Wonka is a pretty silly idea, with the film having been the subject of tons of online jokes and criticism. A prequel about a character who is left intentionally mysterious in the original film seems like a really bad idea, as it could retroactively hurt the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Despite the problems with the premise, it isn't smart to bet against Wonka, as the film has a surprising amount of promise.
The involvement of talent like Paul King and Timothée Chalamet shows that something about Wonka has a lot of draw for these film superstars, and hopefully, they can elevate the material even more. The film could also be a big box office success, as it releases in December, the perfect time for a Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory revival. While it is possible that Wonka could fail, it seems incredibly unlikely, with Wonka hopefully being as beloved as Paul King's Paddington 2.
