83. Pamela Slim - Shape the World Through Your Work

“You have to really know how to tell the story about how your experience has really crafted for this work that you want to do. I call Body of Work the love letter to creation. It really centers what it is that you're building and being very deliberate about what you want to bring to life. And then everything else is secondary.”

Guest Info:

Pamela Slim is an author, business coach and the co-founder with her husband Darryl of the Main Street Learning Lab in Mesa, Arizona.

A former corporate director of training and development at Barclays Global Investors, Pam focused her first decade in business as a management consultant, working with large companies such as HP, Charles Schwab, 3Com, Chevron and Cisco Systems.

Since 2005, Pam has advised thousands of entrepreneurs as well as companies serving the small business market such as Keap, Progressive Insurance, Constant Contact and Prezi. Pam partnered with author Susan Cain to build and launch the Quiet Revolution.

Pam has written three books: Escape from Cubicle Nation (named Best Small Business and Entrepreneur book of 2009 from Porchlight Books), Body of Work (2014 with Penguin Portfolio) and her latest, The Widest Net (2021 with McGraw Hill, named Best Marketing & Sales Book of 2021 by Porchlight Books).

In 2016, Pam launched the Main Street Learning Lab in Mesa, Arizona, a grassroots, community-based think tank for small business economic acceleration. http://pamelaslim.com/ke

In The Widest Net, she explains how to build strong diverse relationships, identify and connect with new partners, expand markets, generate leads, and find new customers in places you may never have considered. With this book as a guide, you’ll learn how to connect with potential clients and customers using the true breadth of the marketplace, which she calls an ecosystem of living connections.

The Widest Net shows how to:

Search outside your own lens/bias/routine/history to target ideal customers. Attract the interest and attention of new leads by learning more about them authentically. Develop products and services suited to these customers. Sell through a trusted reciprocity framework where your customers become part of your ecosystem and you each help the other grow. Build and sustain loyalty and trust with new customers. Nurture a diverse and resilient customer base by identifying and adjusting to the ideal customer target over time.

Pam is frequently quoted as a business expert in press such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Forbes, Entrepreneur, Information Week, Money Magazine and Psychology Today.

R.O.G. Takeaway Tips:

Questions to contemplate:

What are your values? The core beliefs you have about what matters most. What are your ingredients? Skills, experiences, perspectives, hidden talents? How can you leverage them? What makes you uniquely positioned in your organization and in the market? What are you creating? What are you investing in that will last long beyond your tenure. How can you center on what you are creating? What do you need? To make the creation work. To get exposure for it. To improve it. What’s the work you want to do? Where are your customers? What ecosystem (AKA watering holes) do you want to join? What impact did you want to make? Looking back – What impact have you already made? What matters most are the ways we purposefully bring our full self: values, ingredients, creations, desires, all of it into the work for a mission greater than ourselves.

R.O.G. Takeaway Tips:

All of us have something to improve. It could be our physical fitness, emotional wellbeing, mental health or spiritual direction, meaning clarify about the purpose of our lives.

What’s something you really want to change or improve? What is the reason you want to change it or improve it?

Your homework this week is to choose one thing, then ask yourself the “five whys”. Drill down to find the heart of the matter. Once you get there, write it down. Set your goals based on your “why”, your truth and your purpose. Do the planning and preparation needed to set up for success.

(Listening) “It's a very tiny thing, but it is foundational to all relationships. It's foundational to social change and transformation. We're not moving anything unless we listen. It really is a macro skill that very often gets treated as a micro skill. I love it because it's small.”

And I would add…Do this with relentless compassion and radical humility.

Every conversation can change the world. Especially if we listen.

What gets in the way of us Just Listening?

How well are we doing relative to the Women’s Business Collaborative Nine Action Initiatives?

Executive Women’s Leadership in Business:

Do you have a woman CEO or have a woman in the pipeline who is being sponsored and groomed to be the CEO? How many women do you have in the C-Suite and executive leadership positions with P+L responsibility? How many women are on your board?

Underrepresentation of women in business:

Does your organization hire and support women own businesses as vendors and partners? How is your organization supporting women in capital and finance through partnerships and venture capital? What is the representation of Women in C-suite Technology positions?

Equity for Women in Business:

What is your organization’s formal commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion? Does your organization pay fairly? How could you find out? How many women does your organization have in the pipeline for talent acquisition and promotion?

In addition to these important considerations, here are recommendations on how to be a generous leader:

66. Thomasina Williams - Taking Space

“There's something about being outside in nature. If you can't go outside, just walk around the floor..movement. It's in our bodies and we've got to somehow get that anxiety and that tension out of our bodies.”

Guest Info:

Thomasina Williams partners with families to develop leaders. Working at the intersection of family business, family systems, and leadership development, she helps clients build multigenerational legacies of connected and capable families, who are engaged stewards of their resources. Clients have described her as their “high-beams,” lighting the way and guiding them through unfamiliar and uncomfortable territory.

An accomplished lawyer and philanthropy strategist, Thomasina is the founder of Sankofa Legacy Advisors. Her signature work gathers and guides Family Enterprise Women ( “The F.E.W."TM) to propel their leadership and legacy to the next level. Regardless of whether they own or work in the business, she helps them live into the fullness of who they are, simplify the complexities of family, and navigate the challenges of combining family and finances.

Thomasina was the first consultant Wells Fargo Private Bank hired to come in-house and play a leadership role in building a new line of business to help its ultra-high net worth clients navigate the family relationships side of wealth.

Thomasina goes beyond conventional approaches to help family members individually and collectively understand the relationship systems that drive their ability to sustain wealth and well-being across multiple generations. As a result of working with her, family members begin to see and explore possibilities they had not considered previously, leading to increased self-awareness, stronger family relationships, and reduced family financial risks.

Learning about the “shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves in three generations” phenomenon, by which 70 to 90 percent of families lose their wealth by the end of the third generation – and realizing that her own family was among these alarming statistics – fuels her passion to help families beat the odds and build enduring legacies.

Thomasina is an advisor to advisors within her field. She serves on the advisory board of privately held Purposeful Planning Institute, and on the board of nonprofit Galliard Family Business Advisor Institute. Beyond the field of family advising, she is a member of the advisory board of privately held Enterprising Women magazine, and is in the processing of transitioning from the board of nonprofit Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute to the board of its new for-profit subsidiary.

Three things come to top of mind when I think about how to apply what Bill taught us in our own lives. One - Accept Micro-failures. Two - Conduct generous meetings. Three - Innovate through empathy 1. Micro-failures, are normal, human and daily imperfections. Accepting others, and our own, micro-failures is an act of generosity. Let it go. Learn from mistakes, share your learning with others. As Eleanor Roosevelt said, “Learn from the mistakes of others, you’ll never live long enough to make them all yourself.” 2. Conduct generous meetings. Be thoughtful in the ways you ask the question, or set the context, so the person you’re asking can win. Call out their name, recap the point of the conversation you want them to weigh in on. Thoughtfully ask others to participate in a way that enables them to confidently shine. It’s a triple win: it’s good for the person, you model generous leadership and the meeting will be more productive and enjoyable. 3. Empathy as a catalyst for innovation. True innovation is a byproduct of empathy. We first need to humble ourselves to others. Ask empathic questions like: Where is the system not working for them? What’s the gap? Allow your genuine curiosity to guide the discussion. Ask quality questions. Seek to find the gap and collaboratively create the solution toward progress. This week, let your and others micro failures go; thoughtfully ask questions in meetings so others can shine and leverage empathy as a catalyst for innovation.

62. Joze Piranian - Radical Self-Acceptance

“The fear of being rejected or being judged for sounding different, got in the way. And that's an interesting parallel that can be understood through one of my favorite metaphors that I speak about in my talks. And that's the idea that everyone stutters. That inner stutter could be the fear of rejection. The fear of failure or the fear of even the fear of success. And these are all inner stutters that act as roadblocks. And ultimately that shrink our destined by stripping away countless possibilities.”

Joze Piranian is a lifelong stutterer turned International Speaker helping people who hold back turn fear into action so that they overcome their “inner stutter” and unlock their true potential in life. After avoiding speaking almost entirely growing up in Beirut due to a debilitating stutter, Joze has won the Inspirational Speaker of the Year award and has performed stand-up comedy in 3 continents and 3 languages (he stutters in 6 of them!). Having graduated from McGill University in Montreal with a Bachelor of Commerce and with a Master of International Business from Queen’s University and IPADE in Mexico City, Joze worked as a project manager at a multinational in Toronto and New York prior to leaving the corporate world to face his biggest fear. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips:

Questions to consider, thanks to what we learned from Joze:

What’s your inner stutter? What area of your life is a block or challenge for you? The first step: Identify your inner stutter. What is it? The second step – Own it. Embrace it. Third step: take deliberate action to work with your inner stutter.

2. Own your uniqueness! Practice radical self-acceptance. What does radical self-acceptance look like for you? Look in the mirror and celebrate all that you are, exactly as you are.

56. Mia Ives-Rublee - Accessible Voices

“If you are an organization that wants to be extremely open and welcoming to the disability community, you shouldn't go for the bare minimum. You should be attempting to be as accommodating and open as possible because that's going to bring in more talented individuals who are excited about working at your location.”

Guest Info:

Mia Ives-Rublee is the director for the Disability Justice Initiative at American Progress. Prior to coming to American Progress, she advocated for disability justice and inclusion at nonprofit organizations and businesses across the United States. She has worked with Women’s March, Families Belong Together, DC Action Lab, Adoptees for Justice, Fair Fight, People’s Collective for Justice and Liberation, and numerous other progressive organizations. Best known for founding the Women’s March Disability Caucus, Ives-Rublee helped organize the original Women’s March on Washington in 2017. The Women’s March was one of the first large-scale events to have certified deaf interpreters on stage. She was also recognized by She the People as one of 20 Women of Color in Politics to Watch in 2020 and awarded the 2019 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Social Work.

Mia Ives-Rublee worked on several political campaigns during the 2020 cycles. R.O.G. Takeaway Tips:

1. Policies

Does your organization have an employee handbook? If so, what does your employee handbook say about hiring people with disabilities? What does it say about accommodations? How will you learn more about ADA, SSI, SSDI and Medicaid for your disabled employees? As Mia says, "Make sure people with disabilities are at the table when policy is being made." 2. Accommodations

Does your current process include a question to the candidate about accommodations? During the interview, how do you inquire about what accommodations may be needed? Once hired, what accommodations do you offer? What could you offer? Consider how inclusive the interview, hiring, onboarding and employment processes are and how you can make them even better.

R.O.G. Takeaway Tips:

1. Learn the Vocabulary

One thing all of us must do is get our vocabulary right on differences we don’t know enough about. Vocab and terminology from this episode:

ASD - Autism Spectrum Disorder Neurodiversity - The range of differences in individual brain function and behavioral traits, regarded as part of normal variation in the human population. This term is typically used to describe people with ASD, but may also refer to other differences such as ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia. Neurotypical - Term used to reference those who do not have a condition that would qualify them as neurodiverse.

2. Acceptable behaviors. It's important to identify and recognize what behavioral norms are tolerated in our organizations. Behaviors often associated with ASD compared to other tolerated workplace behavior. We need to check our conditioning about what’s acceptable. For example, being literal vs. being aggressive.

I think those are big things...taking yourself out of the ego and being like, What do I want to give to this world? Because we only have a limited time here. So leave your impact, because we're all able to leave an impact here.” Victoria Arlen

Guest Info:

Victoria Arlen’s life drastically changed in 2006 at the tender age of eleven when she developed two rare conditions known as Transverse Myelitis and Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis. This was an incredibly rare scenario and Victoria quickly lost the ability to speak, eat, walk and move. She slipped into a vegetative state in which doctors had written her off as a lost cause. Victoria spent nearly four years “locked” inside her own body completely aware of what was going on just unable to move or communicate. Doctors believed there was little hope of survival and recovery was unlikely. Victoria, however was not ready to give up. In 2010 after almost four years she began the nearly impossible fight back to life. Learning how to speak, eat and move all over again.

Victoria went on to exceedingly defy the odds and not only recovered but has since become an accomplished Motivational Speaker, Television Host and Swimmer. Her swimming resume includes three Silvers and a Gold medal from the London 2012 Paralympic Games as well as multiple World, American and Pan American Records.

In April 2015, Victoria made the transition from professional athlete to sportscaster and joined ESPN as one of the youngest on air talents hired by the company and reports and hosts across all platforms. In the Spring of 2016 Victoria defied yet another odd and after spending nearly a decade in a wheelchair paralyzed from the waist down was able to learn how take one step after another and eventually not only did she learn how to walk but within a year and a half in the Fall of 2017 she learned to dance as a contestant on Season 25 of Dancing with the Stars. Victoria and her dance partner Val Chmerkovskiy quickly became fan favorites.

Victoria is also carrying out her dream of helping others, serving as the Founder and Co-Chair of Victoria's Victory Foundation, a nonprofit that assists those with mobility challenges to achieve their own personal victory.

Victoria’s book titled Locked In hit stores worldwide in August of 2018 and in April of 2018 ESPN Films debuted a 30 for 30 titled “Locked In” based on Victoria’s story at the Tribeca Film Festival. Victoria was a contributing producer for the film. Victoria became the face of Jockey in May of 2018 and debuted her signature clothing line Jockey by Victoria Arlen in September of 2019. In July of 2019 Victoria was announced as the new host of America Ninja Warrior jr, Season 2 which aired in February 2020.

In the last year Victoria has branched into more creative spaces in both acting, producing, fashion and hosting with a variety of projects currently in the works.

53. Kyle Coon - Accessible Voices

“There's always a path forward. There's never a wall that you come to and it's just impossible to get through. If you can't go straight through, the obstacle or barrier in your way, then there's a way around it, or maybe, you just have to climb up and over it."

Guest Info:

Kyle Coon lost his sight at the age of six after a battle with Retinoblastoma—cancer of the eye. However, not having sight has not stopped him from pursuing vision. Since then he has become a competitive rock climber, downhill skier, runner and triathlete.

As a young child, Kyle was shown how to embrace his adversity by world-class blind athlete Erik Weihenmayer who encouraged him to live life to the fullest. Kyle took Weihenmayer’s advice to heart and began pursuing a life of adventure.

In 2006, he hiked the Ankascocha Trail into Machu Picchu. In 2007, he summited Mt. Kilimanjaro at the age of 15.

After graduating from the University of Central Florida with a degree in Communication, he became an endurance athlete competing in numerous marathons and triathlons. In 2018, he was a member of the first team of tandem cyclists with all blind or visually impaired stokers (person on the back of a tandem bike) to complete Race Across America—the world’s toughest bicycle race—racing from Oceanside, Calif to Annapolis, Md in seven days 15 hours. Later in 2018, at Ironman Arizona, Kyle became the first totally blind person to complete an Ironman branded Triathlon (2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike, 26.2 mi run) in under 11 hours. He continues to push himself physically and mentally as he now pursues his goal of representing the USA at the 2020 Paralympics in the sport of Triathlon.

As a young man, Kyle has spoken to major organizations about his adversity and triumphs including various Rotary Clubs in Florida and Taiwan, the International Association of Refrigerated Warehousing, and The American Cancer Society. He has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in Backpacker and Triathlete magazines.

Losing sight has only served as a base for Kyle’s ability to master his ambitions despite his inability to see them. Inspiring those with similar challenges and sharing a few laughs along the way has become his trademark. Drawing upon his experiences as a totally blind person and adventure athlete, he demonstrates the importance of vision, commitment and courage to pursuing an “Eyeronvision” and embracing the adversity along our life’s journey.

While he wasn’t the first blind person to climb a mountain, run a marathon or compete in a triathlon, his goal is to be one of the best and ensure he isn’t the last.

“People sometimes confuse kindness with avoiding direct conversation. But, actually kindness is equal to direct conversation. And if you don't have direct conversations, if you're afraid in a business when something's not going right to say, you know, this isn't going right, but say it respectfully. Then you have a problem in your business on the flip side, when we're doing that, when we're saying this isn't going right, but I have to be kind and respectful when I convey this information to you. Now, both parties or multiple parties are in a place where they can think through and get to the issues."

Think of every day at work as an opportunity for reps. Get stronger every day. Kindness is the willingness to speak, change, influence and lead. Where’s an opportunity in your organization to offer kindness? Inclusion – how can you create space for more voices to be heard? “Leaders are realizing that it's about looking at people's hidden potentials and leading the people and not the company. You lead the people. You work...with them and find out exactly who they are, what they need and be there for the people that you have ...you become this incredible leader, the organization just shifts - and the people within that organization shift as well"

Guest Info:

A sought-after keynote speaker, Likky Lavji is passionate about helping others “break barriers” to unleash their human potential. In fact, his middle name, Madat, translates to ‘help’ and he channels this into providing value in every relationship he has – personal and professional. With over 25 years as a CEO of a top IT company, Likky’s extensive experience in executive leadership has given him a unique perspective that remains unchartered by leaders and organizations in understanding the layers beneath human behavior and how it impacts growth and productivity of an organization. He has been acknowledged by prominent organizations, including Telus Corporation, Lenovo Canada and Royal Bank of Canada for his ability to create mindset shift when it comes to commitment and powerful performance to achieve results.

Navigating through our blind spots shouldn’t be all that difficult naturally, or at least we would like to think so. That’s why it’s our BS. There are things we like to believe about ourselves, when in the perception of others, we may be something completely different entirely. At times, we can find ourselves thinking we are already better than we are or have gone further than we actually have. This is unfortunately why many do not reach their full potential. These Blind Spot behaviors only sabotage our own steps in progress, and sadly, the cost of this can be an unfulfilled life or business, and needless failed relationships over time. Once you’re aware of your own BS, the world will open up to you in a whole new way.

24. Make Life Better: "B" the Force for Good. Part 2

”Those who really want to have a successful career at Saxbys thrive because they get so much feedback, because we communicate so openly with such are. We care about ourselves and our own reputations and about you as a fellow member of the Saxbys’ tribe.”

Guest Info:

Nick Bayer has always been in the business of bringing people together, whether it’s as one of Philadelphia Business Journal’s "Most Admired CEOs" or as a consummate team captain since Little League. So when he created Saxbys in 2005, Nick never really considered it to be a coffee company — instead, it’s a social impact company fueled by amazing food, beverage and hospitality.

Saxbys has since grown from one corner café to a nearly 30-unit, Philadelphia-based business with a singular mission: Make Life Better. For Nick Bayer, “making life better" began by fostering an O.D.D (outgoing, detail-oriented, and disciplined) team, committed to the betterment of the communities it serves and aligned by their shared entrepreneurial spirit and Saxbys' core values. Today, that team spans over 500 members across the Northeast that represent the change-makers of tomorrow.

To that point, Bayer introduced Saxbys’ pioneering Experiential Learning Program (ELP) in 2015 in partnership with Drexel University — the nation’s first entirely student-run cafe where students earn full academic credit and wages through a university cooperative education program. Bayer’s vision for the program is to embolden the next generation of entrepreneurs, providing undergrad students with tangible experience as a supplement to traditional classroom learning. In five short years, one ELP cafe has blossomed to a dozen, with several more planned to open in the near future.

Nick is currently the Entrepreneur in Residence at Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, an adjunct professor at Drexel University and the Executive in Residence at Temple University's Fox School of Business. He serves on the Board of The Franklin Institute, Big Brothers Big Sisters Independence Region, the Community College of Philadelphia, Drexel University’s Close School of Entrepreneurship and Drexel’s Steinbright Career Development Center, as well as being a Corporate Council Member for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. In 2017, he was named the "Entrepreneur of the Year" by the Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce as well as EY’s "Social Entrepreneur of the Year." A Minnesota native, with no ties to aviation, she grew up with a heart to serve her country, and that is just what she did. She joined Air Force ROTC at the University of Minnesota and the possibility of becoming a pilot was presented to her for the first time; that is where her love of aviation began.

Tammy completed Specialized Undergraduate Pilot Training in April of 2000, an upon graduation was immediately assigned to be an instructor in the T-37. After training hundreds of students the skills of aerobatics, instruments and formation, she then moved on to fly the mighty A-10 Warthog, where she completed a remote tour to Osan Air Base, Korea. After an aircraft injury required cervical spine reconstruction, Tammy transitioned to the Arizona Air National Guard. She flew the MQ-1 Predator and the MQ-9 Reaper, accumulating over 1500 hours of combat support time in both Iraq and Afghanistan supporting and protecting our troops on the ground, providing real time reconnaissance and lethal support. During this time Tammy also graduated from the prestigious US Air Force Weapons School.

Desiring to get back into a high performance aircraft and having a passion to teach, Tammy then transitioned to the Air Force Reserves, instructing in the T-38 Talon for the last 6 years of her 20 year military career. Her focus was on balancing family life as a married mother of three with instructing in the fast paced environment of the Air Force’s premier fighter trainer. She excelled at both, earning multiple awards and spearheading new programs to mentor and grow professional aviators. Additionally, while working full time, running a business and raising three kids, she earned her Master’s in Christian Ministry

Favorite Quote:

“What is success? To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
