Reuters: The UK is about to join the CPTPP, a trade deal of 11 Asia-Pacific countries, like Australia, Canada and Japan. China and the Taiwan region have both applied for its membership. With the UK government currently describing China as a challenge, would China be concerned that the UK’s accession to the CPTPP would help Taiwan’s accession?
Mao Ning: China is a staunch advocate for trade liberalization and facilitation and an important participant in regional cooperation and economic integration in the Asia-Pacific. The CPTPP is an important free trade agreement in the region. In September 2021, China officially applied to join the CPTPP. We are in contact, communication and consultation with all CPTPP members. Joining the CPTPP will help us further deepen reform in China and open up wider to the world. It will also give CPTPP members more access to the Chinese market and expand their economic and trade cooperation with China.
As to the Taiwan region’s accession to the CPTPP, our position is very clear. There is only one China in the world, and the Taiwan region is an inalienable part of China. The one-China principle is a universally recognized norm in international relations and a prevailing consensus among the international community. We firmly oppose any official interaction between countries and the Taiwan region and firmly oppose the Taiwan region’s accession to any agreement or organization of official nature.
