Episode 116: Whiplash, Sly, The Killer (2023)

Here’s the last episode of What’s New to Netflix for 2023, and we make it a good one as we discuss all of the new stuff coming out for the holiday season this December.

Then, Miles Teller is a drummer at a prestigious music school. But will his abusive teacher, played by J. K. Simmons, take things too far and cost him his sanity? We find out in Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash from 2014. Next, Sylvester Stallone talks about his upbringing, his career, and his comebacks in the documentary Sly from 2023. And last, David Fincher brings us the story of a hitman who gets revenge when things get too personal in The Killer from 2023.

Episode 115: The Golden Child, Meg 2: The Trench, Small Soldiers

Forget What’s New to Netflix; it’s time for What’s New to Max! We are continuing on from last month’s accidental crossover episode, reviewing three films that are new to the streaming service, Max. However, we do go over all of the new titles coming to Netflix in November 2023 at the top of the episode.

We start our review portion of the show by checking out the underrated Eddie Murphy adventure film, The Golden Child, from 1986. Then we join up with Jason Statham and his crew as they battle megalodons and a giant octopus in Meg 2: The Trench from 2023. And afterwards, we revisit the Joe Dante action comedy Small Soldiers from 1998.

All of this plus movies you could buy at McDonalds, Netflix puts a spin on golf, the return of The Crown, Adam Sandler is a lizard, Squid Game is now a reality, and Christmas movies where they have to save Christmas from something or there will never be a Christmas ever again!

Episode 114: Arrival, Public Enemies, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

We’re back with a new name, What’s New to Netflix, and an accidental crossover episode this time around, where we go through all of the new titles coming to Max in October 2023 instead of Netflix. Feeling confused? Don’t worry, so were we, but we’re seeing this through, as this will be part one of a two-episode special that will be all about stuff coming to Max.

Then we review some stuff that’s actually on Netflix when we take a look at the philosophical sci-fi alien film Arrival from 2016, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner, directed by Denis Villeneuve. Afterwards, Johnny Depp plays John Dillinger in the gritty historical crime drama Public Enemies from 2009, directed by Michael Mann. And finally, we talk about Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues from 2013, with Will Ferrel reprising his role as Ron Burgundy, directed by Adam McKay.

All of this plus, like we mentioned, we totally goofed up and went over everything coming to Max instead of Netflix! What a way to start our new rebranded podcast! Hopefully, if we do something like this again in the future, it will be intentional. But we still think this will be a cool treat for all of you, and if it isn’t, let us know!

Then, we drive through a post-apocalyptic wasteland and almost get eaten by a group of psychotic killer cannibals in Drifter from 2016. Next, we watch some of the most droll humor about a group of thirty-somethings in Judd Apatow’s Love. And finally, we watch an animated film about the trials and tribulations of being ‘internet-famous’ in Nerdland from 2016 with voice work from Paul Rudd and Patton Oswalt.

All of this plus some of the best IMDB descriptions we’ve ever read, the creator of Weeds can’t stop cranking out shows, uneventful films with no plots, Christmas movies in July, more quality programming from the CW, and movies we actually want to see! (for a change).

Episode 28: Kung Fu Panda, Deja Vu, The Discovery

On this episode of What’s New to Netflix Instant!? we get very deep and philosophical as we take on three films that have a lot in common but also a whole lot ‘NOT’ in common. It’s all good fun!

First off, we explore this month’s new releases. Next, we discover how to believe in ourselves and kick a lot of ass with Jack Black in Kung Fu Panda from 2008. Then, we fold time in on itself and try to save a literal ‘boatload’ of people with Denzel Washington in Deja Vu from 2006. And finally, we uncover where we go after we die with Jason Segel in The Discovery from 2017.

Also, the sounds of thunder in the background, stealing your favorite NBA player’s talent, fake trailers being the best part of your movie, really terrible Beatles covers, a monkey with an IMDB page, and the ‘90s are back with the return of Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Bill Nye: The Science Guy!

Episode 25: License to Drive, Around the World in 80 Days, Death Race 2050

On this episode of What’s New to Netflix Instant!? we get down to some serious Netflix business (kind of).

First, we check out this month’s new releases, and then we fail our drivers test and hit the road with Corey Haim and Corey Feldman in License to Drive from 1988. Then we hit the road again (or actually the sky) with Jackie Chan and Steve Coogan in the convoluted Around the World in 80 Days from 2004. Then we get back to the road with a whole cast of violent sociopaths in Death Race 2050 from 2017.

All of this plus more documentaries and Netflix Originals than you can shake a stick at. We do our best to navigate a very disappointing March Netflix release schedule.

Episode 23: Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh, Dough, Level Up

It’s our year-end episode of What’s New to Netflix Instant!? so we rattle off our lists of the top 3 worst/best movies that we’ve talked about on the show in 2016!

And last, but certainly not least, we try to save our girlfriends while singing karaoke in the underrated, Level Up from 2016.

All of this plus a huge lack of holiday-themed films (thank god), a ton of Netflix originals, Captain America or something, its all really good take our word for it!

Episode 22: Mascots, Millennium, Without a Paddle

On this episode of everyone’s favorite Netflix podcast (we hope!) we tackle three films of exceptional quality (kind of!) and list off the films coming to your Netflix Instant queue for November 2016!

And last, we go into the woods to find some buried treasure and to reconnect with our good buddies in Without a Paddle from 2004.

Also, films that Netflix removes and then re-adds to their queue, good films based on crappy Stephen King books, celebrating Christmas with Thomas the Tank Engine, more Netflix originals no one cares about, and…zebra wallpaper?

Another What’s New to Netflix Instant!? and we are all up in your summer when we discuss three vastly different films in addition to bringing you all the latest descriptions that ScreenCrush.com won’t dish out on your July 2016 Netflix Instant queue.

Edgar from 2011. And last, and certainly least, we dive right into the dark web and regret our decision soon thereafter in Dark Web from 2016.
