US to bar Hong Kong leader John Lee from attending APEC summit in November

Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee has urged the US to follow the guidelines and protocols of APEC, after it barred him from attending a major economic summit in San Francisco in November. China's foreign affairs ministry has called the ban illegal and unreasonable, and accused the US of performing a "bully act" that violates the basic norms of international relations. Mr Lee and 10 other Hong Kong and Chinese officials have been subject to US sanctions since 2020, after Beijing implemented a national security law. Those placed under sanctions are not allowed to enter the US unless granted a waiver by the government.
