In this video, I discuss the ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) narrative and how it can impact the supply and prices of goods with my guest Lisa Hough. She researched the origins of ESG and found that it was created by the UN in the early 2000s as a way to reward virtuous companies. However, she believes that ESG has become more about virtue signaling than actual returns and explain how the ESG narrative has led to the creation of separate capital market structures and government interference in the free market, which can have negative consequences for economic activity. We highlight how large asset managers like BlackRock have influenced companies' production targets and investment decisions in the energy sector, leading to potential spikes in prices at the pump and share personal anecdotes of how ESG policies have affected family and friends, and express concerns about the impact of forced investment practices favored by politicians.
