Health officials in West Africa are on high alert after a new outbreak of Marburg virus disease, a highly infectious and often fatal illness, was confirmed in Guinea. The virus, which is related to Ebola, has a mortality rate of up to 90% and can cause severe hemorrhagic fever.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the outbreak was first detected in early February when a man who had recently traveled to Guinea from Sierra Leone was hospitalized with symptoms of the disease. Since then, several other cases have been reported in the same region, including among health workers who were caring for the initial patient.
"We are very concerned about the situation in Guinea and the potential for this to spread further," said Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa. "We have mobilized a rapid response team to the affected area to provide support to the national authorities and contain the outbreak as quickly as possible."
The Marburg virus is transmitted through contact with bodily fluids of infected animals or humans, such as blood, vomit, and feces. The disease can cause symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, vomiting, and diarrhea, and can progress to severe bleeding, organ failure, and death.
To prevent the spread of the virus, health officials are working to identify and isolate all suspected cases, as well as to trace and monitor all contacts of infected individuals. They are also conducting public awareness campaigns to educate people about the disease and how to protect themselves.
