So the MacBook Air has officially launched with the M3 chipset, and so let’s break down everything that’s new…and there’s not actually not a lot new with this machine but anywho, let’s dive in.
Now this very much is the textbook definition of a chip refresh - the key update here is of course the M3 chipset - considering Apple had only recently given the MacBook Air a redesign in 2022 and then released a larger version in 2023, we are not getting any sort of design update anytime soon, so a simple chip upgrade makes sense. For those wondering how much better the M3 will be compared to M2, well we don’t have to speculate because this chipset has already been introduced with the MacBook Pro, and it’s a…decent upgrade. Here are some benchmarks though I’m not gonna lie, I think I kinda got too excited about it being based on 3nm, and so I was expecting a giant leap forward…but this is just your usual year over year update. Specifically it’s 21% faster CPU wise, and 15% faster GPU wise. In fact, even in the marketing for the M3 Air, they’re comparing it to the M1 chipset, not M2. You could argue that makes sense because most people aren’t upgrading yearly, but still that does clearly show M3 is a pretty tame upgrade on the whole.
