Mikel Arteta defended his decision to replace Aaron Ramsdale with David Raya for Arsenal’s 1-0 win at Everton by predicting goalkeeping changes will become the norm, and said he “didn’t have the courage” to substitute his keeper in the past.
The Arsenal manager insisted both Ramsdale and Raya will be utilised this season, and he regrets not changing keeper on two unnamed occasions during the team’s title challenge last season.
“I haven’t had a single question on why Gabriel Jesus didn’t start. He has won more trophies than anybody else, including me, in that dressing room” he said.

A 25-year-old man has been charged an alleged attack on a football referee in Sydney last week. The referee is recovering in hospital after three teeth were knocked out and his jaw was broken in three places when allegedly attacked after the amateur game.

今シーズンのプレミアリーグが開幕しました。新型コロナウイルス感染拡大が2年以上続いている状況ではありますが、ヨーロッパへの旅行が少しずつ現実的になってきました。状況が落ちついてきた時期に、イギリスに渡りプレミアリーグの試合を見たいと思っている方もいるのではないでしょうか。プレミアリーグを見に行くとき、試合のチケットはどう手に入れるのか？チケットの入手は非常に難しく、また高値であるイメージがあるのではないでしょうか。今日はそのチケットについて話してみます。
Nottingham Forest is set to play Huddersfield in the 2022 EFL Championship Final on Monday the 30th of May, but this is more than just a football game.
Often called ‘the most lucrative match in football’, the winner will earn promotion to the Premier League and with it the riches that come.
Although the prize money for winning the match is small, promotion is worth at least £130m in the first season, with further riches coming should the team survive in the Premier League. Even if they do get relegated immediately, the parachute payments typically ensure teams are able to still survive.

We are joined by another special guest: Fuki Ishibashi. Fuki currently plays for Melbourne Knights in the Victorian Premier League as a central defender. Since moving to Australia in 2020, he has played at various levels, signing on with the Knights for the 2022 season.

What would you do with a cool £7m? Buy a luxury yacht? A penthouse suite? Maybe invest in your favourite football team? Or would you buy Diego Maradona’s 1986 World Cup kit?
The shirt went up for auction this week and became the most expensive sports memorabilia item ever, selling for £7.1m.
The shirt is of course best remembered for the Hand of God goal and the incredible goal where he dribbled through the England team, inspiring Argentina to go on to lift the trophy.
So today we want to talk about some of the items *we* might pay for; special items to us as football fans, and we’d love to hear from you too.
A football pitch. Just a patch of grass where 22 players run around and kick a ball for a little bit, right? Well, maybe in the old-days. Maybe still at amateur level. But get anywhere near professional football, and that patch of grass becomes incredibly important and incredibly scientific.
It can literally be the difference between a free-flowing attacking game of football and one where the ball gets stuck in midfield or just kicked long all day.
So here’s a crazy question: might a football pitch be the most important part of professional football?

At 5:19pm, Christian Eriksen was the first Danish player to step out onto the pitch at Parken. His team-mates waited a few seconds in the tunnel to let him have the stage to himself. The stadium in Copenhagen was about to be filled — kids with printed photos of Eriksen on sticks and shirts with his name and number 10 on the back ever-present in the stands.
He clapped towards the fans and they returned the salute, welcoming him back to the national stadium for a friendly against Serbia. Everyone knew what had happened 290 days before at one side of that same pitch during Denmark’s opening match at the European Championship against Finland on June 12.
On the day before the Serbia match, Eriksen had revisited the scene of his collapse for the first time for his national team’s final training session. The warm-up session had been placed in exactly the area where Eriksen had suffered his collapse. When returning to the spot, he just started clapping spontaneously.
That was it. He had confronted his past.

Money and football are more connected than ever. And with that, human rights records and business dealings of Premier League club owners coming under increased scrutiny. But unless they’ve got an oligarch or state fund to pump money, it’s hard for clubs to keep up with the relentless rise of Premier League players’ wages and transfer fees.
That money needs to come from somewhere, and broadcast revenue and ticket sales no longer cover the costs of players who, in the past, would have been more easily within reach.
The other big avenue for clubs to make money is through sponsorships. Aside from the familiar front-of-shirt sponsor, it is now commonplace for clubs to have dozens of sponsors in all sorts of categories. Today we’re talking sponsorships.

Handball is a common-sense thing.
- If a player gets hit on the hand from a close distance: no handball. Fair.
- If a player moves their arm towards the ball to block it: handball. Sensible.
- If a player uses their arm or hand to score: handball. Pretty straightforward.
- If a player uses their shoulder: no handball.
Right? Well, historically, the handball laws have been unclear, so today we want to discuss the issue and if there’s anyway to make it better.

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min wrote their names into the record books two weeks ago, after combining to devastating effect once again in Tottenham Hotspur's' 4-0 win at Leeds United.

Most teams have a free-kick specialist. Or rather, most teams have a player who fancies themselves as one. However, it’s actually quite rare for a direct free kick to end up in the back of the net. For many young football fans, it might just be the best job in the world. A pitch side seat to watch your heroes up close, and all you have to do is fetch the ball every now and then.

His show, alongside hosts Chris Stark and Tom Fordyce, has become *the* football podcast to listen to. But how has someone who was first known for being "tall" turned into highly successful footballer and now highly successful podcaster?
They hunt in packs, often fuelled by alcohol, cocaine and other drugs. Though some are old enough to be fathers and even grandfathers, they're hooked on violence and confrontation, and the well out-of-date idea that by fighting with opposition fans, they're showing support for their club.
Though their numbers have decreased as technology has progressed and the football culture changed, these people are still around. And as we saw at the Euro 2020 Final in London, sometimes you don't need to be actively looking for violence at football to find it.

If you ever need proof that football is not an entertainment business, you only have to consider one thing: chants.
In an entertainment business, the people respond to the quality of what they have paid to see. Gigs, plays, comedy shows, films, exhibitions, immersive theatre, whatever: if it’s good, people will like it and react accordingly. If it’s bad, likewise.
Football isn’t like that, because when crowds are allowed into football grounds, they will respond, among other ways, by chanting and singing regardless of how good the game is. They will scream and shout and curse and express their displeasure, but fans will always sing and chant.
Every club has chants. From the smallest non-League team to the European champions: they might not be unique, they might not be clever, they might not be particularly tuneful, but everyone sings. It’s one of the things that binds everyone together.

Adelaide United player Josh Cavallo has come out as gay, becoming the only current top-flight male professional footballer in the world to do so.
The 21-year-old wrote on social media that he was "ready to speak about something personal that I'm finally comfortable to talk about in my life".
"I'm a footballer and I'm gay," the midfielder said in an accompanying video.
"All I want to do is play football and be treated equally."
An Australian own-goal kept Japan in the race for an automatic spot in next year's World Cup.
Australia defender Aziz Behich put the ball into his own net in the 85th minute Tuesday to give Japan a 2-1 victory and six points from four matches in Group B, three points behind the Aussies and six behind Saudi Arabia.
Goalkeeper Mat Ryan tipped a shot from Takuma Asano and the ball bounced off the post and then ricocheted off Behich and into the net, ending Australia's run of 11 consecutive wins in World Cup qualifying games.
"We kept fighting until the end and never gave up," Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said. "We showed our determination to get to the World Cup."

For something that seems so simple, there's actually a lot to penalties. There's of course a penalty in a match and there are penalty shootouts. There's the relationship of the player vs the goalkeeper. The psychology of the goal, the match result, the tournament. There's the crowd watching in the stadium and on TV. A penalty might last only a minute from when the referee awards the foul, but SO MUCH happens in that time.
Fans will be allowed to stand at Premier League and Championship stadiums for the first time in more than 25 years as part of a pilot programme that begins on January 1.
The Sports Ground Safety Authority is to invite expressions of interest from clubs in the two leagues to have pilots of safe standing this season.
Clubs must apply to be part of the ‘early adopter’ programme by October 6.
If approved, clubs will be able to operate a safe standing area from New Year's Day until the end of the season.
The introduction of designated safe standing areas in stadiums will see an end to the blanket ban on standing in the top two divisions of English football.

承認されるとクラブは元旦からシーズン終了まで安全立見席エリアを運営することが可能となります。
安全な立ち見席エリアが導入されることになると、英国サッカーのトップリーグでの立ち見全面的禁止の終焉を迎えることとなります。
Japan’s first professional women’s football league, the WE League, starts this weekend! Until now, the Nadeshiko League has been the top women’s league in Japan, however, the WE League has been established with the aim of creating a generation of professional women's footballers.
The WE in WE League stands for ‘Women’s Empowerment’, with the goal of “becoming a driving force for women’s empowerment in Japan,” and, “aiming for a society where all of us involved in the league are active as protagonists.

Euro 2020 — or is it Euro 2021? — finally kicks off next weekend, and it’s set to be a cracker. 24 countries, playing across 11 host cities in 51 matches, will compete for the ultimate prize - to be the champions of Europe.
This year’s tournament is one of the more complicated. The first to be played across the whole continent, with reduced crowds and extended squads, plus other changes to account for COVID 19. Since the introduction of VAR, teams have been left to lament what might have been if their striker's foot was one size smaller; if the ball had been played half a second sooner. Jose Mourinho has been appointed Roma manager from the start of next season. The 58-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the three-time Serie A champions.
"The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season," said Mourinho.
Mourinho was recently dismissed after 17 months in charge of Spurs following a poor second half of the season in which the north London club slipped from the top of the table to outside the European places.

The J.League is often rated as the best league in Asia and has produced Japanese superstars like Shinji Kagawa, Shinji Okazaki, Keisuke Honda, and many more. The extravagant buildup did not seem to match the occasion. Juventus was at home to Genoa, a standard Serie A game. What mattered, though, was not what Juventus was playing for, but what the team was playing in.

What goes on between players and managers behind closed doors is often speculated on. There are endless rumours of fights, arguments and practical jokes, but the reality is rarely discussed.
Matt Jarvis, previously of Wolverhampton Wanderers and West Ham United, missed the camaraderie during his recent spell without a club. "I don't think there's anything like it in any other industry," he says.

Every year, anywhere between June and September, and again in January, the football world turns into a frenzy. Club chairman and directors engage in poker battles with each other, trying to get the next superstar on the cheap. Agents, forever working away in the background, become central figures, negotiating deals for their clients, and never forgetting to look after themselves in the process. And the players, who sometimes feel like pawns in this game? Often they get their dream move. Many times they don’t.

Chinatsu Kira is a professional footballer, currently playing for Melbourne City in the Australian W-League. Originally from Oita, Japan, Chinatsu spent around 10 years playing for Urawa Reds before moving to Australia in late 2020.
Having made her national debut against New Zealand in 2014, she has represented her country 12 times, scoring 5 goals in that time. Most notably, she played at the U17 World Cup in 2008, and was part of the team which won the Asian Cup in 2014.

Football is a universal language. Or is it? There is undoubtedly a common understanding between players as soon as they cross the white line onto the pitch; often you don’t need words to be able to play well as a team.
But it does help. With the professional game never more eclectic than it is now, where, for example, over 60% of players playing in the Premier League are foreign, having players who share a language can be crucial for team morale, tactics, coach instructions, and dealing with the media.
But the language of football has evolved to be so much more than just that of the words used on the pitch. Where every moment is broadcast and analysed all over the world, journalists battle with overused cliches, finding new ways to describe the same thing and word counts.
So what is the language of football?

No matter the age, the level, the country or the match result, there’s always one thing you can guarantee: the referee will be a talking point.
Referees are so crucial to football. Competitive matches literally cannot happen without them. Yet, every single week, they are the biggest talking point in the game. The deal with abuse from players and fans during the game, and endless scrutiny afterwards, whether they make a mistake or not.
We’re all guilty of it; a football fan who says they’ve never criticised a referee is a liar. But how do you become a referee? Perhaps more importantly, WHY would you become one?

As in other major sports, advanced data analytics are being used more frequently in football, both in the front offices and by the media reporting on the sport. Football clubs and journalists alike are always searching for an upper hand, be it in squad-building and scouting or in commentary and analysis – and analytics have the power to do so when used properly.
Enter Tifo Football, a media company that attempts to distill a large quantity of complex data into easily digestible videos on YouTube. They discuss team tactics, individual player breakdowns, and tell long-lost stories from football’s colorful history using healthy doses of data, analysis and animation. As of today, Tifo Football is now part of The Athletic.

Shimizu S Pulse announced their new slogan for season 2021 and the reaction on social media has been fierce to say the least.
The club explained the meaning behind the slogan on their website: “no matter how big the wall is, supporters and the club will work together to break it down.”
The official definition of the word “PENETRATE” is “to go through something”, however, the word is often used as sexual innuendo. I’m sure you can guess what that means!
As such, reaction from English-speaking J.League fans on Twitter was rough, with some going as far as to say they should rip it up and start again.
Many others have questioned: how on earth did they end up here?

With Britain leaving the European Union, there are new laws as of January 1 - and that means new regulations in this month's transfer window, which could have previously restricted the signings of Paul Pogba, Cesc Fabregas and Hector Bellerin among others.
Premier League clubs are to be limited to three U21 signings each transfer window with all foreign players subjected to a point-based threshold to be eligible to play in the UK.
Players from European Union countries will not be allowed to be signed without a work permit while foreign players under the age of 18 cannot be bought at all as part of post-Brexit regulations, meaning Premier League clubs will have to wait to secure the services of top young talent from abroad.

英国ではEU離脱が2020年末で移行期間が完了したため、2021年の1月1日からプレミアリーグを含めた移籍市場にも様々な影響が及ぶとされています。新たに採用される基準になると、これまでプレミアに移籍してきた、ポグバ、ファブレガス、ベジェリンなどの移籍は認められていなかった可能性が高いと指摘されています。
これまでプレミアリーグでは外国籍選手を獲得するためには、外国人労働許可証が必要となり、直近2年間の代表歴などが求められてきました。対してEU圏内の国籍を持つ選手には、代表歴などにかかわらず自由に契約することが可能でしたが、イギリスがEUを脱退するためにこの規則が変更されます。
1月の移籍市場で獲得できる21歳以下の海外選手の数は3人までに制限され、シーズンごとでは最大6人までにとなります。また、FIFAのルールのもとEU離脱によって、クラブが18歳以下の海外選手を獲得することができないことにもなります。
2020 was a strange year for us all. The coronavirus pandemic has caused havoc and death all over the world and unfortunately it doesn’t look like ending anytime soon.
However, in the middle of it, Tommy and Tomo met on Twitter and this podcast was born. We’ve never met in person and are podcast amateurs, but somehow the podcast has gone very well and each week we find more and more listeners. Thank you to everyone for listening!

This weekend’s North London derby is intriguing as ever. Spurs, at home, going to the match in 1st place, unbeaten in the league since the opening day and with a forward line that most teams would dream of.
On the contrary, Arsenal have been extremely poor lately. They've only won one match in their last 5 in the league, scoring just 2 goals in that period. Whilst their Europa League form has been impressive, their last 3 matches in the Premier League have been a 3-0 loss at home to Aston Villa, a 0-0 draw away to Leeds and 2-1 loss at home to Wolves.
However, this is the North London derby and anything can happen. Form goes out the window, as two fierce rivals battle it out for 90 minutes.
This weekend will see the first fans enter stadiums since March, with 2000 home fans allowed at matches in London. Will these Spurs fans see their team over the line?

On Friday evenings between August and May, in living rooms, bedrooms and offices around the world, millions will be in the final throes of frantically tinkering with a global maths and probability game.
One hour and one minute later, their eyes will be glued to that day's Premier League match. They will bury their heads into their phones, flit between illegal streams and repeatedly hit F5 on work computers. But most won’t be supporting either side. Some won’t even be football fans. All, however, will be itching for point hauls and bragging rights.
The game is Fantasy Premier League. This season, close to 8 million ‘managers’ around the world will select a virtual squad – composed of 15 real-life footballers – to accrue points based on players’ live in-game stats and contributions. Users can tweak tactics and transfer players within a £100 million budget ahead of a weekly deadline, with the aim of maximising points to top mini-leagues and global rankings.

Masahiro Sugiyama was born in Kiryu City, Gunma Prefecture. In 2005, he graduated from London Metropolitan University and landed an internship at the Asian Football Confederation.
After that, he became coach and manager at the Japanese Soccer Club (LJJ FC) in London, before returning to the Asian Football Confederation in 2011.
Masa is now the head of grassroots development in the Technical department of the AFC, and received a PhD in Sport Management from the University of Malaysia last year.

In 2016, a US appeals court upheld a $1bn (£700m) settlement between the NFL and a group of retired players who had suffered brain damage as a result of concussions.
Since then, says NFL chief medical officer Dr Allen Sills, the organisation has instilled a "very aggressive programme to try and reduce those injuries".
In fact, Sills says, the league was able to "reduce concussions by 29%" last year.
NFL protocols mean each player gets the same exam whenever they are evaluated for a head injury - anyone deemed to have suffered a concussion cannot return to the field.
The tests, carried out in a pitch-side tent, include a set of simple questions about the game, the location or the player's team, while medics assess the player's eye movement, speech and behaviour.
Now, the Premier League and other leagues around the world are looking at what they can learn from the NFL.

More than a million people have signed Marcus Rashford's petition calling for children from poor families in England to get free meals in school holidays.
The Manchester United and England forward wants the government to provide free lunches amid fears for incomes as coronavirus restrictions increase.
His Parliamentary petition says that "no child should be going hungry".
Last week, British politicians rejected an extension of the provision of free school meals, saying they has already introduced more effective measures to support families.
サッカー・プレミアリーグのマンチェスター・ユナイテッド（マンU）に所属するマーカス・ラッシュフォード選手が政府に学校の夏休み期間中の無料給食制度の継続を呼びかけ、それを実現しました。
イギリス政府は新型コロナウイルス流行に伴うロックダウン中、貧困家庭救済のために学校給食の無料制度を今年の7月で終了する予定でした。
ラッシュフォード選手は議員宛の公開書簡を公表し、子どもの頃に無料給食に支えられたという自身の経験を交えながら、「食に飢える子供がいるべきではないと」と政府に方針の変更を訴えていました。
ボリス・ジョンソン首相と電話で会談し、方針の変更を取り付け、イングランドで130万人の子どもたちが、夏休み中も無料で給食を受け取ることができるようになりました。
しかしながら、政府は無料給食制度の継続は今後継続しないと先週発表し、異なる方法で困窮している家族を支援していくと説明しました。

Premier League clubs should not be allowed to have betting firms on their shirts, a government report has recommended. This season, half of Premier League clubs and 17 of 24 Championship clubs are sponsored by bookmakers.
The Chair of the report said "most people who gamble, enjoy it safely. However, gambling related-harm has made the lives of two million people miserable. It leads to hundreds of people each year taking their own lives, leaving families and friends devastated."
The report also recommends that there should be no gambling advertising in or near any sports grounds or sports venues, including sports TV programs but restrictions should not take effect for clubs below the Premier League before 2023. The English Football League (EFL) says the gambling sector contributes £40m a season to the league and its clubs and with the financial problems of the coronavirus pandemic, this "significant" contribution is "as important now as it has ever been".

One of the biggest disparities in football or any junior sport is the relative age effect - the advantage of being born earlier in the school year, and therefore being more physically mature.
A seven-year-old born early in the school year is likely to be bigger, faster and stronger than one born towards the end of the school year.
In 2013, a study of a junior league in England with 8,000 players found that the oldest players were playing in the top division, whilst the youngest players were playing in the lowest division. It was also found that 45% of players in top-level academies have players born between September and November.
