Jerry was also trained by such luminaries as Virginia Satir and Fritz Pearls. He knows he was privileged to know each of them personally and professionally … and pulls back the curtains on what they were really like. In this podcast, Jerry discusses how Psychedelics, Virginia Satir, and Fritz Pearls impacted his perceptual field …. and what matters most at this stage in his life.

Rooting for Children: A Gestalt Approach

Rafael Cortina & Felicia Carroll Break New Ground

Felicia Carroll, is a Licensed Marriage, Family Therapist and Registered Play Therapist-Supervisor in private practice in Solvang, California. She is a natural story teller, child advocate, celebrated Gestalt trainer, and consummate gardener. One could argue that Felicia is the Shel Silverstein of Gestalt Therapy. Her work is the metaphoric “Givingtree” that keeps on giving. Better to consider how to give back, recognize the gifts in all of us, and plant seeds, versus taking from others. Her passion for Gestalt therapy and children recently turned her attention to the refugee crisis in Eastern Europe—particularly, how war impacts children. Felicia is dedicated to helping clients work through their “unresolved situations” versus their “unfinished business.”

Rafael and Felicia wax metaphors in their dialectic. They discuss the importance of rootedness, interconnectedness in human beings, mushrooms, and redwood trees. Interestingly, fungi are closer to man than plants in their DNA structure and their capacity for motility. Rafael and Felicia also discuss redwood trees and how they are like human beings as they need to stand together to survive. They have a deeply interconnected underground root system. Similarly, human beings survive best when they are deeply rooted. Felicia even noted that human beings and trees communicate in a clever way to protect one another. Trees release pheromones like humans do. In the case of trees, pheromones are released when danger is imminent. It activates their antibodies in order to survive. Human connection or “togetherness” also activates antibodies and bolster our immune system.

Felicia takes us on on her journey from being a teacher, educator at the Esalen Institute, academic at UCSB, to becoming the Founder/Co-Director of the West Coast Institute for Gestalt Therapy with Children and Adolescents (www.westcoastinstitute.us). In this podcast, Felicia plants seeds in our frontal lobe where some of our best ideas can germinate.

America’s Suicide Epidemic: What Everyone Should Know and Is Afraid to Ask

Dr. James H. Bramson interviews Dr. Josh Wilson and Eti Valdez-Kaminsky

What do Naomi Judd, Anthony Bourdain, Robin Williams, Cleopatra, Mark Rothko, and David Foster Wallace have in common? They have all suicided. Suicide is an epidemic during these times of tumult. Obviously, suicide and depression impacts more than celebrities. Depression and suicide impact every, age, race, and gender. Depression and suicide do not revere white privilege, or bow down to someone’s socioeconomic status. Suicidal thoughts and feelings lead to isolation, anhedonia and despair. Depression is an equal opportunity destroyer and disrupter in our society. Depression and suicide can impact every religion, political group, white collar workers, blue collar workers, the educated, uneducated, and everyone in between. Suicide rips apart families and communities. The CDC reports that the financial cost on our society averages 70 billion a year (in just medical and work-loss costs alone). However, the human toll is incalculable.

Most importantly, irreplaceable lives (souls) are lost every minute because the general pubic is afraid to discuss death, depression, and suicide. Shame causes suicide to go underground where it becomes the silent killer. Individuals who are suffering do not want to be seen as burdensome. People who suffer the most are often too reticent or afraid to talk about it. It is often the case that people who recognize suicidal tendencies in those they love (or care about) are afraid of acting on what they know. In fact, Dr. Wilson points out in this episode that we lost a human being every 11-minutes (in the United States). So during the course of one Podcast episode (under 60 minutes) we lost 5 to 6 Americans.

Dr. Wilson (Co-Founder and President of East Bay Mindfulness Center, Psychology Inc. and West Coast Mindfulness Institute) and Eti Kaminsky (Clinical Director of EBMC, Psychology, Inc.) discuss their unique and shared approach to preventing and treating suicide. They raise awareness regarding the complex and underlying issues surrounding depression and suicide, particularly among our youth. Suicide is the third leading cause of death in individuals aged 10 to 14. It is the second leading cause of death for people aged 25-34 in the United States. This episode concludes by offering everyone hope and a way forward. Dr. Wilson and Eti Kaminsky stress the myriad ways therapy can instill hope, joy, and purpose driven awareness in people who suffer the most. Listeners please note the Suicide Prevention (Lifeline number) - 998. Let us all be life guards or guardians.

The Architecture of Loss and Creativity: From the Mind of a Gestalt Expert & Leadership Consultant

Rafael Cortina interviews another Gestalt icon - Morgan Goodlander

Morgan Goodlander is a public speaker, president of the San Francisco Gestalt Institute, and leadership counselor. He has worked in 17 countries and has managed educational programs for the Esalen Institute. Rafael Cortina continues his mission to introduce us to extraordinary thought leaders and influencers throughout the Gestalt world. Many luminaries continue to be pulled into Rafael’s gravitational field and you may ask yourself, when does the man rest?

In this humorous and riveting podcast, Morgan Goodlander describes growing up Gestalt. He was influenced by a family friend of his dad’s. A man he jokingly refers to as “Socrates.” While others his age were probably more concerned about going to prom and mastering the SAT’s, Morgan had deeper concerns. As a teenager, Morgan was exploring how to apply the theory of Gestalt therapy to his own life. Later on, he observed that it is Gestalt therapy that works best for his clients.

Morgan opines about the repetitive nature of loss throughout history. He explores the role that creativity plays in finding elegant solutions to redundant problems we all face. Problems that are embedded in common losses. He noted that the key losses we must overcome include the loss of our sense of belonging, of prestige, and of the sense of having or being enough. Both Rafael and Morgan discuss the basic tenants of Gestalt in their own dialectic. The role of personal responsibility, experiencing life in the present moment, leading from within, understanding the dialectic between self and others, as well as the dialectic between self and our environment, and learning from our repetitive experiences. Morgan paints the picture of what it is like to be stuck in a “Ground Hog Day” vortex. After listening to this episode, you may think about how to step outside of the self-limiting (ontological and phenomenological) dimensions of life - - that stop you from seeing infinite possibilities for creativity and change.

Self as an Instrument for Transformational Change: The Synthesis of Coding, Organizational Development, and Relational Gestalt Work.

Rafael Cortina interviews John Hovell

John Hovell is the Co-Founder of Stratactical and is a self-described Relational-Organizational-Gestalt expert. John opines that you “cannot take a group (or organization) where you have not gone yourself.” John learned through his organizational development (OD) practice that you don’t want to make the client wrong but, rather, meet the client halfway. He is most passionate about knowledge development, organizational development, and Relational-Organizational-Gestalt consulting. John pays attention to the small and big details, including what is going on inside his body, within himself, within groups, and between groups. He looks at “levels of system.” Specifically, he looks at the system by considering the following realms: Intrapersonal, interpersonal, subgroup, whole system, bounded system, etc. He likens the OD perspective to Gestalt work. He looks at “self” as an instrument for change and illumination. John discusses his overall purpose: “This body, experience, and consciousness is a gift. My purpose is to share this gift in a relational way.”

Demystifying and Overcoming Fear and Shame: The Odyssey of (Gestalt Luminary) Richard Dennison

Demystifying and Overcoming Fear and Shame: The Odyssey of (Gestalt Luminary) Richard Dennison

Rafael Cortina interviews Richard Dennison

Rafael is going global again. He is making his virtual way through Europe, and has landed another humble luminary in the Gestalt World, Richard Dennison. Richard hails from the southwest corner of England. Richard Dennison first worked in a psychiatric hospital in London at the ripe old age of 19. He actually found that studying psychology at University was disappointing. It paled in comparison to real human life and relationships. Richard was most curious about how fear and shame impact relationships and how Gestalt work has the real potential to catalyze lasting change.

Richard confessed that he has had to overcome a traumatic upbringing. He is a self-described lifelong learner. Dennison is an expert in the phenomenological realization of shame, including how it affects trauma and recovery. Richard believes that Gestalt Therapy has many lasting benefits: “Through the process of awareness, the individuals gain an understanding of themselves and their environment. They recognize the potential for change and their capacity to make choices, so that they may live an authentic, and meaningful life.”

Overcoming Collective Trauma: Creating a Positive Space Within Yourself

Live from San Diego, It’s Jim & Rafael (together again)

People in every generation think they are the ones facing the greatest challenges of all time. Was the Holocaust, Civil War, Armenian Holocaust, Black Plague, Nagasaki and Hiroshima more traumatic than any of our current events? American sociologist Kai Erickson, author of “Everything in Its Path” and international teacher and scholar, Thomas Hubl, are both famous for coining the term “Collective Trauma.” They focus on the shared experience of the collective and why it matters. Trauma that impacts many of us on a collective level can lead to solutions on a global level. It can lead to collective empathy and alignment, e.g., how most of the world has united around Ukraine. Conversely, it can lead to a tsunami of dissociation, PTSD, Alexithymia, thought and emotional dysregulation, wars, factionalism, violence, and suicide.

Jim and Rafael discuss Rafael’s new office and Jim’s office envy. They also go deep by exploring contemporary trauma events on a massive scale, i.e. COVID, the war in Ukraine, the slap heard around the world at the Oscars, inflation, ecological disasters, and the fraying of our social fabric. Collective traumas impact individuals within societies and individuals between societies. It is affecting what therapists are seeing every day. There is a ripple effect. We cannot “unsee” the war in Ukraine on T.V. Just a couple of years ago we were collectively upset about cyber bullying, the lack of a workable vaccine, masks as a political issue versus a health issue, fake news, the election, cancel culture, hate speech on Twitter. Now we are wondering if Elon Musk will take over Twitter and the world and we are on our second booster shot. Now it seems like you cannot even watch an awards show - - without it slapping you hard across the face.

Yet, there is good news listeners. Rafael and Jim discuss how we can tap into our most vulnerable parts of ourselves and find our greater self. Yes, we can cultivate gratitude and kindness and still believe that good triumphs evil - - without seeming overly Pollyanna. We can learn to self and co-regulate. There is an opportunity for the collective (not just individuals) to become courageous, resilient, determined, and aware.

Contact as Awareness: The Discovery of the Unfolding Self
Rafael Cortina interviews the Gestalt Legend Jean-Marie Robine

Jean-Marie Robine is a legend in the world of Gestalt Therapy. He asks important philosophical questions. Does the now have a future? Is contact the source of all experience? What is the impact of conscious and non-conscious intentionality? What does Gestalt therapy teach us about the importance of “contact” and the “unfolding self?” Can you really start learning to play the drums in your 60’s?
Jean-Marie is much more than a renowned international trainer. He is an artisan, writer, lecturer, and scholar. In this Podcast, Jean-Marie discusses his passion for Gestalt therapy, art, writing, home design, and architecture. A consummate learner he picked up the drums in his 60’s and joked about how he was taking lessons with school aged children. And he felt right at home. He is the founder and past director of the Gestalt Therapy Institute (France), co-founder and past president of the European Association for Gestalt Therapy. To top it off, he has published eight books and numerous articles… and he still believes that “Social Change Begins with Two.”

Dr. Eric Raimo, M.D., the Bipolar Whisperer

Dr. Jim Bramson interviews Dr. Eric Raimo

Dr. Eric Raimo is an accomplished psychiatrist who specializes in the treatment of bipolar disorder. I refer to him as the “Bipolar Whisperer.” Dr. Raimo went to two Ivy’s (the University of Pennsylvania and Dartmouth College, Medical school) and went on to do his residency at the University of California - San Diego (UCSD) Medical School.

He has an outstanding reputation among colleagues and patients. People don’t just like him, they love him.

I learned about Dr. Raimo’s cutting-edge work with bipolar patients. Among other ways his treatment is unique, Dr. Raimo believes in treating the entire family system, not just the person with the diagnosis. Dr. Raimo has a great command of psychopharmacology, alternative therapeutic interventions, and evidenced-based research. He offers some helpful insights into how these modalities impact patients.

Dr. Eric takes the stigma out of the illness in this podcast. He cites many famous people who have lived successfully with the disorder. We are familiar with some of the them, including Winston Churchill, Brian WIlson, and Frank Sinatra. However, more recent luminaires have stepped forward to courageously share their experiences. Catherine Zeta-Jones said: “There is no need to suffer silently and there is no shame in seeking help.” Claude Van Damme waxed poetry: “All the commotion around me, all the water around me, moving left and right around me, became like a lake.” Russell Brand described his cycling depression and response to it: “And the image of myself as compromised and inconsistent made me want to withdraw from the world even further.”

We hope this podcast touches the known and unknown people with bipolar disorder who suffer in silence and feel unnecessarily stigmatized. We also hope to reach the hearts and minds of professionals who may want to treat this population.

The Art of Collaboration: Conflict Resolution for the 21st Century

Dr. Jim Bramson interviews the self-described “Resolutionary” Stewart Levine, Esq.

Stewart Levine is an attorney, poet, artist, concerned citizen, and thought leader in the field of conflict resolution. His earliest books, “Getting to Resolution” and “The Book of Agreement,” shaped the field of conflict resolution and collaborative law. Stewart’s model has been utilized by shrinks, mediators, corporate leaders, educators, lawyers, and peaceniks. Stewart has done it all and seen it all. He has consulted with the Harvard Law School, World Bank, Visa, Nvidia, and has even taught at the Esalen Institute - - where we first met.

Stewart is a living example of evolutionary consciousness. He cares about people and the planet we inhabit. Currently Stewart is offering a COVID safe on-line conflict resolution course via (ResolutionWorks.com). Stewart jokes that he is all about “Resolutionary” consciousness. He even sees his model as quite simpatico with Buddhist Psychology. Levine believes human beings need to resolve their conflict with the environment and become better planetary citizens. Otherwise, Earth will go on without us. Yes, there is a new book in the works about this subject and much more.

In Stewart’s last book, “Being The Best Lawyer You Can Be: A Guide to Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellness” he notes how attorneys are facing an alarming mental health, physical, and spiritual crisis. Lawyers have higher rates of depression, anxiety, and addiction compared to other professions. His book on the subject has been adopted by The American Bar Association and many law schools. As if that were not enough, Stewart is a prolific poet. He shares two of his stellar poems with us before he drops the mic and exits the podcast studio. I call him my Amanda Gorman.

Dr. Jim Bramson Interviews Dr. Marty Klein

Dr. Marty Klein has appeared on Oprah and Dr. Phil sharing his expertise on sex. He covers many topics in this podcast, including pornography (His Porn, Her Pain), the U.S’s war on sex, cultural differences in sexual expression and repression, how men and women are more alike than different, parenting non-binary or LBGTQIA children. Going beyond knowing which pronoun to use.

Dr. Klein is smart, witty, and pragmatic. He breaks down what we should all know about sex, but are afraid to ask. After listening to this podcast, you may want to purchase one of his books listed below or subscribe to his news letter, You Tube channel, or —if you are lucky enough to get an appointment— work with Marty. Dr. Klein trains clinicians at major conferences throughout the world, has a travel log, and plays music in his spare time.

Jim coaxed Marty into training EBMC clinicians. He is teaching his staff couples therapy and sex therapy. Dr. Klein has participated in Drinks with Shrinks events and other WCMI activities as part of Jim’s networking group for professionals. In fact, Dr. Klein will be doing a course for WCMI, focused on helping parents. He will cover many contemporary topics, including how to connect with your non-binary teen.

Marty is an original thinker. He demystifies many of our assumptions about human sexuality. He also knows what will help most of us experience greater intimacy with our partners. Dr. Klein has helped many couples experience greater sexual gratification by learning how to communicate better with one another. Dr. Klein explains some of his methods and techniques in this podcast. You are in for a treat.

The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat: Zen & the Art of Being an Emotionally Regulated Football Fan

Jim & Rafael Rap about Football & Mastering the Inner Game.

In this podcast, Rafael and Jim tackle football, male depression, fanaticism, fatherhood, and evolutionary consciousness. Rafael and Jim explore why football fans feel so downtrodden when their team loses. They ponder why we even watch football in the first place. After all, football is a violent game that can result in concussions, broken ribs, torn ACLs, or worse. Yet this game is incredibly fun to watch for many people, including Jim & Rafael. It is a guilty pleasure. It gives men a chance to bond and to be emotionally demonstrative around other men.

Jim has worked with professional athletes to help them improve performance and heal from head injuries. However, that work has not prepared him to handle his Lions losing all the time. In this podcast, both Rafael and Jim share their thoughts about managing disappointment and learning to take the wins and losses in stride. Rafael reveals how his value is no longer attached to the final score. He bounces back more quickly than he used to and explains how and why.

There is value in learning that our value is not tied to our team’s performance, or anyone else’s. We all must learn to be more zen when the people we really root for let us down, or we let them down.

If you are a Detroit Lions fan, there is little we can offer you in this podcast. We just want to say we are sorry you have suffered since 1958 - - and the curse of Bobby Lane will end some day. If you are a 49ers fan, you have mostly good karma coming your way (fun while it lasted) and you should absolutely listen to this entire podcast.

Journey From Darkness: Becoming David Hartman, M.D. with Dr. James Bramson, PsyD.
This podcast chronicles psychiatrist Dr. David Hartman’s “Journey from Darkness.” Dr. Hartman teaches us that, when the mind clears, the eyes can see — and dreams can be fully realized. In this podcast, Dr. Hartman, with his sharp wit and folksy charm, shares his extraordinary story about becoming the first blind person to graduate from medical school. In the movie that chronicles his life, “Journey from Darkness, ” and in his book “White Coat, White Cane,” the world learned how Dr. Hartman defied the odds through his determination and grit, and the loving support of his parents and community. Dr. Hartman opines that “all of us are handicapped in some way.” And he advises that is up to each of us to discover our handicaps (or obstacles) and not let them thwart our dreams or our potential.

Dr. Hartman also discusses his critical and cutting-edge work with opioid addicts and addiction generally. His wife, Cheri, who is an accomplished psychologist and community leader in her own right, is his muse at work and at home. (Or did he say boss?) Theirs is a love story for the ages. This podcast will inspire anyone who wants to overcome great odds to live out their dream.

Citizen Josh (Kornbluth): Film Maker, Mono-linguist, Oboe Player, Red Diaper Baby, and Jungian Psychotherapy Client

Josh Kornbluth is a mono-linguist, film maker, humorist, theatre performer, and activist who was raised by Stalinist parents Bunny and Paul in NYC. Josh admits that his oboe- playing likely helped more than his athletic prowess in landing him a scholarship at Princeton.

A self-described “Red Diaper Baby,” his indoctrination into communism by left-leaning Jewish parents inspired a one-man show and featured film. In this podcast, Josh talks about his film “Haiku Tunnel” and the fanfare around the announcement that the film had made it into Sundance Film Festival (they forgot to call him). Josh jokes about his wife’s anxiety about left turns and neglecting taxes, and how he dedicated a play and movie to her called “Love and Taxes.” Josh explores a doorway metaphor, and its relevance to caring for his mom who suffers from Alzheimer’s and his stint as an “artist in residence” at a hospice, The Zen Hospice Project.

Because this is ShrinksRap Josh opened up about his connection to psychotherapy, including his feelings of guilt that his long-term Jungian analyst likely retired because of him, and his confusion even today over what Jungian Psychotherapy actually is.

He studied acupuncture, chiropractic medicine, somatic psychology, and reluctantly, psychotherapy. Today he is the master of his craft, a certified Gestalt and Hakomi therapist, and the shrinks’ shrink. Anxious Achievers: Rocking the Workplace - Susan Bernstein, Ph.D./Executive Coach with James Bramson, Psy D.

In this episode, Dr. Jim discusses the topic of elite achievement with his old friend and esteemed colleague, Dr. Susan Bernstein. Dr. Bernstein uses her wit and personal stories to illustrate how Anxious Achievers can optimize their experience and contribution. On the one hand, they are conscientious, needing to prove themselves, perfectionistic, and aiming to please others. This mix of qualities often yields good —if not great —outcomes in the workplace. Yet, Anxious Achievers need to learn how to dial it back, to prevent burning out, getting caught up in people pleasing, overworking, and being dispirited. Dr. Bernstein has made a huge impact as a thought leader, business coach, consultant, and somatic healer. She holds an M.B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley and a doctorate in Psychology. She has honed her craft at FranklinCovy, Intel, Accenture, and select startup companies in the Bay Area and beyond. She is also a champion of the human potential movement in the workplace - - and has taught at Esalen. A sought-after trainer, listen to how Dr. Bernstein coaches Anxious Achievers . . . and makes her old pal Dr. Jim laugh. Why? Because maybe he is one of them.

A Working Man's Shrink Plays the Blues - Bob Larsen, M.D. with James Bramson, Psy D

Tales of Victims & Victors

Dr. Jim and Dr. Bob discuss the forgotten victims and victors in the labor force. These tales of real workers offer insight into the human response to serious tragedy and challenge. See what can be learned, whether you are a clinician or someone otherwise interested in human behavior, from this preeminent psychiatrist who considers himself to be a “working person’s shrink.” In this podcast, Dr. Bob also dazzles us with his blues harp and plays his redemption songs.

Dr. Bob Larsen is a working-class kid who grew up to become a ‘working man’s shrink’. He has more degrees than a thermometer. Forsaking a career in molecular and cellular biology, Dr. Bob opted to attend medical school at Northwestern University where he was smitten by the field of psychiatry, never having taken a course in psychology. He then bypassed his alma mater in Colorado to complete a residency at UCSF, a Robert Wood Johnson fellowship at Stanford/UCSF, and an MPH at Cal. His expertise in the fields of occupational & forensic psychiatry have been taught in his role as a Clinical Professor at UCSF School of Medicine (volunteer faculty, 1984-2017).

Dr. Bob served on the Industrial Medical Council for its entire thirteen-year existence. He has done yeoman’s work for impaired physicians, seriously injured workers, and all who confront stodgy bureaucrats in our health care system. He’s a member of the American College of Psychiatrists and the Group for the Advancement of Psychiatry. Not a blind advocate, yet hopefully a man of the people.
