Le Run Down
This podcast allows runners to connect and envision what they could become. Everyone starts somewhere but it’s how you move forward that determines which path you’ll take. For some, running is just exercise, however we believe it is much more than that: it’s mental, physical and in some cases even spiritual. Our guests are inspiring in terms of their accomplishments but they put one foot in front of the other just like everyone else.
#113: Ben Leclair woke up paralyzed from the neck down, today he's looking to beat his 12.2km performance

We have some big news, the time has come for our first Le Run Down host Justin Pugliese to move on, good news for all of you, Justin has launched his own podcast, @justinstridepod. Give it a listen!

While we begin our search for a new host for the show, our guest hosts emma.deguara and leslie woods interview pro wakeboarder, Ben Leclair for his second appearance on the pod.

Catch the first episode #16 with Ben Leclair here.

Heads up! Both Ben and Emma are francophones, so we go back and forth between French and English.

I want to apologize in advance, if you're not bi-lingual, you may have trouble following along with the conversation.

We will be publishing a video of the episode that will include subtitles.

The video we played at the start of our conversation with Ben is Natural Playground recorded in late 2016.

The Q&A that followed the interview asked Ben how he edits videos with his injuries. Here is a video of Ben showing his editing setup.

That's all for now, gotta run.

#112: Jerry Hughes - Endurance athlete, Ultra, Adversity, Gardner's Syndrome, 48 Hour Canadian Record, Marathons, 100 Milers

On this episode of Le Run Down I had an eye opening conversation with ultra runner, Jerry Hughes.

He overcame adversity far before getting into running, pushing forward through his diagnosis and treatment for Gardner's Syndrome.

He used running as a way to improve his health and quickly realized endurance was for him. From marathons, to 100 milers and now the Canadian 48 hour record, he's inspiring the run community and proving that we are all capable of so much more than we think.

On this episode of Le Run Down I had a fun conversation with professional triathlete, Katie Zaferes.

Katie was a natural runner growing up becoming a multi-time cross country champion in High School. She was later identified by the USA Triathlon Recruitment Program and never looked back.

She's been competing at the Elite level for almost 10 years now and has shown steady progress throughout her career. Katie thought that starting a family would slow her down but instead it's fueled her fire for competition.

David's first love was cycling, embarking on long multiday tours to travel and explore Europe. He still uses the bike to commute but now it's more of a way to get to exciting run destinations.

He's an exceptional endurance athlete but what makes David even more interesting is his keen understanding of fueling and how it affects performance. It's a topic I've been very curious about lately and I can't wait to share his knowledge with you all.

On this episode of Le Run Down I enjoyed a great conversation with Elite Distance runner and Mile2Marathon coach, Justin Kent.

Justin played all sports growing up but decided to turn his focus to running. With the influence of his father and coach's, he's been able to grow up through the sport in a positive way.

He holds speedy times in the 1500 meters all the way up to the marathon and he races all distances to keep himself sharp for any challenge. His ultimate goal is to make an Olympic team, slowly building year after year in pursuit of his own personal potential.

On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with Canada's best 10K runner, Benjamin Flanagan.

Ben played all sports growing up but showed some promise in X country back in high school. It's there that the dream to one day make an Olympic team was born.

He currently hold Canada's 10k record and many other titles. And most recently took home his 3rd win at the Falmouth road race. Seems like he's gaining momentum at the perfect time, as he looks to seize this opportunity and make his first Olympic appearance in Paris 2024.

On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with amputee ultrarunner and cancer survivor, Jacky Hunt-Broersma.

Originally from South Africa, she moved around a lot before eventually calling Arizona her home. In 2001 a cancer diagnosis required the amputation of her leg, but eventually she found running which gave her a new outlook on life.

Today she holds multiple endurance records as an amputee runner. Most recently completing 104 marathons in 104 straight days for charity, proving that we are all capable of extraordinary things.

Bonus: Revisiting EP 17, recorded at the 2019 Boston Marathon with Tommy Rivers Puzey

Ways to help Tommy and his family:

Fundraiser for Stephanie Catudal by John Peel : Rest up, Tommy, we'll see you soon (gofundme.com)

On this episode of Le Run Down we throw it back to the Boston from 2019, where we sat down with Tommy Rivers Puzey. It was the last time the race was held in-person, over two years ago.

Tommy gratuitously accepted our invitation to chat and shared his journey with us. We spoke about the marathon at length and he let us in to everything that brought him to that point. A lot has happened since then however.

Early in 2020 Tommy was diagnosed with NK T-Cell lymphoma, which is an extremely rare form of cancer. He battled through, fighting for his life and has since made a miraculous recovery. We're blessed that we were able to have spoken to Tommy that weekend in Boston and no doubt, if his body allowed, he'd love to toe the line with his peers at the 125th Boston marathon on Monday.

So whether you're racing this year or just need that extra bit of inspiration, give this episode a listen and enjoy all his wisdom.

Eyes Up, Stout heart, Rage on.

She was active growing up, taking a liking to both hockey and running, and her love for the latter was fostered by the sense of community within the sport.

With a competitive spirit and lighthearted attitude, Michelle doesn't shy away from challenges. Most recently taking on The Speed Project "Do it yourself" edition with 11 other women in what was an incredibly uplifting experience.

We'll discuss his journey into endurance sports, the challenges beginners face and all the lessons along the way. It's not always about winning or being the best, in fact for most of us, it's more about enjoying the process and taking what you can on race day.

#62: CJ Albertson - Elite Marathoner, 7th @ U.S Trials, Marathon Project, Crazy Workouts, Make Your Bad Day Average

On this episode of Le Run Down I had an entertaining talk with Elite Marathoner and 50K track World Record Holder, CJ Albertson.

He grew up with a competitive nature and a desire to win at everything he did, not just in sports. That spirit definitely carried through into his pro marathon career.

We spoke about CJ's incredible showing at the U.S trials, his experience at the marathon project and how his training regiment might be a little crazier than most. He's one of the most promising marathoners in the sport, so don't be surprised if you see his name atop the leader-board in the near future.

On this episode of Le Run Down I had a fun chat with marathoner, event host and award winning actor, Stephen Alan Wilson.

Stephen discovered running in 2014 as a way to shed a few pounds and it changed his life. What started as a few miles a week quickly tuned into a healthier lifestyle, half and full marathons, with the occasional podium finish.

His career as an actor and long-time event host has taken him around the world, where he loves to encourage others to lace em up, head out for a run and most importantly, have fun!

On this episode of Le Run Down I had a powerful conversation with Hedi Moussavi.

He grew up playing sports as a way to fit in, and only recently started running. After surviving a life threatening illness just over a year ago, running is how he chose to celebrate living and honor the memory of those who have passed.

In episode 14 Kat said "we're just ordinary people doing extra ordinary things." And Hedi's feat of 50 marathons in just over 100 days is nothing short of extraordinary.

On this episode of Le Run Down we spoke to the funny and charismatic Chris Chavez. You may recognize his work on SI.com, or his voice on one of the podcasts that he hosts for the Citius Mag network, but he has his own running goals and aspirations too.

He’s already covered all six marathon world majors and he’s been to the Olympics too, but what fuels his fire right now is cracking that 3 hour marathon mark. One thing's for sure, if his running goes as well as his journalism, he’ll be crossing the line sub 3 in no time.

From head coach, to elite coordinator for Ottawa race weekend, Dylan remains present in running. It’s clear that he’s passionate but he may be more connected to the community now, than ever before.

For our 50th episode of Le Run Down we reached for the stars and got to have an amazing conversation with Meb Keflezighi.

His story is one that could be turned into a movie script as his family left a world of poverty and war in Eritrea and made their way to America. He knew that every opportunity was precious, and he did not squander the chance to do something great with his life.

He worked his way up the ranks, earning a silver medal at the olympics and winning the New York City and Boston marathons, but always remained grateful and humble throughout his journey. This episode is a little shorter than most but make sure you listen to every word because just like in running, Meb makes every moment count.

In this episode of Le Run Down, we had the privilege of speaking with Canadian Olympian and elite distance runner, Lanni Marchant.

Running was a punishment when she started out as a figure skater, but today it's the sport she loves most.

We discuss her early struggles with sports, mental health, her journey to Rio, and how she’s handled the last 3 years recovering from multiple surgeries. Despite all that, she sounds more driven than ever to line up for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer.

#43: Matt Luke Meyer - Marathon Elite, run coach, Take The Bridge, Speed Project, New York, Boston, run community, turning life around

On this episode of Le Run Down I with run coach, marathon runner and community leader, Matt Luke Meyer.

Matt only found running later in life. He moved to New York City to pursue an acting career and was working as a bartender to make a living, which led him down an unhealthy path. He didn’t like who he had become and decided he needed to make a change.

That change was in fact life changing. Running was only a small part of the at the time but five years later, running is all Matt knows. He’s wrapped himself in the new york city run community and pushed his limits further that he ever thought possible. He’s got even bigger dreams on the horizon and if this trend continues, his potential is endless.

#42 Nate Riech - Para Team Canada athlete, track and field star, public speaker, National title holder, Gold at para Pan Am games

On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with a Para Athletics Team Canada track and field star Nate Riesh.

He comes from a family of gifted elite athletes and for Nate, it wasn’t any different. He excelled in baseball and his future in the sport looked bright, but suddenly a golf accident took that away.

Nate was paralyzed on his right side but after years of therapy, he found running. He now competes on the world stage as a 800 and 1500meter runner but if not for the support of family and friends, he would not be where he is today. (His words, not ours).

#40: Francois Jarry - Elite runner, Coronavirus effect, marathoning, pre-race meals, coaching, consistency, group training

On this episode of Le Run Down I had a great chat with one of the province’s best runners, Francois Jarry.

He fell in love with the sport years ago when he won a race he entered in high school and he never looked back. He’s been the Quebec ten thousand meter champ for the last five years but he’s a pretty great marathoner too. Running two hours and twenty two minutes in his elite marathon debut. And his goal is to set the Quebec marathon record one day.

For Francois, running was a sport that helped shape his identity. Something I think we can all relate to one way or another on our own running journey.

On this episode of Le Run Down I got to speak with sports nutritionist, triathlete and BRAVA co-creator Stephanie Jamain.

We spoke about her introduction to running, how sports help her stay active and spend time with friends, and how her love for triathlon led to the creation of Brava.

On top of it all she’s a sports nutritionist so it was fun to pick her brain on that, especially when it comes to fueling for these long endurance races. Hope you enjoy this talk as much as I did.

#37: Geoff McGregor - 100 miler, ultra trail running, mental strength, vegan athlete, group running

On this episode of Le Run Down I chatted with my good friend and training buddy Geoff McGregor. Growing up in British Columbia he took a liking to music and eventually got into endurance sports.

It was through sport that he learned that hard work leads to positive results. Those same life lessons translated into the world of ultra running.

I consider Geoff to be one of the strongest runners I know both through his ability to tackle big training weeks and also his mental toughness. He’s got a drive to succeed at everything he does, yet somehow always finds a way to make it fun and enjoyable for those around him.

#35: Andrew MacMartin - Former pro triathlete, World Cup Champion, marathoner, new goals, returning to sport

On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with former Pro Triathlete and World Cup Champion, Andrew MacMartin.

As a young teenager he took a liking to endurance sports, immersing himself in cross country and cycling. But when he heard about triathlon, that became his focus and becoming the best in the world quickly became his long term goal.

Despite tremendous success as a pro athlete, he decided to step away from the sport he loved. After a long hiatus, he found his love for running again. Although he knows he can’t perform at the same level as once did, Andrew is motivated to break a two hour forty minute marathon before he turns fifty and I have no doubt he’ll get there.

In this episode of Le Run Down I made my way down to New York City for the marathon and had the opportunity to chat with elite marathoner, Allie Keiffer.

She went into her first marathon, thinking she was going to do the half the night before and ended up winning it with a time of 2:55:30. That was the 2016 Miami Marathon, and only a year later she managed to shave 25 minutes off her time, finishing 5th in New York.

Allie is resilient, dedicated, and focused on the Olympic trials in Atlanta next February.

In this episode of Le Run Down I discuss group running, the November Project and The Speed Project with Laurent Caudrellier.

After trying to make it in the big city of Toronto, it was apparent to him there was very little work-life balance. That’s why he moved back to Montreal and rediscovered himself just two years ago.

Now he’s a community leader. Joining different run groups on a weekly basis, supporting other people's goals, and co-leading the November Project every Wednesday morning in the old port @ 6:29 am. It sounds like that was a life-changer for Laurent, so hopefully, it could help you too.

On this episode of Le Run Down, I sat down with a good friend of mine and the most recent winner of the Ultra-Trail Harricana 65k, Olivier Collin.

Growing up he specialized in cross country racing and later on in the 1500m at the collegiate level. He was always a fast guy but when frustrating injuries came into play he was forced to change paths and pursue academics.

Now Olivier has found his passion for running again, this time through the trails. He's racing for fun, but with talent like his, it’s been tough to keep him off the leaderboard in his first season of ultras.

#21: Camille Charbonneau - Mental Skills Coach, Mindfulness & Meditation, Running, Developing the body and mind
On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with mental skills coach, Camille Charbonneau. She grew up playing rugby, and took a liking weight lifting and martial arts. Charbonneau embraced mindfulness and meditation in order to balance and counter the often aggressive nature of those activities. We go in depth on the topics of mental skills, confidence, self-talk, visualization, stress management, and goal setting, all of which might help you in your own development as an athlete. #20: Krista DuChene - Canadian Olympian, 3rd place Boston finish, mother of three, dietitian
On this episode of Le Run Down I drove down to Ottawa to speak with Marathon mom, Olympian, and dietitian Krista Duchene. Growing up she played hockey over the winter and ran in the summer, creating balance in her life. Her breakthrough came after her win at the Mississauga Marathon on mothers day. In 2016 she ran in the Rio Olympics, and in 2018, at the age of 41, she finished 3rd at the Boston Marathon. The results speak for themselves and Krista is proving that age is only a number. https://kristaduchene.com/ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krista_DuChene https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/trackandfield/kamauchi-linden-boston-marathon-winners-1.4621664 https://runningmagazine.ca/rio-2016/canadians-in-rio-olympic-marathon/

#19: Mathieu Dore - Ultra Runner, Strength and Conditioning Coach, Boston Marathon, Adventure Racing
On this episode of Le Run Down I had another great chat in Boston with ultra runner and strength coach Mat Dore. Growing up playing hockey, he used his competitive spirit to constantly challenge himself. That same intensity later translated into running and often pushed him to the limit. Since then, he's learned to harness that energy to train and race smart. We got to speak about this experience in ultra trail running, adventure racing and what he expected for his first ever Boston Marathon. Safe to say his prediction was pretty damn close. #18: Kelsey Hunter - Triathlete, OCRC runner, coach, marathon, managing stress, run goals
On this episode of Le Run Down I had a chat with Ottawa City Run Club member, triathlete and coach, Kelsey Hunter. She grew up as a swimmer and competed through university until it just wasn’t fun anymore. She retired from the sport she loved, until a few friends encouraged her to sign up for her first triathlon just 6 years ago. Since then she hasn’t looked back. We discussed Ottawa Race Weekend, her journey to becoming a triathlete, the stresses work can put on training. Growing up with professional athlete as a parent has taught Kelsey hard work. And with the Toronto Waterfront Marathon coming up this fall. She’ll use that mentality to try and get a Boston Qualifier. Can’t wait to see how she does! On this episode of Le Run Down I was lucky to have a great talk in Boston with professional endurance athlete, Tommy Puzey. From early childhood through high school and into university, running remained a constant in his life. In fact, once he started he never really stopped. Years of hard work and determination brought him to where he is today. He’s a student of sport and continuously pushes himself, to unlock his true potential. #16 Ben Leclair - Pro Wakeboarder, Wings for Life Ambassador
On this episode of Le Run Down I spoke with pro wakeboarder, Ben Leclair. He always had an interest in extreme sports but truly found his passion on the water. Determined to improve, he quickly found himself climbing the ranks and competing at the highest level. But one day an accident took that all away, paralyzing him from the neck down. 2 years later he sits in a wheelchair but has regained mobility in both arms. Ben has stayed positive since day one and definitely has the mindset to defy the odds and prove everyone wrong. On this episode of Le Run Down, I'm excited to share a conversation with Ultra Triathlon couple, Katherine and Kevin Becker. They started with team sprint triathlon, but now they've completed multiple Ironmans, 4 marathon world majors, crossed the grand canyon, and hold the Guinness World Record for most completed Ultraman races by a married couple. Their goal has always been to race for fun and fitness, and they've shown that anything is possible, if you set an objective and put your mind to it. Teaser: Le Run Down
Running is more than a form of exercise, it’s a symbol of health, fitness and passion. It’s something we all know how to do. We ran to the park as children, we played sports that involved running growing up and we ran for the bus at one point or another. No matter what the speed, what distance, we all simply put one foot in from of the other and that is what connects us all.
