Taiwan's ruling party presidential candidate Lai Ching-te has reaffirmed his commitment to defend the island's sovereignty.
At a news conference for international media, Lai Ching-te promised to resist Beijing's "One China" push and strengthen relationships with Western democracies.
China views Taiwan as its own territory, and although all three competing candidates for Taiwan's Presidency reject reunification, Beijing is pushing to oust the incumbent DPP.
Despite the Chinese government's refusal to engage in dialogue with the DPP, its presidential candidate says he's open to discussions if he wins Saturday's election.
"Even if we stand at the forefront of defending our values against authoritarianism, we are determined to safeguard peace and stability in the Taiwan street,” Lai said.
“While aspiring for peace we harbor no illusions."
