Raising Sinners
It all started in 2016 with Lisa Clark’s book, “Raising Sinners,” but she knew there was more to say. The Raising Sinners podcast tackles all the topics and questions parents have about raising their kids! Lisa and her co-host Chrissie Dunham, and the occasional special guest, cover it all: sibling rivalry, dating, and social media, but also discuss raising children who don’t fit the mold and even that pesky “mama guilt.” While sin can be fun in the moment, it’s never funny. Lisa and Chrissie walk this line well, finding light and laughter though the difficulties of parenting, but always having pointed, relatable, and reverent discussions that focus on God’s word and what the “manual” has to say about our parenting. Lisa and Chrissie have been podcasting together since 2018 through their other show, The Wonder Podcast. You can connect with them on Instagram @talkwithchrissieandlisa. Christmas, The Story that Never Gets Old

It’s the MOST WONDERFUL time of the year!!! It’s Christmastime! And we’re celebrating hard over here at Raising Sinners!

The story of Jesus’ birth seems to come alive every year at this time as parents, grandparents, friends, and family tell the story from Luke chapter 2. Every time we open God’s word to read the account, it seems like it refreshes itself and becomes anew. That’s the truth of God’s word, isn’t it? It’s always fresh and comes alive. And the Christmas story is no different.

By gathering to tell the story, you’re giving Jesus a seat at your table. You’re inviting Him into your celebration and making much of Him, the Guest of honor. As we tell the story, we’re being faithful to the generations behind us who are depending on us to repeat and repeat the message of Christ’s birth to redeem mankind. Oh, what a story! Oh, what a Savior!

We wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and a VERY Happy 2024!

As always, thanks for listening! We appreciate you!

Make this a December to Remember

December is here and we are excited over here at the Raising Sinners Podcast! We celebrate BIG!!! On this episode you’ll hear us share some favorite memories of days gone by, traditions we began with our own children and fun things we continue to do with our grands.

For the Christian parent, the month of December is full of opportunities to point our children and community to Christ. So, we want to be intentional and prepared! Feeling wheels off already? Too many obligations? Take a breath. Refocus. Pull out your Bible and start drawing near to Jesus.

So often we forget the guest of honor! Remember who this month is all about in the first place! It’s Jesus! Whisper His name. Invite Him in. Leave space at your table. And celebrate big! The Savior has come!

Thanks for joining us for this episode of RAISING SINNERS!

Your Son Can Trust God, Answering the What-Ifs with Katy Boatman

Today our guest, Katy Boatman, chats with us about her new devotional for boys, “You Can Trust.” We were fascinated listening to Katy discuss how she landed on this writing project. (You’ll have to listen to find out…☺)

Preteen boys have a lot of thoughts spinning through their curious minds each day. But too often, their “what-if” questions are rooted in fear and anxiety as they try to find their way in a world that doesn’t always make sense. This easy-to-read devotional by Katy Boatman offers daily encouragement and truths to combat that worry. Each of the 100 devotions, plus interactive activity days, (which sound super fun!) rallies boys to trust the God who has all the answers. They’ll explore questions such as:

What if I don’t feel strong enough?

What if I’m scared?

What if my team loses?

What if God changes His mind about me?

“You Can Trust” offers boys tangible reminders that they can trust God with all their what-ifs and questions in life.

Katy lives in Nashville, is passionate about mentoring the next generation and authored a devotional book, “You Can Rest,” for girls which was a finalist in the category of “Young People’s Literature for the ECPA’S 2023 CHRISTIAN BOOK AWARD. “Check it out, too!

Resources to help your children grow in their faith with Steph Thurling

Today we are doing things a little different! Lisa recently joined Steph Thurling, the Executive Director of Christian Parenting, on her podcast THE CHRISTIAN PARENTING PODCAST to share her heart for resources for kids to grow their faith and her new devotional MY TIME WITH GOD written with her friends from our partner ministry, First15.

In a recent survey done by Christian Parenting and First15, parents gave an overwhelming response requesting tools for their kiddos. And MY TIME WITH GOD was born!

MY TIME WITH GOD is a devltional written for children ages 6-12 to help encourage and equip them to establish a lifetime of learning and walking with God thorugh daily scripture reading and reflection.

Over the course of 20 days, MY TIME WITH GOD will guide your kids (or grandkids!) thorugh some of the basic principles of the Christian faith like, why do I spend time with God? What is prayer? Who is the Holy Spirit? And so much more!

Go to ChristianParenting.org for more info and to purchase your copy of MY TIME WITH GOD!

Navigating the Teenage Dating Years with James McKinney

We cannot contain our excitement for you to hear this conversation. James Mckinney joins us this episode to talk about his new (and first!) book, Navigating the Teenage Dating Years. We all have thoughts about our own dating paths, and for the most part, don’t want to replicate those with our own kids. ☺ So, what to do? Go with the culture? Do what everyone else is doing? Tell them to wait until they turn 16 and turn them loose?

James Mckinney is a father of two teenagers and husband of twenty-three years to his wife, Melissa. He holds a Masters degree in Theological Studies from Liberty University and serves as the Minister of Adults at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Prosper, TX. His passion is to see marriages flourish and families walk in the reality and truth of God’s word.

This book covers biblical principles for dating! What? The Bible says something about dating? The Bible says something about every aspect of our life and gives us principles to live by. When we read and study His word, we can apply these godly principles to our lives. And dating is NO exception! You’ll gain so much insight into the what’s, when’s and how’s of dating as you read and ponder James’ wisdom on this teen rite of passage.

OVERCOMING DESTRUCTIVE ANGER IN PARENTING WITH NATALIE HIXSON

Anger in parenting is common. We get frustrated with ourselves, our kids, and we lose it sometimes…a lot of times. And then the cycle of remorse, regret, guilt kicks in. We’ve all been there.

Natalie Hixson is our guest today to tackle this hard and sensitive subject. And she does it with humility and vulnerability. Natalie is a wife, mother, auntie, and certified professional life coach who helps discouraged Christian moms overcome destructive anger and burnout. After learning to thrive in motherhood and process anger in a healthy way, Natalie became convicted to help other moms avoid those dark years of motherhood by helping them to appreciate and process their anger, learn to identify their triggers, and ultimately control their reaction to those triggering situations.

FREE OFFER: Natalie has offered our audience access to her TRIGGER TRACKER as a first step to overcoming destructive anger, helping moms to be the fun, present and joyful wives, and moms they want to be. The TRIGGER TRACKER will help identify triggers, create awareness, and support moms in changing their mindset around the triggers.

PARENTING AWAY FROM PERFORMANCE W CHRIS SASSER (Learning how to lead our kids, without crushing them)

Chris Sasser joins us today. We’ve had Chris on before and he’s extremely wise and helpful in discussing real life topics, like performance and how to parent against the mentality of EVERYTIHNG IS A PERFORMANCE! We’re our kids’ parents, not their agents. ☺

Chris is the pastor of family ministries at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC and author of the book, “Bags.” (If you haven’t read this book…read it!)

There is a ton of pressure in a child’s life to perform in the classroom, on the field and at home. Chris shares 3 practical thoughts for parents to consider in parenting them to know their identity is in Jesus Christ and not in what they do.

“We must redefine what success looks like in our family.”

He encourages parents to view the Ted xTalk, “Change the Game Project” by John O’Sullivan.

Answering Hard Questions – Sleepovers – Part 2 w Caitlin Fechner

UPDATE: Hopefully you’ve listened to part 1 of this discussion with our friend, Caitlin Fechner. We’d highly recommend you listen to part 1 before diving in with us for part 2.

We surveyed parents a few months ago about where they stood with regards to allowing (or not allowing) sleepovers for their kids. The reviews were heavy on the “no way” or “family only” but there were quite a few parents landing on “yes, they’re fun and such a great childhood memory!” And they are and were!

In the internet age, information is coming at us at lightning speed. So, we know more. In real time. What do we do with that knowledge? Should it affect our parenting?

Our friend, Caitlin Fechner, joins us for this 2-part series. Caitlin has a BA in Psychology from the University of Texas at Austin and a MS in counseling from SMU. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, currently employed as a therapist with Dallas ISD. She’s married to Michael, and they have two sons, Trey and Milo. We had so much to talk about that we decided to devote 2 episodes to this topic. This discussion is hard and real. Sleepovers in the 1970s consisted mostly of junk food, music, and a game or two of “straight as a board, light as a feather!” (iykyk) ☺

Sleepovers in the 2020s can look a lot different. As always, you’re the parent and will make decisions for your family that reflect your family values and parenting style. We’re all doing the best we can most days, and that’s the truth. Hopefully this episode will give you something to think about and consider as you make decisions for your family.

It’s Summer! Time to re-PLAY! Change is Hard with Debbie Stephens

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isn’t it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. That’s exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). Today we’re talking CHANGE. Join us for our final RE-PLAY this summer as we discuss seasons of change with our friend Debbie Stephens. Stay cool! Lisa and Chrissie

Change is inevitable. But all at one time? New city. New church. New friends. New schools. New home. New dog (hey Moose!)

The Stephens family has experienced lots of change in the couple of years and we wanted to check in with the queen of the household herself, Mrs. Debbie Stephens! Wife, mom, speaker, teacher and funny girl, Debbie shares from her heart how they’ve navigated their new normal.

Debbie is married to Jarrett Stephens, senior pastor of Champion Forest Baptist Church in Northwest Houston, Texas. They have 4 daughters and 2 dogs. (Fun fact: both Jarrett and Debbie have been guests on The Wonder Podcast! ☺)

“Obedience is costly but so worth it.” Debbie Stephens

In obedience, the Stephens family left their life in the Dallas area and embarked on a new journey, but it wasn’t easy.

Teaching our children to be flexible is difficult on many levels because most find their security in routines and consistency. Change is hard. But the Stephens family has done it with grace and come out on the other side shining bright! Listen in to Debbie’s tips on communicating change with your kids and giving space to grieving, new schedules and making choices.

It’s Summer! Time to re-PLAY! PRAISE HIM! with Lauren Chandler

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isn’t it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. That’s exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). This week Lauren Chandler will be joining us (again ☺) to talk about her book, PRAISE HIM! We absolutely LOVED our visit with Lauren. Grab a coffee and enjoy this convo amongst friends. Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie

Chatting with Lauren Chandler was truly like catching up with an old friend. She is DE-LIGHTFUL!!! Lauren is an avid writer, a worship leader at her home church, The Village Church, in Flower Mound, Texas where she and her husband, Matt, have served for almost 20 years, and mom to her 3 children. Lauren is also a Bird Lady! That’s right! She watches birds, feeds birds, and even has an app on her phone telling her what kind of bird is perched on her windowsill at any given moment…she’s legit! We just love her!

And she has a sincere and pure heart for worship. When her kids were younger, she wrote a song to help them in the highs and lows of life. That song, became PRAISE HIM!, her new children’s book out NOW. Lauren’s lyrical lines are accompanied by whimsical illustrations and encourage children that no matter day or night, wherever they go, they can praise God continually.

From page to page, readers will follow a child through her day as she goes from sunny morning to stormy afternoon and then a shadowy night. Parents can utilize this book as a great resource to remind their children that God is always there with us, even when days are hard, and that only simple words are needed to praise Him.

Go to LaurenChandler.com to read more about Lauren, and her newest book, PRAISEHIM! It’s available everywhere books are sold.

Connect with Lauren on Instagram @laurenchandler

We hope you enjoy our conversation with Lauren. She’s the real deal. Her heart for Christ and worship encouraged our hearts in many ways. As always, thanks for listening! We are thankful for you! Lisa and Chrissie

It’s Summer! Let’s re-Play! MOM SQUAD - Making Friends in a Virtual World w AMY PIERSON

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isn’t it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. That’s exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). This week, we’ll be talking FRIENDS with our friend, and mom squad member, AMY PIERSON! Don’t overthink making friends – for yourself or your kids! Enjoy! And Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie

Friends. Whether you are 8 or 58, making friends can be tricky. Especially today when we are living in a false reality world called “social” media. We have more “friends” than ever, but are experiencing depression, loneliness, and isolation more than ever, too.

Amy Pierson, mom to Eva, Isaac, and Benjamin, shares her personal experiences as a new mom in a big city, and how she helps her children navigate friendship.

“Why don’t we invite someone?” These are Amy’s connection words. Going to the park? Invite someone! Going to eat dinner after a game? Invite someone! Taking a class at the gym? Invite someone! We’re all looking for an invitation. A simple invitation connects two people. It’s not hard to do, but why don’t we do it? Fear. We talk about it.

“You have to want friendship more than you fear not having it.”

We also discuss modeling friendship, being proactive and “helping” younger children learn how to be a friend. Thanks Amy! As always, we LOVE having Amy on our show. If you haven’t listened to THE WONDER PODCAST, check it out! Amy has been a frequent guest and friend. She’s full of godly wisdom. Thank you for listening! We appreciate you!

It’s Summer! Let’s re-PLAY!!! Experiencing God with Richard Blackaby

SUMMER is a great time to play catch, isn’t it? We can take a breath and enjoy life at a slower pace. That’s exactly what we plan to do over the next few weeks! The Raising Sinners Podcast will be re-playing some of our favorite episodes (and yours!). First up…EXPERIENCING GOD WITH RICHARD BLACKABY! Dr. Blackaby was just incredible to talk to. He made us feel so at ease and we loved his stories of growing up in the Blackaby household. Enjoy and Happy Summer! Lisa and Chrissie

We have to admit it…WE ARE BIG EXPERIENCING GOD FANS!!! Dr. Henry Blackaby wrote the study 33 years ago, we have completed the study countless times over the years, and it has shaped us, encouraged us, challenged us and strengthened us! So, we were a little starstruck when Dr. Richard Blackaby joined us for this interview.

Dr. Richard Blackaby, Henry’s son and ministry partner is the General Editor of the completely revised, Christian Standard Bible (CSB) Translation of the Experiencing God Bible. Just released, it features unique design elements and study helps including sections throughout the Bible asking, as only Henry Blackaby can do, “Did you notice?” We so often read God’s word in a hurry and miss so much truth and detail. This Bible will help us think, study, and absorb what God would have for us each day. And experience Him in His word.

We talk a lot about the study that changed us in this episode. But we also ask our guest some parenting questions. One of our favorite quotes, “There aren’t enough rules to make your kids love Jesus. So be so fun and full of joy that they can’t possibly NOT want to follow Christ!” AMEN!!!! As Chrissie likes to say, “THE PARTY DON’T STOP!”

We were honored Dr. Blackaby joined us, and we hope you enjoy this episode of Raising Sinners as much as we did!

A Family on Mission with Rebecca Rapp-Salas

Teaching our children to be selfless and think of others first is a big parenting goal always looming in the backs of our minds, but seriously, it’s hard in the day-to-day moments of life to really instill this into our children’s minds and hearts. Our society says worry about yourself! Focus on yourself! Take care of yourself! ME ME ME!

But the scripture is clear, “So he answered and said, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Luke 10:27

Love God. Love others. That’s our marching orders.

Our friend Rebecca Rapp-Salas joins us again to talk about raising children who are Kingdom minded and have a heart for serving others. Rebecca grew up on the mission field and met her husband on the mission field. The Salas’ love Jesus and have devoted their lives to loving Him and others. This was an easy conversation. Rebecca and her husband David are raising their daughters Amelie and Toni to live out Luke 10:27. They serve others well. Rebecca gives us ideas, thoughts, and intentional ways we can raise children to think of others first and desire to serve them.

We don’t have to teach our children to focus on their own needs. That comes with skin. ☺ We must teach our children to see those in front of us whom God created that need our love, impact, friendship, and possibly our food, clothes, money and Jesus.

A Simple Summer with Rebecca Rapp-Salas

It’s May and summer is quickly approaching. We thought it would be fun to take a minute, and a breath, and dream about having a simple summer.

Our friend Rebecca Rapp-Salas joins us and shares how her family keeps it simple. It’s funny but keeping is simple takes planning, intentionality, and grit. Keeping it simple isn’t that simple after all! ☺

What is a simple summer? It’s recognizing the daily gifts of time, rest, and meals together that the school year typically doesn’t afford us. It’s fireflies at night, walks in the neighborhood, an overnight camping trip, visiting grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, VBS, and summer camp. It’s lists of fun activities like smores over a fire, scavenger hunts through the park, adventures in the kitchen, service projects and late-night talks.

So many of us look up in August and wonder, “where did summer go?” Is this because we looked forward to that grandiose trip the whole summer and forfeit the daily blessings of a simple, regular day? We want you to think ahead and plan for a simple summer. Thank you, Rebecca, for spurring us on to do just that.

THRIVING BEYOND BELIEF WITH CHERYL SCRUGGS

Our longtime friend Cheryl Scruggs joins us today to talk marriage, parenting and THRIVING!

Cheryl and her husband, Jeff, are biblical counselors and founders of Hope Matters Marriage Ministry. Their book, “I Do Again” chronicles their story of marriage, divorce, and remarriage. They are passionate about seeing marriages changed, made whole and reconciled to God’s plan. Cheryl and Jeff have two grown daughters and 3 grandchildren.

Our discussion on this episode centers around how women can thrive in good times, hard times and everything in between. In other words, we talk about thriving in LIFE. “Abundant life isn’t perfect circumstances, it’s perfect peace within those circumstances.”

In her new book, “Thriving Beyond Belief - Courageous, Rooted, Thriving Women,” Cheryl provides practical tools to improve every relationship, tools to know the real you, and tips on becoming more vulnerable.

“It’s important to remember thriving doesn’t mean happy. You can thrive in every season of life, even when you’re not necessarily happy.”

Cheryl’s book is available everywhere you get your books! She also hosts a podcast of the same name. ☺ Connect with Cheryl @cherylscruggs and @thrivingbeyondbeliefbook. You can also learn more about their ministry by going to www.jeffandcherylscruggs.com.

Why is “Good Friday” good? with Susie Hawkins

It’s Holy Week and our favorite week to talk with our friend, and resident theologian ☺, Susie Hawkins. She co-authored the book, “Passover for Christians” and helps us understand how to “enter the story” as Believers in Christ during this week of remembrance and celebration.

This weekend is the most momentous weekend in the history of the world. As Christians, we commemorate Jesus’ death during HOLY WEEK. Christians only have 2 main holidays, Christmas and Easter, so it’s very important to our faith to honor these days and know why we celebrate.

Helping our children understand Easter can be hard when we’re discussing death and hard topics like crucifixion. Most likely you’ve been asked, “Why is it called GOOD FRIDAY if Jesus died on that day?” Susie helps us understand the roots of “Good Friday” and offers ideas for allowing our children some space to be sad.

And you’ll love all her ideas on making the story come alive at home through the Bible and activities to do as a family.

Susie has written a devotional series for YOUVERSION Bible app called, “The Final Week of Jesus’ Life.” Subscribe today and be encouraged as you walk through Holy Week and the Scripture. Thank you for joining us, Susie!

MOM SQUAD – The School Dilemma w Mandy Hayes

Public? Private? Homeschool? What is a parent to do?

Mandy Hayes from THE MOM SQUAD joins us today. Mom to 3 daughters, she and her husband Marcus live in the Houston area, are in ministry and are treating this decision as a yearly one. Because they are in ministry, Marcus is lead pastor of Crossroads Baptist Church in The Woodlands, TX, they have lived in several places, and they’ve chosen schooling for their daughters that have best suited them at that time and place.

Mandy taught in the Chicago public school system for many years. Her daughters are in a hybrid, Christian school program now. She has also homeschooled them in prior years. So, her experience with each option is vast. And she’s passionate about it.

The thing we need to remember is that God is in it all. As Believers, wherever we go, God goes. So, we should not fear these decisions. We pray, trust, and go.

Mandy is the author of, “Promise Me You’ll Always be 3!” She has previously been a guest on The Wonder Podcast. Thank you for joining us, Mandy!

Teaching Truth in a False World w Elizabeth Urbanowicz

Our guest today is Elizabeth Urbanowicz. Elizabeth is a follower of Jesus Christ who is passionate about equipping kids to understand the truth of the Christian worldview.

She holds a B.S. from Gordon College in Elementary Education and Spanish, an M.S.Ed. from Northern Illinois University in Literacy Education, and an M.A. in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. Elizabeth began her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school.

She began her professional career as an elementary teacher in a Christian school. Several years into her teaching experience, Elizabeth realized that despite being raised in Christian homes, attending a Christian school, and being active in church, her students thought more like the culture than like Christ. Elizabeth began searching for curricular materials that would equip her students to think critically, helping them discover that Christianity is the worldview that lines up with reality. After not finding any materials that met this need, she began creating a curriculum for her students.

Elizabeth first taught Foundation Comparative Worldview Curriculum as an after-school class for third through fifth graders, and the results were incredible! Students were transformed from passive recipients of information to active evaluators of every message they receive. Parents and teachers alike noticed the impact these materials had on students’ media consumption, academic achievement, and everyday habits. This transformation lasted beyond the elementary years and guided students’ thinking in junior high and beyond.

Elizabeth now works full-time on developing comparative worldview and apologetics resources for children. Her goal is to prepare the next generation to be lifelong critical thinkers and, most importantly, lifelong disciples of Jesus Christ.

We thoroughly enjoyed our conversation with Elizabeth, and hope you’ll be encouraged by her drive and passion to help parents teach their children to think critically with a Biblical perspective. Today more than ever we need this.

MOM SQUAD – How Old is Too Young? CELL PHONES w Becky Leach

How old it too young for a cell phone? That’s the question we’re asking today, and we’re joined by Becky Leach, Mom Squad member, and mom to Brady, Charlotte, and Landry, 14, 12, and 8. Becky shares their experiences, guidelines, contracts, rules, and all the things! It’s a lot y’all. As you know, this is a loaded topic and HOT BUTTON, but we talk about it anyway! Cell phones aren’t going anywhere.

The decision to give your child a cell phone is usually a hard one. Why? Because you’re not giving them a landline connected to a wall in the hub of your home. You’re giving them a computer that talks, texts, and does research and they can take it wherever they go. Therein lies the problem and struggle. So, figuring out how cell phones fit into your family is what each family must decide and we as parents need to stay in our lane and make decisions that might not look like our neighbors. (Too much opinion? Oops!)

“We must trust our kids enough to let them fail. Then teach them how to rebound and get it right the next time.”

This was a good, thought-provoking conversation including a discussion about knowing in our gut whether our child is ready for a cell phone. In fact, a hard fast rule on age might not work because one child at 13 is different than another child at 13.

Thank you for joining us, Becky! We appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. xo

Thank you for listening! We appreciate you!

MOM SQUAD - Making Friends in a Virtual World w AMY PIERSON

YOU COME FROM GREATNESS with Sara Chinakwe

We had such a great conversation with Sara Chinakwe talking about her new (and first!) book, You Come from Greatness!

Sara is a wife, mom, teacher, ministry leader and author. Sara loves to encourage women and children to pursue God’s purpose and embrace their God-given identity. This calling led her to write her first book and share stories of men and women whom God has used to impact our world for good.

In You Come from Greatness, Sara has crafted a love letter to Black children that empowers them to know their God-give worth by pointing to those who came before them. The story follows a young boy from the moment of his birth through his childhood, as his father details the history of their ancestry through the impact of a wide range of legacy leaders – including brilliant storytellers like May Angelou and prominent preachers like Desmond Tutu. As the story follows their footsteps of greatness, the child learns that he, too, has the power to change the world by embracing exactly who God wants him to be.

Vibrantly illustrated by Ken Daley, this poignant retelling of Black history is ideal for children ages 3-7 and adults who want to celebrate black culture. After reading You Come from Greatness, young readers of all races and ethnicities will feel encouraged to make the world a brighter, better place.

The Mom Squad w Liz Steckel, New Year, New Rhythms

Happy 2023!!! We made it!!!

We’re hitting the ground running into 2023 with a slate of fun, interesting, important episodes for parents of all ages and stages! We hope you’ll join every other week as we share new episodes of RAISING SINNERS. Our prayer, as a team, is that we encourage, share hope and provide community for parents who love Jesus, want to draw closer to Him, and raise kids to follow Him all their lives.

In this episode of THE MOM SQUAD, we’re joined by mom, Liz Steckel. She’s a wife, mom, and co-worker. She wears all the hats and admits she likes to GO. So, waiting, listening, sitting are her struggle. She shared with us 5 “rhythms” her family lives out in order to enable them to reach the goals God has placed on their hearts.

We loved when Liz shared each day she strives to “speak life” over her husband and daughters. With so much negativity and hate in the world, making your home a refuge of truth and life is a goal we can all work towards.

She also shared sage wisdom she received early on in her parenting, “…your children don’t belong to you, they’re entrusted to you.” A. MEN. Our kids are God’s.

We also share practical “goal setting” ideas that worked (or didn’t work ☺) in our families, and how God truly does want us to have a vision.

Again, HAPPY 2023, and as always, thanks for listening! We appreciate you!

We wish you and yours a blessed Christmas and a VERY Happy 2023!

Change is Hard with Debbie Stephens

Godly Dating 101 w Safa and Tovares Grey

How to be a good Christian spouse: the answers are all over the Bible. But dating? And, especially dating as a Christian in an overtly sexual world? The Bible isn’t as clear about this topic…or is it? Is there a way to date and bring glory to God? How does a Christian date in an overtly sexual world? With more than three million followers across their online ministry Godly Dating 101’s social media accounts, top podcast hosts (3.5 million downloads) and husband-&-wife team Tovares and Safa Grey are leaders in today’s Christian dating culture. PRAISE HIM! with Lauren Chandler

Experiencing God with Richard Blackaby

Mean girls and Bullies

Mean Girls isn’t just a movie. We’ve all been in situations where we’ve been bullied, treated unfairly, ridiculed, not invited, uninvited, accused, laughed at…It’s real life. Mean girls and bullies don’t go away in 7th grade. They follow us into adulthood unfortunately, so figuring out how to move forward and adjust is just as important as how to react in the moment.

In this episode, we share personal experiences, (some more recent than others!) and remind ourselves, once again, of the main thing. We can’t control mean girls, bullies, or anyone/anything else negative entering our world, but we can control how we react and move forward.

The Mom Squad with Abbie Tracy

It’s time for the MOM SQUAD again! Chrissie’s youngest daughter, Abbie Tracy joins us today to talk COMPARISON. It’s a topic we can all identify with. We asked a group of moms recently what they struggle with regarding comparison and here are a few of their answers:

Body image, parenting, age, career, mom guilt, biblical insight and knowledge, finances, spouse, home, friends, materialism, families, in-laws, eloquent speech, relationships, kids and kids’ achievements, ministry opportunities and gifting, Christian community, and generational families with spiritual influence.

Whew! That’s quite a list. Any of those resonate with you?  It’s a thing. Comparison is a thing. You might have heard before that the anecdote to comparison is contentment. So how can we be content? Mary and Martha gave us a beautiful picture of the Christian life. 1) Sit at His feet, and 2) Serve. Those two things bring contentment.

Thank you, Abbie, for joining us and sharing how comparison can creep into your family as you raise your 8- and 4-year-old. And how you stay in your lane despite where everyone else is going! #goodword

Parent2Parent – 2nd Edition

We’re excited to share with you the 2nd Edition of Parent2Parent!

When we asked parents for their one piece of advice, they were passionate and eager to share. We compiled their nuggets of wisdom ad decided to drill down on some of the main points parents saw as priorities in parenting.

In this second edition of Parent2Parent, we talk about the hard yards of parenting, the toddler years and how a gentle, contrite spirit brings about calmness. Funny, isn’t there a scripture about that?

We also talk about regrets we had in our parenting, phones and then we were cut off with technical issues. Ugh! It was really good though, trust us! 

So much of parenting is daily learning, finding joy in the journey and depending on your community. Don’t parent alone.

Raising Confident Daughters with Terra Mattson

Some days podcasting is easy and today was one of those days. Terra Mattson joined us for this episode, and she is so easy to talk to, so knowledgeable and just REAL! She’s raising two daughters, we’ve raised two daughters each, so we were all on the same page! And that was good because our subject was GIRLS! Terra is a spokesperson for Christian Parenting so maybe you’ve seen her videos on your feed! She and her hubby, Jeff, live in Oregon and have a ministry called Living Wholehearted. It’s a professional counseling and organizational development firm. They co-host an advice column called Dear Mattsons, and a podcast, Living Wholehearted, on the Christian Parenting Network.

Terra was spot on as she shared what young girls are up against today. Whether it’s gender identity, branding, over-sexualization, anxiety, rape culture, social media - our girls need to be grounded and confident in who they are and Whose they are.

She’s written a course for moms and daughters called, RAISE CONFIDENT DAUGHTERS. This resource will help moms develop and keep a loving, secure connection with their daughters, while helping them to be confident in all that God has created them to be.

The course includes:

8 video lessons for mom, giving behind the scenes coaching on the mental, emotional, and physical world of her daughter.

Conversation guides to foster deep discussions between mom and daughter.

And a downloadable journal to spark a more intimate connection between mom, daughter, and God.

For more information on the course, RAISE CONFIDENT DAUGHTERS, go to www.cpguides.org.

The Dangers of Growing Up in a Christian Home

In this episode of Raising Sinners, we talk about the dangers that might arise as we raise our kids. First and foremost, we want to guard against passing down a religion. No one needs more religion. But how do we pass on an authentic, Christian faith and not just a good, moral lifestyle? That’s the question. Susie Hawkins is our guest. Susie has been a mentor for Lisa and Chrissie, and a trusted advisor. She talks about the book she read early on in her parenting, that helped shape her approach to biblical parenting and passing down the baton of faith.

We also talk about DECONSTRUCTION. It’s a hot topic in Christian circles today. It’s a hard topic as well. Many children leave home into adulthood, questioning so much of what they were taught to believe.

So much of parenting is taking our hands off the wheel and allowing the Holy Spirit to lead, guide and direct. For parents that’s hard most days. But we trust Him. Our children are His children. And we trust Him.

We hope you’re encouraged and inspired by today’s episode. We’re not going to shy away from discussing tough topics. We hope you won’t either. God bless you and thanks for listening!

What BAGS are your kids carrying? With Chris Sasser

We’re thrilled to have Chris Sasser with us again on the Raising Sinners Podcast. Chris has been around kids for a while now, serving as youth pastor for many years and now as pastor of Family Ministries at Port City Community Church in Wilmington, NC. Whether it’s his own kids or a student at the church, he sees up close and personal what kids are up against today and how many are struggling with identity. Aren’t we all? The world is telling us one thing, we’re struggling to believe what God’s word says about us. And the cycle continues.

In this episode, Chris shares how his passion to help people embrace their true identity in Christ and live a life for God, led him to write his very first book, BAGS.

BAGS was written to help parents lead their kids into a more emotionally, relationally, and spiritually healthy life. What bags do kids pick up as they grow? How can we help them unpack these bags? And what are the long-lasting negative impacts of these bags. How can we help them lighten the load?

Chris shares the 8 most common bags kids grab, put on and oftentimes wear into adulthood.

Listen in for a candid, and engaging conversation as well as how to ask the question to your child…”What bags are you carrying?”

Here’s how you can get in touch with Chris:

The Mom Squad – 1st Edition

Welcome to RAISING SINNERS! We are so excited to launch a new series today – The Mom Squad! Occasionally, we’ll gather with some moms who are “in the game” and chat about all the things - cell phones, hormones, schooling, discipline, friends, community, keeping the spark alive in our marriages and really anything they are wanting to talk about. This will be moms talking to moms. And we hope you love it.

We can all agree that there’s always something we’re grappling with. Every season has its share of struggle. And we hope this group of moms will encourage you and make you very aware that you aren’t alone.

Today on THE MOM SQUAD, let us introduce you to Becky Leach (she’s a regular on The Wonder Podcast – check it out if you haven’t! ) and Camryn Young. Becky is a wife, mom of 3, author, podcaster, speaker, and artist. Her insights really helped Camryn on today’s episode, because Becky is a little further along in her parenting journey and Camryn has 3 children ages 3 and under. Camryn is also Lisa’s youngest daughter.  Camryn loves to read, sing, play with her littles and enjoy a pedicure occasionally when the moons align. She’s in survival mode right now as you can imagine.

Listen in and be encouraged by today’s episode of Raising Sinners – The Mom Squad!

Parent2Parent: Episode 1

We asked for it and we got it…PARENTING ADIVCE!!!

When we asked parents for their one piece of advice, they were passionate and eager to share. We compiled their nuggets of wisdom and decided to drill down on some of the main points parents saw as priorities in parenting.

In this first episode of Parent2Parent, we talk about being the perfect parent (not possible), mom guilt (it’s a thing) and comparison. And let’s be real, social media has stepped up comparison’s game. We can go from feeling okay about ourselves to “less than” in .05 seconds following an afternoon “scroll.”

Raising Kids to Follow Christ with Chris Sasser

We can’t begin to tell you how much we enjoyed our conversation with Chris Sasser.

For all of us raising our children, the end goal is for them to have their own faith. We pray what we teach them about God will “stick.” Right? We pray they make their faith their own.

If you are a parent “in the game” raising your children, you will want to grab a pen and take notes! Chris is full of wisdom. He’s so easy to talk to and making a big impact in his own family and in the lives of those around him.

We asked him to give us strategies for teaching our kids to love God with their whole heart. Here’s what he had to say:

#1 – Pursue a relationship first and foremost. Strive for CONNECTION over CONTENT. Don’t be so focused on teaching your kids something if you’ve never connected with them. They need to know how much you care before they know how much you know.

#2 – Model authentic faith. Be the same person on Sunday that you are on Thursday.

#3 – Surround them with other adults/role models pursuing Christ, e.g. In the church, camp, etc.

#4 – Give them time on their time. Be available when they need you and want to talk. Play when they want to play. This is a short season. Be available.

#5 – Trust and pray. “Parenting without prayer is the highest form of arrogance.” We must trust God and pray that they will surrender their hearts and lives to Christ.

We also asked Chris to share one FINAL piece of advice. Well, you’ll have to listen in to find out what that advice is but let us just tell you it’s easy and hard at the same time. And it’s pure gold. Listen in!

Nothing is Free! Teaching Financial Responsibility to Your Children with Jen and Tom Sherman

Jen and Tom Sherman have been friends of ours for many years. In fact, Jen was one of our first guests on The Wonder Podcast. Her love of books and reading culminated recently in her newest venture, and love, BOOKISH, a nonprofit bookstore in Malakoff, Texas. Tom has been in the residential mortgage lending business for 30 years and is currently branch owner at Benchmark Mortgage.

They have two grown children, Meghan and Thomas.

When we were brainstorming about this topic, Jen and Tom immediately came to mind. And WOW did they deliver!

Did you know money is talked about A LOT in the Bible! More than almost any other topic. So, it’s a big deal. And we need to be talking about it with our children.

Jen and Tom share how they have consistently set aside time in their marriage annually to “get on the same page” financially. The look at the past, the present and future and plan accordingly. Then they let their children in on their vision. This is how they modeled financial responsibility. They were real and authentic about highs and lows, budgets, giving and the big picture.

Should your teen have a credit card? What about student loans? Stewardship? Budgets? Is it okay to say NO? YES!

“Our kids need to know that NOTHING IS FREE,” Tom Sherman. Boom.

Want to get in touch with Tom? Ask him some questions?

My Divine Marriage/My Divine Role with Carmen Schroeder Part 3

Thank you for joining us for Part 3 of this series. Carmen Schroeder has been our friend for a while now. She’s self-taught in Hebrew and our “go-to” person for all things Torah. Okay all things life. There, we said it. She’s that friend. And when we decided to spend time talking about our roles in marriage and how that manifest in our parenting, we knew she had to join the conversation.

Are you struggling with your role in your marriage? Wishing and hoping for a change in your spouse? Feeling hopeless and alone? Does the grass seem greener next door? If so, let’s head straight for the Garden. All the way back to Genesis. We start there and learn exactly what scripture says about who we are and Whose we are. And it’s good.

“It is Written.” “It is Rotten.” 2 choices. Which will you choose?

Join us as we learn together, grow together, and seek the scriptures for truth about our identity and role within marriage. God’s plan is always better. And it’s divine! Over the next 3 episodes, you’ll get a taste of Carmen’s teaching that will leave you wanting more. If that’s the case, visit her at the link below.

2 part series – Praying for Your Adult Children with Merry Worrell

During this 2-part series, Lisa and Chrissie talk with Merry Worrell about praying for adult children. Merry is a wife and mom of 3 grown children. Her background is in Children’s Ministry and Mental Health Counseling. A Bible study leader, Merry also leads and mentors girls and moms through spiritual formation. She is passionate about the Body of Christ knowing the Word, and the Father’s great love.

This conversation was such a blessing to us personally. Merry shared how she feels she really learned to pray after her children were grown. “It’s interesting, we raise our children and pray, but we are in such control we don’t really give much to God. We just worry in His direction. But as our children grow and start living their lives, we realize we never really had control. And certainly don’t. now.”

We talk about walking in the Spirit and growing our faith, instead of being focused on the prayer needs. Just walk. Are we consumed by His presence or their (our) problems?

Are you in community with other prayer warriors? Are you praying outside your 4 walls?

When we have a list and pray mightily for our children, husbands, community, friends, country…we are making a Kingdom impact. Let’s go moms!!!

We hope you enjoy and are encouraged by this episode of Raising Sinners! God bless you!

A New Years Message

It’s almost 2022! Congratulations! We made it! We just wanted to share a very quick word of thanksgiving and encouragement today. A new year is a fresh start – a fresh start in our walk with the Lord, a fresh start in our parenting, a fresh start with family and friends and a fresh start in life. (actually), EVERY DAY in Christ is a fresh start because He makes ALL things new!

As we turn the calendar on a new year, may we walk closer to our Savior, make decisions that reflect our commitment to Him and proclaim His goodness daily. God bless you! Happy 2022!

Matthew’s newest album, WE NEED CHRISTMAS, is such a joyous mix of new songs he’s written coupled with classics you’re sure to love. It’s been on repeat in our house for a month now! When asked about the inspiration behind his new album Matthew shares, “Christmas is a time when our hearts can be powerfully reminded that the peace, hope, love and joy we all need can still be found in our Savior.”

During the month of December, Matthew is performing a limited number of shows in the US. However, there’s a virtual performance happening December 21-25! Check out MatthewWest.com for information, tickets and show times. Join your family and friends and watch Matthew perform all the songs from his new album and usher in the Christmas season.

Raising Kids to Walk in Community – It Takes a Village

Hebrews 10:25 – “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together as is the manner of some but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching.”

We’re meant to do Church (life) together – in other words, the Church needs each other. And our community is vital to growth, encouragement, protection, and life. But how? Life, schedules, and commitments sometimes overtake our best laid plans and, add to that, our kids don’t always cooperate!

In this episode of Raising Sinners, we discuss the WHY it’s important for our children to be in community, WHAT community is and HOW to do it. God’s word has a lot to say about community and why we need it.

We’ve isolated ourselves recently, haven’t we? Maybe you, as the parent, don’t have community right now. Make it a priority to find it again. Every day is a new start and new opportunity to walk toward God and His glorious plan for our lives. Just do it!

When Your Child Struggles to Fit In

Parenting a child throughout life includes parenting them in and through their struggles. It hurts us to watch our child in angst as they don’t fit the mold that seems to fit all the other kids, or struggle to find their group. When we decided to tackle this topic on Raising Sinners, we wanted to treat it like moms gathering around a table with a cup of coffee, discussing this topic that we’ve all walked through at one time or another. So that’s what we did! We’re frank and hopefully encouraging as we remember our own experiences and remind parents in the thick of it that this is truly a short season and your impact is great!

“The struggle keeps us on our knees.” We’ve said it many, many times and it’s true for our kids and it’s true for us. We need God every day, every hour.

“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2

In episode 2 of RAISING SINNERS, we discussed growing a close-knit family. Dr. Larry Taylor was our guest and he shared helpful strategies to keep your family close long after graduation: !) Parenting Style 2) How we deal with conflict 3) Family Rituals and 4) Communication.

On this episode, we dive into COMMUNICATION. Are you a good communicator? Do you enjoy hard conversations? Do you love conflict?

Whether you were raised in a home of great communicators, or poor communicators, you can put steps into place that make your home communication friendly. Communication is a form of discipleship. Our words count. What does the scripture say about discipling our children? Deuteronomy 6 is clear – WE ARE THE ONES WHO TEACH, TRAIN AND DISCIPLE OUR KIDDOS!

So, let’s go parents! We got this! Let’s talk about all the things and keep those conversations on the table.

Raising a Close-Knit Family Part 1

Dr. Larry Taylor is our guest on RAISING SINNERS today. Dr. Taylor is the author of “Running with the Horses,” and we knew we wanted him as our guest early on because of his years of putting into practice what it takes to build, not only a kingdom family, but a close-knit family. Don’t we all want our kids to come back home to visit once they’ve left the nest? Yes!

Dr. Taylor discusses the daily, weekly, and yearly routines he put into place within his own family that helped develop their spiritual foundation, character, and future.

We really dive in to two areas that help ensure our families are close knit – 1) communication and 2) family rituals.

Do you want a close-knit family? Do you want to put solid rituals into place within your family that help to pass the baton of faith on to your children and grandchildren? We can live it and preach it, but what matters most is the actual relationship we have with our children.

Introducing Raising Sinners

It all started in 2016 with Lisa Clark’s book, “Raising Sinners,” but she knew there was more to say. The Raising Sinners podcast tackles all the topics and questions parents have about raising their kids! Lisa and her co-host Chrissie Dunham, and the occasional special guest, cover it all: sibling rivalry, dating, and social media, but also discuss raising children who don’t fit the mold and even that pesky “mama guilt.”

While sin can be fun in the moment, it’s never funny.
