Discovering the Charm of Vertical Pedal Boards

During a recent browsing session on Etsy, I stumbled upon an intriguing world of pedal boards. While searching for single pedal desktop stands, my curiosity led me to explore the realm of wooden vertical pedal boards. Personally, I've never been a fan of 3D printed products as they often lack the charm and durability that comes with something lovingly crafted by hand, from wood.

And there I found Douglas Pedal Boards - a collection of unique, hand-built vertical pedal boards that immediately captured my attention. These meticulously constructed works of art exuded a sense of craftsmanship and authenticity rarely found in mass-produced alternatives. Each board possessed its own distinct characteristics, far from the uniformity of factory-made counterparts.

In conclusion, the combination of artistry and functionality found in these handcrafted vertical pedal boards from Douglas Pedal Boards is truly captivating. They elevate the aesthetics of your pedal setup while offering a reliable foundation for your effects.

Solo Dallas Storm Pedal: The Secret Ingredient to Classic Guitar Tones

In Episode 24 of Anatomy of Tone, I delve into the hidden gem responsible for the iconic "Back in Black" tone of Angus Young and others. The Schaffer Vega Diversity System, originally designed as the first wireless unit for guitarists, evolved into a pivotal tool for tone enhancement. The Schaffer Vega sound remained elusive and shrouded in mystery for many decades. However, thanks to Fil Olivieri's relentless research and collaboration with Ken Schaffer (the original designer), a modern incarnation of the original Schaffer Vega has emerged sans the wireless aspect.

We now have at our disposal a pedal version of the Schaffer Vega sound, known as the Solo Dallas Storm, and I'll be embarking on some exciting experiments with it.

Additionally, I'll discuss Elaine Gould's invaluable reference book, "Behind Bars," which provides comprehensive insights into music notation.

Analog Man Sunface BC108, Motives and choosing a DAW

Learning the language or terminology of music can be helpful when communicating with other musicians. If we all have the same point of reference for a sound or technique, it makes it easier to understand each other.

Every once in a while, I will discuss music terminology to help musicians communicate more effectively at rehearsals, jams, or recording sessions. This week we will discuss the terms motive, sequence, and phrase.

Choosing the right DAW can be confusing to those just getting into recording. Sometimes it's hard to understand your needs and working style until you gain experience.

I'll discuss some DAWs and the subtleties that separate them.

Instrument Registers, Sound Stone Sustainer and Death By Audio Evil Filter

In this episode I will discuss how having knowledge of registers can help you troubleshoot notes getting lost on a recording or gig.

I will also do some sonic exploration using the Sound Stone Sustainer as well as the Death by Audio Evil Filter.

Understanding registers is crucial in music production. Different registers, such as low, middle, and high, help troubleshoot common issues. To address muddiness, adjust conflicting instruments' frequencies and create separation. Balancing the frequency spectrum ensures each element occupies its appropriate place. Consider register allocation during arrangement for clarity and separation, choosing instruments and sounds accordingly.

The Sound Stone Sustainer is an affordable alternative to the Ebow, offering the ability to sustain notes indefinitely and create experimental sounds on stringed instruments. It produces harmonic overtones and allows for feedback and drone effects when interacting with guitar pickups.

Additionally, it enables bowing techniques and the exploration of unconventional textures. The sustained notes can be layered and looped to create complex and immersive compositions.

The Death by Audio Evil Filter complements the Sound Stone Sustainer, offering aggressive and dynamic filtering effects. Together, they create captivating filtered textures and expressive filter sweeps by manipulating parameters like cutoff, resonance, and modulation. The combination allows for filtered feedback and oscillation, generating chaotic and distorted tones. By utilizing the Evil Filter's parameters alongside the Sound Stone Sustainer's sustained notes, you can shape and emphasize specific harmonics, creating complex and rich tones. Additionally, the interaction between the devices enables dynamic and expressive playing techniques, blurring the line between traditional guitar playing and experimental sound design.
